UMDNJSOM Class of 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
congrats slice
maybe you will be joining or class shortly. I have a non medical question. I am producing a benefit shoe to raise money for SIDS and we are short $1000 🙁 anyone have any suggestions how i can find this last bit of money so this show can be a success.

ussdfiant-thanks for the reply, it was really bugging me.

Doc Blondie-- maybe you can go to your neighborhood Walmart and ask them for a contribution-they give money every month to charitable causes.
or you can try other big corporations-(except enron 😉 ). just call them up and see what they say--i've only tried walmart, office depot, home depot etc. for door prizes for a university function, so i don't have much experience to relate to you, but i just went there and asked them, and they gave it. Last year, our walmart donated a total of 57000 dollars in charity, i'm sure they could find 1000 for a charity shoe.
i've never tried this, but call microsoft up and explain the situation, and ask if Bill Gates is interested (won't hurt), and supposedly, according to one magazine I read, he responds personally to all his email (i don't know his email address)
or try to make everyone on SDN give you a dollar in the Lounge 😉 , who knows, with a legitimate address to send the money to (e.g. not a personal address), you might get a lot--i think there are more than 1000 people on here--i may be wrong.

anyway, good luck for your good cause. 😀 😀 🙂

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try them and keep you all updated on my show. Be safe everyone. 🙂 🙂 😎

Does anyone know if most first year students have roomates?

It's probably 50/50. Depends if you can afford to live by yourself. Really, housing isn't that expensive around here, depending of course where you are.

anxiously awaiting response from SOM!

Any more acceptances? I am SOOOOOO ready to start school that I am about to bust. It is damn near impossible to concentrate on my work (in the financial services department of an insurance company, BIG fun here). Somebody, tell me something new and exciting about the class of 2006 to keep me going. The only thing I have to look forward to so far is April 5 when I can meet some of you guys!

Well, i had myself a bit of a situation over the last couple of days. I had been accepted to NYCOM and they wanted a $500 non-refundable deposit by Feb. 20th to reserve my spot there. I really want to go to SOM and the committee won't make a decision on my application until Feb. 19th. I really didn't want to waste $500 at this point, that would hurt. So I emailed the admissions office at SOM about my situation earlier in the week and inquired if I could be notified immediately about the decision. Today I recieved and email back and they said that my app. was given the highest rating as excellent and they unofficially advised that I save my money. The people over there are so great, they saved me some dough and gave me some relief. Just waiting on the official word in a week.

I definitely hear ya USSDEFIANT, I am excited and anxious about getting started. I feel like my last undergrad. semester is dragging on, but we'll be nose deep in books and notes in no time.

How is the dating life in the area? Just wondering.... Are there any eligible and desirable bachelors? What do you guys think? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Current students, is it necessary to have a computer during the 1st year. All replies greatly appreciated.

Nope, we don't need to own a computer. There are plenty of computers in the library and the 24-hour computer labs, so if you want to check your e-mail at 3am, you're all set.

The only reason it's nice to own a computer (aside from being able to check e-mail at home) is for printing out attachments and the like- some professors send us lectures notes via e-mail, and the school is going to start charging us to print pretty soon. (I just hope that they'll hold off until the end of the semester!)

Oh- as regards the dating situation... um, I don't know. (Now that's a useful comment. 🙂 ) My college boyfriend is conveniently located across the river at Penn, so it's not something that I've really paid attention to. Lots of people started school with significant others, and some people date within the class/school. That said, this is a very residential area, and I don't know how conducive that is to dating. I suppose that there are always options, if you know where to look. (I don't, but that's a different story.)

What is the price of the 5 week summer session? Does it include Biochem?
I am a Voorhees girl (very local) starting at UMDNJSOM in the fall. If anyone has questions about the area I'd be glad to help.

I am learning how to navagate this site and just came upon those apartment questions. I'd seriously consider staying away from Woodmere! Robin Hill is pretty crappy as well. Fountain view is okay but the morning rush hour to SOM will be bad. I know the Voorhees area is a bit more expensive but you do get what you pay for. The Village and Echelon Glen (the newer area) are pretty decent and extremely close to school. In April or March... when you see these places it will be daytime and they'll all look nice. BE CAREFUL before you sign anything and seek advice from people who know this area.

I'm now officially accepted to UMDNJSOM.
 The past four weeks seemed to go by at a snails pace as I waited for a response. Now I can think about housing and other good stuff.

Slice,

Congratulations! That is great news! At least there will be one person in our class that I can reminisce with about West Philly! Now the real wait (until classes start) begins. Again, congrats!

hey USS,

I can reminisce and tell you about the semi-auto weapons being fired up the street, the van blowing up across the street from me, the guy eating out of my garbage can, and the homeless guys in Clark Park. (I feel bad for these guys) West Philly has definitely helped me to to develop some character but I feel like I'm ready to move on.
Not to dump on West Philly, I have had a lot of good times here.

