UIC or MCW?....or does this question need its own thread?

UIC or MCW?....or does this question need its own thread?

The real question might be Milwaukee or Chicago (running under the assumption the Chicago Campus is assigned to you, which might be a stretch). I would choose UIC if I got the Chicago campus and MCW otherwise. Milwaukee has more of a small town feel and is a city that I absolutely love (Miller Park, Microbrew's such as Sprecher), so I think the choice might be difficult even with the Chicago campus option. Both are great medical schools and rated about the same (although I think MCW ias rated by USworld and News higher than UIC, if you subscribe to their system). The point is, you have a great choice and no reason to be frustrated anymore.🙂

Just got my site assignment today.. i got urbana/peoria. Anyone else get their assignments? If so, did anyone end up with chicago??
Hey Cali, were you accepted with this most recent round (February meeting)?

I'm IS, and as pointed out above, there really isnt thaat big of a tuition diff...i should change my name from "frustrated" to "confused"

i havent been assigned yet..but i think all three campuses have something cool to offer..chicago:the city, u/rockford: you get awsome hands on experience since they dont have many residents so you get to work right under the attendings, u/peoria: i hear they have the highest board exam passing rate (or something along those lines)..

Um...have you ever seen Rockford or Peoria?

haha yeah i have...obv no where near as cool as chicago..but its med school, its not like we're gonna have the time to have fun everyday...and chicago is just a drive away..

Is Peoria really that bad? I keep looking at websites for it and it seems there are quite a few parks, it is right on a river that balloons into a lake that is more than a mile wide, seems to have a quaint little downtown area and is home to two large hospitals that dominate its economic base. There are also two other fair sized universities and one that is adjacent to the College of Medicine. Maybe I am rationalizing this in my head, preparing to go there, but the more I see and read of Peoria, the more I am intrigued by it. I mean, if I can play in Peoria, I can play anywhere😀 (sorry for the corny humor).

i actually just got the same scholarship offer as tough cookies. and i do have my FAFSA filled out and submitted already. it was such a welcome surprise. 🙂

I received a scholarship too, a nice out of nowhere boost.

question: does accepting the scholarship mean you are committing to enroll there? I am under the impression that it does not, it is just another reason to choose UIC. As I understand it, acceptance of the scholarship does not officially bind you to the school any more than holding a place in the class does.

anybody know for sure?

So I just got a letter indicating that I've been offered a small merit scholarship by UIC. Has anyone else gotten this? It was a nice surprise, but it says I have to decide whether to accept the scholarship by March 19. I'm still not positive that I'm going to be enrolling, but I assume I can't accept the award and then not matriculate. Hmm, I guess this is advancing my decision timetable a bit.

Would anybody mind saying what kind of scholarship UIC is offering?

well for anyone on that waitlist for UIC, get ready... i am about to forfeit my acceptance. i wrote a letter asking to be placed at the chicago campus, and they responded with something like, "based on the campus preference you listed, you have been selected to begin at urbana bla bla bla." looks like chicago must be full, because i listed a ton of reasons why i needed to be placed there. for those interested, you can petition a site assignment, but you wont hear back regarding site changes until after may 15th!

Anyone know anything about parking at UIC? I don't remember them saying anything about student parking during the interviews/tours. Is anyone else planning on keeping a car in Chicago? I'm OOS, so I don't know anything about accessibility of parking and affordability of parking fees associated with UIC. Thanks!

To get parking near UIC, you can get a sticker with your housing area (or zone), but parking is difficult and I hope that if you choose to keep a car, you are an effective parallel parker. To get the zone sticker, you need a chicago sticker which will cost about $75, I think. If you live nearby, there are great neighborhoods, apartments within a five to ten minute walk of the university, I would just walk everyday (and with a bike, the lakshore and the museum campus is a short 2 mile ride). If you have never seen the lakeshore trail, it is a great place to run, walk, bike and is 18 miles from end to end. If you have your legs and I bike, you should be set. The best places to live are between the undergraduate and medical campuses and, like I said, it is best to just walk in those cases. Should you want to live farther and drive to school (the blue line is a good option otherwise), parking is available for about $250-300 a semester. That is a very reasonable chicago rate. Keep in mind that Chicago is pretty expensive, but if you are coming from california, Chi-town might seem cheap by comparison.

anyone else debating btwn rush and uic (rockford)??

$$ (I'm instate) v. location (born and raised in chicago, with a best friend going to chicago campus)). should i assume that their facilities and clinical practices are on equal levels?

Thanks for the info. Does the chicago sticker pertain those who choose to live in the dorms for the first year or two? Does UIC have a designated student parking lot for the dorm?

Parking on the west side/med campus is very limited. The chicago permit sticker will not work within the UIC hospital campus/SSR/med school. It will work just east of Ashland and also west of Damen, but parking is always difficult there. The main University lot is the Wood Street lot, about 2-3 blocks from the dorm. If you are lucky, you may get a spot there, but most of those spots will go to hospital staff and visitors first. The Paulina garage also goes to hospital staff. Other parking lots are farther away and not so great... aka your car in an unattended open lot where car theft is frequent.

