Tulane?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've seen 3 anatomy labs so far, and they all kinda look like dungeons. I think it's the nature of the beast. Does it really matter. You have a dead body on a table and you cut into it. Why do you have to be in some flowery special place to do it?

If their hospital looks like that, then it's another story. 🙂

It's not about being in a flowery special place. I thought the labs were very small and crowded for the numbers of bodies and people that would be in there during class... and it didn't seem well ventilated in there at all. I know that you're really only in the anatomy lab for a year, and not even daily, but I'd rather not be stuck in a poorly-ventilated room that reeks of a carcinogen.

I didn't think it was that poorly ventilated. They even pulled out a body while we were there, and I thought it was fine. I didn't notice that it was cramped either.

I actually preferred the separation to another lab where it's just one big room and everyone's in it. I imagine that the noise and everyone around would be distracting.

For what it's worth, daydreamer & I were in the anatomy lab when it wasn't in use. One student showed us his cadaver, but otherwise everything was closed up. So, maybe it didn't seem well ventilated when "in use." I suppose it was a little small, but most of the anatomy labs I've been in have been dungeon-like as well. And it is only one class, so I wouldn't pass up a place just cause of that.

Well I guess it depends on what schools you've visited to compare it to, but as I mentioned in my response above, I thought it had poor ventilation and was very crowded. As for attending classes, I understand the flexibility and where they're coming from with that, but I guess I feel like it'd be hard to trust your fellow students if they never show up. I personally would not want to work with someone who never comes to class, nor would I want them as my physician. There are some things you can't learn from books, regardless of what people think. But hey, to each his own. And I don't dislike Tulane, I just didn't like these two aspects of the school. They're things to think about, you know?

Ya I like the separation too. Every other school's anatomy lab has been in one big room and I imagine there would be a lot of chaos during class.

They showed us a cadaver while we were there as well, and the smell was overwhelming, whereas in other labs I've seen, a ton of bodies were out but covered with plastic, and you couldn't smell a thing. I just thought that was a bit odd. I guess the ventilating system might not have been on though, since they probably weren't supposed to show us the bodies.

Chaos? Hahaha For some reason, I just got this image of someone running around a large anatomy lab with a limb in their hands.

I highly disagree. Every person has their own learning style. If my physician learned best reading on their own, then more power to them. I understand there are a lot of things you don't learn from books, but I don't agree if it is a lecture based course about microbiology and your school provides all the notes anyways. You might have a hard time getting along with all the different types of learners in your future class......

Unless a lecture is straight from the book, there will be some things in the lecture that are not in the book. And I didn't say I wouldn't work with someone who doesn't go to class, I just would not want to. I can set aside my differences to do a job/project/assignment/whatever, but that doesn't mean I have to like what the person does.

From what I understand, even if you don't go to lecture you can get the notes through a note taking service. so, if you prefer to read through and make notes to yourself, you can do that without missing anything.

i this is what happens at a lot of schools.

Okay this is going to make me sound like a total idiot, but I just realized that when they say "note-taking service" they mean an actual person who takes notes. For some reason, I kept thinking they just meant posting the slides/outlines from the lecture online. If an actual person (or people) is taking the notes, that's a whole different ball game. In that case, I don't see anything wrong with not going to class.

the people that take the notes are students in your class that get paid.

Our 2nd year students told us that everything was straight out of the book, and specifically said that they wouldn't say something in lecture that wasn't available out of class. She said that there was so much material, especially in 2nd year, that she just thought it was more efficient to use lecture time to study so that you could breeze through stuff you understood better and spend time on what you needed. I understand where you're coming from, because I was surprised at all my interviews to find out how many students skipped lectures, thinking as you do that they were just being lazy/sleeping in. Now I really do think it's a matter of best learning style/use of time.

Yeah, this makes me feel a lot better. I don't know why I didn't realize this earlier. I just kept thinking they meant the professors posted slides. I'm a dumb@$$. Oh well. I honestly thought that a bunch of students were just being bums by not showing up, but this makes more sense. Wow, Tulane has suddenly jumped up in the ranks for me!

we have both. professors post their slides as well as a note service run by students from the class. also, we now have audio (and hopefully video soon) recordings of the lecture. i've been told the recordings were available in pass classes but i imagine everything was thrown out of whack after the hurricane.

i was just curious to what people did with their luggage the day of their interview? does the admissions office hold it for you?

Everything people are saying about Tulane looking for a "best fit" is awesome..I've visited there, have friends that go there, and know a physician that works there...I want, more than anything, to interview there..should I call and beg? I just want the chance to be evaluated in person by them.

Pls check my mdapps : )

I think you have a great shot. The fact that you have done international traveling is great. When I was there they told me that they really look for CA residents who can handle relocation, and so the fact that you have done international work definitely works in your favor.

I was really sad about today...so I called last week (have been complete for just short of two months now) and talked with a super nice lady on the phone. She assured me that if I called back today, they would be able to tell me if I had been reviewed yet or not (I hadnt been as of last Thurs). Soooo I woke up all excited today to call, and a super mean lady refused to tell me anything. She just kept repeating, "We will contact YOU when a decision has been made." Boooo hoooooooo!

