UC Davis CO 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nyanko--I say you leaving Scrubs yesterday! I've finally seen you in person. The hair gave you away. 🙂

FWIW--I never got an email last year letting me know my app was complete, so don't stress if you haven't gotten the email. :luck:

AH! WHAT? how did i miss this! cats - you shoulda rolled up and introduced yourself "hi, i know you from the internet, and recognized you by your famous hair"... if there's one person in the world that could do that, and not be creepy, it's probably you...

Along with Phantom of P-Chemistry we have the amazing full length debut from Triskaidekaphilia Records artist WET LAB!!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm4VMBExw-E

Watch out for a live performance and new single coming to a Picnic Day near you...

Also start writin' yr lyrics and droppin' yr beatz-- we may try to have a vet school song competition at the 2011 SAVMA SYMPOSIUM, hosted by everybody's favorite vet school... U C DAVIS!

the hype is real.

OK, here goes what might be a dumb question. I kinda feel like I am finally asking why there is a pink elephant in the middle of the living room...

I grew up in CA, my uncle is a Davis DVM alumni, 90% of the vets I've ever known have gone to Davis, and 100% of the pre-vets I've ever known have wanted to go to Davis. My relatives across the country all think Davis is the top vet school in the country. And this is my question: Why? I'm not arguing that it isn't, I just want to know why everyone thinks it is all that. I know that school rankings aren't really reflective of how well the school prepares their students, so I want to know outside of those rankings what really makes Davis one of the best.

I worked with a KSU DVM alumni and he told me that Davis was over-rated, which prompted my considerations of its reputation...I'd never heard anyone say that before then.

Hey squibby,

After watching our videos, you still have to ask why we are top ranked!?!?! j/k

I can't speak for other schools, but I can tell you that the technology/facilities here are amazing. There is so much, I could spend hours describing. For example, when you attend pathology rounds, there is a high def camera that captures everything on the specimen table and projects it to a huge plasma TV. So you don't have to be right in front of the caseous necrotic lung sample to see the lesions the pathologist is talking about.

I also love how all students are required to purchase a specific laptop. The implementation of computers has really pushed me to become tech savvy. I never used e-books before, and now I'm finding I prefer the searchable scrollable e-books to the paper texts. I couldn't imagine going to vet school without my laptop. In the next decade, computers are probably going to be more important in practice/research, etc, so I feel that learning on them is a huge advantage for us.

I think I remember reading that Davis has the widest variety in tracking or special programs, as well as really great residencies. The options/choices we have during our 3rd year is amazing. My interests are sort of unusual so I will be making up my own "individual track" and choosing my own electives. This is something I probably couldn't do at other schools.

I will also point out that I absolutely love our faculty. They enjoy teaching and are passionate about their jobs as professors. It makes the environment here positive and supportive.

As for the KSU person, I wouldn't take anything he says seriously. To say that Davis is over rated without citing a specific criticism usually implies bitterness or insecurity. Of course everyone is going to be biased to the school they attended, but unless he said anything specific he disliked about Davis (other than the fact he didn't get in) the criticism is worthless to you.

This is all just my opinion, btw. PS--I think all the vet schools in this country are really good. Its kind of like comparing SPF 30 sunscreen to SPF 45. Does it really matter? Probably not. You have great protection from both...

Cool, thanks for the info. What kind of laptop do you have to buy?

I think part of the KSU-guy's argument had to do with funding issues.

We had to choose between a macbook pro or a toshiba tablet. Both computers are awesome. I absolutely love my macbook pro and couldn't imagine going to class without it. The other day, one of our professors drew something on the board and I realized I didn't even have a piece of paper or anything to write on. I did have a pen though and my neighbor let me borrow a napkin. 🙂

Cool, thanks for the info. What kind of laptop do you have to buy? I think part of the KSU-guy's argument had to do with funding issues.

Well, if you had a tablet PC... but Mac doesn't make those... :d

oh but one is in the works, and by god, the day it comes out, i will abandon my toshiba forever and jump straight into the arms of macintosh...

lol but actually having the pc is kind of convenient for school, especially if you like to hook up your computer to the podium in order to, say, project a giant image of hugh jackman onto the classroom screen, or if you want to turn your tablet screen 180 degrees around so that it can serve as a Jeopardy podium name sign....

obviously i am taking great advantage of the technology here...
but srsly it is fab- i review zoomable virtual slides for histo lab, with recorded narration by our professors, and i have miller's on my desktop, searchable with the click of a button, and i can review lectures via podcast which is something that i never thought i'd do, and don't do for every lecture, but love a LOT when i do need to use.

