I check my e-mail for the secondary as much as a diabetic checks their blood sugar....ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!! this is my number one school on my list, and I just wanna get an interview...my application has been considered complete for about a week now (took august MCAT so they had to wait forever). how long after being complete do they usually send out secondaries?

well I'm not sure if there is a norm... but they sent me a secondary via e-mail about 10 days after receiving my primary app.

can someone verify this info for me on Touro-NY:

1. if i have received a secondary that means that as soon as i fill it out/send it in i will receive an interview date

2. if accepted you only have 2 weeks to accept/decline, and if you accept you have to give a $2k deposit that is NOT refundable if you choose to go elsewhere

can someone please let me know if this is inaccurate....i know i am getting far ahead of myself but i am hoping to only put down 1 deposit and this kinda scares me.....any info would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,
x

This is accurate.

Does the secondary have to be completed along with LOR in order to get an invite? I might be late in getting a LOR from my committee and was wondering if i was still able to get an invite without the LOR yet.

Yeah you have to have both in to be invited to interview. I had submitted my secondary and they delayed my invite because they hadn't got my letters. Once they had them on file i got an interview.

I was googling Touro NY and I read some really startling things about this school. I heard about some allegations of racism among faculty and students, especially towards people of color. I find this kind of ironic considering the school affiliation with a certain historically persecuted religious group and its location in Harlem. Does anyone care to go further about this school? I also found something startling about an administrator at another Touro college in NY received bribes to change student grades. This kind of controversy is something I would like to avoid. Is it just best to avoid this school?

Alright, so I'll be honest. I was getting sick of reading this thread just before my interview because of all the negative things I was hearing about the school. So I went with a clear head to make my own decision.

All I can say is 👍 👍

It's a great school! Everything is state of the art! They record classroom lectures so that you can watch them later to study, they have great anatomy and histology labs, super high tech dummies who perform medical abnormalities. I didn't get to speak to any of the students (Monday is test day, and they were all cramming in the library/study rooms) but they didn't look miserable. In fact, some were laughing! 😉 The location is right in the heart of Harlem and just 1-2 blocks away from several trains. You don't have to live in the city, they were saying how many students even live in New Jersey or Connecticut (15-20 min commute by train and it's way cheaper than living in the city). They have security 24/7 and will walk you to the train station at night to be safe.

The best part of it all is really the diversity of the population you'll be working with. Harlem really does encompass all races and ethnicities and you will really have the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life.

Coming from a suburban upbringing, I would love the chance to study in a major city like New York. I really love the urban life style and the fact that you don't need a car!

Ultimately what it boils down to is that every medical school is teaching the same information. It's the environment in which you learn it in and the personality of the school that makes the difference. If I get accepted, I will put down a deposit. I will be honest, my top school is PCOM (I fell in love last year and haven't looked back), but they haven't even sent me an interview invite. Touro-COM has definitely jumped to the top of my list. I still have more interviews to go, but I really did enjoy the school and could see myself here next year.

Good luck to the rest of you and just remember to keep an open mind, and don't let SDN put a negative image in your mind!

thank you for sharing your experience.....that is truly great to hear!

on another note, for those of you who have recently submitted your secondary, how long after that do they schedule your interview and how many weeks/months is it before the scheduled date? also, has anyone been accepted yet, and if so how long after the interview do they let you know?

thanks,

anyone else interviewing October 19th? And if you have already.. any other impressions? What's the panel format all about?

thanks!

Sorry, I tend to stay quiet but I gotta respond here. The school mentioned that received bribes for diplomas was a masters program in, I believe, education. A friend of mine working in the board of Ed was complaining about all the teachers who lost their jobs due to paying for their diplomas. TouroCom has NOTHING to do with the other Touro programs, not with the undergrad, not with the masters program, not with the law school, etc. I think the only thing Touro has in common is midtown gets the loan checks first and the guy that first founded the school is rolled out on important occasions but that's it.

