Hey all.

Congrats again on getting accepted. I'm Steve, class of 2009. I just thought I'd say hi and offer myself to answer any questions you guys might have. I know i was full to the brim with questions about the school and the area when i was in your shoes. Like Andrea and Farhan, I'm going to be one of your orientation leaders this summer, and it will be AWESOME. Last years orientation was an absolute blast and hopefully we'll manage to top that this year.

If you guys got any questions, concerns, anything, drop me an PM (sectoidbob) or email [edit] Distractions from work are 100% welcome.

Oh yeah, if any of you guys are gearheads, that would be super exciting. I love working on my car, but i seem to be the only one in the school with that particular hobby 😀

Hope to hear from you, and don't forget to relax while there's still time 🙂

Oh, I can work on a car, but usually just to fix 'em. I was ripping out the ignition coil from my husband's truck with my leg (in a cast at the time) propped up on the frame while my head and shoulders were stuck inside the engine. Right now I gotta figure out which fusible link (at least I think it's the fusible link) is blown in that same truck. go figure - my car works great. His truck breaks down ALL THE STINKIN' TIME. And while he can work on the truck, I'm the one that taught him how to change his spark plugs and started him on the path of not paying the mechanic except under extreme circumstances.

SO... any good ideas of where to buy a house at a reasonable price? I don't mind a fixer-upper - I'm also pretty darn good at fixing up a house (within reason). And what kind of stuff for school should we look for on sale before we move up to Maine? Stuff we should buy before year 1 starts? And are there any brand specific things that UNE wants us to buy (like a particular brand of computer, etc)?

FuzzieSteve,

You got to stop coming near any cars. You have something wrong going on. Some bad voudou stuff - a spell or something. You got to stay away from cars for 30 days period.

To our orientation leaders. Thanks for posting and I am sure we will have lots and lots of questions for you guys soon.

Thanks for posting JonB. It seems like a ton of students use THE for loans, so I guess we're just going to have to wait and see what happens with all that loan info and figure it out once it comes.

On a fun note, I am so excited that our orientation leaders are SO excited for orientation! Do we get a preview of any of the activities? From past posts, it sounded like there is a ton of fun, outdoorsy type stuff before the formal school orientation... so what do we have to look forward to before we give our lives over to UNE?

Thanks for posting Andrea and Steve!

Shannon

And Fozzie, I agree with DocBill.... it sounds like a curse... I had a string of bad luck like that last year... except mine ended with taking the MCAT... maybe you need to consider a horrible cure like that 😛

Good luck with all that crazy car trouble!

Darn right i'm excited. How often do you get to go white water rafting in a hydroelectric gorge?!

Wellllll, i can't precisely speak for this years orientation since the social committee is hard at work on plans for this year, but last year we did an overnight camping/whitewater rafting trip out someplace in the hinterlands of maine. that was a fun time. fun yet terrifying. Disclaimer though, it's only speculation that that's happening again.

We also had a bbq/picnic, hiking trips and some other stuff. We rented out a bar in kennebunk (Fed Jack's) for a night and there was also a cruise in saco bay the friday night after the first week. Classes aren't too intense for the first week or so, so you can have some fun before anatomy kicks down a gear. 😱

Trust me, it's a great intro to this whole medical school thing. 😀

Oh yeah, i totally feel you guys' pain about cars. My beloved Pontiac is recovering from an accident. Over 3000 in damage just to my car. Nowhere near as bad as that poor civic though.

Steve OUT

I'm definitely with Steve on the excitement factor - we're gonna have a blast, and it's a great way to start your new lives in Maine and in medical school!! I want to encourage you guys to take full advantage of all the orientation stuff - both in the summer, and then the extra stuff we have going on the first week when you get here - it's a great way to meet your classmates, and believe me, walking into the first day of mandatory orientation is a whole lot easier when you have some friendly faces to look for!!
So, like Steve said, if you have any questions, comments, concerns - about equipment, books, housing, Maine, if you're having a panic attack that Oh My God, I'm going to MEDICAL SCHOOL (believe me, I had more than one, so I can definitely relate) please don't hesitate to contact me ([email protected] or AndeMVB on AOL IM) - we became orientation leaders because we're wicked excited to work with you guys, and we're here to help - and studying gets old, so talking to new people sounds much more enjoyable!!
Have as much fun as you can now and I look forward to hearing from a lot of you soon!!

Hi Steve,
Steve here. Sorry to hear about your car. At least the pontiac is in a repairable condition. I'm looking forward to orientation big time! One of my good friends is a 2nd year there and has told me how much fun her orientation was and how much fun it was to be an orientation leader for your class last year. White water...camping...Maine gorgeousness...I can't wait!!!
My AIM name is fozziewan (how convenient) so, be on the lookout for future IM's from me.
Cheers,
Steve

Hey all. Sorry you havent heard from me in a while. I have been waiting to post again until I had good news that I had been accepted but it hasnt come yet. Over 4.5 weeks now. So I am pretty much resigned to not getting in this year. I guess I still have a shot because I havent gotten that rejection letter yet but I am not holding out much hope. I am going to give Lisa a call on Monday to inquire though cause it will be 5 weeks then. Anyone else have any advice? Anyway, hope that everyone is doing well. Drop me a line if you want either here or on AIM at robparker54. Take care guys.

