Tulane?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed 10/4. Just called, and no decision yet.

I get the feeling that my interviewer is really busy. Half of my interview group was scheduled with him.
Did you interview with Father Don?

AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! i JUST CALLED! I'M IN!!!! First acceptance!!! Okay, i'm tired i've been running around the apartment screaming like a maniac. Ohh boy!

Oh sweeet! Hope to join you. Congrats.

Aw, congrats! I have to wait at least until next Friday before I can start calling...sigh. 🙄

I interviewed with Father Don, and the former dean of admissions I think, Dr. Tomlinson or something.

Was your interview with Father Don really short? Lol, cause mine sure was...I hope that wasn't a bad thing!

umm... We took up the entire time, i think 30 minutes, but I remember thinking that it went by quickly. Hope that helps.

I interviewed with Dr. Beckman (the dean) and Father Don, the first day of interviews. I think my interview with Father Don was disastrous, looking back on it. The tech guy, who was setting up Father Don's computer, kept interrupting us. He seriously came in three different times, and they got into back and forth conversations about which Windows to use, etc. It didn't seem to bother Father Don too much, and he didn't really acknowledge that it might be difficult for me or rude. Soooo weird. Our conversation, thus, was a little strained, as we never got a chance to establish a repoire. Luckily, Dr. Beckman and I really got on very well. I came away with a good feeling, thinking that Father Don probably wouldn't have much to say one way or the other, but...
Now I'm nervous. They're obviously balking over something in my file.
Tulane's my second choice, and creeping up; I really hope I hear soon, 'cause this s*#t has already ruined my upcoming weekend...

I interviewed with Father Don also. And yeah, it was pretty short. I don't know if it went well or not. He seemed kind of uninterested and had forgotten what my answers were - when he went to write them down he repeated them all wrong to me. My interview with Dr. Beckman also was great and I felt confident leaving her office.

I hate waiting though... I interviewed on 9/21 and still no decision yet they say...

would anyone like to comment on how they felt their jaffe interview went?

i thought it was really hard to tell with him too, but i figure if i didn't totally think he hated me then maybe i'm okay. there were others in my group who had more negative experiences with him, but i thought he was a fairly nice (if not super outwardly-friendly) guy.

that's what i thought too. i was just hoping these kids that were accepted didn't have him jumping on the table or grinning like crazy.

I should also add that my other 2 interviewers said they were writing positive reports, so I feel like if he wrote a negative one then i'm gone.

oh, i couldn't really read him either. it didn't seem like he liked me, but it didn't seem like he disliked me. plus he wrote down every single other school i've interviewed at, and asked me how i liked those schools. and my other interviewer didn't really ask me questions; i asked him questions almost the whole time. (i'd try to talk, but he kept on asking for questions...) i heard the student interview is really important, and i felt that one went well. so, i did not walk away from tulane thinking it went really well. anyway, it's also important to remember that the interview is only a part of it, and they also evaluate the whole application...

Well he was my first med school interview/interviewer ever, so I kind of went in there not knowing what exactly to expect. With that being said and in hindsight, I think my interview was pretty straightforward and the only time I got any real strong response from him was when I told him how in my estimation my parents would probably hate New Orleans.

Anyhow, other than that, I left the interview feeling pretty comfortable, but not necessarily super (this being my first interview). However, the applicant who interviewed after me later told me he had glanced at Dr. Jaffe's notepad and he had seen that Dr. Jaffe had written something to the effect of "I like him" under my name. However, I didn't necessarily get that impression on my own.

Does Dr. Beckman ever write bad reviews? She seems so nice.

I had dr. beckman & father don. For what it's worth, the other interviewers all had father don first and said he only spent 15-20 min w/each of them. I knew that, so I did my best to see if I could keep the conversation flowing, and made it the full 30 min. But my theory is that it doesn't matter. I think he's an experienced interviewer, and that especially for early interviews, he probably moves fast because he's already sold. Also, I think he tries to write up his reviews of innterviewers during the time he "creates" between interviewees. At least, that was my impression. Good luck guys!

I had Dr. Jaffe and Dr. Litwin as my interviewers.

I think that my interview with Dr. Jaffe went really well; he was more reserved (as others have noted), but really warmed up during our conversations about New Orleans and community service. He's a really interesting guy.

My interview with Dr. Litwin was similar, I just got a little flustered while repeating my academic history to him (he didn't hear it correctly the first time, but didn't let me know until later). He was also a neat guy who loves New Orleans, but I left with a less settling feeling after the interview.

I was happy immediately after my interviews, and then slightly nervous a little bit later, but it's only natural to start second guessing yourself after so much time has passed. Tulane seems to really be swamped... I was EDP and didn't get my acceptance until 10/5.

For those of you who are nervous, how did your student interviews go?

For those of you guys who interviewed, what time did you finish? I know in the invite it said we'd be done by 230pm, but I'm wondering how true this ends up being.

