This Saturday at 8:30. I am soooo excited!!! I'll be driving up on Friday and staying one night and then driving back after the interview. How about you? When is your interview for Auburn? BTW, is that your dog in your avatar?

nope, not my dog...i wish! but the facial expression was classic.

my interview is next thursday. so close! once i get past my genetics exam i'll be able to focus on getting ready for the interview. i'm so nervous but excited.

So I've been practicing for my interview and the question, "what will you do if you don't get into vet school?" came up.

Well, I've already gotten in somewhere. Do I tell them that or stick with my original answer before I go in?
 
Kind of tough. I doubt that telling them can hurt you. It shows that you're a strong enough applicant to be accepted OOS and they aren't going to grade your interview answers based on the fact that they know you've already been accepted somewhere else. It's in the school's best interest to pursue strong successful candidates, and if you don't accept, there's always the next person on the list screaming, "pick me!!!". I hope that this helps and is in some way logical. GOOD LUCK!!!

I would tell them about the acceptance, but also mention whatever your backup plan was, just so they know you had one. That way, you protect yourself from any image of being conceited. Good luck!

I am in love with UF!!!!!!!!!!!! Wanted to post last night, but of course, forgot charger for my laptop and iphone's battery went dead. Anyways, I am in love with that vet school!!! It took over an hour just to take a tour through the hospitals. It was like sensory overload and I felt like a kid in a candy store!! From their new small animal hospital, to MRI for horses, zoo medicine, shelter medicine, mobile equine diagnostics, ASPCA veterinary forensics..I could go on forever....A true dream come true just to be able to have that interview and witness that vet school. I think that they should have charged for that tour..got to witness the horses recovering from colic in their stables, the anatomy lab with actual dissected horse, surgery rooms with students practicing surgery (on cadavers), small and large animal hospitals, food science building, pathology, radiology, well, you get the idea! Good luck to all of those interviewing in the next session!!! Don't stress about it and you will see what I mean about that school. That place is a vet student's dream!!!!

Quick question and kind of off topic but.. - I didn't apply to UF this year but in the event that I am completely denied this year I want to apply to their program for admission next year. My question: they have a nutrition prerequisite and I wanted to know if you have to take animal nutrition or if you can just take introduction to nutrition (general biological nutrition) to meet the requirement. And if you need to take animal nutr. - can anyone recommend a good online nutrition course that is done completely online. Thanks 😀
 
Yes, you have to take animal nutrition for admission (the animal science nutrition course). Some online courses are offered through OkState, UK, KSU, NCState, and Purdue. You can actually take it the summer before admission. I haven't taken the animal science course, so will be taking that this summer if I get accepted. Hope this helps!

Kansas State's online animal nutrition -- hands down. i couldn't be happier with this course. i'm almost finished with it.

Hey lyndaelyzoo. I thought the interview went really well (hopefully). It was a lot less intimidating than I heard it was supposed to be, so that was a relief. I love UF. I'm actually very very familiar with the school. I'm there now as an undergraduate and have two jobs there in SA and LA surgery and research, so it's like my 2nd home. But, everything you mentioned is true. It's really a fantastic place. 🙂
 
Thanks for the advice yndaelyzoo and rileyroo. I am debating between the online course at Kansas and the one a Rutgers. Kansas because I have heard that it is a really good one and Rutgers because I know the veterinarian who teaches the course (she teaches at my undergrad). Rileyroo, if you don't mind me asking, how are the assignment and tests done for Kansas's course. Do you do them realtime online or are they filled out in like a word document and emailed to the professor? Thanks for the help.

I also took the Kansas online nutrition course and thought it was fantastic. Everything is online (mainly quizzes and tests) except for one paper you email to the professor at the end. The tests you have to take at a testing center.

I expected a lot of interrogation. Most of my friends have interviewed for med/dental school there, and that seems to be the common trend. But, I had a really great experience with my interviewers. And all of the students were very welcoming. It helped to calm my nerves when I saw a lot of familiar faces.

WOW!!! So you were probably giving your own tour!! That's exciting that you are working in SA and LA surgery and research. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of research are you doing with the large animals?

Sorry, I meant it as I work in SA and LA surgery and also do research. The research is SA only. But I let the students do all the talking in the tour haha. Felt like it wasn't really my place to chime in.
 
The interview was not what I had prepared for - I thought it would be all "what would you do in this situation/tell me about a time when..." type of questions. But I got questions such as "why do dogs bark?" "what do you think of cosmetic procedures?"