I didn't hear back from them until about 7 weeks after my interview. No news is good news at this point I guess. Just hang in there. They overhauled their admissions process this year and are trying their best to work out the bugs so to speak. The 4-6 week quote they gave you at the interview/tour session was just a rough estimate. If I'm not mistaken Shyrem and a couple others rec'd acceptance just barely a week after their interview while myself and a friend of mine who interviewed on 13 September did not receive our acceptance letters until 05-07 November time frame. I wish you the best and hope you receive great news ASAP!
Cheers,
Steve :luck:

Rob, don't be too negative! It's still within the 4-6 week window they quoted, I wouldn't start sweating until after 7 weeks. Truly. Heck, I waited for 20 freakin' weeks for Vermont to reject my butt (yeah, they SAID I'd hear from them in the next "several" weeks... TWENTY WEEKS IS NOT SEVERAL), and then they rejected me TWICE. Yup, TWO rejection letters. I guess they REALLY wanted me to know they hated my app. 😉

Anyways, 4.5 weeks isn't bad at all. Really - don't stress until week 7. Honestly... 🙂 :luck:

Hello everyone and congrats on making it into UNECOM. I am currently a first year student who serves as a tour guide and will be one of your orientation leaders. Should you guys have any questions about anything, ie. books, where do i live, what do i need....please shoot me an email at :
[email protected]

I'm here to help you guys with a smooth transition into becoming into a med student. Enjoy your time off now because in a few months you'll wish you had it!!!
Take care and hope to hear from you guys...once again welcome to UNECOM!!!

Hey all. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I contacted Lisa today and she told me that the final deposition hasnt been made yet to decide my status. She also said that with all the transitions with Deans changing and revamping the admissions process, that things are a little slower this year. I really am hoping though that I do get in. As you guys know, UNECOM is my dream school and I very badly want to matriculate there. So as soon as I know something more definitive, you guys will know it too. Take care.

Many of you will be looking to purchase a house instead of renting during your medical school years. My husband and I did---with no regrets. As I continue my rotations, we will be moving back to Colorado so I can finish up around our home town. With this, we are placing our beautiful Cape Style HOME FOR SALE BY OWNER. I will be staying here until July 1st-ish, then heading back across country. Perfect for a potiental student-buyer because you will have time to unpack and get to know the area (and play at the beach) before classes start. A little about our house. It is in a highly desired area of Biddeford and ~15-18 minutues to school depending on traffic. As mentioned above, it is a Cape Style house, 1400 sq. ft. (not including the unfinished basement--lots of potential), 3 bedrooms, 1.5 bath., hardwood floors, new carpet, repainted walls, upgraded fixtures, refridg, etc., washer/dryer are negotiable, backyard deck, great yard, and is on .5 acre lot. Please reply back or feel free to call 207-286-3255. P.S. We have a lender all ready lined up if you need her...because she did awesome with our Re-Fi last summer. P.S.S. UNECOM and Maine---a great experience. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon! Sarah Shepherd

Hey Class of 2010,

Congrats on getting in! I'm currently a 2nd year. On behalf of my landlord, I just wanted to make you aware of an apartment that will be available in early July. It is in Saco, 5 miles from school (the Saco River is in our backyard). It's an unfurnished 2 bed rooms and 1 bathroom, 5 room apartment. It's pretty spacious, very clean, and updated. All the appliances were brand new when my roommate and I moved in 2 yrs ago. It's a very quiet apartment. Off road parking, the road it is on is a dead end anyways. We've been pretty happy there. Rent for us has been $850/mo including heat and hot water. If you have questions or are interested e-mail me at [email protected].

Enjoy the rest of your time before school.

Hey Docbill,

I am excited that we only have 5 months left!!! I've been excited ever since I found out in November! Sorry you had to reply to yourself; I've been gone a few days soaking up the sun

and another housing option:

Wow! Less than 5 months!!! :wow: I'm stoked! I just received another supplemental application for financial aid after having filled one out, sent it in and checked that they had rec'd it on my u-online status page. Anyone else have this happen to them? Also, housing...gotta say, not too happy with the selection so far via the online pdf listings and what I've found on craigslist.org. Some really nice sounding places however they are anti-pet and a good portion are seasonal. I'm hoping more pet-friendly and year round options open up before too long. My wife wants to move up and get a nice job as an OT before the summer. Okay, time to step down from the soapbox.

I still can't access u-online or pipeline. I have my PRN, but my DOB pw doesn't work with it. *sigh*. However, I also got a second supplementary FA app. I called them and they had my first one. They also had my FAFSA info.