Thanks!
I interviewed this past week. Sadly, I did not feel like my first interview went well. It was my first interview ever, I got tripped up on some soft balls or at least didn't speak very confidently and felt like the interviewer jumped to the next question nearly while I was still answering his last. Afterwards, like a *****, I actually apologized for being so nervous (at this point: tanking hardcore). My second interview went great from what I could tell, we ran over our allotted time and he then offered to walk with and show me to where I had to be next since he would be walking right by there (I needed all the positives I could get after the first interview and he could have just said "alright see you later" after we were done so I told myself this was a really good sign). I also thought my student interview went pretty well. I had never been to New Orleans and I was actually a little unsure about Tulane going in to the trip, but in a way excited about the school that showed me love first. Now, I am without doubt that I would love to be a member of Tulane School of Medicine. The people that are there and the atmosphere that they create both at Tulane alone and in New Orleans in general, was very impressive and highly desirable for someone like myself. It really seems like a good fit. I'll be crossing my fingers for the next 2-3 weeks but will keep in mind that tanking so hard at the beginning may have actually been the death of my application to the Big Easy.

thinking back, I got so overly relaxed talking with my second interviewer that I believe I used the phrase "super-cool". Whether good or bad, that sums up the process.

I can't remember exactly when we got out, but it certainly was not later than 230.

Is Tulane still processing our applications or are they just avoiding a discussion of bad news over the phone?

My theory (based on complete conjecture and no facts) is that if they had already made the decision to waitlist or reject us then they would say something like "a letter is in the mail" or "we will contact you" or something along those lines. They told me to call back next week so I'm hoping that they just have not decided yet.

has anyone received an acceptance letter? or has everyone who has found out so far called the tulane admissions office?

as an undergrad at tulane, and after interacting with many med students, I can honestly say that Tulane has the most chill and noncut-throat MDstudents in the U.S. They study hard but at the same time they are laid back and know how to enjoy the fruits of new orleans.

How hard is it to get LSU or Saints tickets if you go to Tulane?

i think it's harder now compared to last year. when i was there (monday night football!), some students were kicking themselves for not buying them the previous year when they could.

Is Tulane like the biggest party medical school out there with all the rescources of New Orleans?

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who could not read Dr. Jaffe. My interview with him went for a while (30-40min), but he seemed to have some air of indifference except to say he did not like the "touchy feely, warm and fuzzy" part of service learning, etc. I mean the conversation went well, I guess my other interviewer was just so affable (Dr. Doucet). He was a peditrician and it showed. We talked about everything: working with kids, cooking, my family, my travels in Texas, Spain, the obesity epidemic, art, and fun things to do in New Orleans. He was just so nice.

You know this from your interaction with Tulane med students compared to the interactions you have had with students from the rest of the med schools in the US? You get around.

For what it's worth, I haven't been *all* over, but I would agree with the general impression of an extremely laid back and friendly student body that is really cooperative and enjoys New Orleans. Apparently the students are really tight-knit and hang out a lot together. In part that's probably because many students aren't from the area and don't have friends/family there already. In fact, some students who were there to answer our questions talked about how one of the med students hosts a Sunday dinner in a huge place he shares with some other students, and that tons of the med students go every week (40 students?) - everyone does pot luck.

Then again, I could say the same thing genearally about UVM. No grades, and not even a ranking system at all (residency letters apparently explain why at UVM they completely do away with a ranking system). Students are incredibly friendly and cooperative, and my student host said that many of the faculty will actually say at the end of lecture in the afternoon that they expect to see everyone out on the slopes in an hour - and that you actually do see the profs out there! Work hard, play hard, as my student tour guide said. He also talked about a prof who recently invited the entire class (to his house I think!!) for dinner and a movie, and how everyone brought their kids and dogs and hung out together. And, like Tulane, everyone posts all of their study guides and helps out other students. In fact, there is a research or teaching segment in the fourth year, and fourth years TA the classes for first years and help mentor them.

Similarly with Loyola. Perhaps not as much play hard, but the students I've met have been incredibly supportive and friendly and laid back. In other words, "chill." Really not a gunner environment at all.

LSU tickets?????

Go choke yourself!

j/k, the best way to get LSU tickets is to befriend a student at LSU and get them to hook you up. LSU plays in Baton Rouge, not New Orleans (unless they are playing Tulane or in the Sugar Bowl) so you'll have to drive up to see it (about an hour and a half drive). Saints tickets aren't hard to get. But the good tickets are tough.

well when you go to interviews at other schools you usually interact with the med students at those schools. Ive had four interviews so yeah i guess i get around.

Are we allowed to call Tulane to check on status outside of T,Th 10-2pm? Has any tried and they got irritated?

Thats what I figured. Sorry if I sounded harsh - I was just messing with ya.

FYI: I just spoke with Father Don (he had provided his phone number during the interview and said he encouraged calls re: status), and he apologized for giving incorrect information - the decisions for those of us who interviewed on 10/1 will not be sent out this week. Rather, they were mailed last week! So, if he's right, the letters should arrive this week! I didn't ask him if he knew what my decision was cause I figure he would have volunteered that info if he knew off-hand or remembered. Here's to stalking the mail man (or caving and calling on a Tues or Thurs to find out).
