I'm thinking about applying to the Tulane ACP program. Can anyone give me more info on this program? Difficulty? Statistics of getting into medical school including Tulane.

Currently I'm on two waitlists.

Thanks guys!

Yeah and I have a great bridge to sell you. 🙂

😀 okay, okay... anyone else with some decent info?

this ACP program can be completed in one yr. the deadline is coming soon..cant remember. Also, the main requirement is that you had to have been placed on a waitlist by a medical school in order to be considered.

did anyone apply to this program? 😀

Do they still have this program?

The ACP program is a great way to get into med school. Only requirement is that you have been waitlisted at a med school. I did it back in 2002-2003. You take the 1st semester classes with the med students. Treated just like a med student by faculty and by the med students. This means you are treated like part of the family. Do around the class avg in the three courses, and you're basically in. When I did it, 90% of the students who did ACP got into med school the next year. From talking to the ACPers who have come after me, it seems this trend has continued. Another bonus is that you don't have to retake the classes when you "officially" start as a first year, and you are offered the opportunity to TA in the anatomy labs, which most ACPers do.

The pharm program is great too.

Anyone here apply here this year? Ill be there in MS1 (most likely unless EVMS gives me a significant financial aid package) this upcoming Fall and would love to meet next year's ACPers. Ill always be preferential to my SMP folks whoever and wherever they are 🙂

Sending in my application tomorrow =)

k so I heard ACP is a really hard program compared to other three at tulane? what do the people in the program have to say about that? also does anyone know what they look for in application besides bein on a waitlist? does anyone know what gpa and mcat they accepted last year? does anyone have the stats accepted for the other three programs? thanks all

They said the 31st at the latest. Hopefully they don't wait until the latest.

Anyone know the OOS accept rates into Tulane?

I doubt they will wait till the 30, I probably will call on the 15 or 16th. I think the OOS/IS acceptance rate is roughly the same, don't have the numbers off-hand though...

Shannon said they meet on the 15th to make our decisions.

I just talked to Shannon. She said last time she checked there had 32 apps, but she has a lot more on her desk today. They usually recieve around 60 in the past years, gluck all 🙂

Don't know how many have been accepted specifically into Tulane Med, but 90% last year into med schools.

Didn't the application letter or something say that a majority attend Tulane though? Can't remember.

If you get in, how do you plan on financing this? I don't think we qualify for low interest student loans...

Financing is the main reason to attend Tulane's program. This is the only program, other than VCU's certificate, that's cheap enough that I can borrow the money from family, rather than having to take out loans.

True, the cost of the program is 12K and how much do you think everything else will be? Assuming you stay for the Neuroscience portion in the spring term...about another 10K?

I am thinking way to far ahead right now, but I am wondering how much the program will cost with housing and will I be able to get funds via loans? I am to scared to ask my parents...

One more week or so till we find out if we are accepted or not :scared:

I believe itll be over a week. I heard sometime around the 17th or 18th. As far as housing, if you're planning on deming pavilion you can check it out online. I pay 620 a month for 1 bedroom in a 2 bed 1 bath apartment...I have a randomly assigned roommate.

620 is not bad at all! Rollwave, you were in the Pharm program right? From your experience, do you think most of the ACP students fared well?

Most if not all ACPers get in. They all receive interviews and acceptances before any other program at Tulane....but the life they lead is definitely one of much higher stress than the average Pharm student. If you do well vs the T1 average and dont rub any faculty the wrong way you're all set for admission.

In general, I'd say that IF given the choice between the two I'd ONLY pick ACP if my MCAT was weak and I felt I couldnt improve it to MD standards. If you have a 31+ MCAT I think the pharm program is a much better way since you get an M.S. in a really relevant field AND it gives you the time to thoroughly enjoy the city before the hell of med school begins 😉 😀...just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the input roll! Is the Anatomy/Histology Course load that much heavier than the Pharm course load, or is it just because of the stress of anatomy? If I am accepted to the ACP program, I will have a tough decision between MUO and the ACP program. ACP seems to be a hidden gem.

Right now, I have a 30/3.6, and I don't plan on a retake. I just want to get in somewhere 😛

From what I've heard Anatomy is just that much heavier....and you have to do better than everyone else so I suppose the pressure stacks up.

either way I think 14 out of 15 in acp got in.

Thanks for the info again Roll. I can imagine Anatomy being rough and on top of that hacing to score highter than the average. If I do get in, it will an interesting decision to make. 14/15 is an amazing rate!:luck:

No prob. It'd be an easy decision for me, TULANE ALL THE WAY! 😀

Hey Guys,

I was in Tulane's ACP program last year, and I strongly recommend it... yes, you have to work hard and "beat the average", but keep in mind you're taking 2 of 4 med school classes. This is definitely do-able. I was forced to make the decision of the ACP vs Pharm programs last year, and I'm really glad I stuck with this route... (I'm an entering T1 at Tulane this year)

I've heard that with the Pharm program, the top few students get interviewed and get in, the next "tier" of students get interviewed, waitlisted, and subsequently (and usually) enter the ACP program, and I'm not quite sure what happens if you don't fall into one of those categories...

This wasn't supposed to be long but point is with the ACP program, you've got more of a "sure shot" to med school in a year... and trust me, you're still able to have fun while doing it 🙂 Good luck!

Thanks for the input!!! So does the 14/15 roughly hold true? I guess a lot of us will have a ton of questions once we find out our official status. Hopefully later this week or the next :luck:

For now, if I may ask, how did you finance the program? I was thinking of getting private loans partially, I realllly don't feel like asking my parents for money....

ACP is definitely the money program if all you care about is getting into med school. The big swing for me into Pharm was the fact that you get a M.S. at the end rather than a useless 10K certificate.

