I'm not going to Maine, but congratulations anyway!!!

congratulations on your acceptance!!! have fun study and try not to stresssssssss!!!!!!

I was recently accepted. UNECOM was my 1st choice and I'll be going for sure.
In the meantime, I have a severe case of senioritis.

nice to know i'll have some company next year. not too many other unecom posts yet (though i suppose a bunch of people haven't heard / haven't decided). i'm matt from rhode island. graduated in 2002 but i can relate to the senoritis (an acute condition effecting the brain's ability to process work). anyway, thanks for the reply. hope to get to know you in the months ahead.

matt.

I am going to UNE also! It was my first choice. Can't wait to start.

Is there a clinical correllary to senioritis in the workplace?? Perhaps it is called "I'm outa hereitis?" Or maybe its called, "You can't tell me what to do anymore in 8 monthsitis."

Does anyone have any other afflictions?

Just kidding of course. I love my job, but can't wait to start school and meet everyone.

I love this senioritis. I have been accepted to UNE and will be moving there in July. I am from Utah and don't know if I will be able to get back out there to find housing for me and the wife. How long can you live on the beach before it gets too unbearably cold in Maine? What is everyone doing to celebrate before we have to start hitting the books next year? I am going to fish and camp every place between Utah and Maine that I can get to.

See you guys next fall! Just got my acceptance through email from Lisa yesterday! YAY!!!

Congratulations everyone!! Does anyone have any idea on the housing there in Biddeford? Where is everyone going to live? Being that I am from a long ways away from Maine any help I can get on this would be very much appreciated.

Some may disagree, but if I were to go to UNE, I'd live in Portland. I've been to Maine quite a bit and Portland is not a bad town, not the best town, but if you're used to city life, it's all they have to offer. You can have Indian food there, mexican, good Italian and there are also a couple of notable restaraunts like Fore Street and Back Bay Grill. They have a night life too. So, I don't that this will be a bad choice for you. Biddeford is sad, from what I've heard.

So, drive the 30 minutes from Portland.

i've also heard that biddeford (the "biddo") isn't very impressive. when i interviewed, i stayed the night with some students in kennebunk(?). tr?s bien! it's probably "hit or miss." correct me if i'm wrong, i think unecom will be sending out info on how to obtain accomodations.

Don't go knockin Biddeford! : )

I lived in Maine for 4 years as an undergrad, so I am definitely biased. BUT... there are many great great places to live along the southern coast of Maine. You can live near the ocean.... plus rents are very reasonable.

There aren't any major cities in Maine but Portland is really nice. Not sure I would want to spend and hour commuting everyday to Portland, when I am going to be busy and tired. Just a thought.

As for the housing situation when you first arrive....I was told that many second years (and first years for that matter) are very helpful to their classmates who haven't found housing yet. I hope to have a place in mid-July... so if I can be of help to anyone moving from far away, while they are looking for a place of their own, please let me know.

I started up a list because I am also going to UNE! Can't wait to see you all!!!!

I understand what everyone is saying, but, to me, most of maine is so dang rural, disconnected. You can't even get a good pizza up there. So, Portland seemed like the only place to stay sane. I'm not sure why it would take an hour to do the drive.

I just went to mapquest and here are the results.

Biddeford, ME

Portland, ME

Total Distance: 18.09 miles
Total Estimated Time: 22 minutes

So, I think a reasonable estimation will be 30 to 40 minutes. And the contruction can't last forever, I think. THere must be an end to the work being done. That's not bad for sanity. Okay, I'm joking a bit, but I've heard that Biddeford was sort of sad. If there is redemption for Biddeford, please tell me. I know that medical school is about studying and doing the work, but you also want to be in an environment that enables you to feel connected, alive. I'm from NYC, so a place like that would kill me. Can you even get the Times there? A thin crust pizza? A real bagel?

I live in the West End in Portland. It takes me about 35 minutes to get to school and there isn't any major construction that gets in the way right now. There's construction down near the Biddeford exit, but naturally you get off at the Saco exit unless you enjoy longcuts.

I agree with the last post, I can get from UNE's campus all the way to my fiancee's parent's house in Auburn in a little over an hour. I'm probably going to live in South Portland/Scarborough so my now fiancee/then wife can get a job up there? Any ideas where to live in that area? 😀

I commuted to UNE from Yarmouth during all of first year, and it took me 45 minutes door to door. I later moved to POrtland 2nd year and it took 35 minutes. It NEVER took me an hour to get to school, construction or not. EVER.

There are good places to study in Portland. It depends on what kind of environment you like. You can study at the UNE library in Westbrook, the USM library, or the law library on the USM campus. If you don't like libraries, there are about 5 coffee shops in the Old Port, 2 of which I studied at frequently (Starbucks and Java net). Some of my other friends who lived here studied at a new Starbucks near the mall by Target. There are also good places to study outdoors, namely Deering Oaks park, and in Cape Elizabeth there's plenty of land around Fort Williams and Two Lights State park to throw down a blanket and study. There's a Borders near the mall, which is a little loud, but if you study with headphones the noise isn't a big deal. Some people studied there. Or you can just stay at school. As for studying past 10pm somewhere other than your house on a weeknight in Portland, no, there isn't really anywhere I know of. The public library is good too, if you go in the "Portland Room".

If anyone has any other questions about UNE or Portland, you can PM me. I don't get on here that much, so it may be awhile before I can get back to you, so anything pressing you should probably post. Good luck to you all!

Congatulations on your acceptances!

I live in Portland and I drive to UNECOM - It takes me 25-35 minutes.

7+ hours a week is a long time to spend in the car.

On the up side, I usually stay at school and study until 10PM.

If I lived closer, I would probably go home right after school where I would probably goof off for an even greater ammount of time.

