UBC class 2010-Guess what guys??---I got in

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got my email from Margaret, and I'm in! I was freaking out and too distraught to post but this is extremely relieving. I'm looking forward to meeting you all in September!

maybe the emails sent out are based on the time/day of your interview... haha. Okay... i give up on guessing! i'll just wait this out.

Now that you said she typed them out individualy, I'm really thinking that those who got in will be first, and then when she have time over, she will type out the rejection letter.

OMG-----I don't want it now. Still in denial!

i dont know if this is good news or bad news but the email stated that a reponse had to be made but july 6 (tomorrow). i can only assume all acceptance emails are being sent today. i sincerely hope i'm wrong

either way, dont give up hope and best of luck

Has anyone else heard anything? Is this really what I think it means?

Hey guys - She is still typing as you are all posting - I'm sure she still has more emails to write. Congrats to you all - this time next year its gonna be me in your seats. I cant even imagine what you guys are going through - good luck...

Okay. Just to update----I was right, I didn't get in. I guess I really messed up on the interview. But Congrads to everyone else.

How do you know that Vancouver? Did you call Margaret?

hi everyone, i just stumbled into this forum and i missed all the msging madness lol...

congrats to everyone who got in!
and i was wondering how many of you are actually out of province? skimming the msgs, i know many of you are from BC. me, i'm from T.O.

Congrats to everyone who got in, BUT! I didn't receive an email today :scared: :scared: what the heck is wrong! 😱 Did everyone else receive an email either way? Can someone post what a rejection letter says and what an acceptance letter says (you can edit your name or personal stuff out of course)? Thanks a bunch guys; maybe I will hear something tomorrow.

Hey starstrike, people that did not recieve acceptance/rejection letters are waitlisted applicants.. theres only around 10 of them I believe.. so you still have a chance of getting in if one of the accepted applicants doesn't respond to margarets email.

As for me... I didn't get in this year. I guess I didn't fit their criteria during the interview.. I'm gonna reapply agian next year for sure, but until then I'm starting up my nursing program at langara!

hey to those of you who have been admitted, can you maybe list your stats for those of us interested in ubc pharm? i'm applying for ubc pharm next year, and i've heard random things about ubc, so it'd be nice to have an idea as of what they're looking for. thanks! 🙂

1 year of university at UNBC
4.02 gpa
92 pcat
only 36 hrs of volunteer experience at hospital

good luck on your application next year

Hey,

just wanted to congradulate everyone who got in at UBC 🙂

I didn't get into UBC, but I got into UofT so I'll be heading over there in Sept.

Best of luck everyone!!

My stats:

1year UNBC Science
2years UofA Science

2.7gpa
99% PCAT
Lots of volunteer experience.

And to Jaquabeem, its nice to see another person from the North! I'm originally from Quesnel, and took classes at UNBC too. I see you've added me to your MSN so I hope we get a chance to talk and we'll definately meet in September!

Wow, congrats to all. I am still freaking out because I have received nothing yet. I have emailed the school for an update on what's happening. I also tried calling the school, but noone is picking up :scared:

ur probably on the waitlist like what FungManX said, and I'm sure Margaret's phone line and email is probalby swamped w/students' concerns or questions why they weren't admited. Give it a bit of patients. But I know its so nerve wrecking b/c you're on the borderline of being accepted and rejected. good luck.

I got in too!!!!!!!!!
i was checking my email every 15 min yesterday and I am so happy!!

my stats???
going to be my 4th year @ UBC (Microbiology.. i have to reject microbi.. someone is going to be happy to take my seat)

GPA: 77% pre-reqs... (GPA being 85 & 87 these past 2 years)
PCAT: 93
experience: work for pharmacy during grade 11, volunteered for 3 years in a hospital.

haha I set googlebar to beep when I get an email, so that I could just surf the web... but then the refresh rate of that warning was only every 5 minutes, so I ended up manually checking like mad instead 🙄

Anyways:

-1st year UBC science
-85% average
-PCAT 93%
-Grade 11 work experience at a pharmacy
-Several volunteer positions.

first year... nice...
2 words of advice for next year... for CHEM 233.
STUDY LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER STUDIED BEFORE.. 50% failing rate,
but if you need a hand i can probably dig up my notes

Regarding registration, I went with the STT C option which is Tues/Thurs for the long classes. Perhaps another SDNer will join me there?

As for me, I'm not quite digging the long days because I get really drained at the end of the day, altho they are all quite similar anyways. Btw, when is your registration time?

July 10th, 7am. I don't find the days to be long at all!! Perhaps it's because I have exemptions for Chem 233/235, Stat 203, Anat 390, and Micro 202, but my schedule actually looks bare! And those 3hr classes are only once every two weeks for some of them!

lucky, my time was originally 7 am too, but then it changed to 8:45.. boohoo... hopefully people wont register into the STT that I want.

Congrats guys, fellow Canadian here!

