Hey, Guys I need some in-put!

I talked to the people at Antioch Park (this is the park I thougt would be good to have the BBQ at)

What day do we want to have it?
I figured it is between Sat. Aug. 5th and Sun. Aug 6th. I would prefer Sun Aug 6th because my husband works on Saturdays but if Sat is better for everyone else it is fine with me.

There are two times to pick from. We can reserve from 10am-2pm or 3-10pm. (If we reserve from 10am-2pm, we can still stay at the park but if someone has reserved the shelter after us, we have to move from that shetter)

There are two type of shelters, small and medium.
The small hold 48 to 60 people and is $25 is reserve for Johnson County Residence(which I am)
The medium holds about 100 people and is $30 is reserve.
( I didn't know if we want to reserve the larger one so that we have more room or just go with the smaller one)

The person I spoke with said that we might want to go ahead and reserve it within the next two months so that we won't have a problem getting a shelter. Right now all of them are open. But there are only a couple of the shelters that are close to the playground.

(Also this park does not allow alcohol or loud music, if this is a problem let me know

Here's my vote:

Sunday, August 6, 3p - 10p

for $5.00 more I'd go for the bigger shelter

Eric J

Sunday sounds great, 3-10 is good! I agree with Flipper, $5 more for the bigger place. How can we help you with the reservation cost?

Hey Sunday 3-10 sounds good to me. I agree we might as well spend 5 more dollars for the bigger one.
Thanks for working on this if there is anything I can do just let me know.
Jodie

Sunday the 6th from 3-10pm is Great with us--we'll be there. The larger one sounds good too for $5 more. Julie, please let us know how we can help with the preparation and deposit.

You must feel pretty lucky to be in KC already. We'll be joining you real soon!!

Hi guys, I'm new to this message board. I'm also in UHS class of 2004! I'm moving up to KC in July, will anyone be there yet? I'd love to get together with some of you prior to school starting. I think the BBQ sounds like a great idea! Count me in! Do we need to send you some $$ for the reservation? Can't wait to meet you all!

Erica

Hey guys!

It sounds like it will be Aug. 6th from 3-10pm

I will reserve the shelter within the next couple of weeks and I will get the larger one. I will try to get the one closest to the playground.
I will handle the deposit, It will be what my husband and I bring to the BBQ, if that's ok with everyone.

Aug 6, 3-10 sounds great and your handling the deposit as y'alls contribution sounds good too. Now, what about the rest of us? Do we want to do potluck, pitch in for hamburgers, hotdogs, and T-bones? What kind of ideas do the rest of you have?

Also, is there anyway we can get info from admissions about our future classmates that don't post to this bulletin board?

My wife, Cheryl, and I are coming up to KC May 18-21 do some house hunting. Anyone care to join us?

See y'all soon....

What is the name of the park? Where is the park located?

The name of the park is Antioch Park.
It is located at 65th and antioch. It is really easy to get to. Once on I-35 you get off at 67th st. and depending which way you are coming from you turn left if heading south on I-35 and right if heading north. 67th street dead ends at Antioch. You take a left onto Antioch and the park is on your right.
When it gets closer to Aug. I will write up directions and send it to everyone.

It is not one of the larger parks in the area but it is nice. It has a pond with ducks and a nice play area for children.

I like the idea of hamburgers and hot dogs. It's pretty easy and cheap. Those who don't bring hamburgers and hotdogs can bring side dishes, chips, drinks, etc. I guess we can sign up for stuff when we get closer to the date.

Thanks Julie for getting the park!

Hey, what happened to all the UHS bound students? Did y'all fall off the planet? Two whole days and no posts...y'all ought to be ashamed!!!!

Sara, what's the list up to now?

Anyone know the name/phone number for those duplexes near BR?

Who's going to be in KC this summer?

Eric J
UHS04

Hey Doc2004,

Do you remember what Dan's last name is?

Eric J

Hey flipper! OKay, our list is up to 16 students, 22 students with spouses, and 26 coming to the BBQ (with kids). Only 209 more students to find.
smile.gif

Okay, the name of the duplex is Creekwood Park. They have 3 bedrms, 2 bath duplexes with single or double car garages. They rent for $900-930/month. Email me if you want the number and I can send it to you.

Hope this helps!

