Where is everyone????

BTW, did anyone get a phone call from UNECOM today. A student... I think from COM. I heard a message today when I got home. I am guessing this is our orientation leaders. Anyone...

Yeah I got a call from Christina Bordeau, last night and I guess she'll be my orientation leader.

Same here. I got a message and an e-mail. . . looks like the ball is rolling 😉 .

Ditto...I received a call Tuesday, and an e-mail yesterday. I am not living at home now (I'm at school), and I got an e-mail transcript of the phone call from my mother, which was rather interesting....

Anyhow, that start date of orientation is drawing nearer and nearer...looking forward to meeting you all!

Ryan.

hey everybody,

i got the email and postcard from orientation leader, but no phone call. i believe immunization requirements will be in the packet. it's a little odd that we have not received them yet seeing that the hepB sequence takes 6 months to complete. And I assume we will have to have this vaccine.... most of you have probably already had it but some of the older students might not have. i just wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone had comments/insight into the requirements. i guess my question is, are there other sequences that take a while to complete, and are required for healthcare providers, that i don't know about?

cheers

Got my packet today.

Dang. I have to go get every titer out there. I don't even have records of my hep B series, it was so long ago.

The other thing I was looking at: the foundations of doctoring questionnaire. "do you have any health conditions [etc] that you could share?" Ok. Could? Sure. Want to? Well, I'm pretty darn shy about that stuff. Would it be so bad for me to list all the crap I've been through and say that perhaps I wouldn't want to share?

Everybody should have gotten a phone call by now. The people calling are OLs, but not necessarily YOUR OLs. There are packets coming, they were mailed the 18th. As for the FOD survey, don't feel like you HAVE to share. If you're shy about it then it's perfectly fine to stay shy.

Still got that apartment for rent too. . . 450, all inclusive . . .

Yay!
Decided to Cross into the Blue and stay with my prior branch of service. ie: US Air Force HPSP.
Rec'd a v-mail from a Ms. Tilford. Also, rec'd my excellent packet today with the wicked sweet Biddo/Saco map and all the fun paperwork to fill out.
Now, just need to set up an appointment with my doc...
(turn and cough)

Hey! I just noticed that I didn't get the computer requirements in my packet. Anybody wanna share so I can go looking (and probably dreaming)?

hahaha I got an extra computer requirement, but no equipment list 🙁

yes they do require PDA,

I think the 2000.00 covers both laptop and PDA.

The tablets PC are nice, however, I have heard a lot of bad things about them in regards to medical profession use. Most likely you won't able to lugg your tablet PC around (or even want to), the hand writing function on the tablet PC you can also get from a nice PDA which you can carry around with you all the time. As for typing, there are bluetooth wireless keyboard for PDA so you can type on the PDA , surfe the net (with 802.11b wireless build-in) finally you'll still have your regular laptop/desktop (which is more powerful) to sync your PDA to. In real life use, laptop/PDA combination is probably more versatile than an expensive tablet PC alone.

the Computer requirements are:

P4, or P-M (centrino), or Duo Core at 1.6ghz or above.
at least 512MB ram, 1GB preferred
at least 30 GB hard drive, (60GB recommended)
must have 802.11b but 802.11b/g is preferred for wireless networking
must have DVD/CD-RW combo drive, DVD-RW optional
must have ethernet port
must have at least 32MB of vram for graphics card
must have minimum resolution for LCD to display 1280x1024 up to 1600x1200 (SXGA,WSXGA,or WUXGA) NO XGA or VGA
must have Windows XP Professional SP2 (NO Windows XP Home edition because bad for networking configuration)
USB flash memory key is recommended
McAfee 8.x virus software (REQUIRED and can be d/l from UNE, i guess PM me for this).

The rest of it are just some software addon which you can probably wait until school starts.

Is anyone going on that rafting trip the week before orientation starts?? I think it sounds like a fun time and a good way to meet more people form our class. Any takers??

I'm definitely going, but I need to see if I'll have enough money first.

I knew you'd say that. 🙂 I was thinking more of a tablet. (sorry) But don't they also require a PDA?
IMO, I'd wait on getting a new PDA... if you already have one, that's fine, but all you'll really use it for is address book and calendar. you probably won't really need a good one to handle all the big programs till 3rd year. (although you could make an argument for needing one during 2nd year systems, but that's even pushing it I feel), just a laptop will be fine for now. *at least this is my experience.* 🙂

Cool! That means I can keep using my trusty 5+ year old palm vx
🙂

Well, any new computer will have to wait until I get my FA $$ anyway. *sigh* moving is SO expensive.

As for the PDA, I saw Motion's new little itty bitty tablet that I would really truly love to have. Full tablet capabilities in something the size of a paperback. Hoping prices on that come down in the next two years so I can get one in second year. I have an old PDA that I can use until then.

I didn't get the equipment list either - I think I recall reading that won't be coming until later.

And as for the rafting trip - it doesn't say it includes children. If it did, that would unfortunately be $400 (ouch!). If it doesn't, I don't generally go do stuff without my kids (except work and school of course) and husband. So I guess my answer will have to be "no".

