Sounds like a plan. Let me know what days to ask off from work. I'll hook you up with a sweet iPod. 👍 😀

Steve what state do you live in??

I will most likely be leaving out of Montreal.

We are looking at about 1000$Can... meaning 850$US All inclusive and I am trying to find an Adult Only Package (18 Years+++) I figure it is my first trip, I might as well enjoy it without being stuck with a bunch of families.

What do you think? Or check if there are any interesting/cheap packages from where you live. If worth it we can drive down.

I live near Albany, NY. Cuba...from the US...no dice. Embargo or something like that. to get to Cuba from North America one either has to fly out of Mexico or Canada, or take an unchartered boat trip across the pond. A little too rich for my blood. Plus, with being down 2 cars and still having to pay towards them, I dont know when I'll have money to play with. Sigh...being grown up sucks!

It's really popular here in Miami to come by rafts from Cuba, so can always built a little canoe and go the opposite way (okay, don't want to offend anyone, but since I am from Miami that should be less flaming)

Sorry to hear about your car issues, Steve. Depending on how you are feeling, it's either bad luck (damaged car"s") or good luck (you're alive!!).

Hello, for all of you chronological accountants, I will be 41 when we start the first day of classes. I hope my walker and feeding tubes fit in the classroom, and can my great great grandchildren come visit?.....

On a more serious note, has anyone started the financial aid process? I'm hoping we can share info about comparable unsecured loan rates, stafford loans, yada yada yada... I am meeting with a couple ER attendings at MMC and one of the Med control docs to talk about how they financed med school and how long it took to repay. I'll keep you informed.

Is someone an IPOD sales rep? If so how about a group sales rate pitch and maybe we can throw one of our own some commissions; We may have to buy them anyway. Same idea for computers, if we can help each other sock some funds away maybe we should...

And finally.. I am a working Paramedic in Maine, so if you have qusetions in that baliwick, i.e, CPR classes or ACLS, let me know, while I may not be able to answer them, I know a lot of really talented people who can.

Best wishes. 😉

I work for Apple Computers at a local retail store. If you go to UNECOM pricing
click on Accept you'll be taken to a website with education discount pricing. I do not work for commission, none of us at Apple do so, I'm not trying to pressure anyone into a purchase. Basic laptops for everyday use and school use would be the iBooks. Higher end laptops are the Powerbooks and the new MacBook Pro. I'm currently using a 20" iMac (power PC chip not the new intel chip) and love it. I'm looking to pick up a 14" iBook before I leave my job this summer to move up north. Group pricing is tricky. Someone would have to be a rep for the school or our class and have a lump sum of money to get a good deal. I'd be more than happy to organize it. If anyone is seriously considering a new computer and is into a Mac or willing to switch PM me and I'll be more than happy to help and figure out the best solution for you. Now, time to cease and desist my sales pitch. Peace!

Hi,
My fiancee and I (we're both 1st yrs.) have Macs and love them. There are a few glitches with web CT but they're being fixed ( I just circumvent them by using a different browser..Firefox instead of Safari). Fortunately, those of us using Macs have been totally immune to some of the nasty spyware and viruses that have been going around (UNECOM pipeline has listed quite a few warnings for people using windows this yr). All 1st yrs. are budgeted for a new computer and I highly recommend Mac..I switched from Dell when I started UNECOM and will never go back..just my 2c.

Also, I reroute my email through thunderbird because the web-based pipeline email is pretty awful (luckily.. they're phasing it out for another program next year). Have a good evening!

PS. Don't buy your med equipment from the bookstore, also buy the cheapest opthamascope you can!
PPS. Iverson's Guide to getting a Residency- Highly recommended!

I like that Macs have no virus issues, but I'm really interested in looking at a tablet. Any information out there?

Thanks. Can I interest you in doing some PR for our Switcher advertising program? 😀
The fact that spyware, trojans, and viruses do no even cause a Mac to flinch like any windows based computers has switched many a Dell, Gateway and other popular PC users over to Mac. These days, I just show off what the Macs do and they sell themselves. I'm in the process of weening my wife off of her IBM to the new iMac I have so she'll use that when I use the laptop I hope to get this summer.
Tablet PCs: Shyrem, my best buddy got a Gateway from Best Buy and likes it. Its a typical windows machine so it does have some issues but nothing I've heard him complain too much about. The DO I was shadowing is using a really sweet Toshiba Satellite tablet pc at his new private practice. So, Check out that brand.

Where is the best place to buy med equipment?

fozzi, allheart.com seems to have the best prices I've seen on med equipment so far.

