What a way to find out about your first acceptance to medical school! I was in the Atlanta airport, BY MYSELF, when my boyfriend checked my email and told me over the phone. I felt like Steve Carell in the movie "Get Smart" when he requests the Cone of Silence and starts screaming "I'm so happy!! THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!!" (youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tw9w5W7sas)

It still hasn't hit me yet that I'm ACTUALLY going to be a doctor! I'm so excited!! :soexcited::highfive::claps::banana:

congrats jess! i felt kinda the same way you did. i had to reread that email a few times haha. earlier i felt really certain about putting that deposit down but now im on the fence. i got into my state school too so making this decision will be tough, even if i put down the deposit and decide later. but after everything, its a good problem to have.

for those who are wait listed, good luck, it isn't over yet!

Hey Jess - CONGRATSSSSS! I'm happy to see you got your first acceptance! Were you in ATL for your PCOM-GA interview? Are ya gonna put the money down at Touro-com? You definitely should :). Is it sad that I was really excited I got waitlisted instead of accepted? haha - with putting the deposit down at LECOM in October to save my butt a spot in med school, I couldn't afford another one JUST YET.

Let me know how your PCOM-GA interview went!

Well ironically enough, after saying that I'm definitely putting the money down, I'm holding out too. Not that Touro-NY wasn't a good school, but my GA-PCOM interview was FANTASTIC and I felt really at home there. I loved the school and the area is really nice. I know what you mean about the $2000, that's what has me holding back. If I get accepted to GA-PCOM, I'm probably going there. PCOM (Philly) hasn't responded yet and I'm not holding my breath. I'm off to Arizona at the end of this week for AZCOM and ATSU-SOMA, but it's so far out west and I have my heart set on staying on the east coast.

I'll find out about GA-PCOM by next week (at the latest), so that gives me plenty of time to decide if I want to put down the money for Touro-NY.

Good luck on the rest of your interviews! And hey, we're going to be DOCTORS!! WOOHOO!!

I thought this was funny.... Today I was thinking about my Touro-NY interview (which was earlier in the week) and how nice it was for admissions to treat us to a restaurant for lunch. Then as I checked my online bank statement this morning, I saw that the $200 secondary check I sent in was finally cashed... That meal wasn't so "free" after all! haha

good luck with interviews...they should change the name of this thread though...from TUCOM-NY to TouroCOM-NY, you don't wanna get the name of the school wrong at the interview:slap:.
Only the schools in CA and NV are called TUCOM, they also share accreditation; TouroCOM-NY is a separate school.

I enjoyed my interview day and felt the day went well. The facility was very new and nice and the students that led us around seemed to love the school. I'd be very happy to gain acceptance to this school.

However, reading on the boards about clinical rotations and the administration at Touro schools, in general, is starting to make me worry. Did other people seem to sense any unorganization at the school? And potentially what sacrifices we'd have to make if we do end up going to Touro NY?

I felt a very good vibe from the school. It's really just the rotation sites that turn me off, especially when rotations are 2 of the 4 medical school years.

I just had my interview on Monday. First I'd like to mention how "at home" I felt throughout the tour and interview. The facilities were new and wonderful, the administration was surprisingly very responsive and personable (contrary to what I read) and the location was very historical and rich in culture. Overall, I had an awesome experience and received a wonderful vibe from the school.

I asked SEVERAL times about the rotations. They have a list of rotations which are set in stone and they have solidified their place and they will be getting more based on how competent the Touro MS3 & MS4s are. So far, the Touro students stand out in their rotatiosn because the school provides great clinical exposure the first couple years. I am confident that this program will flourish because of its location and motives.

Interviewing here next month...Excited & nervous at the same time.

Yeah, I'm sure it will flourish in years to come, but if I'm eventually deciding between here and NYCOM, it'll be hard to turn down a school with 40+ affiliated hospitals for a school with only 6 affiliated hospitals as of now (3 of which aren't even in NYC, which kind of defeats the purpose of serving the local community).

