As a UC undergraduate, it seems difficult to find summer internships/research programs at other universities because of the time frames. For those that are not in a UC, the quarter system makes it so that the end of the school year comes around mid-June. The problem here lies in the fact that many summer internships/research programs start around May.

Has any UC undergraduate found great opportunities over the summer that starts around late June or early July? Or have you just volunteered at local hospitals or whatnot? If anyone that's not in a UC has any advice, it would be much appreciated.

I graduated from a UC. There are great opportunities, both in research and volunteering internships for students, i would imagine there are opportunites at your school as well if you seek them out. Which UC do you attend?

I hope that this is not too off topic, but I'm a senior in high school and I am curious which UC has the most available/best research and EC opportunities.

UCLA

There are a lot of opportunities for research and summer programs as well. What I'm asking though is for any research opportunities outside of UCLA. Universities such as U Chicago or Johns Hopkins have theirs in May.

You just have to find those that match your schedule. Also you can do something at your own school if you don't get lucky. Be aware that you need to look for outside-school opportunities far in advance. For this summer is too late for many great program.

Interesting, I think it would help if you looked into potential research positions hosted by your university. Here at my school there are around 3 research programs for students. Since these program are created by the school they follow our particular time frame.

As mentioned above, there are, but these need to be sought out and applied to far in advance. I did not participate in any programs outside of my university so I don't know too much about these types of programs.

Do you only want it to be at another major university? A lot of major research hospitals in LA (like Cedars-Sinai, City of Hope) have research programs you can enter into by just emailing someone in their student affairs departments. Also, I know many students who perform research at CalTech, which follows a trimester system (I believe) that may be similar to the UCs.

Because the UC's are such a monster in the field of research, there are tons of labs on campus. My lab actually encourages students to do research over the summer full time. Not only do you learn more, you also are more productive to the lab, which could result in potential presentations and publications in the future.

Try finding a lab during the year and asking if they will pay you to work during the summer.

I ran into that same issue when applying for summer research internships for this year. Darn quarters! Luckily I'm already doing research on campus and can keep doing my project over the summer. I would look for research opportunities on campus, since I bet a good deal of students leave for the summer and labs are always looking for cheap labor. 😉

Most UC's seem to have ample research opportunities for undergrads so start talking to professors whose research you find interesting.

(Sorry for any typos. On my phone...)