As to the other allegation, there is a big difference between the administration, the faculty and the students. 2 out of these 3 groups actually help each other. Make of that what you will.

Don't get too caught with the wording of "panel format". It's literally two doctors that you sit in an office with and talk. The interview is very laid back and conversational, not a Q&A session. Relax and good luck to you! 👍

interviewing Oct 26th!

Lucky! Man, I wanted a later interview date, the latest they offered me was the 19th, and I asked Issa but she said they weren't scheduling after then, and I only got the invite last week!

Also, thanks jesscsanchez for posting something positive about this school. I want to look forward to this interview and everything is bumming me out! I hope I enjoy it.

Hey, it's no problem. I didn't want to go into my first interview thinking "why am I even here?" when ultimately it comes down to your personality and how you fit in each environment. I'm a pretty go-with-the-flow kind of person and as far as the school is concerned, I was impressed and excited about the prospect of going there. As I mentioned before, I've lived my whole life in Suburbia, so the idea of moving to a big city like NYC is a major plus!

Good luck on your interview! It's pretty conversational, not some rapid fire Q & A. Just relax and have some fun with it! 😉

TUCOM-NY actually just canceled my interview for the 14th... 👎 I had to reschedule for the following Wed, the 21st. I would've picked the 19th, but Wednesday is my completely free day of the week... Anyone else doing the 21st?

I just wanted to give my perspective on Touro since I've seen so many negative posts! (I just interviewed on 10/5) First, I thought the city was amazing! The school is located right outside of Manhatten in Harlem. The area is very historical from the Harlem Renaissance and is supposed to be undergoing another in the next 5 years (bringing in hotels, restaurants, etc.) Everyone that I met on the street seemed really friendly. The population was very diverse. I think there is a lot to be learned from the different cultures living there. Second, the admissions staff, deans, and professors I met were very open, very enthusiastic, and excited that we were there. I felt very welcomed. The facilities were nice, but they were slightly unfinished. The pharmacy and medical school are in the same building, but seem to be separated. The technology was amazing and state of the art. They do have live videos of lectures so you can watch from home if you can't make it. A couple of my personal concerns were that the library seemed very small, (but not much smaller than LECOM's, so perhaps it's standard), and they didn't have much of a "Wellness Center." They had maybe 10-15 exercise machines and a weights station, but no attached locker rooms that I saw. I did like that they have security walk you to train and bus stations at nighttime for your safety (even at 2 am!) but wasn't too fond of their 70% attendance policy, which if you violate, you lose the ability to seek help from faculty?

I'm personally still a little up in the air. Their curriculum seems strong and faculty seem great, only a few negatives for me! Good luck everyone!

At the interviews they split you up into different groups A-D. Within your group, you're split into a Panel I-III. The Panel consists of two faculty members at Touro and is pretty low key. You all sit around a desk and discuss yourself. I did hear different perspectives, however, depending on the Panel a person was in. In my particular panel, I felt that one faculty member was trying to play Devil's Advocate a lot to see how I would react or respond to opposition, but all in all they were really just trying to get to know me. It didn't seem like Q + A. It was definitely more conversational, with them sharing their thoughts and experiences as well. I did hear from some other people that their Panel did not stimulate conversation, which forced them to have to direct the "Interview." Others felt a little more intimidated. So again, it depends on which Panel you have. Just go in feeling relaxed and comfortable, and be yourself. Make sure to prepare yourself on the "obvious" types of questions. -- Why D.O? What do you like about OMM? Why Harlem? etc.

I believe they took down the Live Stream of lectures. They cited something about bandwidth issues, but who knows. The Library is kinda small but there are plenty of study rooms to use. Study spaces are only really an issue when 1st and 2nd years have a test on the same day.