Also, wasn't it odd that they didn't have any type of presentation on the curriculum?? I had to gather as much info as I could from the tour guides, so I know I didn't get the whole picture. I felt like I left the interview day, knowing not much more than before I came (although I did get to actually see facilities which were nice, and learn a little about the rotations and their active attempts to get more rotation sites).

Are there any current students that are willing to let me stay with them? I am interviewing on Nov 16th at 9:00 am. I just need a place to stay for the night. Thanks in advance!!!!! :)

Ouch. I received a secondary yesterday and was pretty excited since it was a guaranteed interview. However, Obed just called me to say that it was a mistake, instead I should have received a rejection e-mail. I'm a little upset since he pointed to my low sciGPA (2.92--yes I know it's low), but I have a strong upward trend (2.49-3.62-3.4-3.5) that he just brushed it off because there was a slight drop again from sophomore to junior year. Ohh well, nothing I can do about it now.

Wow. That is such a bad mistake. Sorry you didn't get in.

i have a question about the "personal statement" in the secondary....to refresh everyone's memory:

Personal Statement
Please discuss how your background, experience or academic program has prepared you for meeting the TouroCOM Mission, Goals or Objectives. Please limit your essay to 2 pages. On a separate sheet of paper, consider addressing a few areas; Why Osteopathic Medicine? Why Harlem? Have you been exposed to a diverse environment? How did you contribute? How has your academic background and personal experiences prepared you for medical school? Can you express how you were influenced by a shadowing experience?

So is this a 2-part question? Is the first part Just answering (in 2 pages) how you meet the mission, goals, etc and SEPARATELY are we supposed to address all of those other questions? If so, how long is the 2nd response supposed to be, 2 pages as well?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I just wrote one Personal statement in which i used my background, experience, and academic program to show my readiness to: meet TouroCOM's mission, why DO, why Harlem, a shadowing experience that had an impact, etc (I didn't talk about all the points they mentioned because it would've been way too long, I kept it to 1 and 3/4 pages single-spaced)... I didn't feel it was necessary to separate it into 2 sections...

I know that some people did separate it into 2 sections and it worked out fine... Either way, it doesn't really make a difference because you are covering the same material. Best of luck!!

It's actually 9 affiliations for Touro. NYCOM has 40+ really? where did you see that?

Also expect NYCOM's to go down in 2011 when Hofstra opens up on long island.

I was just going off of the literature TouroCOM gave me during my interview last week, in which they only listed 6. As for NYCOM, I got that number from the NYCOM Catalog 2009-2011, p 11-14. I counted it up to be about 46 affiliations, it prob will go down a lil once Hofstra opens up.

The catalog can be downloaded here: http://iris.nyit.edu/nycom/Students_Resources.htm

Thanks! Hopefully you will have a small interview group so they might take you out to the famous Silvia's Soul Food Restaurant! :D haha That smothered chicken and potatoes were so good!!

Chicken and Waffles!!!!!

I did not like this school at all, it was an absolute 180 degree contrast from Touro California. I thought the director of admissions was rude, never answered emails or telephone calls, a big contrast from the people at Touro California. That and the idea that you need an escort in the evening did not sit well with me at all. And the Orwellian fingerprint scanners.

Yea...I am not happy with the school either.....

Seems like alot of smoke and mirrors.....

Touro California has a pretty solid match list with a lot of students getting into California residencies, that is pretty good for a DO school, because California is the hardest state in the country to match into a residency. I saw their list and there were some people got into places at Stanford, USC, and UCSF. Pretty good and they have fairly small class of 130 students. I like Touro Ca's dean a lot more also their admissions director was really pleasant and well spoken.

....the opposite of Touro Ny

Its amazing that they share the same name, even the Touro CA student tour guide did not have any nice things to say about Touro NY. We also had to sit through this whole sales pitch about how DOs are better than MDs, it was as if they were trying to sell the idea of becoming Osteopathic physicians, maybe the doctor had some kind of inferiority complex. In my experience MDs and DOs are the same.

That's strange, Obed is usually good about returning e-mails and phone calls. And in what sense was he rude? I know for a lot of my classmates, he was the one who actually helped people realize that Touro was a good fit for them.

