I don’t know about everybody else but for me to succeed I need a really good coffee shop (Starbucks does not count). So since there isn’t one in Biddeford my wife is opening one. It will be called Union House Coffee and will be located in one of the renovated downtown mill buildings. As part of my effort to help everybody succeed I will be helping her open it and will be working there in June & July, up till school starts. We are making it a good place to study and socialize so hopefully we can put together weekly study sessions. UHC will open July 1st. Please come by and say hi. Free WiFi, student discounts, and the best coffee around. I will send out more info via pipeline closer to the open date. 🙂

Hi, my name is Romeo Lucas and I am a 3rd Year med student at UNECOM.

I am renting my house out to any students coming to UNECOM next year. Rooms are $450/month + bills (3 roommates) and $400/month + bills (4 roommates). Here's how it works: When 3 people sign on to live in the house, I will ask if you three want to let in another roommate to have your rent go down. (email, call or IM with more questions)

The house has 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, kitchen (w/dishwasher), dining room, TV room, Study room/office, laundry room (with washer and dryer), bar and wine cellar basement, screened in porch, large 2 car garage, huge backyard, tons more.

The house is in Biddeford, located 3 miles from UNECOM, .5 miles from downtown, and 4 miles from the beach (word).

This house's lore is fabled. It is a UNECOM icon. Too bad I have to go on to rotations in sunny Newark, NJ.

I can send photos if you need me to.

email ([email protected]), IM (UDporkchop on AIM) or call me at (732) 207-9749.

ALCON,

I am placing this post for a new friend I meet this weekend. He and his wife posted this earlier, if it helps anyone great, if not, no worries.

Hello all,

We are looking for housemates for next year. Our house is about 8 minutes from campus in a nice residential area and has a nice yard with a deck overlooking a private backyard. The two rooms are large with plenty of closet space and they share their own bathroom. We all share a roomy kitchen with plenty of shelf/fridge space for everyone's food. We have off-street parking, laundry, wireless high-speed internet, and unlimited local and long distance phone. We are looking for someone who is friendly, respectful, neat, and values a good home study environment. There's also a piano which you are welcome to play (if you play). I will be an MSIII next year and will be doing my clinical rotations in Southern Maine. My husband is a software engineer working on web applications for Dartmouth-Hitchcock hospital and works from home a few days a week. . Rent is $530/month which includes everything. If you are interested, email me at [email protected] or call 207-571-4757 and I will send you pictures of the house and all the rooms as well as a phone number where we can be contacted.

See you at the orientation picnic,

Eva Nunlist

P.S. Docbill, I will place the pictures tomorrow 02 MAY06 on the pipeline.

Curious, what NFL team do people in Maine typically support? The Patriots?
How about basketball? Celtics?

What a good idea! I'll be living in the renovated mill, so I plan to be a frequent visitor.

Todd, awesome idea for the coffee shop. I might be living there figuratively if not literally since I am a coffee-aholic. Just make sure you get a tv in there for Sox game nights and the Pats on Sunday afternoons. Spartan, not sure about those Mainiacs up there in Maine, but in NH, we are all diehard Sox fans and Pats fans. Those are the two main sports along with Nascar that people up in the boondocks follow. The Celtics have fallen out of favor since Bird left and the NBA has become more like And1 basketball than a real sport. Oh, and college hockey is huge in Maine and NH. The UMaine vs UNH rivalry is awesome. Games get wicked intense and the players are very skilled.

On a side note, anyone planning on having a dog in med school? I dont have one now but used to have one. I am thinking of getting a solo apt and having the dog for company. Is a med students schedule fair to a dog? Or are there anyone out there that has a dog and is doing it and feels its pretty good? Lastly, if you want a dog yourself and dont mind a pretty laid back guy who is a huge sports fan, I would consider a roommate if you are cool yourself. Think about it.

hehe redwing, i think todd is meant to operate a "coffee shop" (quiet, relaxing, so people can study and read) versus a "sports bar" where people want excitement and action. There are few local bars that has sports, NASCAR, and stuff in biddeford.

Although the idea of serving homemade deserts with exotic coffee from south america/africa is really good with music, and maybe a pool table.