I'm currently a first year here as well and you can tell the faculty spent a lot of time developing the curriculum. Ever school has its issues, but so far I haven't had any problems here. Another plus is apparently they are putting in a PS3 in the cafeteria 😀

Me too! First they don't give me a date later than the 19th, then they cancel the 14th (with a weeks notice)! I had to pay a flight change fee 🙁 to switch from the 14th to the 21st. Wonder what their reasons were for the cancellation. Inconvenienced me a bit, so I hope my visit to this school is worth it.

Ah I'm sorry you had to reschedule ur flight! 🙁 It really is annoying, but w/e like you said hopefully it'll be worth it!!🙂 Where are you flying from?

I just do not have a good feeling about this school, the fact that its in a bad part of NYC is another big negative.

Just wanted to clear this up from my perspective....(and this is not my top choice school, so i'm not really bias)

TUCOM is literally on the outskirts of Manhattan. It is located off of 125th street, which seemed like a main street with lots of traffic and taxis. There are a lot of businesses around the school. I never once felt nervous or scared about the area it is located in. Any city will have violence and crime, just don't place yourself in a position to be a target. TUCOM offers security assistance to trains and bus stops at any time and seems to encourage it after dark. Don't let someone telling you that "NYC is a bad area" or that Harlem is a bad area deter you from being interested. I was nervous about the same thing before visiting and I was completely wrong. Go visit if you get an interview and make your own choice.

Can anyone tell me chances of acceptance to NYCOM? I am NY resident

Hi! I also would read SDN and feel very disheartened about newer schools, Touro schools, WHICH school I would get into and which should attend....NONE of that even matters! If you are going the DO route, there are a lot of newer schools and Touro has built a solid reputation with its other 2 schools. I learned more about DO Programs AFTER I graduated from UPenn and went to the Drexel Masters program. I was early accepted to Touro NV the year before I was accepted to Touro NY. In very late July, I had to decide a few days before class when NY took me off the waiting list and it was VERY intense ($ issues, housing, fear...). I also interviewed at PCOM, and b/c that was my top choice, my nerves were very very bad during the interview. At the Touro schools, I just took control of the interviews and pretended that I was a happy person. In actuality, I was miserable while completing my MBS at Drexel U COM. I was also miserable when I was unemployed last year and applying to other DO programs on the east coast like PCOM and Touro NY. My point is: prepare for the interview: know your resume, think of something solid to discuss academically and experience-wise, know the 4 tenets of Osteopathic Medicine and just mention in very little detail about how you think Osteopathic Manipulitive Medicine is great for lymphatice flow, circulation, and musculoskeletal dysfuntions....and then just take control! ALso,I had a lot of teaching and clinical experiences in underserved areas. Talk about what YOU will contribute to the school and the field! It is not a pressure cooker, you just need to be sincere and act happy. Acting happy has actually made me happy to be here, b/c everyone is friendly and helpful. My housing situation was non existent for August but there are hostels nearby (safe, surprisingly) and I still got through it and got good grades.

I chose Touro b/c:
1) rotations in NYC and NJ, AND they will be set by the time I am 3rd year. Ask the admissions for a current list.
2)I want to do my residency here in General Pediatrics
3) I took medical school courses at Drexel, so even if profs aren't my favorite, I can teach myself the material and I have the textbooks (buy them!) and powerpoints
4) I specifically chose this school b/c all the lectures are videostreamed and I can rewatch them at my own pace. EXTREMELY helpful for biochemistry and anatomy, etc. I am auditory and visual learner. I listen, read, read out loud, draw out pathways on my own.
5) I want to be somewhat happy about where I live and invest my time. I did not see myself wanting to serve Henderson NV or getting placed in that area for rotations.
6) Also the other Touro Schools have good match lists in specialties, so I know that I am not limited depending on board scores.
7) I am so ready to do this!!!!!!!!
8) Also, They have study rooms and even though the space is limited, this is a common theme in a lot of the DO schools where I interviewed. None of them were on a bigger university campus.
9) 1st years have 2 or 3 exams every Monday, so I know that I will not crash b/c there is not a giant block week here.
10) 2nd year has one day of block exams every 3 weeks (every class almost) so that will be VERY hard but I will build better study skills this year and next year.

