U of Waterloo 2011 Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yessirrrrr!!!
Now i can focus on my exams!!
haha!!

LOL I was so scared I didn't get it,

the interview invite went to my junk folder...

guys, check your junk folder too lol

thanks so much hanj 7. it also went to my junk mail and i was getting really nervous as to why i wasn't getting a response. 🙂

Well I guess my philosophy was wrong. I didn't get an interview, which I'm very suprised about. My gpa is 3.9 and I have a degree with excellent work experience (not pharmacy related, but healthcare field). So I guess my philosophy was wrong. Maybe the four prerequisites I'm picking up this summer made the decision. Did anyone else need 3 or more prerequisites get an interview?

What prereqs were you missing? If they were thermodynamics/organic chem I can see them not sending out an invite.

They were Thermodynamics (which Louise said is a typical prereq most people are missing), genetics, another bio and biochem.

That really sucks. But with your grades, you'll get in next year for sure. Maybe they will have started the PharmD program by then.

Did you also apply to U of T?

No, i didn't get an interview as well and i was missing 2 labs plus 3 courses. Good luck to everyone that got an interview.

Hey,
I didn't get an interview either... it's the missing courses - i was missing three (i thought I was only missing two, but according to UW organic chem is actually two courses - for my school its only one).
My GPA is really high too, and i've got many years of Pharmacy, hospital experience.
For those who are missing courses and DID NOT get in, DON'T WORRY - Don't give up, all you gotta do is just complete those courses maintain your gpa or get an even higher one and maintain those volunteer positions/jobs and APPLY AGAIN 😀

life is still good, trust me 😉

Hi i also applied but i got rejected. My overall gpa was around 84% and i have volunteered at the hospital. I was wondering the people that got an interview invite for the 2010 waterloo pharmacy please can write down the stats..

Thankyou and best of luck to those who received the emails...

Congrats to all those who got it AND also the ones who didn't get it (for all their hard work and endurance!)

It seems like they were very restrict with those prerequisites 🙁

When I saw this, I got almost as sad as I got when I didn't get an interview for UofT myself 🙁

But you know what: this means that I will have a positive and cheerful person like you as my classmate in two years 😀

So are you gonna take that Calc course and write the PCAT to apply to both UofT and Waterloo next year?

Did you also apply to U of T?

Hey Byork. Thanks for the words of confidence. I did apply to U of T. I had my interview March 27th. I'm not confident there either because my pcat was 71st percentile. Great in the sciences and math but terrible in the english sections. My interview went well though, so hopefully that shows I can speak english. lol. I don't think the interview will have much weight this year though. But that is a very good point you make. Both U of T and Waterloo may have the PharmD program for the next admissions cycle.

aww you're so sweet.. 😍
honestly, there's no point of sulking over this - don't give up, try and try again but don't make the same mistake twice 😉 so apply to many universities, don't limit yourself - try other provinces .. that's what i've been telling myself. yeah i still don't know about UofT, i'm still thinking if I should consider it .. i'll be applying ffor med as well since I'll be in my third year next year. 🙂
don't forget we're still in our early stages of uni.. some ppl have completed their degrees and applied
good luck on your exams!

should i make a thread for UW School of Pharmacy 2012? LOL

edit - I just did.. since the cycle opens up again in September 2010

can people PLEASE, PLEASE, Please write down there stats of who got an interview...thank you

can people PLEASE, PLEASE, Please write down there stats of who got an interview...thank you

Yes, I would really appreciate that too. Can those who got an interview also mention whether or not they had all the courses done? Thank you so much!

Stats:

3.7 gpa...(a bit higher when converted to percentages... about 82%)
after this month will have finished Biochem, and all pre-reqs done since last year
also working as a pharm tech since July 09 + hosptial volunteering + tutoring + research experience in different fields of study

3.74 gpa (looking to be around 3.8 by the end of this year) which is guess translates into a measly 82% or 84% by the end
i had all of the courses completed and am in fourth yr biochem

little to no pharm experience but alot of other extracurrics.(hospital volunteering, president of clubs, tutoring, work at a gym lol etc etc). i filled out everything on the AP.

good reference letter from a pharmacist

best of luck to everyone

wow ur gpa is really good. did your reference get your letter on time? are u missing courses? that is probably what it is.

i have 80% average, pharmacy experience since last year to present, all pre-reqs, volunteer experience and a few ECs and i am graduating this year.

good luck for the 2012 next cycle!

i was rejected as well...