I'm going into my second year at MUN, I met a couple of people from UBC at PDW last year, you guys should check it out. PDW means "Professional Development Week" and basically it's a huge party for a few days in a national city, where students from all across Canada (the 9 pharm schools) get together - conferences/parties, etc.

I've got MSN if any of you have any questions about first year; different school but i'm sure a lot is similar. Just PM me for my e-mail.

Cheers, and congrats.

Hey Congrats to everyone accepted. I stumbled upon this forum about a day ago and I could taste the anxiety and fear ahaha... I found out i was accepted at around 12:45 pm... so relieved... I too was checking my email every 15 minutes...had tough decision whether to enter pharmacology or pharmacy... chose the latter...

I'm curious if anyone notices how pharmacy makes it so difficult to apply to medical school. Here's the evidence... large course load to prevent you from achieving top marks, omission of med school prerequisites such as Chem 205 (suspiciously all of the possible term 2 time slots are obstructed... note the time of Pharm 241..lol blocks the morning time for Chem 205...) Also, 2nd year = 42 credits... = no time for volunteer or research and the summer course takes up the whole day...standard timetables to force you to follow the pharmacy curriculum or risk falling behind a year... is it just me or are there sinister forces at work?

Anyways, hope everyone has a great summer and hope to see you all in fall...
ps: anyone also notice how little pharmacists get paid in Canada compared to US? and how UBC only offers Pharm D to some students? This is probably because they want their students to stay in Canada b/c only Pharm D's have a good chance in the US. Sneaky...

Hey, yeah I heard about that too, like how they changed the cirriculum a couple of years ago to make it harder for students to use pharmacy as a stepping stone to med or dentistry etc, but people still do that nowadays somehow. I am guessing all you can do is do research with pharmacy, which I think is pretty good. Also I would choose pharmacology over pharmacy too because in pharmacy, you get to study some pharmacology too and after you graduate, you can go on to do Ms/PhD in pharmacology too. However, the vice versa doesn't work, so it's really a win-win in pharmacy. And Yep, the pay sucks in Canada, but I don't plan to move to the US either, so that's not too much of a problem for me.
Anyways, see you in the fall.

I'm late but I got in at least... Just found out today I got accepted off the waitlist...

See you guys in a month and a half

Congrats to all you WL'ers and late acceptances. Look forward to seeing you in the fall and feel free to contact me if you need any info.

that's great! do you know how many people from the waitlist got in?

Wow, good to know that some UBC'ers got in off the waitlist.. hopefully its not because all of the people that rejected their offers went to the U of A! 😱

For me, pharmacy is the best choice b/c i don't want to stay in school till I'm 26 and earn my first paycheque as a doctor at 28 (optimistically...) I figure that dealing with patients as a doctor and as a pharmacist are quite similar. Furthermore, if you are after money, you'd have to be a specialist b/c many family doctors don't earn that much... 100-120 thousand a year?... first year pharmacy grad... ~80 thousand a year in US, 6 more years of fulltime pay and potential for 100-120 thousand a year if you work overtime or in a rural area... aside from the respect you get as a doctor I feel a pharmacist is a good choice... I never really cared for social status and many studies have shown that once an individual earns enough to fulfill their daily needs (40 000/yr canadian) , happiness and fulfillment are no longer dependent on income. I got accepted 3 or so weeks ago into pharmacology and pharmacy after first year and had a hella hard time deciding which one to take... i've made the right choice though... what do you guys think about being a doctor or a pharmacist?

I think you made the right decision! Are you a 2nd-year? since you've applied to pharmacology too?

soccerdude, what time was your interview? Just a shot in the dark but I'm curious..

same as u, but your gpa must be way up there if you were able to get into pharmacology.
I just found out that you can request your admission scores from Margaret. She'll send you your marks via email for each section, including your interview percentage and how you rank in the 280 interviewees. I'm sort of embarrassed to post mine as my rank just barely made it in.

i'm a bit scared to ask for my rank too.. lol.. I probably don't want to ask... we'll just pretend i did good =) In Pharmacy it doesn't matter if you get straight A's or B's or even C's... employers don't care! They just want a damn pharmacist! 👍

I don't really want to know my rank either. I'm perfectly happy pretending I did awesome too, . All I really care about is that I was accepted, even if I was at the bottom of the heap. 😛

I had mine at 3:30pm June 29th. I guess we were as far apart as possible lol. Anyways refer to this thread for my thoughts on getting our rank. I guess we're going to have to schedule an SDN meet and drink since there is so many of us going there.

Just curious, how many of you that were accepted have already attended UBC? Since I moved here from another province to get a better chance of acceptance I will know absolutely no one when we start classes. Anyone else in the same boat?

I'm from BC, but have never attended UBC. I've spent one year at UNBC and two years at UofA. If you wanted to chat to get to know somebody prior to going there, feel free to add me to MSN or email me at [email protected] . I'm usually on and chatting when I'm on night shifts at work.

It wasn't full when I registered. When was your registration time?

heh... i got in off the waitlist.... so.... yea.... haha