What I've learned so far:
I read on my own and many students study other things during lectures. I think attendance is required so that there is not an empty school building everyday and we have a community here. I sort of hang around the room to see when I should be there.
I am in the building SO much that I dont even care about the potentially distracting surroundings, and cabs are cheap if you live nearby and want to commute safely late at night. 110th and Broadway and down is nice I think and a lot of people seek roommates on Craig's List.

:luck:

Anatomy Prof-very very good, humorous and great in the lab, I re-watch ALL her lectures on videostream

Biochem Profs- clear, concise, straightforward. difficult subject so I am glad I can videostream it and required text extremely concise

Physio profs- one very good, one a little more challenging, but I prefer to playback lectures and read the slides/parts of text book figures that are important

Histo Prof- teaches Info straight from textbook and students share Histo slide software that is very good

OMM-good and lab is fun

for those who have interviewed, do you remember how much walking was done?? i'm deciding on what type of shoes i should wear... i only have 4 inch black pumps and flats lol. if there isn't too much walking, i can deal with the 4 inches.. but not if its more than an hour..

interviewing the 21st :]

They took you through the building and a little bit outside. It wasn't a lot of walking, but then again I have don't have any experience with high heels.

Do you have any idea as to how long the walking was? I just don't want to be hunched over in pain if we end up having to walk a lot.. my pain threshold is probably around 30-40 minutes lol.

you walk around for about 30-40 minutes, the rest of the time your in the conference room.

It was about 30-40 minutes. Be careful....there is alot of glass on the side walk

Oh I will :] I'm bringing my flats just in case.. but I actually live not too far away from the campus. I'm just scared it'll be raining and I don't know if it is appropriate to be lugging around rainboots..................

Honestly, wear something comfortable....why be in pain/discomfort. Trust me the interviewers will understand.

Ayooooo!....I'm also a first year at Touro and I thoroughly enjoy it.

My classmates and professors are rad. The class is very diverse, friendly, and cohesive. There are multiple sites that have been made to accommodate others with with their studies. Classmates post study guides, notes, scribes, external resources, online copies of books, programs, etc. It helps alleviate the 1000's of slides you have to go through for an exam. AAAAAAAAnnnnnd when you want to unwind NYC is at your feet. NYC is fronkin' awesome hands-down.

I'll also vouch for Dr. Rich the Anatomy professor (she's friggin' awesome) as well as the laboratory professors. They are very good.

I'm not sure why some people post some negative things on here about the school, I suppose to each their own. However, I wouldn't believe everything on here. There is a lot of hear-say b.s. Learn to sift through it and get real first hand opinions. I know that the class of 2011 and 2012 had some issues (older threads). However, ALL schools have problems. These issues have been dealt with and hasn't affected our class.

Anywho, I'll be happy to answer any questions about the school, living situations (you don't have to live in Harlem), curriculum, professors, studying, food, horoscopes, music, bear attacks, whatever you want. Feel free to message me as well.

You may have to give me some time though. We have a Biochem exam on Monday that I really don't wanna study for.

Why do they charge 200 bucks for a secondary? Honestly what does this school have over Touro CA and NV?

Sorry if this has been answered before, but do you need a DO letter to get an interview? I got the secondary but no interview, and it's been a while now...just wondering what's up. I am complete at the school.

Yeah, they require an MD or DO LOR. Get that in and you'll be good to go.

Okay so when Touro says two weeks for acceptance/rejection notice...do they mean EXACTLY two weeks? haha. Don't want to stress over my inbox all day if I don't have to!

two weeks from the date of my interview. im still waiting! did anyone who was already accepted know if touro meant 2 weeks exactly?

Yes, read my post above. They are pretty close to the two week mark. You should hear back from them any day now.
