UMDNJ-GSBS MBS Fall 2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
U guys are hardcore...making up mock schedules haha....nah but ive secretly been doing the same lol...only part is it I'm not sure which electives to take. Also I talked to a friend who is pre-dental in the program (did the 1.5yr track) and he was saying that even if u dont get to take the dental school courses u can eventually get into them if u bug the administration enough. I'm probably thinking it would be the same for med courses too. Just incase if u guys dont get in and still want to take those med courses.

That's what I figured was another benefit to the 3 semester plan. If you miss it the first fall, you can always take the 2nd fall and then med/dent schools would still see it on your app.

I looked at MGM which is 7 credits, and something else I forget, and then add research on top - makes it like 11 credits off the top of my head

Really?? So in essence they will have three semesters of grades to look at of possibly 30+ credits...cool 🙂

And Albuterol, you are so right. I might not be allowed to take MGM if they are going to select the students..but there were other classes I was interested in taking and might have to start sending some emails lol

Yah thats the reason I want to do the 3 semesters. When you do AMCAS you'll have a whole years worth of grades completed, and by the time they review your app - you might have another semesters worth of work done.

Hey guys,

I just got an acceptance letter to the Newark GSBS (my application was complete april 28 for those interested in turnaround time). I already got into VCU Certificate program and possibly NOVA (going for interview next week). Does anyone have some info about these school? I'm interested in overall eval of each program.

1. Percentage of students who get into dental school after completing the program and if it's a lot easier to get into the school where you take your masters program. (Nova saves seats for students who get an 80% or higher in each class they take into the following dental school year)

2. Helpfulness and mentorship of the staff and faculty.

3. Student life (do students help each other out or is it cut throat)

4. How much does the program help prepare students for going into med/dent.

Thanks guys! Let me know if you have any questions about other programs and hopefully i can help.

hey does any one know how long does it take the ada to send the dats scores i sent in the request on april 24th it was processed the 27th and they said they sent them out the 29th but i received an email on may5th stating that my scores were missing. Im going to call the ADA on Monday but just wanted to know if this is the normal time frame?

My DAT score was reported to school in three days after I requested. I wonder what took yours so long. You should definitely call ADA to follow up.

BTW, is there anyone who got rejected from Newark?

Are u talking about nova in fl? When was ur app completed there if that's the school u are speaking of. I also applied there and am waiting to hear something whether good or bad just kind ofvtiref of waiting.

I've no news - i havent heard anything back from them regarding my financial aid but dont expect to really.

You think its a big deal if I dont submit my immunization paperwork by may 29th?

same here...i have not heard anything either...

I would try to get those forms in by the due date..despite me not even knowing the repercussions if late lol

so Albuterol and rob..you guys are certain on attending this program, waiting on other schools?? anyone else is definite about attending this fall??

Eh I'll risk the immuno forms. lol my gut says i should get them in but im studying for the MCAT now and then on vacation for a week and so will miss the deadline. im sure theyll survive

I'm not def attending umdnj - it depends on my MCAT. If i get a good one, im going to go to UPenn I think, and if I get a bad one, i think ill got to UMDNJ as that way if I dont get into med school at least ill have a masters. The thread by Rumrunner has been swaying me about my decision, lol

yeah i read that thread and he def brought up some good points..my top two programs to apply to was UPenn and UMDNJ..and after meeting the staff in UPenn they kept telling me the same thing how the name can take you very far and I was impressed with the area..but it just came down to graduate vs undergrad classes for me..

but def understand your point, if you do get a good MCAT..theres no need for UMDNJ 👍

HAHAH rob dude I feel the same way about the immuno forms...I think you just have to get them in before you start or they wont let u register for classes ..at least thats what i think. doubt they would rescind your admissions cause of that.

I'm 99% sure that I will be attending gsbs-newark unless I get into the oral health sciences program at BU but the chances of that happening are slim since I haven't heard anything yet. Plus the umdnj cost is pretty reasonable since I will be commuting from home. Don't want to be 60-70k in debt before I start dental school.

Yah I havent heard anything from BU yet either. I'm not sweating it, i wont be going there either way

To those who have been accepted what are your plans for housing? I am asking because I was just accepted and do not know much or anything about the Newark area just looking for some advice.
Also does anyone know if they offer GA positions or any other type of tuition assistance?

