UF c/o 2014... It Begins!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I also had my interview yesterday (Friday 4/16) in Gainesville and within an hour and a half from leaving the building I had an email from Penny saying:

This is notification of your Conditional Admission to the University of Florida, College of Pharmacy for Fall 2010. We will send you an official Conditional Admission letter via email by Friday, April 23, 2010. We look forward to welcoming you to the Class of 2014. Thank you.

So did everyone else who got an "official" acceptance letter get this "unofficial" one before? I was surprised when they said it would take days to hear back...but hours was pretty shocking.

Congrats to all the acceptances! 😀
I got the exact same message from Penny.
Congratulations to all my future classmates!!

I am sure there are plenty of others. What are your stats?

Remember, interviews continue until June!

82% PCAT, 3.2 overall undergrad GPA, 3.35 science GPA, 4.0 graduate GPA and I'll have my masters in drug chemistry FROM UF at the end of this summer, lol. My other requirements (recommendations, extracurricular, and charity) are top notch. Does it look like the adcom will make it to that this year?

Did anyone get a 4 or a 5 on the writing section of the PCAT? Either the Conventions of Language, or the Problem Solving? I got a 2.5 and a 3.0 which I thought are pretty embarassing for a native English Speaker.

Actually, did anyone get a 3.5 or better? They are graded by 2 people with a score of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. If one grader gives a 3 and one grader gives a 4 then you receive a 3.5 if the graders disagree by 2 points or more, then it goes to further graders to see why there is such a big discrepency.

It's funny you should ask this...I can't seem to find my last PCAT scorecard at the moment, but I'm pretty sure both times I took the test my essays were 3.0, and no one I knew had gotten higher either. I'd be interested to hear!

Sounds great to me. I especially like the Masters in Drug Chemistry from UF...with a 4.0 GPA...that must have been a lot of work. I can't imagine that you wouldn't get in. I think you should call UFCOP and ask them if your application is complete. (352)273-6312

All I can think is that your application was missing something???

No, unfortunately not. I finished my app back in November, and emailed Penny then. I also asked her for a status update a month ago and she said they were still evaluating. The reason why I did that (and mentioned in the email I was a masters student at UF) is because when I went to Gainesville to have my transcripts evaluated, the gal that talked to me said there were two of their own masters students (performing stellar) that almost got overlooked the year prior because their academic history from years ago made them look like a 'flight risk'. How does that happen, exactly?

not sure if its true but I heard that some schools hesitate to accept over qualified students because of fear that if they accept them, the student will opt to go to a better school. This apparently drops their "ranking" (#accepted/#enroll ratio) and schools that really care about ranking do weird things like that. This is probably false and in no way have I ever heard of uf doin anything like that but its just something I read before.

Thanks, Rx, and I've heard that too. Unfortunately, I may have a lot more 'fluff' than most, but I'm not overqualified, and not near as qualified as some of you who have performed superior all along the way--kudos! I've made mistakes, albeit 20 years ago, so It's very possible they are waiting to see how well I do after a full load this semester.

Ya I know what you mean. I would think you are a little more qualified with your training in drug chem tho, but your right.. most likely they are waiting to see your final transcript. Anyways good luck! Im rootin' for ya :xf:

I like your line of reasoning, however, UF is ranked tied for 9th for pharmacy school rankings. I was just accepted to St. Pete campus, have a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and have over 10 years of biochemical research....can't get much more qualified than that......

The admissions committee decisions are such a mystery to everybody involved (including me).....

True.. mystery is a perfect description of UF's admission process.

I was at the AT&T store today talking to them about changing our home services, and though their view on what is going on with iPhone is slightly bias, I did want to share what I found out. He stated that Verizon would not be getting the iPhone in the near future (next few years). He said that Verizon was in talks with Apple but they (Verizon) wanted something Apple was not will to give, which was a portion of what was made off the Apps downloaded by their iPhone customers. With AT&T they do not get a portion of those Apps, and Apple wants to keep that major revenue source to themselves (who buys an iPhone and doesn't download apps?).

How true this all is, well I have no clue. Being that it came from an AT&T guy, I can't say with 100% certainty that this is all there is to know. However, it is something to ponder. He did say that the new phones going into production by Apple were again for AT&T.

Just thought I would share sincce this has been a topic for discussion!

Both Apple and Verizon are being ridiculous....they both would make gobs of money if the iPhone was sold by Verizon.....I know that I would buy one and many Verizon customers would as well.....I would rather use a different phone than switch to AT&T just to get the iPhone......

Yep, I can't believe they didn't snatch up right away! Haha, maybe in your case they would worry about you going elsewhere!

