UC Davis!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, they cause a lot of stress and misery with trickling out the emails...

Davis is notoriuos about trickling out the rejections to the IS folks. Basically, most every year, they have set times for their interviews (like over a week or so) and if you do not get your interview, you will likely get rejected. I was one of those who's rejection letter did not come until almost April....and that was BOTH years I applied😳

by their deadline, follow up.

I was in the same position as many of you this time last year. I called several times, and repeatedly got the standard 'we're done sending out interview invites, rejections will go out by snail mail the first week of April' response. Come April, I still hadn't heard. I guess they overlooked me. I was assured that my file had been fairly reviewed, but then I still had to ask for my evaluation of how I stacked up against other applicants (this came with the rejections last year). There was no record of it in my file. When it arrived, it still didn't contain a formal rejection. So I had to call and ask them to send me a formal rejection letter 👎

It sounds this year like they're interviewing for a longer stretch of time. In the invite they said interviews will run from Feb 25 to March 18.

right when I said "over a week or so" I meant at leat one week usually longer. Good example of why I sucked at verbal GRE (the reason I was told I was rejected the first time for Davis) and when I retook and scored lower in only the verbal section the second rejection from them was not a surprise...

ps.. I only speak for In State applicants (I was a CA resident all through life, except now for residency....)

I spoke with someone who has helped review applications during previous years. She said that the interview invites were sent out all at once. A few alternate applications are kept for the unlikely event that a large portion of interviews do not go well.

Last year I received a letter in April, AFTER I had to ask for it, so I guess the rejection EMAIL I received this afternoon is an improvement. How nice, they put it in pdf format and everything! +pissed+

Forgive the sarcasm, its been a long week. I hope for those of you who did not get an email its because you are still being considered! Good luck~

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh so that's why I got stuck in the reject them at last possible minute.......in case they had bad interviewees:laugh:

Well guess it was all for the best, I think I did fine without those interviews😉

Anyways goodluck to all who are interviewing:luck:
Davis is an awesome school (I actually ended up as an extern at the primate center in my fourth year and loved it)😱 ironic huh...

does anyone know of anyone who got an interview after the initial batch of invitations for interviews in the past? i have to yet to receive a rejection or invitation.......im assuming im in some sort of limbo?

also, i have to take one more gchem lab.....do you know if i dont take it, and i get accepted...would they really care? my friend in medical school said they dont really check up on that. but hey, thats med school.

There's another thread where someone asked a similar question and the answer seems to be yes they will check on it and they will not allow you to matriculate if you don't finish it.

I'm fairly sure most of the schools are fairly strict on that. When I went to my Western interview, they made sure to emphasize that last year when they were going down the waitlist to offer seats, they had to reject a good amount of people who basically said, "ohh... I didn't end up taking the class because I thought I wouldn't be accepted since I was on the waitlist.."

That was just Western... but I'm pretty sure most of the other schools would do the same.. but I don't know for sure. I'd contact the school for an absolute answer! But I wouldn't take any chances if it were me...

In general they really care. There are so many qualified applicants, that they'd probably pass right over you, if you didn't finish the pre-reqs.

I (finally) got my official rejection letter by email!! See y'all & thanks for playing!🙁

got my rejection letter this morning also. Makes my decision easy i guess. Kansas here i come

Im OOS.....havent heard anything.....lil bit annoying

got my rejection today via email... was expecting it... but it still stings a little! Poo!!

i think they are stringing applicants along knowingly and that sucks.
Unfortunately I think it may be a what-goes-around-comes-around kind of thing... Davis doesn't interview a huge excess of people (if you get an interview your chances of being accepted are better than 50%). But there are students who are offered interviews and wait until the very last minute to decline (or even worse, schedule an interview then back out just beforehand). Then again, if you're that student with an interview invite to a school that's not at the top of your list, you're likely to feel that you have all the right in the world to take your sweet time deciding whether or not to go.

Anyway, if they sent out rejections right away to everyone who didn't make the initial cut for interviews, and a handful of people backed out, then they'd have to go back and un-reject some people... So yeah, instead of that I think they hold a number of rejections until they're sure all the interview slots are filled.

I'm not saying it doesn't suck, though.

i got my rejection via email + pdf in the mail yesterday too.

looks like im flying cross country to move to ohio!

I got my rejection letter this Wed morning. sigh..... 🙁 so the end for me this yr. I guess I'm applying again.

Does anyone know if we can call Davis right now to find out where to improve on the application?

They probably won't tell you right now, but you might be able to schedule a date - when I called after my rejection last year they scheduled my phone meeting for early May. I suppose the admissions department stays busy for a while with the incoming class and whatnot.

Well??? How was the interviewee workshop/orientation? I'm jealous I didn't get to go 😡

:luck::luck::luck::luck: to interviewees!

It was pretty good. The current students seemed relaxed and really willing to help us and answer questions and everyone who spoke to us was encouraging and friendly. I'm glad I went! 🙂

I too was glad I went to the workshop, though after the initial interview talks it mostly seemed like a sales pitch for the school. It made me really excited about going to Davis, but on the other hand, if I end up being rejected it will be that much more of a letdown. Even though I had heard most of the interview stuff before from various sources, it was reassuring to hear it all again.

