UCSF Application 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know exactly how you feel! I was confident going to the interview and then after I walked out, I was thinking, "What happened?" My interviewer even asked me what I would do if I did not get in, so I was thinking, "Are you trying to hinting something?" 🙁

Waiting for the letter is driving me nuts!! 😱

Don't worry about it.. it's a pretty standard question to ask in interviews, maybe to see how determined you are to pursue pharmacy or if you're prepared for the worst case. It doesn't mean they think you're not going to get in this round.
I hate waiting, too. I think it's the worst part. The interview keeps popping up in my head every day and I keep wishing I could have answered some questions better, even though I was in a good mood after the interview.
I actually had a dream last night that I got waitlisted at UCSF.. I hope that doesn't actually happen 😡

Seriously guys, take good care of yourself and your health and don't drive yourself nuts. I remember I was getting white hairs like everyday last year and lost over 10 lbs from all the stress. 🙁

The letters will come when they come and at this point woryring about is just pointless since everything is out of your hands.

Don't worry about it at this point, it seems everyone in my class had drastically different interview experiences. My interview was very nice, but definitely strictly formal going by the format. Others had very informal interviews - one of my friends danced for an interviewer, another walked away with a business. Another guy was quizzed on his organic chemistry during the interivew. So, it's quite a variety of experiences and don't feel bad if your interview went very formally.

Hi Cheburashka...thanks for keeping us informed. I just have a quick question regarding the interview this Friday. They actually quiz you on science stuff? How specific since I have been out of school for quite some time. I guess I can only be honest instead of lying my way around.

I wish that was my case, but I eat when I'm stressed. 🙁

They most likely won't quiz you - they don't quiz anyone routinely, it's not a scheduled part of the interview. This was just a special story I shared about a couple people in my class that got quized. One guy was asked what was his least favorite subject - he said chemistry and got quized on it. 🙂

Hehehe, then keep little baby carrots ready when you are having the chums. My friend dones't buy ice cream on certain weeks when she knows she'll be stressed.

You'll be bound to gain weight at this school anyway - there is soooo much free food during seminars and lunch talks that you are bound to eat it in desperate attempt to save some money on groceries ---- > tasty but not the healthiest kind 😡

Binge eat on celery. You won't gain a pound haha

Funny how this came up as a topic in this thread... the entire lecture today in Psych was on eating disorders and motivations for eating

Hi Kmoogs, Thank you for pointing out the other forum was out of date. What date did you have your interview? How did it go?

This Friday as in 3 days from today 😕 But I'm in the 11:30 group

 Midterms done this week (until another one on Monday haha)! Time for UCSF :woot:

Good luck, everyone! Can't wait to meet some of you this Friday afternoon. Make sure to take the tour!

Hi, Kogekao, when did you have your interview?

I had my interview on 2/6 too! Did you have it in the morning or afternoon? Mine was in the morning and super long. I was starving by the time it was done around 2 pm. 😛

Hi, Cheburashka. I am just wondering, is the acceptance letter in a big package or just a regular size mail?

Kmoogs is right, they come in regular sized envelopes. You don't get the school package untill much later after your acceptance, at least a month from what I remember.

Mine was on 2/06 in the morning.

That's cool! I might have seen you then. Which group were you in? I think i was in the green and i had my interview last.

I have my interview tomorrow!
I'm flying in tomorrow morning and taking public trans in. I found a website, transit511.org, that gives you directions to get around with Muni and BART. I found that I can buy a day pass for the Muni, but I can't find info about tickets for the BART. Are there day passes, or is it expensive per ride on it?

They are per ride, per length of the ride - so the more stops you go on the train, the more expensive the ticket is.

They are usually sold at bart stations from these goofy looking dispensing machines. 🙂

A day pass for the MUNI costs like $11....which is not really worth it if you're only going to need it twice for the entire day (each ride for up to 90 minutes transfer is $2...so if you take it to and from the BART station, it'll only be $4 total) unless you plan on sight seeing all day or something. There are no day passes for the BART because they charge different prices depending on the distance you travel and what station you get off of. From SFO, the total is about $10 on both BART and MUNI...so about $20 round trip.

thanks!
dang, that is alot more reasonable then I though it'd be

Wow, it's almost Friday again? Good luck to everyone tomorrow. 🙂

😀 Sitting around the airport 👍

Same here. My flght is delayed for an hour already...not sure when should I stop waiting but drive up instead... Go away clouds in SF please....

Awe, it's not a good weather here today at all. I woke up to find my window completely fogged up in a fairy-tale like pattern.

On the plus side, P1s are done with our round of 5 exams and free like birds, finally !:banana::zip:

Good luck to everyone interviewing tomorrow ! Any last minute questions - pm me.

Ahh should have brought my scarf.... feels so cold in SF 😳 My ears are tingly

I heard it will rain tomorrow...don't forget to bring an umbrella. Good luck to us and everyone else who is interviewing tomorrow.