Thanks

most of us are commuting..you can always try the University's Housing..contact Leslie Lucy for that..also Society Hill..i wanna say there are condos (rent/buy) that are walking distance from the school..also try University Centre: www.univcentre.com

Try also a place called the collonade - its not too terrible from what I hear.

There are a couple of apartment complexs around there

hey dr. chuck. I was looking at the rates and it's $959 monthly for 2 bedroom 1 bath? so that's 480 per person and that includes internet? Seems pretty reasonable to me. I thought univ. center was supposed to be expensive? unless im reading wrong?

Yeah about that..that's $959 per person lol..and yes it includes internet and water and cable. The only thing out of pocket is electricity..which still makes it pricey but hey think of the amenities 🙂

haha oooooooo. damn well that's a little different haha. that's still not toooooo bad. i'll keep it as a backup i suppose. any guys lookin to get an apartment nearby and lookin for roomies?

I would possibly be. I need to check out the school more. Pm if interested

Hey biochem. Ya, i had an interview at Nova southeastern in FL for the MBS and they said that it was the last interview date. Sorry. I would call them to make 100% sure though because I'd hate to misinform you.

hey guys

Haven't been on SDN for a while and this thread is becoming famous! lol

anyway,
I thought GSBS Newark program was designed to be a 1-year MS program.. I guess I was wrong..

So I guess you can just pace yourself along the semesters???
I would really love to get my masters in a year (save time & money) but I also don't wanna do bad trying to finish it in a year!😡

Best scenario would be:
finish GSBS in a year in May 2010 and
get into dental school Fall of 2010..

anyone with me??😀

I'm right there with u drstyller!

Hey just for clarification the tutition is the same whether you take 2 semesters or 3 - its just obv the housing that'd be the difference

Yeah the tuition is the same..unless you take more than 30 credits

im in the same boat as albuterol and drstyller. I would love to finish in a year and then get into dental school right after. it's all about how much of a risk that poses and whether or not one can handle 15 credits of work each semester. I think dr. chuck mentioned something about summer classes being available. If that is the case, can you not just take 1 less class each semester and take those last 2 classes during the summer and be done with it? Would be something to ask during orientation I suppose...

for those who have already filled out the financial aid, there's a section where the ask you about housing. has anyone filled out the form and is still not sure about where they will be living? I don't know which answer to put down since i don't know where i will be staying. Should I hold off on the form til I do know?

Dr. Wagner told me that I can take 12 credits in both fall and spring semester and take 6 credits of dental courses while I am doing first year in dental school as my plan is to start dental school in 2010. The only downside is the cost. I would have to pay both gsbs and dental school although I'm taking the courses at dental school. This way, I will be getting the master's degree in December of 2010. I forgot to ask her if this option applies when I go to NJDS only. Did anyone hear about this?

hmm that does sound very attractive...i will have to contact dr. wagner...what did u ask when u contacted him/her?

wow that sounds awesome. regarding the cost, isn't it approx 15k for the 30credits regardless of how long it takes you to complete? so technically it's not really as if you're paying for both gsbs and dental school...

albuterol if you find out more please share. that would be an awesome way to go about for the masters.

I actually met her in person in April before applying to the program and she was very nice to explain everything about the program. I told her that I don't want to take too many courses and end up doing poorly in the class, and she told me to take 12,12,6 credits and get my master's while I'm in dental school. She said this program is totally doable even though I was non-science major in my undergrad. If you have any question, call Dr. Wagner. She's extremely friendly and patient.

so wait..not sre how the dental application works, is a year long process like for pre-meds?? If you were able to do the program like that, that would be EXTREMELY cool...but that you be done assuming you get into NJDS for that following year right??

yes it is a year long process. so i'm going to submit my application in june 2009 with current stat and start gsbs in aug 2009 till may 2010 finishing up 24 credits. i didn't ask her if the option of taking dental courses during first year applies to only njds. might be. i'll just ask people on orientation day when i get to choose classes.

For those that are currently from Newark and going to be commuting would any of you please pm me. I am curious to what Newark is like. I am from Ohio and don't know much of that area including new York city which I have only been to for a day.
Moving is not a big deal to me just trying to get a feel for where I am going. I am also planning to visit the school some time in June.

