WOAH!! Just heard about this thread from the student activities peeps during my visit to UNE last week. I'm glad to see people are already talking and getting ready to start in... 😱 just a couple months!! Kinda scary but also very exciting. I'm sure many of you know what I'm talking about. Well, I guess I will add my info to the list that has been started.

28) Dr.Triage (23) Raymond, ME

I'm from Raymond but I will be in the Boston area (oooh yeah slumerville!!) until pretty close to the time we are expected to make our appearance at UNECOM. Well, time to catch up on all of this posting business everyone has been up to. By the looks of it (700 posts) I will definitely have enough to keep busy for a while. Ah well, congrats to everyone thus far and I'll do my best to keep up with the posting.

Does anyone know of any good internet/cable service packages in the biddeford/saco area? So far, I've only found Time Warner- I think it's the only service provider available for the area... is anyone else using anything else?

So a question about housing in Biddeford.

I am going to be looking for a place in the future. not really concerned about it now except for cost. So what is cost of living in the Biddeford area? Just wanted to know how much a decent place would cost. Say perhaps a two bedroom apartment.

Just needed to know so I can save up!

Yeah Time-Warner is it for cable - for TV you can get DirecTV or Dish. For internet you can get DSL from the phone company. Phone has the usual list of options... A lot of apartments will not let you put a dish on the house/apartment though so in that case you'll be stuck with Time Warner for the TV at least.

Thanks Cabot.

Spartan, on the cheap range, from what I saw in Biddeford 2 bedroom houses averaged from 750-850. I think all of the places, if I remember correctly, already included heat in the rent.

my wife and I use GWILine (www.gwi.net)... it's $74 for unlimited phone and DSL. It's a pretty good option if you don't want to get cable too. If you want Cable, i think your best bet is to just go with time warner... hope everyone is doing well! 🙂

The best situation is to share the high speed internet and cable tv with your neighbor 🙂. 116 dollars a month divided by # of person sharing it (via coaxial video splitter and wireless a/b/g router.

if you're looking for breakfast, All-Day Breakfast - it's a cheap (but good!) little diner type place. In the same plaza as Staples, Smitty's Cinema, 99... on the left side as you head toward school from Biddo turnpike exit.

I'll go to McDonalds In Lansing, and be with you guys in spirit! 😀

Hey guys, wish I could be there tomorrow. But alas, after working in the ER and OR this past weekend, I have come down with some nasty viral thing leaving me bedridden and unable to keep anything down since Monday night. Appetitizing I know. So with that, I doubt I would make that great of company tomorrow at breakfast. If anyone is in the area on Saturday, I live in Central NH, near the Lakes Region and home to an outlet mall with over 60 stores of tax free shopping. Feel free to stop in and say hi. Take care and have fun tomorrow.

Man I am sitting on campus now.. and it was a nice couple of days. It was crazy, I slept a good 8 hours last night. SO QUITE HERE and so dark.

Crazy thing is that most of the med students are away.???!!!??? very few here right now. Hmmm maybe they are not worked that hard.. hehehehe.

BTW, Looking forward to meeting a few of you here for breakfast tomorrow. It should be fun. I found another student on campus that will be in our class and I invited him to come and join us.

Hey guys, I wish that I could join you this morning for breakfast but I'm stuck in NY. I hope you have fun! Also, DocBill I hope your talk went well. I saw the announcement on pipeline and it looked pretty interesting🙂

random question: anyone else planning on using loan money to finance a car? we'll just say that my beat up old bucket failed inspection twice and it's time to move on, haha

A lot of people are thinking about using Loan money to finance a car, the transportation cost is 400.00 per month or 4000.00 per year (10 month). So theoretically, buy a car would probably run you with 200 to 250 per month in payment for 4 year financing. for something that's about 12000. but then you have to think about auto insurance, gasoline (price is so high now), oil change, and maintanence. since auto loan doesn't have summer vacation, expect to be paying all 12 month instead of 10 month so the normalized 400.00 per month is about 333 a month. unless you get a good deal on a 2nd hand car for like 9000.00 bucks and bring the price down.

Hey Guys,
I just got back to Toronto.

It was fun being there. I put most of my concerns to rest. The city is not bad. Everything is there. Big stores, walmart, staples, etc.... so its not so bad. Like I said in my other post, I don't think I ever slept so well.

The breakfast with 3 others from our class and two of their spouses was good. It was really friendly and easy to talk to everyone. I think we also realized that we all have one or two things in common with each other. Also the biggest thing for me is that everyone is equally as concerned about "making it"... you know succeeding in the first year of classes. So it assured us that we are not the only one. There were two pictures taken and munchi84 will prob post them on pipeline when he gets back home.