2-3 times I have stayed with friends on days when I have had 7AM exams.

Living in Portland, I am a bit outside the UNECOM party scene (such as it is) but I have a life outside of school.

For me, it is not a big deal.

Besides, Mainers, on average, have the longest commutes any state in the nation.

Does anyone plan on living close enough to campus to walk to school? I know that the housing oppurtunities are not that great on campus, especially for families, but are there any good apartment complexes that would allow my wife and I to have only one car and I can walk to school?
I know that it gets to be bad during the winters, but walking uphill both ways through the blizzards to get to school will make me tough, right?
If we have keep two cars we will, but making the move out with only one car would be much nicer. Thanks for any help.

Dryfly,

What about buying a car when you get to maine? There's a lot of cars places around and the prices are reasonable. check out www.journaltribune.com --> also good for apartments(newspaper in Biddeford). Or the paper in portland (don't know what it is off hand though). Hope this helps.

I am pretty sure there is no on campus housing for any of the medical students if Im not mistaken.

I definitly agree about getting a car when you get out here if it's not too much of a hassle. The prices are definitly fairly reasonable and its a good thing to have both for the nasty days when walking might not be a great idea.

i was accepted in september...has anyone else heard anything back from UNE since the acceptance letter? I plan on sending in the deposit in the next few days.

I think I will start looking for a place to live in after winter break. Hopefully I can find something decent close to the school.

If any current UNECOM students are reading this, do you feel that you are competitive for allopathic residencies when you graduate? I am still on the fence between UNECOM and NYCOM - allthough I loved everything about UNECOM, the match list at NYCOM is very impressive.

I havent heard anything since the acceptance letter either.

UNECOM wrote me a letter after they received my deposit in October. They also asked me to confirm my address for future mailings.

hello all. Congrats on you guy's acceptance. Now comes the housing woes. It really depends on what you want. I used to commute to grad school 45 minutes each way each day, so i had my fill of long drives. Now i live 4 miles down the road in Biddeford. Biddeford is not as bad as everyone thinks, in my opinion. It's far from glamorous, but it's livable and cheaper. Saco is right across the river and is nice, and Kennebunkport isn't too far either. Portland is more expensive (depending where you're from) and about 30 minutes away, but it is nice to be in a city, although everything pretty much closes by 9 or 10. Many people also found a place to crash until the tourist season was over and decided to rent beach houses/cottages close to the water for cheap, although it gets cold pretty much by the end of october or so. Find out what makes you happy and what you're comfortable with, look around, see what fits you. Good luck with housing and congrats on getting in.

Hello everyone! I am flying up to Maine from Florida this Friday, Dec. 5th for my UNECOM interview! I am really excited, but nervous at the same time. Can anyone give me any insight as to what the interview was like? Also, how cold is it up there? Does anyone know of any good places to eat? I hope it all goes well and they will want me!

kmwmorris- hopefully UNECOM class of 2008

hi,

I'm from Portland. I was raised in Maine and I know the area. I just got my acceptance last week. They'll let you know in just a few days after your interview.

I know lots of good places to eat in Portland. Biddeford is hurting when it comes to getting good food, fine dining and subs and pizza too.

The interview was easy, no stress. I got there at 8:00. We were met by M1 students. We then we to the primary lecteur hall and got a brief overview about UNECOM. Then at 9:00 I was brought in for my interview. The interview was just about getting to know me. They knew my application well. They asked me to clarify some specifics about my application. They also asked me about why I want to attend UNE and why I want to be an Ostopathic doctor, also why a doctor in general. You'll interview with a faculty member and an M2.

Honestly, don't worry. It's going to go well.

Email me if you have a more specific questions. You can email me at [email protected]

housing issues aside...the real question remains, how cold is it right now? are we talking arctic? i know i'm packing an extra pair of mittens.

matt.

It's December. The temperature is all over the place. Luckily, the water, costal living, has a way of moderating temperatures. UNE is right on the water. Cool summers and winters that you can manage.

The temperatures this month have been odd. We've had a couple of spring like days, 40's, maybe even a 50. And some frigid days in the 20s. This week looks like 30's for highs. April through October is nice.

It's not that bad. And summers make it worth it all. And in July and August we do hit 90's occassionally, but mostly upper 70's at the peak of the summer.

Hi all,
I've been accepted to UNECOM and *think* it's where I'm
going. I'm a little bit leery of moving around for the rotations.
Does anyone have any thoughts on years 3 & 4?

I Have actually heard good things about moving for rotations. One of the DO's I worked with enjoyed it because he got to see the way different facilities worked and got to see what he liked and what he didn't. I tend to agree with this because then you can have a variety of places to expereince so you can better choose what environment fits you best.

Hi all,

I've got another question. I paid my deposit of $500 by
December 15th, and have the additional deposit of $1000
coming up this month. Does anyone have any idea how
flexible the admissions office is about the due date of that
money? I don't exactly have it right now but could ask my
parents for a loan if I have to. Arg!!!

Thanks!

Hello everyone. I am also excited to be joining you all in Maine this fall. 🙂

In terms of the $1000 deposit, I am pretty sure we have 60 days after they receive our $500. I don't think that they give extensions on that, but it never hurts to call financial aid and ask what your options are.

I started making some calls on housing in the biddeo/saco area this past week while on christmas break. Most private landlord's aren't going to know what they have available till the end of february. They said anything they had now, they'd want to get filled before the any COM students would move in. So, I'd say wait for a month or so, then start calling. Just an idea though. See you guys next fall!

I also found some owners that might be willing to hold units for UNECOMers or who have started polling to find out who is leaving so they can start drawing up plans. I don't think it's too early now. Some of the units that are vacating earlier might need a deposit to hold it but other than that I woudl say definitly go for it. THe worst that can happened is they say they won't hold anything for you