4th year student at u of t.. double major in biomedical toxicology and human biology and minor in psychology .. 3.15 gpa .. volunteer experience at the hospital.. work experience in sales and with the federal government .. only missing the microbiology course

wow ur gpa is really good. did your reference get your letter on time? are u missing courses? that is probably what it is.

I had all the course requirements but my reference was NOT a pharmacist, doctor or nurse. My reference also handed it in on the last day.

I'm at the University of Guelph.

I have an 82% average and completed all of the prereqs.

I've shadowed a hospital pharmacist for 3 days, and worked at a retail pharmacy for three months on the weekends. I think I had an alright letter of reference, but it definitely wasn't stellar. (The Pharmacist said she couldn't fill out a few sections because she didn't know the answer, ex. what my leadership skills were.)

I was a RA/Don for one year in rez. I also arranged a bunch of study sessions, trips etc... because that was in my job description. My whole floor was biology students, I had to make it academic.

I am an undergrad rep on the board that oversees the university center.

I am in a fraternity (believe it or not, there are a few in Canada) and we do some charity events.

I also backpacked for a whole summer (3 months) around Israel and Egypt and did some volunteering for a month.

hey everyone,

got an interview as well

cgpa around 81% completed all the pre-reqs.
graduating this year
lots of volunteer and activities.
shadowed a pharmacist for like a week and thats it 🙁 wasnt thinking i would get one since they are keen on pharm experience.

got lucky i guess!

EyeCandy, you and I are in the same position.

I don't know if I should go to U of T or UW (assuming I get into both).

We have all those prerequisites for Waterloo, don't you think that our first years will be empty at U of T?

Organic chemistry, physical chemistry, statistics, etc...

are you takling about exemptions? Yeah i think it spans first and second year. Im leaning towards u of t... if its not too obvious lol

Yeah I am.

But why do you want to go to U of T? I mean, we can get like 4 or 5 exemptions at least.

At UW, they're using that time to teach other stuff. Don't you feel like you're losing out?

Wouldn't getting exempted from UofT courses mean that you will replace your courses that you have with other courses? so you won't lose out.. you'll just be ahead wouldn't you?

lots of reasons
u of t has been around for longer
uw has barely received provisional accreditation.. i know it will be fine by the time the first class graduates.. but ive heard horrible reviews from the first two entering classes ( i know 7 people whove gotten into UW in the span of the last two years)....

and i also think living in toronto is WAY MORE AMAZING than kitchiner... dontcha think?

why do u want to go to u of t? im guessing thats ur first choice too

no actually you can't fill them with upper year courses... u just have a better timetable... less school.

It is, but it hasn't always been.

I mean, with all those exemptions I could have a GREAT first year. Especially living in Toronto, I can have a lot of fun. And there's all my friends from the area who I had to leave when I left for Guelph three years ago.

Also, I have an apartment close to the school owned by a relative (although I live in Thornhill) that I can live in so I would save money.

But I used to think UW would be better academically because there would be less gaps. I guess I can start working on my hobbies again lol.

yeah and waterloo provides its students with the co-op program and i think you make at least 15K a semester.. so co-op is a bonus!

thank god we have more than one school in ontario lol.. Two!

It's actually kind of weird that you can't take any other courses in the place of those exemptions. I guess this is one of the best reasons why UofT would be switching to the PharmD program and require those courses as prerequisites... that way you do core pharmacy courses throughout 🙂

Also, would you care to share those things you heard about Waterloo pharmacy? I personally haven't heard anything negative nor positive, and as a prospective applicant I would LOVE to know what previous classes thought of the program! Thanks.

Waterloo provides coop, but I think that U of T also helps you find a job.

If you're proactive about it and don't put it off, I'm sure you can find something each summer.

can some please let me know as to HOW you can volunteer at a pharmacy!!