Yesterday was fun, but I hope I didn't blow my interview by being so nervous!!! Everyone was so nice, great meeting everyone who was there. Good luck 😳)

Hi Socalgirlie! Which one were you last Friday? What group were you in?

Hey, what is a 1099 tax form? At the interview, they told us we should complete financial aid applications asap even though we do not know if we got accepted. After completing my app on collegeboard, it asked for 1099, but i don't even have that. i'm wondering if i made a mistake on one of the questions. (not talking about fafsa).

I've heard of students with 1098's but not 1099. Are you self-employed?

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1099msc.pdf 1099 form?

Variants for Form 1099
As of 2008, several versions of Form 1099 are used, depending on the nature of the income transaction:
1099-A: acquisition or Abandonment of Secured Property
1099-B: Proceeds from Broker and Barter Exchange Transactions
1099-C: Cancellation of Debt
1099-CAP: Changes in Corporate Control and Capital Structure
1099-DIV: Dividends and Distributions
1099-G: Government Payments
1099-H: Health Insurance Advance Payments
1099-INT: Interest Income
1099-LTC: Long Term Care Benefits
1099-MISC: Miscellaneous Income
1099-OID: Original Issue Discount
1099-PATR: Taxable Distributions Received From Cooperatives
1099-Q: Payment from Qualified Education Programs
1099-R: Distributions from Pensions, Annuities, Retirement Plans, IRAs, or Insurance Contracts
1099-S: Proceeds from Real Estate Transactions
1099-SA: Distributions From an HSA, Archer MSA, or Medicare Advantage MSA
1042-S: Foreign Person's U.S. Source Income
SSA-1099: Social Security Benefit Statement
SSA-1042S: Social Security Benefit Statement to Nonresident Aliens
RRB-1099: Payments by the Railroad Retirement Board
RRB-1099R: Pension and Annuity Income by the Railroad Retirement Board
RRB-1042S: Payments by the Railroad Retirement Board to Nonresident Aliens
W-2G: Certain Gambling Winnings

Unless you have one of those, maybe you goofed on one of the questions? I'm probably going to fill it out on ~Tuesday once I get my tax forms together.

I guess they're all done with interviews now. I hope everyone did well! 🙂 Everyday after my interview, I am so anxious about getting a response from them. I am hoping it's good news, it's definitely my first choice but my interview was so nerve-wrecking. Let's hope for the best. Sometimes I have weird nightmares about getting rejected or dreams about receiving that acceptance letter. The wait is the hardest thing...
👍

Whatever happens happens. Good luck everyone! :xf:

Carl St. & Hillway Ave is the stop before Irving & Arguello Blvd. I would recommend going to Irving & Arguello so you can use the elevator to get to Parnassus. Otherwise, you'll be stuck walking up a giant hill of sorts and you don't want to be out of breath and sweating while going to your interview. The Carl St. & Hillway Ave stop might be hard to spot also. It'd be easier to look for the UCSF parking structure as they will have signs (if you're coming from downtown, the parking structure will be on your left side).

Thank you thank you thank you for this advice! 👍

It's a little late but I saw the hill for the first time today

so i was a little shaken during my interview at the very end..

i asked my interviewers for their business card, and they said they didn't have any. and then i asked the interviewers if i can have their contact information, but they said it was unavailable at the time.. so i don't really know how to feel about that since i really wanted to send them a thank you note of some sort.

=/

Well if you were asking the faculty, you can probably look them up on the UCSF website. It should have their picture and email address, I believe. I don't know how you'll find out the student's information. Hmm, I wonder why they didn't want to give you their contact information.

thanx kmoogs. i don't think i fall under any of those 1099 categories. i do have my w2 but that's not what they are looking for. i'm gonna call collegeboard again next week. they're pretty busy, and i called last week and they made me wait for like 30 mins and hung up on me. haha

oh and make sure you don't make mistake filling out the apps, bc collegeboard doesn't let people make revisions. they said any revision has to go to the school directly, it's not the same like fafsa.

Maybe collegboard made a typo haha. I think 1098 has to do with student loans or some sort of school related thing... I vaguely remeber having a 1098-t or something like that last year

But remember they specifically mentioned not to overanalyze things. Plus, I don't think a thank you letter is absolutely necessary as long as you were genuine and did your best at the interview. My interviewers were extremely nice and gave me their contact information. I showed them I was very thankful in the end and I feel that a thank you letter will only be redundant. I know in business thank you letters can make a difference but in the academia their selection process is much much more elaborate. Hope this makes you feel better. But this is just me, what are other people's take on thank you notes?

just had my interview yesterday. It went so bad because my faculty member asked me so many situational questions that I was so stuck on. I wish I can have a second shot to make it up. Sigh, but I guess that would never happen, therefore I'm screwed.

I was interviewed yesterday too maybe I saw you!! I really liked my interviewers although the questions were definitely challenging. But don't overanalyze things!
