Certainly =)
I applied after 2nd year with a 77.7% average and a PCAT score of 80.
Not spectacular by any means, but there is some difference between my first year marks and my 2nd year grades (ie. i've taken courses like micr 202, stat 200, currently anatomy and i have/got well over 80% in all of them).

Hope that helps:)

I received the invite as well! :)

My admission average was around 76% (not amazing first year), PCAT 98.

i got an interview, but my stats are pretty bad (actually, REALLY BAD:eek:). My GPA for only pre-pharm courses sits at 70% and I got 86 for PCAT. my low GPA will hurt me overall, so i really have to ace my interview.

my admission profile was prob the reason why i got an interview :D

Me too! I know my marks are not stellar... but I have a lot of extracurriculars.

I wouldn't consider my resume and EC as exceptional/crazy. I have 2 yrs of pharmacy-related experience as a pharm assistant, which might set me apart from others. Another thing that I did that was related to pharmacy was I job shadowed a pharmacotherapeutic specialist at VGH. I also did a bunch of other stuff related to health care such as....going on a 2-day work experience at the Children's Hospital microbi lab, and visiting the BC centre for disease control.

As for EC stuff, I volunteer at a nursing home for almost 2 yrs now and I tutor high school math. And I'm also a leader in my church's youth group and we go on camps, hikes, and do service projects.

As for what you should work on, maybe take a look at your essay again? Cause that is an important component. The essay provides insight to who you are as a person, so you want to make it as good as possible. If you say your stats are better than mine, then you're almost there (but it's still a tough road because I got rejected last yr. And with my stats, not many people get accpeted, so as i expressed before, Im not in a very good position)! HOWEVER, just improve on the other areas that I mentioned and Im sure you'll get an interview next yr.

I got an interview too, YAY!! I'm sooo excited!!!

Just checked my email and got an interview too!!! Congrats to everyone else as well :)

My stats are 80 average and 89 PCAT. I took 2 years of pre pharm courses and currently work as a pharm tech.

Hey I got home from work and the email was there. I have an interview!:D

i got an interivew!!! so excited! just came back from work and found out :D i got an interview based on a 77% GPA and 94% PCAT score and am currently working as a pharm tech.

Wow... less than three weeks to go ...!!

^ more like 2 weeks if you chose the Monday! Congrats to all.
I do wonder how many invites they sent out, because it seems improbable how I got an interview unless more people got invitations than those who did not.

Hi everyone, I got an interview too! Yay!!! Now I have to book my flight...

best of luck rosiepie, hopefully u will be one of the few out of province students that ubc decides to admit.

Wow, that's awesome! Congrats to everyone who got an interview, I wish you the best of luck with them! my lil bro got one too!.....gonna be a fun few weeks lol.

I chose wed + thurs afternoons :)

I said anytime just to make things easy. I'm turning the interview into a week long trip since I have to drive 14 hours to get there, so it doesn't matter when during the week I end up with.

I chose wed + thurs afternoons :)

me too! man, i dont know how much i should prepare for the interview. cause last yr, i think i overdid it and i sounded like a robot. And i'm not good at thinking on the spot either. yikes!

advice?

I guess the obvious trick is to find the medium between overpreperation and straight-up winging it. I do believe that overprepping is the far better of the two though...this I know from firsthand experience of trying the latter...

I was wondering that is is possible for some1 who is ranked say 300 before the interview to get accepted if they have an awesome interview? or is it pretty much impossible?

That possibility would be slim, because you would need to be expecting that about 151 people to have such a low interview score that they lose to your cumulative ranking.

The most likely way that this would be made possible is if the majority of the applicants have similar "marks" in the rankings. Such that the interview will factor greatly in your final ranking.

If I was ranked #300... I would probably use this year to brush up my interviewing skills and just go through the process to see what it's like and know what to aim for later. Realistically, jumping from #300 to #150 is a bit of a stretch, but hey, anything can happen!

When I first applied, I had no idea how competitive I would be (since I only took one term of pharmacy prereqs back then). I think we'll all be fine in the end, whether we make it or not, since we'll all gain experience at this process. :)

Good luck all though!! =D

I was just wondering how you all are going to dress for the interview? Would a business suit such as that you would wear to a job interview (business skirt/pants, collar shirt, blazer) be overdoing it?

nope, as many interview books state, you can't fail an interview by overdressing, however u may by under dressing. :D

Do u think that they will tell u where you rank in the 300 if you ask? I read that people asked after they didn't get an interview where they were ranked and were told.

u would only be told if u either do not receive an interview invitation or when u r not accepted.