Hey Slice,

Curious question... You mentioned that your application received an excellent mark and then followed up with an acceptance. Congrats.

So I'm curious... What was your application like in terms of GPA, MCAT, etc... I apologize for being nosey, but I'm someone who always ends up on the waitlist, and I am always looking for a gauge to get to that next level.

If you would like, just drop me a private message via the SDN or post here.

Would be a big help, and again... Congrats!

Well my numbers are definitely not perfect.
GPA: 3.7 (3.0 my freshmen year)

MCAT: mid twenties, low on the verbal (my major weakness)

Lots of EC's: Shadowed physician, volunteer in ER, adult literacy tutor, teaching assistant, undrgrad. genetics research

Plus personal experiences and I think I did well on the interview. I think my EC's, interview, and other experiences helped to more than make up for low verbal score. Numbers aren't the most important factor.

WUAS hang in there, if you want something bad enough you'll achieve it.

It feels good being able to put that UMDNJ-SOM 2006 tag at the bottom of the posts.

Congrats, SliceOheaven (and everyone else who's been accepted), and good luck to those who are still waiting. See you all around next year! 🙂

Paige (who still remembers the thrill of adding the "UMDNJ-SOM" tag to her signature... um, close to two and a half years ago... wow)

What are some of the clinical affiliations that UMDNJ-SOM has???....Are there any in northern NJ??

We definitely have northern NJ affiliations. I think our Jersey City hospital is St. Francis, but I could be wrong about the name. It exists, though. Also, we can do our family practice rotation almost anywhere in the state- there are quite a few northern and central (as well as southern and western) NJ practices that take in students.

Does anyone know when orientation is?

The White Coat Ceremony is (as far as I know) the last Sunday in July, and orientation starts the next day. Classes begin on the Monday after that.

Hi USSDFIANT,
I think I read somewhere within the forums that you've received a decent scholarship for the fall (umdnjsom). If you don't mind...what kind? How did you apply? What are the requirements? I am also going to umd in the fall and am looking for $$$$$. Thanks, smedly

Does anyone know when is the deadline for sending in the FAFSA for this school???

Hey everyone.
I haven't been around for a while because i have been sick. 🙁 It seems like april is taking forever to get here. I can't wait to meet everyone. I wish july was here. I feel like the weeks at work just drag.
i know what you mean about putting UMDNJ-SOM 2006 after your name. I just love being able to tell everyone i am in school.
Well, just wanted to say hi. I know i am a little late but congrats slice to getting in.
Talk to you all soon
😀 Be safe. 🙂 🙂

thanks Doc Blondie,
I know how you feel, it just seems like time is going by so slow. I can't wait to meet some classmates in April.

I don't if I'm jumping the gun, but I'm starting to check out some apartments this friday. (maybe I just have too much free time, only carrying 12 credits this semester)

I have been checking out apartments since i got accepted. I hate it because i have found nothing yet. I am starting to get worried that i will be living in a cardboard box outside school. But maybe you will have better luck then i have had. 🙂

congrats, sliceOheaven on your acceptance. sorry i'm a little late. i've been having internet troubles 😛

••••this is what i did(and i am doing).
website: apartmentguide.com ; apartments.com
u can find pics and info on these websites for most of the apts.

prices i found (roughly)
for i bedroom, prices start at 400 (in stratford) and go to well over a thousand (in cherry hill). the average price is probably around 4 - 700 dollars.

for a 2 bedroom apt, prices range from abour 5 - 650 (in stratford and lindenwold) and go up from there. avg. ($5-900)

i also found that you have to follow up (a LOT) with the apartment people after sending in your applications. lets just say that apartment managers are very busy people

hope this info helps.

I got an interesting call from a 3rd year tonight. It was a call to see if I was coming on 4/5 and to answer any questions that I might have. We talked for about an hour about all sorts of things SOM related. He is my age (we are both 31) so we also talked about med school and family life. It felt good to talk to someone who has actually completed 3/4 of med school. I don't know if others will get similar call but it just energized me for what is to come (and is not coming soon enough!)

I just haven't found what i have been looking for. But i am probably too picky. My dad is helping pay for my apartment, so he outs in his opinion also which doesnt help.

I wish someone called me. that would be nice. It just seems like july is so far away. I mean april 5th is far enough. 😎

maybe after april 5th we can all keep in contact and get together that way maybe we will get to july faster. 😛

oh well i hope everyone is doing well. 🙂

see you all in 27 days

Hey, guys I have been searching for an apartment whole day today. All the places I have been to, according to the places that fit my budget, all the places seem inhabitable. I esp. liked Woodmere and Lindonwold/Pine Hill gardens. Other places along the highway/expressway were too loud. I was trying to minimize the housing cost, and those places are where I ended up, about $410 for a studio and 500-600 for 1 room apartments.
But I think I read from this thread before that Woodmere had some flood problems, is that why this place is the cheapeast, even with such an awesome proximity to school. I almost signed the contract for Woodmere, but for 100$ more, you can get an amazing apt in Pine Hill, which is about 5minutes drive (2-3miles from school). So I'm stuck with no place to live. Please someone, tell me which place is decent. Any current med students or grads with any advice/recommendation?

