dang..this is making me nervous! the medical schools have been pretty thrifty about handing out accceptances this past week. my acceptances thread hasn't been touched by SDNers in nearly a week. 😱
 
Yeah, the girl I worked with takes a class at Harvard and she overheard one of her classmates last night say that she was accepted to Tufts. If they call, I guess I didn't make the cut. I am checking my mail box at 12:30 and I think I am going to vomit. I am just praying for a waitlist right now....
 
dang i'm afraid there will be a tufts rejection letter waiting for me in the mailbox when i get back from work today...well i'm sick of this waiting game anyway.
 
Someone from last year must knwo if they call or mail it.

I am a current student at Tufts and I have never heard of them calling about a decision before July when acceptances are made off the waitlist. You should receive an envelope via snail mail with either an acceptance, "no decision at this time", or rejection soon if you interviewed in October or even November. turnaround time is 2-8 weeks post-interview, with most applicants hearing in about 6 weeks. If Tom Slavin told you that your interview group will hear around a certain time, he is probably right. good luck!🙂 btw, ALL decisions come in a thin envelope, so be sure to open it before you head for the trash can in despair! I have friends who can attest to the thin envelope, and seem to remember Mr. Slavin telling us the same thing.
 
Thanks Kate! Just checked the mail for today and it was empty so the wait begins for tomorrow. 🙂 At least I have The Vines concert tonight to take my mind off of it. 🙂

I just wish I knew what that girl's story was....

i just called tufts and they said that they'll be mailing out some decisions tomorrow. i interviewed second week of november and i'll get my decision in the mail... all the secretary would say: "we are not authorized to provide decisions over the phone".....argghhhhh!!!!!

anyone care to give them a call to try to see if they're willing to offer any hints of the decision that would be sent? hehehe

if you have chance to call them, could you check if decisions are mailed to campus address or permanent residence address? thnx. i'm too lazy to call again.
 
uh oh....that means we have to wait the weekend. uggg. I wish you didn't tell me that 😉
 
yes, tufts is definitely snail mail.... last year they ended up taking 500 plus out of around 800 (this includes wait list acceptances over the summer) to fill the class, though, so if you get wait-listed don't fret. if you interviewed at tufts, you've got a good chance.
 
i ended up calling them again.. 😀 anyways, they're mailing it out to your campus mailing address rather than permanent address.

i work at Tufts. want me to walk past the office and peek through the window to see what's going on? perhaps see if there are some full mail bins ready to go out? 😉

too bad they have my picture. otherwise i could make up some story about having to deliver a message, then go in and anonymously case the joint.

they mailed them yesterday. i called and had to have my address changed bc i'm going home for the holidays and i didn't want the envelope to go to my apartment accross the country! they were really nice and changed my address though - unlike at boston university.

does anyone know if tufts is usually more "stringent" (have higher expectations for stats for screening purposes) if you apply to their md/mba program? Thanks, it will be much appreciated. Also, has anyone received interviews recently that had their application completed in mid November?

To answer your question, it is not more or less difficult if you are applying to a combined degree program. I applied MD/MBA last year, and if I remember right I am pretty sure I got into the MD only first, then later got into the MD/MBA program (which I ended up declining, but still held my spot in the MD program).
 
WTF I got my letter from Tufts in the mail this morning. "Our Committee on Admissions has recently reviewed your application but has not yet reached a decision on your candidacy." I waited all this time, and I have to keep waiting. Is this s nice way of saying waitlist?
 
Sorry tremblez, you definitely got the shaft. Hopefully they will make the right decision sooner than later.

Does anyone know if Tufts is still giving out interviews, and if so, when do they stop? Thanks for the info...

It was a regular envelope with the Tufts logo, just like every other piece of mail they send out.
 
I got the same no decision letter? is that their waitlist?

I am claling my pre med advisor now to ask if that is their waitlist.
 
So my premed office siad that they never heard of a letter like that (doesn't mean it never happened) from tufts before and maybe they were flooded this year with late applications.

What do you guys think? Think it is better or worse than a waitlist?

I got it last year. I ended up getting a rejection but that was just me. I think you've still got a good shot.

I interviewed 10/15/01, received the hold letter in February, recieved a more bonified rejection later in the spring. I wrote letters of interest, intent, so on, and so forth. I mentioned in another post way, way long ago that my Tufts interview of 2001 was my worst by far. I unintentionally made the most arrogant comment about the Ivy league to a fellow who later referred to his own college as a "small private school; you never would have heard of it, in NJ". Don't be grossed out by that letter- keep your chin up and Tufts will see the light before yo know it. Just maintain a calm demeanor and organize a game plan. Right now I'm doiung the same thing with Case Western. I know chances are slim to none for me- but I'm giving it my best shot because this is something I truly care about.

Thanks man! I am not complaining really, I have an acceptance at another school but I live in Boston and I just don't want to get kicked out of town in Sept.

