Tulane Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Awesome 👍

I hope to plan a trip down to there sometime this summer, or maybe even late spring and look for apartments. Kind of an informal second look day.

Also, to current tulaners, is there like an orientation of some kind? Or is it just a white coat ceremony type of thing?

Orientation & white coat which, though I'm not too much into ceremonies, was really fun! You will be asked to say something though, usually on "how you got there" so be prepared - we had lots of good/interesting/funny/sincere responses.

You know - you guys who want to come back for a second look should decide on a weekend together - online or even ask Dr. Beckman to send out an email maybe (not sure if that would work) that way you could meet each other and discover NO together.

i think this is a great idea. who's down for visiting tulane/nola on april 19th and 20th? or how about the 26th and 27th? braluk you down bro?

Oh yea? Im excited...what kinda things did you guys do for orientation?

Went tubing down a river all day. Really. Don't forget sunscreen.

it is currently 11 degrees here...and tomorrow there is a low of -1.
I can't wait to get to New Orleans.

So...

No one here seems to be concerned about the change in administration/new dean. Was this expected? Am I just out of the loop b/c this was a big surprise for me.

Is someone getting removed from office or is this an addition to the current administration? Dr Beckman and Dr. Cohn will still be around right?

I have no idea. I am just talking out of my ass.

Your explanation probably explains why no one is concerned about this recent development.

Thanks!

No one's shocked about the change of dean because we all saw it coming. The prior dean had been interviewing elsewhere for quite some time. Plus, people like Dr. Hamm. He's proven himself to be a capable leader these past couple of years, his department (medicine) is in better shape than just about any other at the school right now, and he has good people to cover leadership of the department while he covers leadership of the school. It was an uncharacteristically excellent move on the part of President Cowen.

Drs. Kahn and Beckman are Associate and Assistant Deans, respectively, and their positions are unlikely to be affected by this change for the foreseeable future.

in late march or early april? My father and I are going down there to check out the area and the school again so I could make a clear decision about where I will eventually matriculate.

If you can hold out until the weekend of April 13 - 15, you'll never look back..............

I think thats where ill be 🙂 Around my 23rd bday too 🙂

Im planning another vacation date with someone who interviewed with me there the same day and found on SDN haha. 🙂

There is a note-taking service set up. We have ten or so notetakers who are paid for taking notes. They spend about 3 hours outside of each lecture sprucing up the notes and making sure they're thorough. The notes are fantastic and are currently saving my ass for next week's tests. You definitely get your money's worth in my opinion.

Sorry. I have more questions about this if rebectar or any other Tulane students have a second.

Is this set up officially by the school? Who are the note-takers? Are they students. Random employees? Are there notes for every class?

How much is the service and for how long does it last?

How do they distribute this to the students? Is it released online or do we have to go to the school to pick them up? I am trying to maximize my laziness.

The note-service is something I'm all about b/c 90% of the time I don't feel like going to class.

This is a student-run service, the notetakers are students, there are notes for every class (except some labs), it's $80-85 for an entire semester (all classes) and it's distributed on a password-protected website. Also, you can buy an entire set of "old notes" from the class before you.

Gotta run, tests today!

Gross anatomy test today? Seems like everyone here (UC) and med schools across the board is having a gross anatomy exam today lol

Nope, we're done with gross, thank god. Now the only one who smells weird is Kai, but that's just normal for him. We have neuro, biochem and physio this semester (and Foundations).

By the way, Myrtle, who are you? Kai and I have our suspicions, but we're not sure. Send us a secret signal or something so we know. 🙂

$5 says Kai gets Weised during Thursday's heart exam lecture.

I would love to Weise rebectar, but don't think I have that much pencillin handy.

Hmmm...as much as I hate to lose my anonymity, I do love secret signals. I believe we looked deeply into the same large pupils recently? Now, who's Kai?

Ahhh...that narrows it down. 🙂 Those were some great pupils.

Kai is the hottest guy in the class of course...and the funniest, if you ignore all the terrible lies he spreads about me on here.

Not only that, I heard he is hung like a horse and has a thing for rebectar.

did u guys know that the word dork also means whales penis?
thats randomness

Or that a pig's penis is shaped liked a cork screw, or that Capuchin monkeys usually say hello by showing each other their erections, or that Male bats have the highest rate of homosexuality of any group of mammals that exist- especially fruit bats; man that site is interesting, but i should be studying for physio.

Really? That's how I greet people!

For anyone interested in seeing a picture of the new medical school building, you can go to the "Tulane Secondary Available" thread right here on SDN, go to page number 11 of the thread and see some. They are from January 2006 and are taken from a current first year during his interview here at Tulane. Remember, this was like 5 months after Katrina.

thanks for that. I wasn't sure how to set up the link. I thought I heard some classes for you guys would still be in the old building. I don't think the full move to the new building will happen with your class, and yes the old med school building is in great shape.

Yea im stoked!

I hope to plan to go down in April. only thing that sucks is that Im done with my masters at the end of July....and then start right away in August.

Hey guys, I think we have gotten a little off topic. Can we go back to talking about me?

Thanks,
HOLDEN

hahaha...oh man, sorry about that. F*ck! What were we thinking!

Can we promise to engage in sarcasm and mockery over the next four years?
It's my livelihood.

Where are the other girls considering the Big easy this fall? What happened to Caligirl?? I'm from Cali too!! Help me convince her to come boys!

i'm here. 🙂
i have a week off in april, so anytime between april 6 and april 15 would be awesome. i'm going no matter what, but i was waiting to see if there was any general consensus around here before i spoke up.
has anyone checked out the website for the forest isle apts in algiers that green arrow was talking about?

http://www.forestisle.com/index.htm

might be too far in on the west bank, but i hear algiers, especially algiers point, is cute and charming. i'm looking for a studio/1BR, but would love to be living near people i know.

ok, back to sperm whales and dorks and holdenC, please.

Thats pretty damn nice, how far is that away from tulane? I wouldnt mind living here in the one BR. might even try to find a roomie and split it like I do now.

It's about 7-8 miles away, a 15 minute drive according to Google maps. Unfortunately, I only found out about it after I got back from NO, so I couldn't check it out. It looks ideal on the website though: 24 hour security, pool, parking.

Guys, when I was down there most of the students told me that they lived in Uptown/the Garden District. I visited that area (among others) pretty extensively and it seemed like the best bet. The area does range pretty widely street to street (i.e. one street could be beautiful with mansions and the next crap), but it has coffee shops and restaurants and seems to have the most young people. Feel free to look around of course, I just wouldn't go anywhere TOO far from the school. I'll have my car down there (it's big so I can carpool people) but I can't imagine anymore than a 5-10 min drive when u have to get up at 4 for rotations.

Just my input.

BTW, Caligirl, what part of Cali? And Greenarrow, this might be a stupid question, but is your husband moving with you? You don't have to answer this but how old are you?

I'm a guy and I'm 28 (It's on my medapps profile), and my wife is moving with me. With that said, safety is definitely a concern for us. New Orleans seems to be pretty unpredictable. One block is really nice, and then you turn a corner and it's not so nice. So, living in a place like forest isle that is gated and has security is a big plus.

Whoops...sorry bout that. I really never check people's MDapps profiles...I'm not so into checking people's mcat scores. But anyways, thats great that you and your wife are moving, I'm not sure why I had it in my head that you were a girl. I totally agree with the safety comment, my parents and boyfriend feel that the only way I can live alone in NOLA (which I want to do) is to be in an apt building with a gate or doorman and lots of other people around. Anyways...sorry again.