Hello all,

Sorry we haven't been on the message board for some time--we've had a little mishap where our car was totalled. We're now out looking for a new one. Somehow, we get the feeling this all happened in good time. Anyways, we are going to KC house hunting from April 27th to May 1st.(Looks like we'll miss you and your wife, Eric). We could stop by the school and find out if we could get a list of our future classmates OR find some way that our BBQ can be communicated to incoming students. There's gotta be a way!! We think hot dogs and hamburgers is a good/easy idea also. Other things that would compliment this would be chips, macaroni or potatoe salad. What do you all think about bringing our own drinks?? That way--everyone's happy and there will be enough for everyone to go around.

Sara--the list is LOOKING GOOD. We'll be sending you more info soon on interests, etc.

Yaaaaahhhhhhooooooo--UHS!!!!!!

You may consider contacting whoever heads up the UHS student auxillary. This is the club that is made up of spouses of medical students. I know that last summer, before we started school, the auxillary held a picnic similar to what you are planning. PErhaps they could help orchestrate things as well as get a few current students involved who could possibly help answer questions or whatever. I have no clue who runs the club, so if you want call the school and just ask about it. I'm sure you will eventually get directed to someone who can give you a contact number.

To All Members of UHS 2004:

In reviewing The List that Sara has been keeping for us, I've noticed that we are honored to have amongst us a graduate of that hallowed institution of higher education...Erica, from Texas A&M!!

Now being a Texas boy myself and married to an Aggie, I'll have a distinct advantage over the rest of you non Texans when it comes to discussing medical type stuff with Erica. Being the congenital(this will be explained shortly!) Southern Gentleman that my mother is so proud of, especially since she now perceives me as a future doctor and not just a freeloading bum, I will share some tips on how to understand Aggie Medical Terminology!

ARTERY...... THE STUDY OF FINE PAINTINGS
BARIUM...... WHAT YOU DO WHEN CPR FAILS
BENIGN...... WHAT YOU ARE AFTER YOU BE EIGHT
COMA........ A PUNCTUATION MARK
COLIC....... A SHEEP DAWG
CONGENITAL.. FRIENDLY (LIKE ME!)
DILATE...... LIVE LONG
FESTER...... SLANG FOR QUICKER
G.I. SERIES. SOLDIER BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
MORBID...... HIGHER OFFER
NITRATE..... LOWER THAN THE DAY RATE
NODE........ WAS AWARE OF
OUTPATIENT.. PERSON WHO HAS FAINTED
POST-OPERATIVE.. LETTER CARRIER
PROTEIN..... IN FAVOR OF YOUNG PEOPLE
SECRETION... HIDING ANYTHING
SEROLOGY.... STUDY OF MEDIEVAL KNIGHTHOOD
TABLET...... SMALL TABLE
TUMOR....... AN EXTRA PAIR
VARICOSE VEINS.. VEINS CLOSE TOGETHER
URINE....... OPOSITE OF YOU'RE OUT

Now, hopefully we'll all be on a level playing field when classes start this fall and I also hope to being joining y'all unless certain former Aggies take offense to this little lesson!

See y'all really soon.....

Eric J - proud to be married to a former Aggie - UHS04

Eric - Good one. Well, I might as well face up to it now... That other Aggie (hee, not your wife) is my roommate. Anything else I should know about former Aggies? Being a Gator, in the SEC, I haven't had much contact with Aggies. I bet I should start learning the lingo now, that way we'll have that communication thing down pat.

Hey now....be careful with those Aggie jokes! Glad to hear I'm not the only one in the bunch. Thanks for sticking up for me Sara! When did your wife graduate? With what degree? Are ya'll (had to throw that in there for a real TX affect) still in TX? Maybe we could meet up sometime?!

To all starting at UHS this fall.

Hi all! I too will see you this fall. I was so glad to get accepted! It sounds like we are all very enthusiastic about the upcoming year (let's see how we all feel in a few months, huh?? haha).

The picnic plan sounds great, but I don't know when I'll be moving up there or where I will live yet. Best of luck to everyone.

Anyone from UHS 2004 going to be in KC May 16-20?

Hope you can add me to the list. I interview on May 17. Congrats to all on your acceptances. BBQ is a great idea.