I'm so glad I went! I'm too tired now to post any more, but I just wanted to say YAY Davis! 🙂

Also, did anyone get a whole slew of example interview questions from Kim O'Bryan in an email today or in the last few days? My email is stinking and I didn't get it yet. My interview is Monday, and at the rate my email is going, I'll get the example questions on Tuesday. Could someone either post the sample questions or PM them to me? I'd be eternally grateful!

Thanks!!

the third link down on the first page refers you to interview information. then scroll down to see the questions. the same information is on their website.

Yea, I saw those. But at the interview workshop yesterday some people mentioned that Kim O'Bryan sent out another email with 80-some sample interview questions in it. That's what I was hoping someone could post as I haven't received that. Did she actually send that out or were people just confused about the number of sample interview questions? Were they really just referring to this list?

Thanks.

I also heard people mention an email with sample interview questions going out on Friday, but I haven't received anything either.

Good luck to all of you with interviews tomorrow!!

If those of you who didn't receive the interview questions PM me your email, I have a PDF of interview questions and I'd be happy to email it to you.

Good luck on your interviews! Don't stress too much (haha, I know, I was in your shoes last year!), but the interviewers want you to succeed 🙂

So...as OOS if i havent heard anything the two possibilities are:
1- Im an alternate if someone turns out to suck
2- They completely forgot to even send me a letter of rejection
?????
Any others?

Good luck tomorrow, nyanko (and to everyone else interviewing soon)! :luck:
It went better than last year, but for me that's not saying much since I tanked last year.

Kinkajou, definitely give admissions a call. They should have sent out everything to everyone by now, whether they are interview invitations or rejections.

For those who have had interviews this week, how did they go?? Were the interviewers scary or were they nice/laid-back?

I'm so nervous, I've got mine on the 11th 😱

I hope the interviews went well, and good luck to everyone! 🙂

Mine wasn't bad - all of my stress was purely self-induced. My 3 interviewers were all very nice and actually let me finish my answers before asking another question.

Good luck and try to relax (yeah, right!) :luck:

I had kind of a range of folks. I thought they all asked some kind of tough questions (tougher than my other interviews but not as tough as I expected) and mostly it all related to my experiences in one way or another. But the lady was really responsive and seemed to like what I was saying. One guy was kind of neutral, and the other guy seemed to be really focused on asking me questions to see whether I knew stuff. Not off the wall, just definitely seemed to have more of a quizzing air about him than any other interviewer I've encountered. He also seemed a tad bored with me at times, looking off in another direction. But I just tried not to worry about him. Pupsforseeing had a similar impression of this guy, so oh well.

I haven't posted feedback yet, but I will soon. 🙂

I will just echo what Sheltergirl and VAgirl have already said. My UC Davis interview was pretty laid back and friendly. There was one interviewer who was harder to impress than the others. He seemed really skeptical of me, my application, and my answers (asking me to define things in my application, quizzing me on security clearances I had to obtain to do something, etc...as if I had made up what I wrote on my app or something). He also asked me what two major astrological events (his words, not mine) had occurred over the last week. Yeah, random. But, he was still pretty nice. The other two guys were really friendly and it seemed they just wanted to chat a little and find out where I've been and where I'm heading. We talked about everything from the retired guide dog one of them adopted to Master's swimming opportunities at Davis to my experiences with intramural football (apparently that day they had interviewed 3 kickboxers, a sharpshooter, and now a football player!). Unexpectedly, I didn't get any ethical questions.

My experience was pretty in line with the others. I got the astrological event question as well, and when I kept answering the subquestions he kept pressing until I couldn't answer, but then after that he just said "I wanted to see how much you would answer before you didn't know" or something like that. They picked some really random things out of my application to ask about, like pupsforseeing.

Overall it felt pretty conversational and I walked out feeling good. But then of course two hours after I got home it was all, "Oh man my answers were stupid I could have said better things they're never going to let me in!" But I don't think that's a function of the interviewers, they were mostly smiling and laughing the whole time.

Ok, maybe it's just me, but were they talking about astrology here, or astronomy? Because...the first one just seems so whacky to talk about in an interview...

The second. Sorry, brain freezing. 🙂

Haha, ok, thanks. I was trying to imagine how one would respond to that... "So, I'm a leo, and my horoscope said that Mars would be moving into my fifth house this month, so I can expect a lot of tumult, so that's one major event..."😛

I like Chinese astrology better than western. I'm a MONKEY! 🙂

hey congrats hoodle! i interviewed the same day as you for the vstp program. i haven't heard, so i figure that's a no. but anywho, congratulations and have fun!

What do you look like? And... drummm rolll...... how do you know who I am?! (scary music.......)

maybe this should be a pm.

haha i'm not certain, but seeing as there were only a few of us there on the 12th... also, the turtle in your pic gives a little hint 😉

Yeah...that same interviewer also said "Astrological" to me instead of "Astronomical", which then got him a 😕 face. At least they asked me another question after that so I didn't end on that note...

In my case, he definitely said "astrological." I asked him to clarify and he repeated "astrological events." That TOTALLY threw me off! I responded that I didn't follow astrology so I didn't know...and then when he named them I realized that he meant ASTRONOMY not ASTROLOGY! Yeah, I felt dumb. Oh well. This is from the girl who just found out what sign I was a couple months ago 🙂

Yeah I was pretty sure he said "astrological" as well, and then I was like "I'm sure he means astronomy so I'm just gonna go with it."

OO, so I looked at other posts by you Biobean, and Mississippi DVM/PhD! I know who you are, and congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you going to go there, do oyu think?