Just curious (because of your username) are you making a track to do with shelter medicine?

Yes I am individual track. There is only one class specific to shelter medicine, but there are many options to combine small animal medicine with infectious disease and population management.

That's awesome! I've been definitely considering shelter medicine-- but not positive yet, there's just too many options. Davis is my top choice right now so it's good to hear that someone's doing shelter med there, haha.

We've got a shelter medicine residency program here, too! 🙂

ugh as if I needed more reasons to go to davis.

also did you have pink hair when you interviewed? I've got some piercings-- all on my ears but some aren't exactly "conservative"-- and I'm wondering about admissions! I can wear my hair down and modest earrings and you can't really tell, but I'd rather lose a piercing than not get into vet school.

When I interviewed for class of 2012, my hair was my natural color. I didn't get in though, and am finishing my MS here at UCD and trying again for this cycle. 😉

If I get an interview this year I will definitely not have pink hair for it, though depending on who my interviewers end up being they may have seen me around campus with this color. Ah well...

I'd think them seeing you around beforehand would be the best of both worlds! They could see you can be professional with natural looking hair and whatnot, but know you've got some personality.

Did they give you any feedback when you didn't get in a couple years ago? Do you know how many in-state applicants they interview vs. accept?

My situation is pretty unique. I posted a thread about my post-mortem with them. Search for posts by me (in June of 2008) and read it if you want details.

For raw data, that year they interviewed about 200 in-state applicants for about 125-130 in-state offers. Roughly, of course.

LOL! Oops. This isn't facebook. I can do this:

The pink hair was moving away from me too fast . . .maybe SHE recognized ME.

I got my application complete email from UC-Davis today.

So those of you who go to school there...what is the area like? I've never even been to California and have lived my whole life in New England for the most part.

I know nothing about Davis at all - the town not the school. anyone wanna fill me in on what its like? Is it a friendly town/city? Stuff to do?

From the perspective of someone who has lived in Boston, Pittsburgh, small-town PA, small-town OH and Orlando:

Davis is great! It's a small city, but not so small that it lacks diversity. Cost of living is higher than the immediately surrounding areas (many people commute from Woodland or west Sac for cheaper living) but lower than the Bay Area. People have always been generally friendly to me, though I tend to avoid areas with high concentrations of undergrads. That's probably just because I'm old though. I don't know what your taste in "stuff to do" is, but like, in Davis itself there probably isn't too much. However, Sacramento and San Francisco are 20 minutes and an hour and a half away respectively. Within a day trip there are beaches, mountains on two sides with skiing, hiking and rock climbing, lakes...really whatever. There's a Farmer's Market twice a week, various CSA services that will deliver produce, a couple farm stands, the co-op 😍, normal grocery stores, a lot of different kinds of restaurants, and we even have a Target now!

One of my favorite parts:

I have been without a car since I moved here, which is a huge plus for me. The city prides itself on being really bike-friendly and it is. The flat land and mostly dry climate allow for bicycling and walking to be viable main modes of transportation most of the year and there are bike lanes and bike paths on or near most roads. The bus system is run by the undergraduate student association and is a bit inconvenient (reduced service) during weekends or university breaks, though there are county-run buses that hit a few points in Davis. I get around without my own car through a combination of my awesome bicycle 😍, walking, the Unitrans buses, Amtrak and zipcar (a car sharing program that has some cars on campus).

Yeah, if you got through this, I apologize for its meandering. If you have any specific questions you can ask or consult daviswiki. Take the comments there with a whole shaker of salt though; people don't usually comment unless they're complaining. 😉

I don't want to leave.

Don't forget about the rad concerts. I saw Muse in Freeborn Hall a few years back and a friend of mine saw Cake there.

My hair is sort of hard to miss, I guess!

I need to fix the roots, less than 2 weeks until I get paid so I can.... :meanie:

(for the uninformed, my hair is bright freaking pink, hah)

Hmmm... I'll have to start looking out for you at Scrubs 🙂

I've got some piercings-- all on my ears but some aren't exactly "conservative"-- and I'm wondering about admissions!

There are quite a few of us that have non-traditional [ear] piercings. Some of us took them out for interviews, others didn't. And well...we're here!