Hey flipper I think that my fiance and I will be in KC on the 16th. I do believe we are heading up there on the 14th or 15th, and we will be staying a couple of days looking at apartments. If you want to get together with us for dinner get in touch.

Sara,

The easiest way to handle the aggie, your new roommate, is when she starts getting out of hand - remind her of the 51 to 6 whipping in Norman. That will send her whimpering in the corner for the remainder of the day.

Hello Everyone!
I am pretty excited to finally find this site. I too will be attending UHS this August. Just started looking for housing...thanks for all the info it really helps. Unfortunately I will be moving in from Montana so I can only shop for an apt over the net. If I really get desperate I might try the apt seekers....has anyone had any luck with them?

Looking forward to meeting you all this fall!
Cynthia

Cynthia- what kind of housing are you looking for? (apartment, duplex, house, etc.) Benningtion is popular, but it depends how big of a place you want or need.. (if you have a family or spouse). I've looked at several apartments, so I might be able to help. However, I'm clueless when it comes to houses. Apt Hunters was alright, although they will try to direct you to the pricier places.

Hey now Okie Sooner...I thought we were on the same side here. We don't need to get into football do we? Maybe we can agree on a team to both cheer for....Chiefs??? Until then we'll just have to wait for the big game next season! Maybe I'll even watch it with you!

Hi everyone! I just found out that I too will be in the class of 2004. Unlike the rest of you, I will be commuting from Topeka, about an hour away. I look forward to the picnic. Count me in. My husband and two daughters will probably come too. One of them will be in the class of 2004 too - at KU!

Sara,

Thanks for your help....I am looking for a 1 bdroom apt. I am not picky at all (I don't need much more than a place for a bed and a bathroom would be nice
smile.gif
) Bennington would not be bad, but I don't know too much about the place. Do you still have phone numbers for some of the complexes? I would really appreciate it.

Cynthia

Hey Cynthia - try Apartments.com. They list many of the apartments suggested by the Apartment Hunters people, including Bennington Ridge. They have pictures and floor plans too. I found Bennington using:
State : Missouri
Region(s) : Kansas City & Vicinity
Area(s) : Clay & Platte Counties
Community(ies) : Kansas City - North

Hope this helps.

I lived in Gladstone when I was at UHS. (which is North KC/Caly County). Let me just tell you that when it snows or roads get icy...it will take you forever to get home from school or vice versa. You have to cross a big bridge to get to clay county and when its snowing it gets baddddddd....If I had to do it over again, I would live at the University Towers..

Okay, I will be a little easier on the 51-6 slaying last year. I guess it was last year. If we can not agree on a team to cheer for than maybe just hating the redneck longhorns will be enough.

Okie- I don't think I'll be able to jeer at the Longhorns with you. They have a nice little place in my book from when they beat Nebraska in 96. (Yes, that is when the Fightin' Gators rolled on to win the National Championship, Go Gators!!!) We could all just cheer for the Gators, or how about against Florida State!?!

The list looks great. Thanks! I am going to call the school and make sure there are no other functions that weekend and I will also find out if there is a way to get in touch with some of our other future class mates.

I'll participate in anything anti-Longhorn. At least we agree on that. Thanks for the list Sara. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone on it! If anyone is going to be moving in July email me! I'm moving up the first weekend.

I'll go Anti-Longhorns with you but I'll have to expand that to Anti-Texas in general and Anti-Florida State, Anti-Florida(sorry Sara)and Anti about anyone else who doesnt wear the Crimson & Cream. GO SOONERS!

Booooooo! Crimson and Cream??? That basically is the same as Maroon and White so I can't imagine you having a problem with A&M! LOL Gig 'em Aggies!

Crimson & Cream?! Did they get those colors out of a crayola box?! Just kidding. I still say we all cheer for the Orange and Blue! Go Gators!!

Hey flipper,guylon07 and all others who may be looking for housing some time soon--we just got back from KC and we have quite a bit of information on duplexes and townhomes if you are interested. We spent about 4 days looking at all the surrounding areas from Lee's Summit, Blue Springs, Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, North KC and Liberty. We can give you insight as to pricing, location, distance from school, size of floorplan and elementary schools in area, etc. Kansas City school district just lost their accreditation Monday, May 1st--so, we were warned to stay out of these schools. Anyway, email us and let us know if you have questions. We'd be glad to help.

