I'm trying to decide whether to apply to Tufts, BU or both. I'd prefer to choose one, not both. What are your thoughts?

All I know is that they are both reeeeeeeeally expensive. Factor in high tuition and high living expenses for living in Boston and you've got yourself some awesome and serious debt :scared: Cost is one of the factors that steered me away from the Boston schools, and most private schools in particular.

Tufts offered me an interview, BU rejected me 1 week after I sent them the $100 check that was their secondary. Apply to Tufts.

I agree - apply to Tufts - BU did the same thing to me!

I was deciding between those two too...I went with Tufts...for no good reason at all.

BU was good to me, but i didn't hear anything from Tufts before I withdrew from it. I was accepted to BU before I heard a peep from Tufts. Go with BU. The clinicals are better.

yeah apply to BU, great clinical experience, exposure to different patient populations, slightly cheaper than tufts tuition wise. They didnt eat my 100, so maybe they won;t eat yours.

I know alot of tufts students, they really like the school. Both good schools, I say you just eat the cost and apply to both.

Dude BU is very difficult to get into. They accept very few students since they have direct BA/MD program. mY cousin with decent grades and 37 MCAT didn't get accepted. But got into Univ. of Pittsburgh

I would say you should go with Tufts. I interviewed at both and I really liked Tufts and I thought BU was cold and impersonal.

I got into Tufts and then got off the waitlist at BU. I ended up choosing Tufts, can't really explain why. Both schools seemed to make an effort to find the "right students" and based their decision on more than numbers, definitely looking to minimize the total number of acceptances they offer. So the more you can do to represent you interest in Boston, and their school in particular, the better off you'll be.

Tufts is slightly more expensive but the location allows for MANY more commuting options. Both have solid clinical reputations although BU gets the edge because it is a BIG public hospital while Tufts using hospitals throughout the state. Big complaint at BU is class time in the 1st two years. Financial aid is poor at best for both.

This process is way too arbitrary though, if you are interested in being in Boston, apply to both, you can always turn down the interview. If not then skip both.

what the hell - apply to both. at the end of the day another $100 isnt going to hurt you.
if you have time and you're local and really only want to apply to 1 - go to the campuses [campi? haha] and check them out for yourself. i like tufts better, but i might be biased cause i know doctors who went there and loved it.

Why just throw your money away? I disagree with this post. If you're set on going to school in Boston for sure, then fine apply to both. But if you're not your $100 can be much better spent on something else or another app.

I went through this whole thought process last year and chose Tufts, but in retrospect I don't know what the hell I was thinking. Yes, they are fairly similar schools when you factor in location and reputation, but that doesn't mean they'll both respond to your app in the same way--as is clear from some of these posts. One might accept you while the other never even offers an interview. Who knows? I went through that whole business of choosing one school, but it really doesn't make much sense to me now. If you really can't afford to spend that extra $100, then I understand completely. But if you can afford it, it might turn out to be a very worthwhile investment...

I will just add, though, that I chose Tufts, basically because out of the 10 docs or so who I pumped for info, probably 8 of them thought more highly of Tufts.

im a member of the "this whole thing is a crap shoot" school - if youre going to apply to 1, why not apply to both? if you cant decided between them, then its not the specific school bringing you here, so it has to be their stature, location, etc - most of which are pretty similar. if you want a school of that tier in the boston area, apply to both. if not, spend the application fee on 2 other schools, or 1 other school, and drop boston all together. applying to both increases your odds of getting in - say you apply to tufts and dont get in, whos to say you wouldnt have gotten into BU?
what ever you decide to do -- good luck with the apps! 🙂

i might be a little biased...but here is 2 cents. i think bu's goal as an institution is to raise money w/o worrying about the welfare for its students...this is apparent in all aspects of the university (undergrad, masters, and graduate programs). therefore i dont think its worth wasting your money on applying to the school..since they like to take your money and then send you a nice letter after depositing the funds that you are not worthy of contributing more to the school...this is not to say that i did not apply to the school and did not interview there...but i know many people who were sent the courtesy letter after sending in a fair amount of money. from personal experience...i have had good friends you both love and hate the school. those who loved the school tend to be those who are more "cut-throat" in the academic arena...whereas those who hated it...were the more laid-back type. As far as tufts goes i have no complaints so far. i thoroughly enjoyed my first year. it's by far not as ridiculously difficult as some other schools but at the same time you learn what you need to learn and there is opportunity to go beyond. sorry if i sound as if i totally anti-bu but i have many friends you have dealt with a lot (*@#$ from the school and i just wanted to pass that on...don't mean to offend any terriers.

Yah What they said.

I have heard these sentiments on this board a lot this past year, and even told my friend to do the same, to drop BU and apply to Tufts, cuz of the sentiments of many on this board who echoed what this poster has said.

MabdulD,

So did you end up getting in anywhere, cuz I was looking at your profile and you seem to have some really good numbers and decent extracurriculars.

What is your home state? Are you from NC originally, or are you a resident of another state?