Hi everyone !! I got an interview too. My stats were pretty crappy, but I was optimistic. =) I must've had good essays and references.

I was wondering about what to wear also.. first impressions are important!

Just wondering..
has anyone received an email notifying them about the specific date of their interview?

I assume that dates will be emailed today sometime

OMG! mines out and its on wednesday at 9:00! the first one!!!
I don't know if I should be happy or scared haha I better not sleep in

As you all know interview invites should be sent sometime this week, but just FYI I got my email on Wed June 4th last year... so maybe you'll get yours tomorrow

Good luck everyone!!

UBCmicrobi, do you know of people in your pharmacy class that were admitted last year with averages in the 74/75% range? I got an interview last year but didn't do so well on it. I applied again this year and got another interview invitation, but my GPA is only ~74% and my PCAT is 92%. Do you think I will have a chance at admission??

Take a look at the 2008 thread:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=505053&page=4

From the page in the link, at least one person with a similar GPA as you got in (Kridge)

Does anyone no after the interview whats the breakdown for what everytihng is worth?like gpa, pcat, interview,EC?

I actually no of him.....he apparently had amazing EC and is also the type of person who would do really good in an interview as well

lol, that was just a random name I picked 'cause he actually mentioned his stats in the 2008 thread (and got in)

But if anyone is interested you can find out the GPAs etc from some of last year's students by checking out the 2008 thread.

Good luck with interviews everyone!

Hi everyone,

Do any of you know what type of interviewing this will be? Will they be asking behavioral questions like: Tell me a time you accomplished something. Or will they be asking situation questions like: Your mom is addicted to a painkiller and asks you for them, what do you do?

I know those of you who have done the interview before are not allowed to reveal details, but just a general description would be much appreciated! Thanks so much and good luck everyone!!!

I know that people are not supposed to disclose the interview questions to their friends, but I think we all know that this rule is not very strictly followed. I, for one, have no clue what questions will be asked. How many people here actually already have a good idea what the interview questions are (either having being told by friends or having gone through the interview before)--ie., knowing over 60% of the questions? Am I at a major disadvantage if I don't know anything?

I don't know anything either :(....but i have a feeling that a lot of people do know through some sort of connection....i was also wondering if there gonna ask situation questions....i hate those lol

I can't give specifics, but during my interview I was asked the typical questions, which included behavioral and ethical questions. There aren't really any trick questions. They're straight forward and to the point; it's similar to the kind of questions you'd be asked during a formal job interview. Why do you want this job? What can you offer to the profession? What would you do if you didn't get this job etc. They'll also throw in some situational questions (behavioral) and see how you respond. The best advice I can give is to relax and tell the truth, unless it's one of those where you go "I want to become a Doctor and by becoming a pharmacist, it will really help me in becoming a better doctor". If you say that you can pack your bags and leave lol.....Don't try and memorize answers to questions (if you got a hold of previous questions) because they can easily change up the questions on you and then you'd be lost and caught off guard. Also, if you memorize answers, you'll end up sounding like a Robot. I know some of you may think that you can play it off sounding genuine, but the reality is that most can't, so don't try to. I wouldn't worry too much about the interview, do prepare for it though, but don't go overboard. Just be confident and answer the questions truthfully, they're not looking for larger than life examples or answers, so don't go in with that mindset. Anyways, I just wanted to wish you all good luck on the interviews. Go kick some @$$!

Ps. Google is your friend for sample questions.

I don't know if answering this question will violate any rules, but I'll ask just in case:
are there questions that test your knowledge of drugs (eg., drug action of common drugs, common drug names and what they are for...etc) or questions on current (health-related) events? Are there question pertaining to UBC Pharmacy specifically (should I spend time looking at the structure and background of the Pharmacy school, as I would when applying for a job at a company?)

Many thanks,

P.S. @starstrike: were you able to get a hold of the questions before you had the interview, or did you walk in blinded??

Don't worry, there definitely will NOT be questions about common drugs/mechanism of drug actions etc (you are not a pharmacy student yet, after all, so they don't expect you to know anything about drugs)**

You might get a chance to discuss current trends in healthcare/pharmacy that you are interested in or that you find exciting, and how you think these trends may advance the practice of pharmacy.

Knowing a little about UBC's Faculty of Pharm certainly wouldn't hurt.

The focus of the interview is behavioral-type questions (discuss a time when you used xyz skill...resolved a conflict....etc)

**disclaimer: there sure as hell wasn't this type of question during my interview, and I don't expect them to change formats, but use your own discretion when taking info off the internet, cause I don't want to get blamed!! :)