Housing. I think we're going to have to get a fixer-upper a little ways out. There are a few out there, and we can do a lot in a month if we get there late June/early July. Some reasonable housing in Waterboro and Alfred, but we're looking at buying rather than renting (hard to rent for a family of four with two dogs). It'll all work out. 🙂

I think it's just something to write about, (not a whole lot going on at UNE right now, everyone is hunkered down with a bunch of tests). oh well... only two weeks till spring break! 🙂

Jon, whats with the VW story. I did not read the whole thing.. is there a point.. or just the people with VW decided to take pictures.

It reminds me I will definitely need a car there. That sucks.. but oh well.

Biodiesel! There's couple of people up here that have converted their VW TDIs to biodiesel, which, incidently is better for the environment and more renewable than all that hybrid rigamorole. 😀

EDIT. If you're in the market for a car, consider the GM 4-cylinder engines as a reliable alternative to some of the japanese makes. From personal experience, they are very, very reliable, get good mileage, have more grunt than some japanese engines and they are easy to fix, particularly '03 and up. Ignore the '02 2.2L, they had teething problems. They're a bright spot in GM's life at the moment. They can be found in cars like Grand Am, Malibu, Alero, Ion, Cavalier, Cobalt.

:meanie: Hi guys,

I'm just interviewed last saturday and received the acceptance letter on tuesday.. 🙂 i'm really happy right now.. and can't wait to see the rest of the class in july.

One question though, when should I start looking for housing? (i.e. now or what) in addition, does the D.O./Ph.D program offer paid tuition?

OK. I can get into U-online now, but not pipeline. But since I can get into U-online, I just completed my loan entrance counseling. 🙂 I guess we'll all be hearing about FA awards soon (didn't they say 'early March'?).

Everyone else keeping on top of things?

Hello everyone. My name is Steven Menard and I will be a member of the 2010 class.... this is awesome! I have read through a few pages of this thread and can only seem to find a handful of classmates. Can anyone send me information of who is in our class or anything like that? Where you or they are and when they or you will be in Maine to prepare for August?

I can't wait to meet everyone! 🙂

Steve

Oh yes... I am a fellow gearhead myself...(I forgot who put that post)

Hello everyone,

I am also a (recently accepted, yay!) member of the class of 2010! I can't wait to start school in the Fall, and to meet all of you. Just wanted to say "hi" to my future classmates 🙂

I'm filing my FASFA soon next week, what's this U-online thing that I should be aware of?.... March 1st was the typo on the handouts, May 1st is the actual deadline .

U-online is the online system to let you check your grades, register for classes, check FA status, etc. etc. There's a link to it on the "take me to" pull down menu on most of the web pages for UNECOM.

As for 'early March' the FA letter they sent out with the supplemental said they were going to start sending out FA award letters in 'early March'. The FAFSA deadline I thought was March 1 for 'priority' FA.

Ahhhh I see.. a VW would be nice that is for sure. My brother has a nice JETTA.

I would like to get a Honda Civic 2006. My Dad just bought one and its sweet.
But with a price tag of approx. 20,000 dollars.. it is a dream. I don't know what I will get yet. But I don't think it will be anything to cruise with searching for ladies downtown biddeford pool.

I concur. I've always been used to being either the one and only Steve in a group or 1 of 2. Anyways, I wish to Congratulate all of you newly accepted folks!!! 👍 👍 😀

Redwings: Have you heard anything yet??

Gearhead Steve's:
I used to be a gearhead on LC-130's and C-130's in the Air Force. Good times. Except for when it was in -30 windchills, refueling, at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. So...yeah...um...my point, none really.

Bill: nice list.
swt: GO Sox! I'm still not too happy about the Damon debacle. c'est la vie eh?

I've had access to U-online and pipeline, nothing really interesting as of late.
Just picked up my new 12" powerbook G4. Love it! I had to take advantage of my employee discount before the sweet deals disappeared.
Offer still stands for anyone interested in a computer or ipod. Just FYI 🙂

I'm glad that we are finally growing in numbers on here.
ON the car front, still sans auto. My wife and I moved out of our apartment b/c our landlord wasn't doing anything about the drug dealer POS neighbor and also b/c of the multiple parked car issues we've had in the wonderful city of Troy, NY. Living with the in-laws is great so far. I'm closer to work and almost completely stress-free. Go fig!
😀

😳 Hi Everyone! I'm so proud to be a fellow member of the c/o 2010. Wow, sometimes it seems hard to believe! I was actually accepted a few months ago, but I haven't had time to register on SDN.
I'm from Lakeville, MA. My big sis is a MSII at UNECOM, so I've visited quite a bit over the past two years. I absolutely love the campus and the students I have met! I'm pretty busy working 6 days a week as a pharm tech, but I would love to meet up with some of my future classmates... Anyone in the SE Mass area?

Hey guys,
I'm logging into U-online, and at the first screen after login, it states that pressing the "continue" button is an easy way for the registrar to confirm our intent on registering/attending for the spring 2006 semester. Shyrem/anyone else on U-online, did you go ahead with pressing the continue button? I'd hate to be registered for the spring (albeit it's already in session) semester if I'm starting in the fall. Any thoughts?