And yes - there are quite a few of us shelter-folk here at Davis. Quite a few it seems in the c/o 2013, which is awesome! 🙂

Well, if you had a tablet PC... but Mac doesn't make those... :d

I got the Mac and since I heard having a tablet was useful I got a plug-in "bamboo" tablet for those days I realized I don't have a single sheet of paper in my backpack (except for my somewhat questionable lab binder that has touched all sorts of gross liquids I wouldn't want to touch without gloves on). It works pretty well and that way I don't have to switch back to PC since I was already a Mac user.

Btw, since I haven't been on for over a month I thought I'd write an update...
DAVIS IS AMAING, our class is INCREDIBLE, I LOVE IT!!!
At the same time, it is muuuuuch more work than I ever expected, so just be mentally prepared for it. It really is amazing though (not that other schools aren't but this is all I know, and I'm VERY happy here 😍 )

nyanko -
- chihuly chandelier in our lobby
Thats what that thing is suppose to be??

Anyways I think we are all excited to see all of you guys in february for orientation! I really do love vet school. Starting out was rough due to some lab partner issues but those have been resolved. Minues a professor here and there they are all amazing in their own unique way and theres TONs of stuff to spend your bitty ounces of spare time doing. Davis is quite the town and a lot different from where I did my undergrad.

Good luck you guys! Just take it easy till February and if you have any questions Im sure theres more than enough of us who pop on here when we're suppose to be studying to answer them 🙂

Hahah yeah - there is a plaque over by the ValleyFloyd printer with details... I think the name of our chandelier is Fire & Ice. Personally I love it, but I know a lot of people think it's weird. 🙄

I highly recommend all of you who receive interview invites try to attend the Interview Workshop Day - you'll probably be able to watch it online if you can't make it, but some of us are trying to prepare a special surprise for those of you who DO show up... Plus you'll be lucky enough to meet some of the amazing '13ers in person 😎!

I agree with Starlene. Also, I went to it last year and it really helped me know what to expect for my interview. You can come see the interview rooms and meet some of the interviewers in advance. They also go through some potential types of questions to be prepared for (which I think are also on the website somewhere) and it shows added interest in the school if you can make it especially from far away.

Looking forward to meeting you guys! 😀

how far in advance of the actual interviews is the interview workshop day? I'd be coming from the east coast so flying out west twice would be a nice amount of money. Does UC-Davis make a whole day of interviews? Like tour, meet students etc? I think I remember reading somewhere they do not. Would we get tours on the interview workshop days? I've never even been to CA before so I'd like to learn as much about the area/school as possible...if I get an invite.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe my recollection is that the interivew workshop is on a Saturday and interviews start on the Monday. The interview invites are sent out a few weeks in advance, I believe. (I got my invite on February 11th, the workshop was the 21st and interviews started on the 23). If you schedule things nicely, you can do only one trip if you schedule your interview at the beginning of the first week. And yes, you get to pick the date and time of your interview...but the longer you wait to call and schedule, the fewer options you have.

The workshop consisted of a panel of current first years that talk to you about the school and the interview, etc...and you can ask whatever questions you might have. Lunch is provided and in the afternoon there was a financial aid talk along with a tour of the facilities. Things might be different this year, but that's how it was for us.

Your interview will be just an interview - no more than 30 minutes (arrive ahead of time to check in with your ID and get photographed) but I believe you can schedule a tour if you want, you'd just have to ask about it.

Sounds about right to me. The only hard part about picking your own day is that the interview offers didn't all go out on the same day (I think to prevent having all ~200 people from calling at once at 9am that Monday morning), and even so, I was trying to call for a couple hours before I reached them. I came from the East Coast for mine and I ended up having to come out twice which was more expensive, but at the same time it gave me the week or two in between to think about and research the school. Also, SDNers tend to write about their interviews and it really made me feel more comfortable going into the interview to hear what to expect from somebody in my shoes. :luck:

Personally, I was not able to attend the workshop due to a time conflict with an interview at another school. I was able to schedule a tour on the same day as my interview and met with a current first year to follow her around to classes. While the tour was a general tour for any visitor to UCD VMTH, it was nice to see all the facilities. Don't expect to ask your tour guide a lot about vet med though (mine was an undergrad Animal Science student). If you can't do the workshop, definitely get a student host for your visit! Mine was fantastic and really gave me a lot of insight on the classes and issues for UCD first years. 🙂

P.S. Everybody get off SDN and study for finals! 😉

I just got my email from Davis saying my application was incomplete. 3 out of 4 schools so far have told me I was incomplete because one of my transcripts was sent under my maiden name. Hopefully they can find it tomorrow when I call them.