Hi everybody!

Mr. MD or DO,
•••quote:••• But I think I read from this thread before that Woodmere had some flood problems, ••••FYI i called woodmere and they said that the flooding problem was this: last year, a pole got stuck in the drain and flooded one apartment, which they said they redid. take that for what it's worth. btw, how does woodmere look. does it look "run down?"

take care everybody.

The cost of living here is somewhat high... it's not NY high, but it's high. YOU WILL NOT find a decent 1 bedroom apartment for $500 a month!!!! I have lived here for 24 years and I know the area well enough to warn you about certain places. In my opinion, peace of mind is worth more than money...we're all taking out loans anyway. Just pay the extra $200-300 monthly and be happy with where you live.

I would avoid the Lindenwold, Clementon and Pine Hill areas!!
Some areas in Blackwood are okay
Voorhees and Cherry Hill are a safe bet

Applicant 2002, Woodmere does look a bit run down, but i heard most students use the room just to sleep in, and not much else. They said most students live in a studio for that reason. And regarding the post by Smedly, can you give me some reasons why we should avoid clementon, lindenwold, pine hill areas? And don't you think cherry hill and voorhees are too far away from school besides costs? I try to minimize driving time, and those places look very distant from school on the map. And No furniture! I was actually very shocked to find that all the housing don't come furnished. How are we supposed to move all our funiture? (rental seems absurd).

I live 5 minutes from school, in Voorhees. The apartments I would recommend are also only 5 minutes from school. The apartments in Cherry Hill are a bit further, maybe 20 minutes, and a bit more $. The apartments don't come furnished because they are not student housing. Have you spoken to any students who actually live in Woodmere?
Besides the physical apperance of the places I said to avoid there's also crime rates to be considered. I have had personal experience with apartments in Lindenwold....flashing police lights were common sight, loud parties on any given night, kids running wild and all the drama that comes with domestic abuse from 2 doors down. This provided constant entertainment but I can't imagine dealing with it while getting through med school. This was Lindenwold...Clementon is worse. If this type of environment doesn't trouble you... then find the cheapest deal. Most of the apartments within the $500 range are like this.

So smedley,

What would be your housing recommendations in a 5-10 minute radius from school? Also, did you get my PM? If not, check your profile.

I personally don't feel that the crime rates in the areas anywhere near the med school are anything to worry about, at least compared to where I live now (west philly). It's like comparing a crack house to a candy shop. I look forward to moving to the stratford area.

I'll be moving to the Stratford area by mid May. I'd love to hang with and get to know some of my classmates before orientation, if any of you guys will be around before we start school.

USS,
I didn't get the PM. I've had some serious computer problems this week and had to re-register with SDN ..... maybe it got lost in the change. If you wouldn't mind answering my FA questions again I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
Regarding housing... as a general rule, when facing the front of the school look to your left for a place to live. Echelon Glenn and The Village are the two affordable places I'd recommend. Expect to pay $700-850 for a decent place to live. They are both a few traffic lights away from school...very close. Fountainview is okay ( my sister lived there) it's located near a community college so some students do live there. It's cheaper than the Voorhees area. During rush hour it would be about 20-25 min commute to school.
I am very partial to the Voorhees apartments I'll continue to recommend them above all others.
Renting part of a house sounds like a good option, I think I read that somewhere here..but I know nothing about that.

Slice,

I am also looking to move at the end of May/ beginning of June so that I will be moved in for summer classes starting 6/24. One of the things that I am most worried about when it comes to finding a place to live is my horrendous credit. I am hoping that places that rent to students will accept a larger security deposit in lieu of good credit. Any current students have bad credit but were still able to secure something decent?

ussdfiant,

Do classes start 6/24?? or is that the start of the summer program?

Does anyone know when orientation is and the first day of classes??

hey
Does any know anything about kenwood drive in sicklerville, nj ? Some one told me it was a good place and someone else told me it was bad. what are your thoughts?

I am all up for hanging out in may when people move down. I live an hour away but i would make the drive. Once (and if-hopefully) i find a place i'll be around a lot more. But i think its a great idea to start to get to know each other...it will make the transition easier for all of us.

So, anyone let me know what you think about that area

🙂 🙂 🙂 😎 😎 😎

USSD,
Thanks for sending it again. I tried to send one back but I'm not sure it worked. When I hit the button to send it , it read something like unable to post topic...bla bla. I am not very computer savvy. Infact, I am amazed that I found the SDN. Let me know if you received anything.

Doc,
There are parts of Sicklerville that are nice and parts that are far from nice. I am not to sure about Kenwood dr. Have you seen it? I do know that it's about a 25 minute drive to school from there. And that's without rush hour traffic....but we might be in class before rush hour begins so that may not be a factor.