If you are going to live near the school, I would recommend not bringing your car. The public transportation is decent, and you'll learn how to get around easily. Plus, parking in a private lot is expensive. I can't remember exactly but I think the lot with the MD Apts is like $150-200 a month.

i got u/rockford...hey pmsm, i know a kid in urbana and he said tuition is only 25 thousand..im really confused..do you mind showing me your calculations/website where it shows the higher price?? thankss

If it's the same as the UIC Chicago campus, tuition is $25,000, but that doesn't count two 10k (each) summers as well as about 12k in fees over the four years. If you add that all up and divide by 4 it comes to about $30,000 a year for tuition & fees, not $25,000.

is 12k in fees living and housing? either way thirty thousand is still cheaper than thirty seven thousand just for tuition at mcw

New west side UIC students for parking will be placed in the W-2 lot. That lot is located at Damen and Harrison. It's the closest lot to SSR. I haven't heard of anyone's car being stolen there. You do need to swip out to leave the lot. Hospital staff use the Paulina lot, not the Wood St. lot. If you stay around long enough, they will give you the opportunity to upgrade to the Wood St. lot. There's really no where to drive the car except to the Jewel.

You can easily get around Chicago without a car, I think a bike is the best means of transporting oneself around the city. In the winter, just use public transportation. A car would be nice if you wanted to go visit people in the suburbs, but if you don't know anyone out there, your best bet is to lose the car. You find out fast that it can be a burden (constantly having to switch sides of the street for cleanings, paying attention to bans at certain times, etc...) When I went to UIC, I lived off a blue line stop and could get to school in about 40 minutes. It wasn't the most convenient thing, but I was able to manage. Live close to campus and you won't ever really need a car. Someone mentioned MDapts, they are fine, but the other places in the area are a bit nicer (between Ashland and Racine, do not live west of Damen or south of Roosevelt (some might say Taylor)). The area is in the process of a complete facelift, so by the time you graduate, it will be ok to live anywhere near the University.

The west campus is off of the Pink line (Polk). The rush hour blue line trains are being ended this spring. You can take the Blue line to Medical district, but that'll be a 5-10 minute walk.
The area west of Damen is variable. The best deals in the close UIC area is in that area.

For those of you accepted in Feb and have gotten their site assignments...

How long after you sent in your card did you get your assignment?

First of all, to answer KCT's question, I got mine earlier this week and I sent it in last week Monday. It took about a week and a half from sending the card in to receiving assignment. So, I got Peoria, not terribly surprised or disappointed, however, when I went to order my transcripts (using the UIC student service), I noticed that they already have me updated as an MD student when I looked at my status for Fall 2008. Furthermore, it states that I am at Chicago campus. Now, this could mean a couple fo things. One is that they list everyone at Chicago campus because that is where the school is administratively headquartered. However, it could mean that an administration error has been made; either on the website (where they should list Peoria instead of Chicago) or in sending me my site assignment (which should be Chicago instead of Peoria). So I am asking former UIC undergrads who are matriculating this upcoming year at a campus other than Chicago, to check their student status for Fall 2008 and get back to me with what campus they have listed. Thank you😀

Classic--

My site assign. letter says Urbana/Peoria.... I'm an alum, so I checked Self-service to see if my old password would work and it did. Here's what my stuff says:

Curriculum Information Current Program Doctor of Medicine
Level: Professional - Chicago
Program: MD:Medicine-Urbana -UIC
Admit Term: Fall 2008 - Chicago
Admit Type: Regular Admission
Catalog Term: Fall 2008 - Chicago
College: College of Medicine at Urbana
Campus: Chicago
Major and Department: Medicine-Urbana, Administration & Gen Exp

I'm pretty sure this means I'm still in the UPR track... even though campus says "Chicago". I'm trying to petition, so hopefully I'll be in Chicago with everyone though!

Here is what I received:

I received a letter saying Peoria track, while I still think the letter is correct, I am going to call them. JMB, was your undergraduate campus Urbana or Chicago?

I went to undergrad in Urbana. On the self-service, I logged in using the UIC website though. (I'm not sure if it makes a difference)... I think your msg means that you have Chicago, but I dunno? I am hoping they will acknowledge my reasons for being in Chicago, so that I can be there too! In the Allopathic thread, someone said you can find out earlier about a site switch... Have you heard about this or know if this is possible?

I asked specifically if they would look at petitions before May 15th and the dean said yes. However, I called after I was accepted and spoke with the person in charge of site assignments and she told me that they will not consider petitions until after May 15th. I sent in a letter with the reasons why I need to be in Chicago along with supporting documentation with my site preference card. I am hoping to find out in the next few days where I will be. If I do not get Chicago I will give them a call again and see what else I can do...since what I am being told now is inconsistent with what was said interview day.

I went to undergrad in Urbana.

I am pretty sure that is why some of your campuses say Urbana and some of mine say Chicago (I was Chicago undergrad). I'll probably see you in Urbana next year and Peoria after that🙂

KCT-- Thanks for the info. I had to wait for my supporting documents, but sent my petition ahead of them. If you hear more about what else we can do, please send me a PM if you are alright with sharing the info. Otherwise, I understand. Its very stressful worrying and not being able to find until May. 🙁 Good luck though! I hope they give you Chicago immediately :luck:

Ya you are probably right. (But I'd still call to double check.) Are you going to petition for Chicago? Either way, it would be awesome to be classmates with you. You have some pretty cool experiences under your belt!

Classic17, I agree with you that its easy to get around Chicago...for the most part. I ride a bike myself, but you know that Chicago winters are not for the faint of heart. I think most people can get by during their m1-m2 years with public transport and a bike, but when the rotations kick in starting third year, a car is a must. Rotations happen at different hospitals in the city, and waiting on the public transportation when its -15 degrees is not recommended.

By the way, does anyone know how many students are accepted in the UMed Program?

if i didn't go to uic, can i check this self-serv thing? can someone tell me how to go about

The lady who runs it told me about 12-24 students get chosen for UMed
