Tulane?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
as an undergrad at tulane, and after interacting with many med students, I can honestly say that Tulane has the most chill and noncut-throat MDstudents in the U.S. They study hard but at the same time they are laid back and know how to enjoy the fruits of new orleans.

Hey, I heard Mrs. Mae's caught on fire. Did it burn to the ground? Is it re-opening?

New Orleans wouldn't be New Orleans without the "Club".

It didn't burn to the ground. I'm not sure when they will be reopening it though.

Any of the early interviewees receive anything snail mail yet regarding their status?

That sucks.

That, the hurricane, and the time that drunk person drove their car through the front doors, where probably the only time they have ever had "last call" there.

Not yet, I'm anxiously awaiting the acceptance packet. I did move to another address than the one they had for me at Tulane and I updated it last tuesday but I think they had already sent the packet out, so I'm going over to my old house to check today to see if it came. Hopefully they've got some other pre-med mail for me over there!

I believe I interviewed in the first week that interviews were held, and I haven't received any snail mail. I'm really hoping to receive something today or tomorrow!

Has anyone tried calling them during a time outside of the window listed on their website?

They said "application status check is between the hours of..." verbatim. What do you think will happen if you call them outside of those hours? I'll give you a clue: It's going to sound like "application status check is between the hours of..."

So I just got my acceptance letter today. Anyone know if emailing a written response confirming the acceptance suffices, or do they want a snail mail response for their record?

Thanks

I interviewed on the 8th. I'm gonna call tomorrow. Hopefully I'll return with some good news...

I got nothing 🙁
I want to cryyyyyyyyy. anyone get waitlisted/rejected today post-interview?

nothing here either 🙁 i'm definitely going to call tomorrow. but congrats again to everyone who got acceptance letters today!

Received an acceptance letter today. Couldn't be happier... My top choice and a school I've wanted to go to for a long time.

Congrats to the those accepted and good luck to those still waiting.

When was your interview?

here's to calling tomorrow...and hopefully some good news for all of us 😳

yeah its killing me that i have nothing....this doesnt feel like a good sign.

Just called. It's the "acceptance range" or waitlist for me.

Yeah, just called as well. "Acceptable range". The waiting begins.

hey all sorry for the acceptable range. I know last year my heart jumped when I heard accept and sank when I heard the range part. definitely keep updating your file as they seem to like people who show an interest.

Does anyone get outright rejected after the interview or is everyone in the "acceptance range"?

looks like it's the waitlist for me too 🙁

I remember they said on interview day that they add up all of the parts of your application, including your interview, and if your number falls between 1 and 5, you get a rejection. If you're between 6-10 you get an acceptance or acceptable range. They said that they then accept people off of the acceptable range based on their score (i.e., those closest to 10), also taking into account their desire to build diversity into the student body as well.

👍 They did say at my interview day that they were giving outright acceptances to fewer applicants this year so as to have more "acceptable range" movement this year than last. Good luck guys! :luck:

As far as I know there wasn't any last year (and if there was, very very little). Tulane is not very good at gaging what percentage of people will accept their offer and in the past have been put in the situation where too many people have accepted spots (and no, nobody gets acceptances rescinded, though it'd be a cinch to get a deferment if you wanted one). In the end Tulane's acceptance rate would be much lower if they could learn to play the game like some other schools (and thereby up their rankings a bit).

also to note... some people at the top of the acceptable range that aren't given a spot do get offers to enter Tulane's anatomy certification program (ACP) in which you take anatomy/embryo, histo, and neuro with the med students. Its basically a sure way in the next years class if you do well. You then TA those courses during your first year.

To thoes of you who have recieved interview invites~ how did they let you know... email, letter, etc?

Were the acceptances sent by snail mail? Was it sent by thin envelope or big packet of stuff?

Snail mail. Skinny small envelope (only a single piece of paper inside). Definitely worried me when I saw it, but it was an acceptance!

Ahhhh! That is the biggest mindf*** I have ever heard of. I am going to be so scared to open that envelope (should I receive one - fingers, toes, and eyes crossed). It would be so much easier on us if they just send a big fat packet for an acceptance..

I called and was told that I was accepted. I interviewed on 10/12. Hope this helps! 🙂

Actually, I've noticed that most acceptances (from my personal experience) come by small skinny envelope: Tulane, Loyola, RFU. Skinny is the new fat. The only one that came in a large envelope was GWU, but it was also skinny, and they emailed first.

It is odd how some schools do it though. There's a lot of variation. For instance, Tulane just sent a single piece of paper stating it was an acceptance. They ask that you respond in writing to accept the offer, and that a $500 deposit is required anytime prior to May 15 (it sounded like it was non-refundable). For comparison, Loyola places an acceptance letter, your form to send back, and a pre-addressed pre-stamped envelope (very nice). They require no deposit to hold your place. Go figure.

Phoenix how did you find out about this system of rating? How sure are you about the concreteness of outcomes associated with these scores.

Dr. Beckman told my interview group that at our "introduction to Tulane talk" early that morning when I interviewed. If I got any of it wrong, someone please correct me!

Dr. Beckman seemed so cool. How much do interviewers weigh in on the decision. I have heard not much and I have hard a dignificant amount. For those that say not much, I think that they mainly say that its just to get to know you and make sure you are normal human being.

Interviews at Tulane most definitely count for more than at most other schools.

So my shakey first interview probably is going to hurt me more than I hoped...nerves really got to me during my first ever med school interview.