Thanks

I also got into the i yr at UMDNJ, i am contiplating that or barry university mbs any thoughts on which one is better? i might live in a one bedroom how fast do you think the student housing will up?

hey biochem, regarding newark, it's not the safest of areas haha. The surrounding areas are quite a bit safer from what I hear. where will you be commuting from? Distance wise, it's nice cuz it's only like 20 minutes to get to the city and there's lots of ways to get there. Train, bus, etc.

As for the gsbs program, I think I might also get in touch with Dr. Wagner. It would be nice to understand more because that seems like an awesome alternative and "finish" in one year and not have to waste an extra year again before getting into dental school.

Yeah Newark is not the hot spot..its like your typical urban area, you can imagine. My best advice for anyone that is coming to Newark that have never been to an area like this is to be VERY open-minded. Honestly, I think that it's not that bad. I never feel like I am in danger when I walk to school or walk over to UMDNJ. Plus you have to be smart about it. Would you walk in an area you are unfamiliar with at night?? Alone?? Catch my drift...

Like Userah said the BEST thing about Newark is that its so close to EVERYWHERE..like Hoboken (bars!!)and New York City...which are all accessible by train or bus. There is a few shuttles that will bring you to Penn Station. The ironbound section of Newark (past penn station) is also pretty cool. There are a lot of restaurants (All types of Spanish). All those places have so much things to do..NYC is the hot spot. A lot of things to do there..musuems, clubs, lounges, bars, resaturants, parks, shopping...all that jazz! But of course, there are good things and bad things to every major ciry and so again..you have to just be mindful of your surroundings..

Hi Guys,

I just got accepted to the UMDNJ masters program in biomedical sciences for fall 2009!!! This was my first choice and the only SMP program I applied to!!! yay

Maybe I'll meet some of you guys this year at orientation and classes....

Anyone who knows, also, what classes would you suggest to take if I want to apply to med school?

I have been accepted in the 1 yr masters i am pre-dent . Do any pre-dents or pre med for that matter know what classes we will be taking so i can put it on my aadsas planned schedule, i have seen the list of classes but do we pick from that list or does anyone know how it works. Also got into Barry's biomed masters not sure what i'll do but i am leaning towards NJ b/c they have a dental school. anythoughts?

I would go to UMDNJ over barry since they have a dental school...i think barry has a pod school? Also about aadsas, not sure what classes i'm going to put in either since we don't register till august 19th and I will have submitted my application by then. Most of the classes you will take will be elective courses so its up to you which classes to take.

congratulation on your acceptance!!!!

hey guys..maybe I am the last to know..but the Fall 2009 classes are up!!
😀😀😀

I am leaning that way too plus there is a sweet post bout UMDNJ and nothing about barry so far, it seems like all you guys are cool and we should kick butt in that program. waiting on one more at midwestern (a little closer to cali then jersey). i guess we can put a bunch of electives and just send the academic update it doesnt necesarrily have to be an exact match

Exactly, I read that u can change your courses during academic update. So we should be good to go.

the only thing is barry only takes 40 studetns and UMDNJ has over 100 per yr. do you think it would be better to go to the smaller program?

what electives are you guys thinkin of takin? I emailed Dr. Wechsler who's on the admissions board at UMDNJ dental and told him about my situation and asked his advice on which electives he reccommend i take that would best prepare me for dental and would give me the most competitive edge during application cycle. I'm hoping he responds back and then I can start making some decisions on what to take next year.

Hmm reading the sudden crop of other UMDNJ-GSBS posts that have suddenly cropped up got me thinking.

Does anyone know the criteria or number for selection of the people that get to take the med/dent classes (specifically the med)? It's a major factor in my selection of school and I realized I didn't know much about the process

Robflanker, 15 students are allowed to take the dent physiology class.dental histology 10 people.

I got my acceptance this pat friday. 😀

Does anyone know when class registration begins? I believe we talk to them about it after orientation, but if anyone knows more. ?

Robflanker- didn t realize your premed- for your classes, go to the course schedule for Fall 2009, and it'll tell you. Not sure which classes specifically your taling about but for Pathology, you need instructor permission. I hope it helps