I got my conditional letter of admission as well about an hour after my interview!!!!! I nearly wrecked my car on I-75 after I realized it wasn't a joke 🙂 so so so excited! I guess I'm going to have to put my FSU stuff aside and stock up on some orange and blue!!!! Good luck to everyone else still waiting.

Or you could just rock both 😉

PLEASE do that as soon as possible. Thanks. 👍

Hey hey heyyy... I would never flip flop on my alma mater (but then again that's probably why UF won't give me an interview lol jk)

I have not heard of anyone scoring higher than a 3 either! I have always wondered about this, but I just never asked because I figured that there were simply better writers out there than myself who haven't shared their scores. Now that I think of it though, as much as I am not a fan of writing, I have always been consistently praised by my undergrad and MBA professors for my papers (not sure why, but maybe I just tried hard on those?) I scored a 36 on the ACT English section, and I scored high on the PCAT reading and verbal as well, so I have no clue why none of us seem to be able to crack higher than a 3.

I got 3's both times, despite the fact the second time I took it I was quite sure I had knocked it out of the park.

I haven't met anyone to get higher than a 3 in writing either!

This would make an interesting topic for the whole board to see if ANYONE got higher than 3.

I didn't interview at UF, but I wore a skirt suit with no hose. Is that bad? lol It was also 45 degrees outside so I guess heat wasn't an excuse. I brought a pant suit on the plane and ended up getting a skirt suit the night before at the mall so I didn't have hose. 😕
Did you get an interview with UF?

Yeah but you're a Cane... There's a big difference between a Cane and 'Nole (hope I didn't just put my foot in my mouth).

I will always be a FSU fan no matter what school I go to 🙂 But i am very happy to be attending UF

Alright, alright... that's understandable. Did you get accepted to the Gainesville campus?

LOL, unless you're already orange and blue and they cut you off before you can become even more ORANGE and BLUE!

Yes, UF knows that too much orange&blue runnin' through the veins can be a bad thing....

I know that guy!!!

Yep! I went to high school in Gainesville so I will be glad to be back home.

That's cool. What high school did you go to? I went to UF for four years and somewhat upset that I didn't get Gainesville campus since it was my first choice... but I guess a change of scenery wouldn't hurt.

Are you going to have to relocate since you already live in Tampa? That would be one plus to going to the St Pete campus.

Well I'm not too sure yet to be honest. I don't really want to live in Tampa because it is ~ 1 hour drive to campus, which leads to time, money, and sweating 👎

The upside is that I wouldn't have to move far, if anywhere at all. I'm still trying to weigh my options here. It's a really tough decision. 🙁

Did you try to petition?

Did you try to petition?

No because I currently live in Tampa so St. Pete really wouldn't be that bad. After all, it was my 2nd choice. My logic is to stay in St. Pete for a year and if I really don't like it, then petition after, or close to the end, of my first year on the grounds of wanting to pursue the joint MBA degree.

I think feeling it out for a year would be fine because I was in Gainesville for four years so I will have a solid basis of comparison between the two cities after 1 full year, ya know?

That's true... it's kind of like trying to stay in Miami and go to Nova or something. I definitely think living close to school is good because it makes you want to go to class more, you get more sleep, more study time, you don't feel bad about the money you spend on gas, miles on your car, etc. I lived kinda far from school in undergrad and it was kind of stressful, but I saved money on rent and not having to move closer but to a less desirable apartment. I guess it all depends on the dynamics of the particular area you live in.

Ya you are probably going to love the St.Pete campus anyway.. people keep saying that after going to one of the distant campuses they couldn't imagine it any other way because of the close group of students they meet.

Yeah well that's the thing... UF offers distance learning through streaming video so all of our lectures are online. We never have a live lecture. We only meet on campus for labs, presentations, and things like that. But still, that's 2-3 times a week. thats 4-6 hours of driving and precious $$ I could be using on other necessities.

I really wouldn't mind living near campus AS LONG AS I find a pharm school/dental roommate or someone who has a similar schedule and similar list of priorities. My girlfriend will most likely be moving home for 6 months so she's out of the question for now as far as a roommate goes. My other option is to stay in Tampa with a friend (and other current roommate) and make the commute to St. Pete several times a week*. It's frustrating

I went to Buchholz High school (i.e the best high school in Gainesville 😛)! After being in Gainesville for high school I really wanted to get out but am glad to be heading back now! That sucks you didn't get the Gainesville campus, but you are right a scenery change never hurts. I really didn't think I would get the Gainesville campus because I figured they would give preference to people who went to UF for undergrad.... Oh the mysteries of the adcom!

I hope so. I've been hearing the same thing. :xf:

Tell me about it!!!