I went in, not wanting to go there... actually, wanting to go anywhere but there... I had wanted to decline my interview I was so against going there... I've spent 4 years in gainesville and need a change. The people I've been exposed to are generally not nice, professors don't give a darn for the most part and I was tired of being in the town... I had fallen in love with Iowa - and to my extreme surprise have been accepted there... My friends, bf and parents convinced me to keep the interview at least and check out the school (b/c surprisingly I had never toured the school in my 4 years here).

I went, did prepare (b/c I did want to do as best as I could), talked to the 1st years, took the tour, and ran into a girl in her first year there who was in my shoes exactly last year; she talked to me for over 20 minutes. I walked away feeling 180 about the school; I was (and still am) at the point where I would choose UF over Iowa. The vet school was surprisingly unlike undergrad here - and I couldn't be more happy and excited about it...

Now I feel so anxious, waiting until April!

That's great! I'm also feeling iffy about having to staying in Gainesville after being here for undergrad. Hopefully the interview day will change my notions as well!🙂
 
For those of you that had your interviews already, any suggestions on how to prepare? Were the questions similar to those posted in the feedback?
 
Interview on the 20th!! Heading in on the 19th! Any mishaps I should look out for or really bizarre interview questions?

That's really interesting... Because most of my questions were more of the former type. Like: "Give an example of something you have done which contributed to your community in a meaningful and lasting way through school or work."

Maybe it really depends on your interviewing team. I also think they have a huge pool of questions. We went through about 40 in my interview.


As for preparing - I'm no good with advice for interviews. I do them cold since preparing would stress me out more than thinking on my feet the day of the interview. Just know why you want to attend UF specifically. They may ask it, they may not, but if there's any question you don't want to screw up, it's that one.

Hey guys... Good luck on the interviews!!! I also have a condo with rooms to rent, all inclusive furnished. 5 minutes to the vet school. It's a 3 bedroom 2.5 bath in a quite community. I have 2 rooms with a shared bathroom, one large and one smaller (you get your own sink and toilet but have to share the shower). PM me if you are interested or want more info, I can arrange a viewing during interview time if you are out of state! 😀😀

Can anyone inform me about the cost of living in gainesville? The range of how much a one bedroom apartment is. Im trying to determine my loan amount. I know how much the school is per year, just dont know if the cost of living is less than my hometown, Which I think it is
 
It's pretty cheap to live here...a 1 bedroom can range anywhere from 500-900/month (before utilities) depending on how nice of an apartment you want.

I really like Hidden Village for the fact that they dont have breed restrictions on pets and they have a dog park on the property. Animals that were adopted get to live for free, so no monthly pet fees! It is a Paradigm property and Im not a huge fan of them, but I think this complex sounds great for someone with dogs. A 1 bedroom there ranges from $500-600/month.

If you visit Paradigm's website (they are the biggest housing company in Gainesville), they will have a list of all their properties' websites which include floor plans & prices.

JuniorJumper: That place looks nice in the pictures. How is the noise there? I am really concerned about loud neighbors and paper thin walls when studying! Do you know of any complexes that have primarily professional students...i.e. less undergrads?!! Thanks!
 
There is one complex that I looked at that had mostly law students and was pet friendly. I will have to think of the name of it and get back to you - it is right on the corner of 34th Street and 2nd Avenue, not too far from the vet school but 34th Street gets very congested in the mornings with so much traffic.

All of the apartments I have lived or been in have pretty thin walls. Some are worse than others but I have really gotten used to it and it never affected me being able to study at home during undergrad. The way a lot of apartments here are laid out allows you to be able to escape a noisy neighbor by moving into a different room where you don't share a wall with them.

If you are looking for places with thicker walls then you might want to look into living in a condo... most of the apartment places are paper thin, but many condos are cement block build. I live in Casablanca and I have NEVER heard the neighbors, and I know they are there haha. It might be a little harder to find a place because most people own then privately and rent them out either on craigslist or with a for rent sign.
 
Interview coming up this Saturday :soexcited:. Really looking forward to seeing the facilities people have been raving about. I keep telling myself not to blow this interview and it's making me more nervous 😱.

I'm also interviewing on Saturday as an OOS student. Anyone else interviewing on Saturday that is OOS? This will be my 4th time to visit UF and 3rd to the vet school. I absolutely love the school and I'm really excited to get to interview, but I'm nervous about the OOS tuition changes. Anyone else out there feel similarly?