I have been here for 2 years now,and if anyone has the time to REALLY look around, I suggest that you look for homes to rent around KU medical center (or even apts). The area is more fun, KU is a GREAT place to study, and it is closer to school. Brookside is a beautiful neighborhood if any of you are looking to buy a house. For some reason, Bennington has a deal with some apt search guide and that is where everyone is directed toward. I have NO idea why. It is in such a crappy area, nothing to do, nothing to see bleh!!! If you are gonna be living in this town, at least enjoy some of the city. Trust me, I had a pretty good time. Look around the plaza or something.
By the way, winters are cake here. Virtually no snow and it doesn't even get very cold. I am from Indianapolis, and KC winters have been nothing.

Oh yeah...GO BIG TEN!!!! (Nebraska, Oklahoma??? do they have teams?!)

Do Oklahoma or Nebraska have football teams? Well doctor boy does Carter have pills? Don't be a player hater just because OU is #2 in the total number of National Championships only to Alabama with Nebraska being a close 3rd. I'm not sure if all of the teams together in the Big Ten could equal either teams individual number and ----------------Florida Gators??????? I'm begging to question the application process used by UHS.

P.S.
"Gig'em Aggies?????" What the heck is that. It sounds as if it may be a way to release copious phlegm. Have I just about insulted everyone now?

[This message has been edited by Okie Sooner (edited 05-05-2000).]

Yadda yadda yadda.
I hear that same ol excuse time and time again "look at how many championships we have..." Guess what, if you were in a decent conference, with some decent opponents, maybe your intraconference play would be more competative. Instead, there are 2 good teams maybe 3. Big Ten teams simply don't go undefeated because of the tough schedules, therefor they don't get those mighty records florida and big 12 schools get. Hell, the orange bowl is on FL home field!!
Anyway, this isn't what this bulleting board is about. I will be starting my 3rd year soon, so I will leave these postings for the up and coming 1st years.
good luck to all of you.

e

I'm sorry I did not mean to truly offend anyone, only stir the pot a little bit. It was never my intention to chase off a third year by stating how few national champions the big ten has. If everyone else is also upset my name is Greg, but if not then I will reveal my true name later. I look forward to having some study breaks to chear on the home schools and watch the sooners dominate.

all in good fun

Thanks Brendon! I appreciate you using my name like that.

WOW! What a response to the housing info. Hope the list was helpful to those of you that inquired.

I have a question to those current students of UHS or if anyone else out there may know. I realize that our student budget is made out for 9months of the year. I was wondering what the current students are doing to meet their financial obligations for the other 3 months when not in school. Most apartments ask for a 6mos to 1 year lease--even a 2 year lease. For those of us from out of state, it just wouldn't be feasable to pick up and go home for the summer. Are there plenty of employers willing to hire students just for the summer?? Any info on this would be great.

------------------
dreamTeam
UHS04

There are different ways people deal with this. If you get the max loan amount, and if you are diligent in your management of that money, you can make it streatch to at least cover rent over the summer. Many students go home and stay with their folks over the summer and then get a new apartment when they come back. Some get help from their parents to handle the summer expenses, while others (like me) are married and have a secondary source of income because their spouse works. Also, in our case, we managed to set aside some money before I started school which will help handle the summer expenses. Also, I live at Bennington, and I don't believe I had to put down any big deposits (although I don't really remember.) Summertime is a source of stress for all of us who live and die by financial aid, but don't worry...everyone manages to get through it somehow
biggrin.gif

When I was at UHS, I was completely dependent on financial aid and was not able to get any help from any other resources. You cant return your apt in the summer as your lease is usually a 12mo lease..(exception: University towers will let you leave your apt for the summer and pay only $100/mo while your apt is unoccupied)....
Anyhow I managed just fine with financial aid that I got...I also tutored anatomy, histology, and physiology at a local community college and I did research at UHS which was partially funded and got some money for that since I did all the data processing/collecting myself. Doing research is probably the best option to supplement your financial aid because it will also help you get into a competitive residency.
You will be just fine so don?t worry too much about money....
P.S. I just signed my exit interview forms for financial aid and it was the most depressing thing I have ever signed.