I also think it will be good to get out of Gville because it is just so darn competitive. I love me some healthy competition, but it is literally a city full of nothing but 50,000 students with similar goals. I'm hoping St. Pete will allow me a better chance to "stand out" :xf:

I feel your pain. I'm not sure if my boyfriend is moving with me to Georgia because he dives and sells tropical fish and ummm... there's no ocean in Atlanta. LOL That's his job and passion so I don't expect him to give that up, just like he doesn't expect me to stay here and not go to pharmacy school! haha

I am starting out in a one bedroom alone because I'm scared of living with roommates because I had traumatic experiences in Miami. haha I lived with people who either didn't care about school or weren't even in school though, so I think if I meet someone cool my first year I might get a roommate after that. A lot of P1's have mentioned they transitioned from a 1 bedroom to a 2 bedroom, so it sounds like a good plan. I couldn't afford to live alone if my rent was high though. I found the largest 1 bedroom across the fence from school and it's only 650/month plus a student discount. But there are smaller ones with no washer and dryer that are in the 500's too. I also have two cats that will escape if I have a roommate that leaves the door open so I need to look out for them too. lol

Hi everyone! I just joined the network. I will be attending the Orlando campus. Hope to see everyone at orientation! 🙂

I would prefer living by myself the first year, but the places I was looking at are like $850/mo. not including utilities. If that's the case, I might as well stay in Tampa and save $300+/mo. and live with someone I know I can live with. She is a vet tech student so she is constantly studying which is perfect.

But a 1-1 apt. is preferable in my situation. I see what you're saying about roommates, and this is NOT the time to experiment with random's IMO. I'm gonna look around and see if I can find affordable rent for a 1 bedroom apt because that is my first choice. 2nd choice would be find pharm school roommate, 3rd choice = Tampa with current roommate. UGHH it never ends, does it?

Yeah this is one reason why I don't really mind going to a private school because I'm saving money on cost of living so it kinda evens out in the end. I think I'd be over 200,000 in debt if I attended a private school in south Florida. UF has great tuition so the rent isn't too bad, and Gainesville is even more affordable for rent, but there are huge benefits of living in St Pete too (I ranked St Pete first actually when I applied 🙂).

Hopefully you can find a decent one bedroom. I don't really know the area, but maybe if you looked farther away from the school or beach, but still in Pinellas County rather than Hillsborough it would be more affordable but less than 1 hour drive?

Thanks! Penny said I should receive my "official conditional acceptance" by April 23rd. Do you remember when you received yours? Was it a few days before the date she told you? I have a mercer interview on April 23rd and I want to cancel... but I don't want to cancel until I SEE the official conditional letter. Mercer is my 2nd choice by the way... I'm kinda worried, what if something goes wrong with UF. Any advice?

I doubt anything 'technical' would go wrong with UF as far as them not sending your letter or something. The only real worry I could foresee is if you still have a few pre-reqs you need to pass for UF (Mercer doesn't require Physics II or A&P).

Honestly, I'm pretty sure you have nothing to worry about. First of all.. from the moment you were granted an interview you were pretty much in. + Penny said you have been granted conditional acceptance so that should eliminate all doubt. Now you are just waiting for a scary list of all the stuff you have to do before June.

I agree. Unless you fail to submit all of the necessary paperwork (immunizations, criminal background, etc.) or actually fail the remember of your coursework, you will be a Gator pharmacy student in the Fall. I personally ditched 2 other interviews as soon as I received that email from Penny.

Does anyone know what would happen if I don't pass a class thats not a pre-req but is required for my degree. Do they still revoke admission?

It is already official. To quote my (and I assume your e-mail:

"This is notification of your Conditional Admission to the University of Florida, College of Pharmacy for Fall 2010. We will send you an official Conditional Admission letter via email by Friday, April 23, 2010."

We don't have the official letter stating what we need to do (CPR, immunizations, send official transcripts of all prior schools, get at least a C in any courses you are now taking...)

You HAVE already received, "notification of your Conditional Admission." That is pretty black and white.

If you really want to be conservative (as do I) then keep in mind that even after we receive our official Conditional Admission letter by 4/23/2010, it means nothing as we still need to (1) graduate and (2) pass the boards.

http://www.cop.ufl.edu/studaff/retention-rates.pdf

I will be attending the Orlando campus, and yes, last year 100% of the students at all of the distance campuses passed the boards on their first attempt, and over 99% of UFCOP as a whole... the pressure is on until we pass our boards!!!

I got the conditional acceptance email from Penny after my interview on Friday. I am waiting for the "official" conditional acceptance email though, just what will be in that email? What do I have to do by June?