You don't *absolutely need* an escort in the evening - I walk home in the evenings just fine, but the security guards are there if you don't feel totally comfortable. It'd be better to have this option around than not to have it at all. At my undergrad institution, Berkeley, they offered night-time escort service too. It's a consequence of living in an urban area, it's not going to be as safe as a random suburbia in the middle of nowhere.

Fingerprint scanners - MANY schools have an attendance policy. This was just the way that Touro chose to enforce it. Touro NV actually has a similar policy: 70% of all classes must be attended, and it counts as 10% of your grade. Yes, the fingerprinting may seem a bit overboard for attendance, but I suspect no one was b!tching this much when he/she had to get fingerprinted to take the MCAT. Plus the attendance policy is so easy to get around - sign in and then go study somewhere else, go home, whatever, then sign out later. No one can tell the difference.

Why would a Touro CA student say anything about Touro NY aside from the fact that they may have interviewed there for 1 day, or they heard from "their friend"? They don't take classes here, and they don't know the exact details except for rumors/hearsay. Touro NY definitely has its issues, but Touro CA is FAR from perfect (just message bth7 about it)

And yes, I had issues with the sales pitch too - seems like they're preaching to the choir - but I'm pretty sure you'll get a little of the pro-DO message from other schools too, as they try to promote the "distinction" between MD and DO. And yes, in my experience MDs and DOs have been the same, but I suspect this has more with how they perform as individuals: their pre-clinical grades, board scores, rotations, no matter what school they go to. So yes, if Touro NY was not a good fit for you, that's great that you realized it, but please don't act like just because you spent ONE day here and read some rumors on SDN that you know everything there is to know about this school.

....the opposite of Touro Ny

Why is it the opposite? NY doesn't even have a match list yet, so you can't compare where the match will occur. As another student at Touro NY, I like the way the administration tries to respond to student needs. Yes, the school is imperfect, but there are many ways in which Touro excels. The student government is incredibly active and motivated to get things changed for the better in our school, and is not merely a budget committee that appropriates funds to different clubs and a means for popular people to get leadership extracurrics that I've seen other schools exemplify. Those "Orwellian" fingerprint scanners are being fought against mostly by second years. I personally don't see the big deal. As coffee said, it's just how Touro chose to record attendance, and I don't see it lasting b/c it's inefficient and people find a way around it anyway.

Other pluses of the school:

Being in NYC, we have access to some of the teachers who are also teaching at some top-notch schools in the area, eg the anatomy professor who has been praised over and over on these touro boards (mostly by me, probably). Although I hate histology right now, the histo prof is also from a reputable school.

Many opportunities to participate in meaningful extracurrics. School helps you set up research opportunities in places like Columbia or Mt. Sinai, or will partially fund conferences to SOMA for example.

We have rotation sites. The third years so far like it for the most part. The worst thing I've heard so far is about commuting, but even Far Rockaway, which is about 2 hrs away from Touro by train, despite being a crappy hospital, apparently affords you more opportunity to do stuff. You rotate with doctors, not nurse practitioners, and they have been willing to teach. The other bad note on rotations is about it being overbooked for Psychiatric. But you have 3 more years to worry about that. I believe Touro when they said that the economic downturn shut off a significant amount of hospitals available to them, and the loss of many Manhattan hospitals to SGU students who pay to rotate there. I also believe that they are working to get more rotation sites, and will succeed by the time I am a third year, and am happy to have audition rotations/ electives in hospitals of my choosing anyway.

Touro has our best interest in mind. There are hired staff to ensure our exams are as difficult as potential board questions, in board-style format.

I can't say that with the same confidence in other places I've encountered in my experience. Touro fanaticism over, but honestly, it's just been a little pent up after hearing lots of people *cough* bth7*cough* complain about problems across all Touro facilities despite having encountered one Touro, which has nothing to do with the other Touro campuses.

today is 2 weeks + 1 day for me.. Interviewed on Oct. 19th.. Should I call??

Sometimes the admissions office mite be a day or 2 behind schedule so don't worry if they don't call you in exactly 2 weeks after your interview. They called me a 2 days after my 2 weeks were up; they also start calling after 4:00pm.