Thankyou

hi helloeveryone,

i dont want to seem like im bashing the school on its respective forum.. but AMONG THE MANY POSITIVES OF THE SCHOOL.. such as co-op and advanced entry courses as opposed to toronto.....
I've heard complaints such as:
- disorganized professors
- some courses too difficult .. for example my friends said they had to memorize 200 drugs within the first week of pharm studies and they were tested on it.... I know professional school should be intense but like maybe a smooth transition is needed... IMO
- co-op placements were dissapointing since alot of students who picked london, toronto etc ended up being placed in thunder bay and weird small cities (yes i know underserviced) but if you want to go back and be with your family for four months while youre working it makes it hard...
- the way they match you with your co-op (at least how they did two yrs ago.. and this might have changed...) is you rank the places and then you are interviewed with the pharmacies and they rank you among their chandidates and based on your rank and their rank you got a position.... students were VERY frustrated
- acreditation to me is very important... since there is a possibility you might not be able to write your board if the school is not accredited..

thats all i can remember from the top of my head.
Either way, overall I'm sure they are enjoying the professional school life and studies. They are involved in campus societies and have achieved a balance in social life as well as studies. They love the new building and the profs are all evry helpful and sensitive to students needs.

Alot of stuff needs to be taken into consideration when a decision is made. I have heard alot of things from friends and rumours... it's different when the decision is in your hands. I have wanted to go to u of t for a long time.. there's no hardcore reasoning behind it... just personal want lol

Im sure toronto has some negatives too.. hard to get a good gpa, big city therefore you get less direct attention from profs, more competition, etc etc.. either way we will see in june... maybe ill go to UW or Wayne instead lol... its all a mystery right now....

Best of luck to us all... and sorry for the ridiculously long post.

Wow, thanks for all that info 😀

I'm gonna elaborate more once I finish studying for my Chem exam tonight 🙂

no actually you can't fill them with upper year courses... u just have a better timetable... less school.[/QUOTE]

Hey Eyecandy, I'm sure I read that if you take an exemption at U of T, you have to fill it with another course. That course probably can't be an upper year course, but needs to be another class nontheless.

I have a degree in Kinesiology, 87% average. Plus an additional two years of University in the sciences. I needed four more prerequisites. I have been a teaching assistant for 3 classes and a research assistant. I have also worked in the healthcare field for four years. Not direct pharmacy experience, but definitely working with dispensing and administering medications. Lots of volunteer work. I had a reference letter from a medical doctor, although I didn't work for him, he has known me my entire life. Still no interview. So I change my philosophy completely and I think having the prerequisites is very important.

With regards to accreditation, I wouldn't worry too much about that. It is very unlikely that it won't get accredited. Medical, vetrinary and pharmacy schools in the Caribbeans don't have difficulty getting accreditated, so I wouldn't imagine Ontario would have any issues.

You shouldn't worry about accreditation because as mypharmacy said, a school from Ontario, especially University of Waterloo, will not have any trouble getting that done in a timely fashion.

It'll come down to which university you like the most. I'm expecting both of them to have almost identical requirements and curriculum once the PHARMD program is instigated (which should be before we graduate).

Personally, I will probably end up going to U of T because I'm a cheap bum who doesn't want to spend extra money on rent and food. That being said, I LOVE Kitchener / Waterloo; at least more than Toronto. Having gone through the Co-Op program at UW, let me tell you it is not as cool as it sounds. The Co-Op really is meant for programs such as Eng and CS. The lack of jobs in desirable areas pretty much offsets any real incentive to go through it. In addition, you (probably) won't see much of hospital experience (like a lot of you want). You will more than likely see community pharmacies out in nowhere land and possible small hospitals.

As you can see I'm not very pro-Waterloo, but it really is a good university. The Co-Op may be unpleasant at times, but it definitely beats staying home or working at Tim Hortons because the recession stopped you (1st MAYBE 2nd year Pharm student) from getting a decent pharmacy job. As I stated earlier, curriculum won't matter much at all (hopefully). So yeah... both schools are top notch and you should go to the one you have a greater affinity towards (for what ever reason i.e. clubbing, hot girls/guys, professors, building, labs, courses etc etc etc) because end of the day that will make you happy! The grass will ALWAYS seem greener on the other side of the fence.

I got an interview. My average (as noted earlier) is 79. I took the bullet in the head and did 5 of the pre-reqs this semester in order to apply this year.