It is just so tough when you have no control over your own future. I know you never have full control over your future but other people are deciding where I live for the next 4 years. It is very frustrating. And I feel there is so little I can do at this point. I have already updated my file, sent a letter of interest, there is not much left for me to do, maybe another letter will help but I doubt it.

Waiting sucks, I can't wait till Aug when this is all over. But right now it is snowing so that is far away....
 
during one of the interview presentations, we were told that the majority of interviewees get one of those "hold" letters. they're actually better than the waitlist. if you're put on a waitlist, they close your file and won't look at you again until may or june. if you get put on hold, they will keep evaluating your file every few weeks until the end of the admissions cycle.

the woman sitting in the cube next to me is a Tufts student and initially got one of those letters. she was never put on a waitlist, she was simply accepted a few months after that letter.

from what i understood, in the interest of being fair to the people who interview later, Tufts tries not to give out too many spots this early. so if you didn't get an acceptance now, you're still in good shape. remember, more than 50% . . .
 
ahhhh **** now i'm getting all antsy. there best be a letter from tufts when i get home today!!!
 
i think it's the same thing as a 'waitlist'. apparently tufts doesn't hand out waitlists. i thought it was just "no decision", "rejection", or "acceptance". so, "no decison" = "waitlist".
 
Has anyone gotten a pre-interview rejection from Tufts? They haven't given me an interview, so I guess I probably be getting one at some time.

So in terms of Tufts accepting, what, like 500 out of 800 interviewed or something (I forget)- is that accepted outright or does that include off of the waitlist as well?
 
Hello,

I can clarify this letter for you all. After you receive an interview, the Adcom assigns a score for all the interviewees based on numerous factors such as MCAT, GPA, and interview. From this there are a possible three outcomes. You can receive an acceptance or a waitlist, which I am sure people are familiar with. If not either, you can be put on hold. This is not a waitlist in the technical sense, although you do have to wait some more. When you are on hold, you can be put on a waitlist (thus meaning you have to wait till about June to get a decision) or get an acceptance. They still look at you throughout the year if you are on hold and compare you to other people. Being on hold is considered abit better in the sense you can get an acceptance anytime in the year. but how can no decision be better than waitlist if shamthis got rejected last year off of the no decision letter?

Tufts has such great movement on their waitlist i thought i would be safe on it but now i am open to a rejection...

i wonder if anyone got an official waitlist...

Ongoing speculation will eat a hole right through your stomach and turn your head gray. Granted, I don't have an ulcer and my hair is not gray (scientists say there's no correlation between stress and gray hair; it's purely genetic), I was the same way last year--it was no fun. There's no need for anxiety, and don't forget that my story may have been atypical. My interview was terrible-- I probably deserved an outright rejection last year...stop worrying, please.

Always remember, you've got one. At the very least, you should be thrilled.

yea the "hold" sounds like a kiss of death. i'm assuming that when the committee meets, the applicants are given a set of points derived from their mcat, gpa, interview, etc and if they exceed the high cutoff point, you're accepted, if below the low cutoff point, ur rejected. if between those two points, u r either waitlisted or rejected. but i dunno whether hold cutoff is above the waitlist cutoff? 😕

whatever...drivign myself crazy thinkin bout this over and over. i just wanna be flat out accepted or rejected.
 
i think it's definitely better than a wait list b/c you are reviewed at each committee meeting...although it does suck b/c we don't know anything for sure yet. does anyone know how often tufts adcom goes to committee?

I too received a hold letter. A great interview very early in the cycle gave me hope for an acceptance right away, but, alas, I shall wait some more.

Here's where I rationalize the situation and explain why the held shouldn't worry.

1) Tufts takes 60% of interviewed candidates before orientation. I doubt that more that 30% were accepted in this first wave.
2) The dean said that this year they were being very careful about offering too many acceptances too soon.
3) Tufts seems to interview lots of Ivy league students who are also applying to lots of top ten schools. I'd bet that Tufts accepts many applicants early in the cycle (i.e. now) who eventually get into Harvard, Yale, Hopkins, etc. This would explain the low yield and high likelihood of getting in off of a waitlist, hold list, or whatever one wishes to call it.

A disappointment, but I'm completely happy with the thought of attending SUNY Syracuse if Tufts doesn't give the nod in 03 so it's not the end of the world for me.

Do not fret being put on hold. Although you could still be rejected, you can also be accepted as well. I know many of my classmates where this was the case. Once you get an interview, your chances are really good. 50% has been the case over years, but last year there were more accpetances given. I posted the exact stats that was given to us after we all matriculated.

Applicants Interviewed 775
Applicants Admitted 525
Applicants Enrolled 170

As you can see, about 67% were offered acceptances. The best advice I can offer is to send update letters and addidtional rec if you can. Whether put on hold or waitllist, this could help if you really want to come.