That's frustrating. There's a good reason right there to toss out the old convention of name changing. 🙂

BTW, can't believe they are still sorting through our materials. How are other schools taking care of business so quickly, but not Davis?

It sounds like some of Davis's admin stuff is historically slow. It's bad, because I REALLY want to go to Davis, but my brain has started reading UC Davis as "Oopsie Davis" instead of "Yoo See Davis". Going off to reprogram now. . .

Definitely keep your patience for this school. Basically, you'll hear from every other school... wait a few more days... then you'll hear from UC Davis. I applied to 13 schools and UCD was the very last one I heard from (besides wait lists). I think it makes it all the sweeter 😉

ColoGirl, I hope they figure your info out soon! 🙁 I have two first names so I was constantly going through documents verifying that I wrote them in the correct order (I go by the second of my first names...which is incredibly confusing as a child). At least you have the legal documents saying your name was X and now is Y. 🙂

Davis is, in fact, reviewing our applications! I got an email today saying they were missing my GRE scores, although I know I sent it to them when I first took the test...another $20 down the pot. Oh well. At least I know they got everything else.

"While we are sure you have already requested this documentation be sent to us, we have not received it and ask that you request it again. We must receive this/these document(s) by December 30, 2009, to consider your application for fall admission 2010."

So if you don't hear from them, I guess your application is probably complete.

And since I know you all are gonna need the dets, I'm an in-state student applying for the DVM program. None of that PhD stuff for me (not yet, anyway).

I received an email confirmation that my application was complete a couple of weeks ago and am OOS. The suspense is killing me and the schools to which I applied wont be sending out rejections/interview invites for at least another month!!!!

Still got no app complete email. Two years ago when I called them somebody told me they weren't sending them out even though I saw people getting emails on here. I ended up getting one around this time that year because they didn't have GRE scores from one of my tests so I had to have it by Dec 30 then too. I don't know what their deal is sometimes. 🙄

Yeah, I got an e-mail in mid-November from them when one of my transcripts didn't make it to their office. They gave me until November 30th to get another copy to them. Unfortunately, it was an international transcript and I was freaking out because I knew the mail from this country was EXTREMELY slow. I called them in a panic, but they were very nice and told me I would still be considered as long as they had on file that the transcript was on its way 🙂. I got an e-mail for a complete app a week later.

My guess is that they go through missing stuff in rounds or something. Maybe they contact missing trancript people first and then missing GRE scores next. It must be a mail thing....

They were missing an international transcript from me and requested it by nov 30th as well.

Just a heads up if anyone else applied to the VSTP (DVM/PhD) and are wondering why you haven't gotten an application complete email.

I called today because I still hadn't gotten one and it's getting late, and Yasmin said that Dr. Tablin (the VSTP director) picked up the VSTP files already and since the file was not in the office, it wasn't in the "verification email" stack. She verified for me that it was complete, though.

Also, the woman who answered the phone was very helpful and said that they are still in the process of verifying the DVM apps so if you haven't gotten one yet hang tight.

This means that they're reviewing the VSTP apps already.

.........

:scared: :barf:

Why is UCD sooo slow????

I'm actually kinda glad they are so slow because they are the only school I applied to that will see my good fall quarter grades, and I needed them to help prove myself.

February does seem awfully far off, and those of us who don't get interviews will wait even longer for our rejections!

I'm just thinking, "come on, I want to know where my life is going already!"

Holy cow, I wanna know already, just tell me! The whole "patience is virtue" thing is totally overrated 😛

Hi, I'm new here and had a couple questions since a few of you seem to have a lot more insight into this process and UC Davis than I do 🙂

Have they published a timeline yet? I have a southwest free flight that expires March 4th, and I'm wondering whether to use it now, or hold on to it for a potential UC Davis interview if they're before March...(I'm in Fl, so it's the furthest school and hence most expensive plane ticket).

Anyone know any of their out of state applicant stats? Like how many apply, how many they accept? I couldn't find that anywhere I looked.

Every time I see an update on the UCDavis thread, I get excited...thinking someone actually got an interview invite already...wishful thinking. In the Vet Med admission requirements book, I saw that in 2007-2008, there were 490 nonresident applicants and five were accepted.:scared: This link may help, but I don't see any academic stats exclusively for OOSers...BTW I am also from Florida and hopefully will be buying that plane ticket to CA soon!!!!