Jess and Erin where fun to talk to as well. Erin is the one with the mustang!

Okay piece out.. must reply to email.

PS. Talk went well. Unfortunatly there were not too many people.

You guys already "made it." Getting in was the hard part. Now it's just a grind. As long as you keep yourself honest with the work and know how you learn you will be absolutely fine. Nobody has failed out of our class. This is not to say that it won't suck at times, of course, but that kinda comes with the territory.

Yay Mustangs, btw. The state animal of New Jersey, I hear. I eat V6 'stangs for lunch. yum yum. 😀

Thanks S-Bob, I really hope you are right. I will totally by you a beer or 10 for that.

BTW, I forgot to mention. I was pleased with only 25 min to NH and 1 hour to greater boston. If I need something or just need to get away.. I can just drive to see friends or just for the day.

Meh. Portland's closer and easier and has most of what you need. The outlets at freeport and kittery are nearby too. People do go into boston from time to time, y'know especially since you know people there. I've been meaning to do that all semester, since i've never been there.

I'm holding to the beer 😛

hey fellow mates...
Im driving into area from LA. Should I fly down first and find an apartment, then drive down. Anyone with experience in a cross country move?
thanks

Hey Ben Welcome to the class.

That is a difficult thing to answer. I moved from Vancouver to Toronto but did not pre-visit and find a place. You can always find a roomate (if you are looking for one) and a place "a distance". With digital picture of the place etc...

If you are not going to pre-visit, the other option would be to stay at a hotel or bed/breakfast etc.. for a week or so till you find a place in Town. Or if you make friends ahead of time on SDN, then I am sure someone will not mind sharing their floor with you... For example... if you are *normal* I would not have a problem with that.

Ben please add yourself to the class list.

Has anyone taken a look at laptops yet? I've seen the system req. list but I was wondering if anyone has seen any good deals or if you have any personal recommendations, comments on apples vs. dells, etc. I've also looked at those links UNE sent us for dells and apples but I was wondering, are we actually getting a deal (or possibly a discount??) by using these websites or is it just a way for UNE to get some sort of kickback from each purchase? Any help would be great, thanks!

Ive been sizing up prices online and through Dell.com and through some other websites and i feel you can get a good deal by just shopping at the dell store in your mall or through online websites... also if you work for a big company consider finding out if your work can get you a discount...

im not sure about apples, have always been a PC user...
also, microsoft is coming with a new system platform like next year or later this year...

Apple education discounts are pretty good. Depends on the system. So, yes those links are for real. Apple does not give kickbacks to colleges for giving out the link. At the retail store I work at we're surrounded by many colleges and universities who are eligible for the educational pricing. Students come in all the time, show their student ID and receive a discount on Apple branded products: iPods, computers, Apple accessories and the extended service plans.
I used my employee discount and picked up a 12" Powerbook for a nice deal. Perfect size, great speed, and light. I increased the RAM to 1Gig. If anyone has any questions, as I've said before in previous posts in regards to thid topic, feel free to PM me.
Apple vs. Dells... I'll say this: you pay for quality. IE: Dells are cheap=crap. There are some outliers who have been happy and received a good laptop. I'm sure there are a couple MSI's and MSII's that are all too familiar with what I'm saying. If you want a good, stable, easy to use laptop which is not prone to spyware, viruses, trojans, etc...and is not bundled with useless software which bogs down the system...go Mac you'll never switch back. Cliche yes I know 😀
Okay, time to step off my soapbox yet again.

Thanks for the input foz!

I have not kept up with the progress of the mac systems, but do they still have issues with not being compatible with many programs/software? I remember back when I was in the market for a desktop a lot of my friends who had macs ran into numerous problems in this area and the rest of the world/college campus was pretty much pc dominated anyway, so I chose to just stay away. I've heard that nowadays they have some sort of program or what have you that will allow the mac to run many, if not all, of the pc programs/software. Is this true? If so, then wouldn't it just make sense to get a mac and have the "best of both worlds" so to speak? Or is there something that I'm completely overlooking?

also, microsoft is coming with a new system platform like next year or later this year...
Does anyone know anything about the new platform CTgirl2010 mentioned from microsoft? Is it worth waiting for? Will it be coming out too late for us to even consider?

I'm still going to hold out for a tablet. Fujitsu, Toshiba, and Lenovo all look pretty decent. Motion is nice, but WAAAAAAAYYYY pricey (but have you seen their mini-tablet? It's SOOOOO cute!).