As for the attendance policy, as the other posters mentioned, it is basically not enforced. I have been to 8:00am biochem maybe twice since august; I don't scan in all the time. If you are doing fine in your classes they will leave you alone. We also have a dress code but no one seems to notice because it is not enforced.

Another note is we do have a few places where you can do all or mostly all of your rotations in one place so you do not have to commute between your 3rd year rotations.

I know who bth is, I read his posts, he obviously has some kind of personal vendetta with Touro and with DO schools in general. I can tell from his posts that he is very elitist which gives him little credibility. The match list for Touro CA speaks well of the school with many students staying in California for postgraduate education. I know a few Touro graduates who got into excellent residencies with graduates from top MD schools. I live about an hour away from Vallejo and that is just awesome for me. Of the three Touro schools, Touro CA easily had the nicest campus, I thought it was quite beautiful. Touro NY was basically a few floors in a run down building in Harlem, I found the students to be a bit unfriendly in NY(even a few CA students said this about the NY campus) but students in CA were a lot more open and I had no problems having my questions answered.

Which hotel do most of you guys stay at for the interview?

obed is at a conference.. those who interviewed 10/19 should get an email by friday, the latest Monday..

Good luck everyone!!

What I would give for an email that starts with "It is our pleasure..."

Are you serious???? Does that mean those who interviewed 10/21 won't hear until then too??? :scared:

yup... Ms Hunter told me. Would have saved a lot of battery on my phone had i known that

Did TourCOM ever deposit your check for the secondary? I submitted it over two months ago, interviewed, was accepted, and I declined the offer. But I still don't see it showing up on my bank statement!

They deposited mine the day after my interview. Maybe you luckily got out of that overpriced secondary fee!! :D orrr maybe they'll eventually find it and get yaaa  haha

they haven't deposited mine either..

They haven't gotten mine either, and it's been over 2 months. but shhh..don't tell anyone, let it be our little secret

I agree, I just found him to be very gruff, a 180 degree from Dr. Haight on the West Side.

I'm going to say this once and only once, Solanodoc, you obviously love Touro-Cali. Stop trolling Touro-NY with your passive aggressive attitude towards NY and go to Cali. People will go to the school they are meant to go to and you were obviously not meant to go to Touro-NY.

As for what you said before for Touro's rundown old building. It's a historic landmark, the Blumstein Department store, look it up. It was infamous during the civil rights movement. MLK Jr was stabbed there and a boycott was staged there due to no african americans being allowed to work there. The Apollo is across the street from our school. Bill Clinton works one block over. It's an awesome area with amazing history. You should have seen it during the inauguration last year. It was CRAZY and in a good way too. And also just as safe as any other part of the city. I know people might dispute me on that, but I've lived here 10 years, and have gone to school in that area for 9 of those 10 years.

Finally, Obed is not a jerk, nor is he gruff. He's one of the nicest guys at that school. He has never greeted me with less than a smile and when I ask him about what's going on with the admissions process for the next year, he'll tell us what's going on. Sometimes he'll sigh with all the work he has to do, but he won't complain. He works his butt off for us and I think it's rather amazing he can get decisions to people in 2 weeks. Don't forget, he IS the admissions department. Most places take longer to come up with a decision and tell their prospectives not to start calling until they've waited a month at least! coughNYCOMcough. It's not his fault he's at a conference. Maybe he should have mentioned it to the interviewees at the school, but it was not his choice to go. He is not the only member of our faculty at that conference. The conferences are important to keep schools up to date on academic life. Skip a conference and possibly be a little out of step with other institutions and all of a sudden, you're still in Fortran when everyone else is running JAVA.

In my opinion, as a third year student, the first years have it MUCH better than we did. First, they have us. Second, they have better teachers. Third, they have a better test schedule than we did. Fourth, they're going to have so many more hospitals than we currently do. Fifth, I visited the fourth and fifth floors for the first time yesterday and they're AWESOME! And they won't have construction workers in the building anymore. They have more places to study than we did. I could go on.

Most places take longer to come up with a decision and tell their prospectives not to start calling until they've waited a month at least! coughNYCOMcough.