As far as the "next tier" of pharm students, they have the option to apply ED and get in the following year IF they were good students. Generally if you maintain a solid relationship with faculty you dont have any issues. Those that still werent able to crank out the best grades or those who just dont want to get jobs can then do ACP and knock out even more classes before they start med school.

I suppose I'm a bit of a risk taker so I went the MS route for the greater reward in my humble opinion. It was nice to take some classes outside the med school cirriculum and gain a bit of perspective on the science behind all those drugs we overprescribe

EITHER way, I'm all about the Tulane Pharm/ACP. They definitely let you get it done. I'd definitely do Pharm all over again and I'm sure the ACPers would say the same about ACP. Tulane is a great place 😳

Yup... 14/15 seems accurate. And there's probably about 2-3 that are not going to Tulane (a testament to how awesome the school and people are).

As for financing: I bit the bullet and asked Mommy and Daddy for help... basically because my private loans didn't come in time. But I know lots of people went the private loan route, and you might even be able to qualify for legit loans because according to Shannon last year, ACP students are considered as full time.

Congrats!!! Yeah, that 14/15 is directly to med school after program completion.

Woo, acceptance E-mail! They really got that out as soon as possible too.

Anyway, now that I have a decision between my top two choices (this and EVMS), does anyone know the percentage of students beginning this program who complete the program? I know that last year 14/15 who completed went to Tulane with no glide year (right?).

One of my friends got someone elses rejection letter. Seems like they may have rushed a little TOO much...I dont think he even knows his fate yet.

Grats Perrot! Unfortunately, I was not accepted, but I guess that will make my decision to go to MUO A LOT easier

Still Top 1/3 WL at EVMS, so if I get in there, might have a tough decision!

Perrot-b/w EVMS and Tulane, that is a HARD decision, both have great odds and would be a great experience. I think either decision you make will be great! Good luck!

I din't get in either, but I really thought you were gonna get in with ur stats Dr. Van. and I cant believe roll's friend got someone else's letter. Congrats Perrot!!! 🙂

I'm sorry Cutie 🙁 Do you have a back-up plan to ACP? I figure, what is meant to be what is meant to be. I thought I was competitive enough for ACP, but, the odds weren't in my favor. 😛

Ok so 14/15 people in last year's ACP program got into medical school - not just Tulane... a few people decided before Tulane interviews/admissions went out that they were withdrawing their apps and went to other schools.. so I'm not sure what the *official* stat for Tulane acceptances is.

I'm not aware of anyone that "failed out" of the program. For that odd person that didn't gain acceptance to med school (and this is not the norm fate for an ACP student), they must have either gotten below the average perhaps significantly or had some other issue with the faculty that prevented their acceptance to medical school. Honestly once you're in the program not only does the faculty want to see you, as ACP students especially, succeed but so do the former ACP-ers (who are often now anatomy or histo TAs). Therefore the resources are there and like I said it's rare that medical school admission is not granted.

Apologies if I sound like I'm repeating myself. 🙂

I'm really struggling -

an acceptance to acp and an acceptance to an awesome smp.

acp = very high guarantee of tulane med. muscles in the back that have been tense for four years, giving me the spine to pursue all of this have finally relaxed a bit. the signal of: I'm in. I got into med.

smp = an m.sc. in stuff i love. very rigourous programme. potentially could help me finally get an interview in canada (although unlikely!!!). on waitlist at yale this year. something like this could help get in next year.

could acp help as much? unsure... advice is that i could best choose the one that shows i can handle a rigourous 'hard sciences' load of work.

i'm agonizing here. like, bird in the hand is worth two in the bush...and am i just going for the riskier route because i subconsciously like punishment or still want to sabotage myself? therefore, i'm asking for feedback. any thoughts?

I did the SMP instead and got lucky 🙂. I'm glad to have the MS as well as an acceptance....but the way admissions are these days it might just be worth it to ACP and then go to Tulane.

Hey Rollwave,

Thanks for the response. I'm hearing that a lot across my friends, and that helps, to get that echoed. As one friend said today, i'm not as young anymore. i.e. risk is for the young.

i had a couple dreams back in april. one was being in anatomy at tulane, the other was about getting an email from my top choice school with 'acceptance' in capitals in the subject line. i was so excited, i woke up before getting anymore of such a great dream. i can't remember now if the smp was on my map yet. what i'm trying to say is, maybe the deus-ex-machina will descend and solve this problem with a third answer...

thanks again. how did your cohort in your smp do in terms of acceptances this year?

About 15/25 got in--the rest were waitlisted MOSTLY due to subpar MCATs. Some people didnt retake or did and didnt hit the 31+ score that really lands puts you on the map here at Tulane. BTW, not sure if you knew or not but ACP this year was DAMNED competitive. Congrats on your acceptance to the program! I know some people here that had great stats and didnt even get onto the ACP waitlist!!! Way to stand out! 👍

Hey!

Thank you everyone who has posted so far on this thread for the insight.

I just got accepted to Tulane ACP by snail mail yesterday, after interviewing in January and being put on the "acceptance range" wait list in March.

New Orleans is an awesome place, and I can't wait to live there!

I look foreword to meeting all of the other ACPers.

Danger

Thanks RollWave,

I'm searching options for housing now. Did you or anyone else live in Deming? How was that and has anyone heard about the Pappilion apartments through Tulane?

good luck for everyone trying to get in still!

Read the Tulane Class of 2011 thread, I think I posted about Deming there. Its convenient, but thats about where it ends...it still remains a popular choice for some. I, however, cant wait to move out of Deming. I find it constricting.

Just out of curiosity how did you guys show you were on a med school waitlist? Did you have to make a copy of the waitlist letter the school sent you?