Thoughts? (and yeah, fozzie, Mac wouldn't be a bad choice, but they don't have a tablet.)

No, and No. The whole Microsoft Office Suite is available for Mac (Student/Teacher Edition for $149) which includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Entourage (Outlook). You can get Virtual PC for a Powerbook G4 Mac or...get the new MacBook Pro (which is Intel based) and download Boot Camp. Boot Camp allows you to run both Mac OSX and your own copy of Windows XP natively on your Mac to run those "PC -only" applications if the need arises. I've been a Mac user for many years now and have never had a problem with compatibility for programs I have had to use for undergrad (graduate back in 2002) and when I was in graduate school from summer 2004 up til Dec. 2005.
What kind of programs do you need to use that are PC only?

Also, to address the new Windows OS:
Windows Vista is due out later this year.

Tablets are nice but bulky and not really functional when you think about it. PDA's are much easier to toss into a labcoat pocket and are more user-friendly when you need quick access to patient's info on the fly or to cross reference med's via epocrates or some other pharmacopeia. (spelling?) Plus, here's the geek I am, I have Netter's Anatomy flashcards on my Palm TX!
Yeah, sooooo anyways. If you really want a Tablet PC I'd wait until you really need it. If Windows is your OS of choice and want to save some booku bucks, yes I'm going to say this: go Dell or HP/Compaq with hardcore Anti-Virus and firewalls galore with a hint of anti-spyware/adware tossed in for good measure.
Vaio's are nice as well.

WELL. I have a Toshiba Tecra M4 tablet PC. I'd say it's "average" so far as bulk goes. It rocks my world for dealing with note service since it's web based up here (unless you pay 60 extra bucks for the paper copies). It lets you do your highlighting, annotating digitally if you so choose. Not so good for class. I'd say go for it if you're willing to shell out the ~400 premium for tablet functionality.

ALSO. Still have that room available, 450/mo all utilities, heat, garbage, plowing included except cable/internet ($27 extra). In biddo, all the modern conveniences, three kick ass MSIIs to live with, and off street parking for snow bans. Birch St. fo life!
Call: xxx xxx xxxx if you're interested.

Congrats to all you guys accepted! i was placed on the accept space available list and was wondering if anyone had any info from admissions yet on if spots have opened up etc or how it has moved in previous years. My letter said it would be ranked April 28 so i am probably going to call tomorrow. I absolutely loved UNECOM, beautiful campus and great people...hope to meet all of you in the fall 🙂

au22... congrats on making it on the accept list/wait list.. whatever they are calling it now. Keep up the hope that it will work out and keep us updated.

Also still have 1, maybe 2 bedrooms available. Beautiful spacious sunny house, hardwood floors, woodstove, laundry, deck, large yard, and plenty of study areas. Extra storage for outdoor gear or the those other random items that seem to accumulate the longer you're out of college. Convenient location to grocery, school, interstate on a quiet street in Biddeford.

Email [email protected] or call 312.342.6470 if you're interested. Rent negotiable...depends on how much you want to help with yard work =)

Hello all, I am back from Maine, and my friends wedding went great 🙂 I agree with Bill, I really enjoyed our breakfast; it really made me even more anxious to get started!!! I hope everyone is doing well, and I hope all of our accepted/space available friends find good news really soon!!!
Take care,

Jess
PS- I am actually the one with the mustang-though, unfortunately, I will be more than likely parking it in CT during the maine winters, haha...- but it was me, unless Erin has one too, remember Bill you knew it was me when you saw my car??... Anyway, night all 🙂

I'm a car guy, so i'm curious. . . what year 'stang is it? V6/V8? The only other quick cars in the class right now are a '98 Camaro and an 80s Porsche 944. Sadly. On and I'd like to think my Pontiac, but the jury's out until I get around to that turbocharger.

Rock on,
STEVE

Hey guys!

I am from Coventry- right near UConn at Storrs, but I have a few friends from West Haven. I also interviewed in Feb, but I didn't know any guy who was interviewing (well, before I met people at the interview that is...).

And my car is only a 6.0 🙁 However, though it is not technically a GT I had dual exhaust and special intakes put in- actually my dad did, he knows a lot more about cars. So, I get most of what is in a GT without having to pay that GT insurance cost 👍 I am sure your pontiac is super-fast! Like I said, I will probably be driving something big and snow proof during the winter months and parking the 'stang in CT 🙁, hehe

Anyway, hope everyone is doing well!!
Jess

PS- the stang is already sportin' an UNECOM sticker- I know someone said that the bookstore was all out when they went, well, they have a few now 🙂
