So I applied to UC Berkeley for their MPH Nutrition Program in late November. I just got a letter saying due to budget cuts the program is no longer available! 😱

Did I miss a notice or something before I turned it in? Or did this really just happen between when I applied and when they reviewed my app?😕

Wow, that really is a bummer. I'm applying to the Epi/Biostat concentration. Maybe you can petition to let you into a secondary concentration since it seems unfair to take your app fee without even giving you a chance? I noticed that nutrition is still a "specialty area" on their website, but it's not listed in the "areas of concentration".

Wow they really are having a budget crisis....

Are you interested in other areas of public health?
If so, I would definitely ask to have my app forwarded to other depts, although that sucks because I'm sure your essay is tailored for that program.

They should at least refund your app fee! 🙁

I'm waiting for an email back regarding whether or not I can edit my Personal Statement if I do decide to re-route my application.

FYI - They're letting me submit a new statement of purpose, though I wonder how my LORs will look if I told my recommenders it was for a nutrition program.

I have until Feb 1 to submit new statement of purpose and new department

Good luck! Dang, that's not much of a notice. What department are you going to go for?

I'm thinking of switching to their Global Health and Environment program, since I was interested in Public Health Nutrition on a global scale (incl. policy). Their Global Health and Environment Program is an M.S. though, not an MPH.

That sounds tough. Their website says they only accept a max of 3 students per year for that program. But then only 5 applied last year.

haha i know! I'm just going to go for it though, because I've already gone through all the trouble of getting LORs, transcripts etc. I was interested in to begin with, I just didnt apply because I was going for the MPH-Nut. We'll see!

Oh, I finally understood your screenname! Nut because of nutrition, not because you're super crazy about a MPH! Hehe. 😀

Thanks Stories for that link.
It definitely gives you something to think about if you applied to Berkeley. How significantly will this effect the public health classes held this upcoming year or the research resources students and faculty will have?

Admissions has always stated that state residency is not used as part of the decision process, but I wonder if that really won't be a factor while they are having a budget crisis.