I have a toshiba laptop and 😍 it. But nowhere around me has tablets to play with. I even had to order my toshiba online 'cuz the selection is very limited in my town (and the next bigger town is 250 miles away). But my hubby's work uses Gateway and every single one of them (and every laptop) has problems. I've used Gateway before as well and had severe problems with their stuff. So gateway is *out*.

first of all, congrats to all incoming members of our beautiful UNECOM. this is my first post although i've been checking in on things from time to time. i hope this isn't breaking any rules, but i thought it would be helpful start a thread regarding housing options

as you're probably aware, housing is not guaranteed, nor is it on campus. however, off-campus housing is usually pretty inexpensive and often very scenic. i've lived in the area for a few years now and am currently a second-year student who owns a home in nearby saco. i'd be happy to answer any questions about housing.

check out http://www.une.edu/studentlife/housing/offcampus.asp and scroll down for rental listings -- some good finds in the surrounding areas. i have a place in Saco and am looking for two upstanding, fairly studious new med students to help share the cost. available anytime. if you have any questions, feel free to email, call, or post!

good luck!

i just got home from work and the certified letter from UNECOM had arrived and....I"M IN!! YAY i'm officially one of your classmates.

Sarah,
Congrats, I still havent heard anything let, but I hoping for the best. Does anyone think that I should give Lisa a call? Or should I just wait it out? Again, a huge congrats Sarah.

thanks. Its nice to finally feel like i'll be completely happy at a school. The other acceptances I had recieved left me with mixed emotions and doubts about the future but UNECOM is going to be great. Now the search for apartments begins....too bad classes couldnt start a few weeks later so there wasnt a time conflict with the "seasonal" rentals. Anyone know what students do for living during those few lag weeks??

Welcome aboard, Sarah!

Anyone going for the NHSC scholarship? AND... anyone else wondering where they are going to live next year!!??? Maybe I'm not busy enough at work (aka not doing anything in the lab) but I'm starting to feel nervous about the whole move/finding a apartment issue....

Have a good week everyone!

Welcome, Sarah 😳 ! Congratulations -- nice to see that our class is slowly growing 👍 !

Regards,

Ryan.

I posted this a while back, but I just thought I would bump it up so our newcomers can see.

I am looking for a roomate for med school. I have already rented a house from a woman I know through, oddly enough, a physics professor ( 👍 ) I am "best buds" with at my undergrad college, for the entire duration we are in med school (i.e, not a seasonal; rather a year round house). It is a 6 room, 2 bedroom (living room, dining, kitchen, bathroom, 2 bedrooms), with furnished basement, in a really quiet family neighborhood, 3 miles from UNECOM (laundry, parking, as well as a nice yard). We'd completely share the house...I'd pay ALL utilities...rent would be something in the region of $500-550 or so I think at first glance of the rates (and this is it...no utilities or anything else...$500-550/mo, end of story!). Perhaps could chip in for plowing and things like that though... Looking for a quiet person, no smoking/no drugs/no parties (except when we all pass the COMLEX)/no excessive drinking/etc. Just a nice person in general.

And here's the best part: I'd be willing to give you rides to and from school in my really cool 1990 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon...how could you pass this deal up ???

Just thought I would throw this out there now...apparantly Pat Kelley's RSAS office at UNE has a housing match system in May, but I thought I'd just mention it now. PM me if you're interested.

Best regards for a good 5 months until we begin (I still can't believe it... !)

Ryan.

Hey Ryan. I would be interested in possibly living in a place such as the one you describe. Just IM me at Scroogeb1c1 (AIM) or email me at [email protected]. Thanks!

Hey Guys

I called and made my second deposit today.

Also I am back from my week off on the west coast. It was fun and beautiful weather.

Enjoy Valentinessssssss

FYI: you can call student services and make it by credit card.

(though a wee bit late 🙁 ) Happy Valentine's day all! And Congrats, Sarah -- Welcome! 😀 😀

Yeah, I sent my second deposit check last week. Lisa confirmed they got it today. Yay! Still can't access pipeline. 🙁

Say, anyone get any financial aid information yet? I filed FAFSA a couple of weeks ago, but all I've gotten from UNE has been a vague "you'll see more from us" letter.

😕

None here either; I have yet to fill out the FAFSA. . . . Trying to straighten out a few things first 😳

Hey All,

If anyone has access to Pipeline, try adding the class of 2010 thread to your groups.

The button is on top (groups).