Anyone else bringing an entire family with them? Or will I be the Mom of the group? 🙂

Seriously though,
Since Keys put up the PC requirements I'll put up the Mac requirements just for fun:
Mac Laptop with CD-RW/DVD drive (DVD-RW opt.)
1.33 GHz G4 processor (minimum)
512MB RAM (min) 1GB (recommended)
Mac OSX 10.2 or higher (10.4 is the current OSX on Mac systems since last spring)
30GB Hard Disk drive (internal storage)
USB memory stick (these are dirt cheap now)
Built in wireless is Standard on all Apple systems now. Its called Airport Extreme. Also, Bluetooth comes standard with all Apple systems.
Microsoft Office for Mac Academic version is $149 (dirt cheap considering the non-student/teacher version is $399) Also, it allows for 3 full installs so, if you wanna be thrifty and hook a fellow Mac user up...wait, I can't say anymore...Big Brother Bill might be watching...
Anti-Virus: NOT Necessary since Mac's are not susceptible to virus and spyware (Personal experience: I've been a Mac user for over 5 years now, I've never ever dealt with any trojans, worms, spyware, or viruses.)
If anyone has any questions feel free to contact me about Apple support, Apple systems old and new. Go to the Apple Education Store
Oh, and if you get a new Mac you get a $100 rebate for a printer therefore, if you get a $99 printer (the amount you pay at checkout) you'll get it free in the end 😀

hey everyone,

I just signed up for this forum. I was accepted back in October, and will be attending UNECOM. I saw a list was starting up, so i thought i'd join. I'm 22 from Michigan.

I won't be going on the rafting trip (not really my thing). But look forward to seeing all of you at orientation.

Congrats and welcome to the site.

Please add yourself to the class list. Also ask us, if you don't already know about pipeline.

I added myself to the MAP, anything else I need to do. I'm waiting on Pipeline until I get my package, should be coming in today, won't be home to get it until Early May.

Wook, alas no. But I am hoping for the best. I will either be a 2010er or a 2011er. I prefer 2010 just cause it sounds better, not to mention the cool people I have met here. Hopefully will find out sometime in the next few weeks. Take care.

Rob: I'm still rooting for you to be part of the class of 2010!!

Yeah so I guess I should have looked at that e-mail... 🙄
Thanks for that primer. I printed it out.
Bill, check your e-mail from the Tracie lady.

No OoMS... I did not get an email from Tracy... nor did I get a reply from YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUu.

Are you going to make it to Biddeford this coming week or too far a drive for you?

NOT GOOD. That means Oilers Lost... HMMMMMmmm This year the stanley cup is comming back here. Either Senators or Habs or Flames. Capeesh 😱

ShyRem, I think I spoke to you the other day. My name is Stephanie and I'm a 1st yr as well as an OL. As for a PDA, you are not required to have one for the yrs 1 and 2 but I have heard them to be quite handy for clinicals so don't worry about that. Also I believe your FA will reflect an alloted $2g for a laptop purchase. Atleast that's what I have been told by my friends...unfortunately military scholarships don't cover that. Damn!
Equipment list will be coming in the mail...most of the stuff you don't really need except a cardiac III stethescope which I recommend buying online. The school book store jacks the price up to more than double what they really cost.

Has anyone not gotten their package from UNECOM?

I am still waiting on mine. I received an email, and a call, but no package!
No real rush, I just wanted to make sure it didn't get lost.

Dear All,

Munchi84 and I, and maybe a few others are going to meet up for breakfast on the 28th, maybe a local can recommend a good place. ANYONE ELSE INTERESTED.

Thanks
Docb

Hey all. I guess I should start looking for a roommate. I will be taking over an apartment currently inhabited by my friend Tanya who is a second year student. It is located at 5 Lester Orcutt Boulevard, Biddeford Pool. $1000 a month which includes heat and water. Tanya says that she pays around 30 for electric a month. Great view of the water from the living room window, 2 bedrooms and one room that could be a bedroom but is kind of small. It comes with a washer but no dryer for some reason. Very cute place and good location. If anyone is interested just let me know! 🙂

I posted it on pipeline.

If any local 1st or 2nd MS know of a good place to meet up, or willing to join us, feel free to post.

I would also add that if they still require an ophthalmoscope to buy the cheapest one. With my class they gave us the option of buying a "regular" ophthalmoscope or the panophthalmoscope. The panophthalmoscope cost about 5X more than the regular. Given that I did not use it in 3rd or 4th year, it was a waste of money. In your 3rd and 4th years, the places that you are doing your rotations will have the otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes.

if you're looking for breakfast, All-Day Breakfast - it's a cheap (but good!) little diner type place. In the same plaza as Staples, Smitty's Cinema, 99... on the left side as you head toward school from Biddo turnpike exit.

What time are you guys meeting up? I will be in the area, and I don't have any wedding things to do until the afternoon (my friend isn't supposed to know I am there yet 🙂). Let me know, it'd be fun.

i received everything except the phone call. is it critical that i do? i will call une and let them know that i haven't spoken to an OL if it is.

Nah...its all good. The important stuff is in the packet. The phone calls were just to say "Hi" and ask about any immediate questions as well as forewarn us of the impending onslaught of mailings. 😀
Plus, the really cool information was the rafting trip announcement with the e-mail from the OL's.
BTW:
Count me in for the rafting trip!!