I really love Tulane as well, and I've been on pins and needles for the past few weeks waiting to hear...any advice from people who have been there/talked to them?

Hey Scowdeva, have you ever re-checked your completion date with them? Two months seems more than enough time, and when I called ~3 weeks ago, they said they were reviewing apps completed in mid-august. Not sure if you saw my thread from last week concerning Tulane, but the reason I ask if you re-checked your completion date is because they have given me inconsistent completion dates for my app. When I called on 9/6. they told me I was complete. When I called on 10/4 to see if my app had been reviewed, they said it would take a while because they now claim my app was complete on 9/27 😡. The person I talked to on 10/4 wasn't very nice either, as I tried to get some reason as to why my completion date changed...

she just kept repeating "there's nothing I can do about it."

Have you guys ever considered that the reason some of these people "aren't very nice" is that they have 40000 pre-meds calling them every day about their files?

I'd give them a break and be polite.

I'm just saying..........

Anyone call Tulane about a decision being made post-interview? (excluding EDP). I called today and they told me no decision has been made and once it is, it will be mailed.

Dr. Owens mentioned our decisions wouldn't go out until next week, so I'm not going to bother calling them this week. But thanks for trying and posting! 🙂

I interviewed at Tulane last week and I felt so bad for the receptionist... Her phone literally rang nonstop with people checking their status and asking about decisions, and I'm sure that even if a decision has been made she can't release any information about it. Just do your best to be patient everyone, they have twice as many applications this year as they did at this point last year, so I think their system is a bit overwhelmed. Good luck to you all! :luck:

So has anybody heard anything at all from Tulane yet?

Thought I saw someone post yesterday in the official acceptance thread that they called tulane and were told they had been accepted. I believe they interviewed on 9/27. I also think someone called this past Monday who interviewed on 10/1 and was told no decision had been made yet. I'm just going to wait for my letter, which I'm guessing should go out next week. Unless, of course, I see that someone who interviewed on 10/1 was told their decision on the phone! Good luck guys.

ya I'm just gonna wait too. I'm scarrrred though:scared: Congrats on the acceptance to GW!

Yup that was me. I called yesterday and was informed of the decision over the phone. I called during that status update window they have on Tuesdays and Thursdays as mentioned on their website.

I submitted my secondary sometime in july and then got an interview on sept 26th. I was very impressed with Tulane. The new building was very nice but the biggest thing to me was how happy and how "normal" the students were. I could definately see myself going there, fitting in and being happy. All of my interviewers stressed that they look for people who will get along and fit in. I felt very confident leaving the interviews that I would be accepted, and sure enough I called yesterday and I was in--yay.
I haven't seen any other anatomy labs, but Tulane's wasn't bad, it smelled a little of formaldehyde but it was my understanding that is normal. What I thought was really cool is that their lab is open pretty much all the time so you can go do dissections whenever you want, at night, in the morning, whenever, so I thought that was pretty cool. but overall I really liked Tulane!

I totally second these sentiments. Also, the food in New Orleans was amazing.

I interviewed on 10/12 and I'm already super anxious!! They said I would have a decision in 2-3 weeks...the waiting is going to kill me. Please show me some 😍 Tulane!!! 😀 Make my dreams come true! 😉

So I'm assuming you interviewed on 9/26?

Actually now that I think about it, I interviewed on the 27th, it was a thursday.

And yes the food in NOLA is amazing, and all the students said they get 4 or so days off for Mardi Gras, which going to Mardi Gras while in Medical School, is awesome.

If you got a notice from Tulane, post your interview date and when you got the notice.

Did some assistant dean of admissions woman interview you guys? She seemed nice, but I got screwed into a less friendly guy.

i think it also depends on how long your interviewer took to turn in your interview report...

I just called to check my status and was told that they were still waiting on the commitee and to call back next week. I interviewed on 9/21.

Same here.

I interviewed the first possible day, 9/17. Thought my interviews went well, but I guess not.

Really irritating....

I tried to call again today to see what was up, been complete for two months now and havent heard anything, and the same stressed lady answered the phone. She wouldnt divulge to me, not even my exact completion date (I asked to verify, and all she would say is 'end of august'). Sadly, I'm making myself accept that I will probably be getting the rejection letter in the mail, and they dont like saying that over the phone. Does anyone know if they send out bulk rejections, or as they go? I know a bunch of people posted up on the rejection board on 9/24, so if they send them once a month I guess I might not have to wait too much longer...

Is Tulane just backed up or do they just not want to give us bad news over the phone?

I wouldn't necessarily assume that. It's usually the policy of most schools not to give out info over the phone. Top that with Tulane who doesn't screen secondaries and appears to be completely swamped.

At any rate, there is really nothing to do but wait. Either way, you are on their schedule.

It's the adcom's world, we are just living in it.

Is Tulane just backed up or do they just not want to give us bad news over the phone?

I think they are completely swamped honestly. I am applying there through the rural medicine program and have had issues related to the bulk of applications they get.

I wonder if they will start screening secondaries......

interviewed 9/24, i just called and they said i was in! 😀 they snail mailed me something on monday, but i live far away, so it hasn't gotten here yet.