Hey Docbill, I think I added myself to the 2010 group on Pipeline, but I have to wait and see if it worked... I'm guessing they email us or something 🙂

Congrats Sarah!

I think I added myself to 2010 group in pipeline, but not sure... 😕

I sent my request in (for permission from the group leader) to be added to the UNECOM 2010 group. . . . 🙂

Yeah.. even though I joined the group. It doesn't look like the administrator is addiing anyone yet. Last year he wanted to wait till he has the whole class deposit in or something like that. So maybe we have to wait.

Ok. I've paid my second deposit. Got an acknowledgement that they got it. I *still* can NOT access pipeline - can't get a UNE ID/PRN.

Please tell me this isn't a sign and that other folks can't get into pipeline either. I'm having a really REALLY bad four weeks here (carpet came in and it's defective - it was a freekin' special order and will take another 3 weeks to get new new carpet in, and I'll have to empty the house of furniture AGAIN).

And let me tell you, the two 36" TVs were horrible to move up and down the stairs, the sleeper sofas are heavy, and... oh, yes... the 1000 pound safe was a total b#tch to move. By ourselves. No dolly. And I'm gonna have to do it AGAIN.

****.

I am seriously seriously not happy here.

Shyrem, it sounds like you not having too much fun!!! That is okay nothing will seem so difficult after this. NOT even anatomy!!

2 x 36 inch TV's Why???? My family has 3 x 36inch+, I just never understood why. I have a 19' TV in my place.

1000lb safe. WOW. I guess it makes it hard to steal that.

Sorry about the carpet. It sucks when things don't work.

Shyrem, it is still early since students haven't officially received information pertaining to pipeline access, etc. yet. If after receiving official information, pipeline is still inaccessible, it would be a good idea to contact the relevant department(s).

Thanks, Chandy. I was starting to feel left out! But at least I know it's not just me nor is it attached to the second deposit. 🙂 I feel better now and will quit stressing. Ok, I'll TRY to quit stressing.

docbill, two 36" tv's that we got for free from other family members (upgrading to HDTV, plasma, or projections). One in the entertainment center, and the other ended up in our bedroom. We put it up there when I broke my ankle (and ended up also tearing two ligaments) and was in 3 casts in a 12 month period. We thought that with my mobility being a tad limited bed was a good place to plop since I'm not very good negotiating stairs on crutches.

And the safe? We always said that if someone was going to break into the house and pick it up, we'd hold the door for them on the way out. It's a pretty "safe" safe to have (truly, no pun intended).

Hi everyone,

I'm starting at UNECOM in August and was wondering if anyone is looking for roommates. I'm currently looking for a house/condo (non-seasonal) in the Biddeford area to share with 2 or 3 other people.

Looking forward to meeting you all!
Carly

I got an email today, too. I'm on there! :luck:

I am planning on calling the Financial Aid office, but does anyone know if we are supposed to fill out anything other than the FAFSA and the supplemental financial aid paper that is online? I've been looking on the website for a while now and I just found a link, today, that guides the Fall 2006 incoming COM class to financial aid stuff just for us. Anyone have any other info regarding deadlines or forms that need to be filled out, or do we just wait to get our financial aid packages/letter? It said they start sending them in March.

Shannon 😛

So who is everyone going with for an alternative loan?
i personally use THE... it's one of them that the school suggests/tells you about. I find if the school works well with them it saves a lot of hassle of working back and forth between the loan company and the school. However, check out the rates and the fees and such and see what works best for you. 🙂

hey class of 2010 -
Congratulations on your acceptance!!! I just wanted to pop in and say hi - my name is Andrea and I'm currently a first year at UNECOM - I will also be one of your orientation leaders in the fall, and I can't wait to meet everyone!! I love UNECOM, I'm a huge promoter of everything about the school, the location, everything - so if you have any questions/concerns/want someone honest to tell you what it's like, anything like that - I'm around, I'm VERY honest, and I would love to talk with you!!
My AOL screenname is AndeMVB, and that's the best way to catch me - I love distractions from studying, so please drop me a line!!
I'll try to make it a habit to check in here too - I'll work on my profile and all that jazz - I'm still new to this whole thing, but welcome to Maine and I hope to hear from you soon!! :luck:

I rec'd an e-mail about being in the Class of 2010 group and also a snail mail from financial aid today about my supplemental financial aid application. Now, just need to start looking for a place.

Oh, on the car front, my wife's car was vandalized last night outside our building. 1 of 4 cars that had the passenger window smashed in just for fun it seems b/c nothing was stolen from her car. Go figure. I think I should just give my license back to DMV...