I can tell you that a lot of us up here already study at Starbucks or Lily's Coffee. I am absolutely jacked that there's gonna be another option, espeically if it'll have its very own medical school connection. I will spread the work through the class for you guys.

I agree - great idea! I've been carting myself up to Portland to study at coffee houses because of the limited options in Biddo. Looking forward to the opening... Speaking of, were you planning on having an opening party? I know they're generally more standard for restaurants and bars, but having an opening event once classes start up again could do the trick.

Does anybody have their U-Online supplemental loan status say "Cancelled Eligibility"? I have pre-approved from Maine medical loan, and not sure if that has something to do with it.

By the way, I have calculated the whole thing out compared over 40 lenders for private loans, the rates for Maine medical loan is the best in terms of after deferring for 8 years (4 in school and 4 in residency) for amount of 90k before I even start going into repayment. It has the least amount of interest accrued during deferment, and average rate at repayment.

It might not seem like it but the 91 US treasury bill rate adjusted annually you can't really beat that.

I haven't applied for the supp loan yet, but mine still says Offered Award. I figure I'll apply for the loan on June 1 (they say not to apply until max 90 days before start of school).

Well they're wrong 🙂.. and why would you want your paper work stuck in a pile of 120 applications... when they can look at yours now right away and process it. ? 🙂

Rob:

It is probably doable years 1-2, but years 3-4 may be more challenging (depending on where you go for rotations). On one rotation I worked a 21 hour shift (once), and regularly worked 14+ hour shifts. You would probably need to have someone walk the dog with that kind of schedule. If you have or develop a decent support network where folk would be willing to let the dog out, it is doable, otherwise you may want to wait.

Hey Dr. keys:

since youve done the research, just wondering the Maine supplemental loan, is it only for Maine residents?? Im from CT so i would I qualify for it?

Yes, we will be having an opening party on July 1 but we could have another once school starts to heighten awareness. are more people interested in something like this? as for atmosphere we are thinking industrial yet warm. it will be a comfy study place w/ an art gallery attached that my wife will also run. we will have monthly art opening events and occasionally we will host other evening events. if you are a sports enthusiast you can come and get your caffeine and then go across the street to O'Reillys Pub....I think a lot of UNE students go there. –todd

For those of you that have not signed up for Pipeline yet or who have not had time to figure it out (I'm still working on this part), I think you should all try and sign up for the UNECOM Class of 2010 group. I've tried to create a mini-tutorial to show you how to do so below...

-Sign in to Campus Pipeline
-Click the "Groups" icon in the upper right portion of the screen (a separate window should pop up)
-Click the "Groups Index" link
-Under the "Category Index" heading click the "COM Class of" link
-You will be presented with a list of groups for each of the different classes. Click the "COM 2010" link
-At this point I believe it asks you why you are looking to join this group (Since I have already signed up it just brings me directly to my Class of 2010 homepage so I am trying to do this from memory) and has you submit a request to one of the leaders to join the group. Once they look your name up on the list I'm sure you will be allowed to join.

As of right now there are about 45 people currently on the members list, so quite a few people are still missing. Definitely check it out if you haven't already, there is a bunch of useful information on there. Good luck!

Yes, once you obtain any additional funds it will reduce the amount of supplemental loan eligibility on your financial aid report from UNECOM. Once you deplete all of your eligibility they apply a cancelled status to the "supplemental eligibility" on your report. I'm not sure if they also do this in increments as you chip away at your loan eligibility quote though.

yes, go ahead and sign up there, but don't forget pipeline is going to be taken down in 2 months... it's being replaced with a completely different portal (check out http://my.une.edu - log in the same as pipeline or webct, not sure which, try both). They've got groups on there too, it looks VERY different, but I think it's going to work pretty well.

Yes, as long as you attend any qualifying school in Maine (which i assume you're), then you don't need the Maine resident requirement.

that's even better - biddeford desperately needs something like this! particularly as a cultural venue...

if you wish to infuse the comfy seating/big tables with some local decor, i can recommend a local quasi-wholesale antique/junk dealer who has an expansive collection of furniture, hardware, doors, artwork, table tops, etc, and is very willing to bargain for bulk or trade. he just finished a set of tables for a coffeehouse in brooklyn. don't have his card with me now, but i can send you a message later if you're interested.

I have a spare cardboard box you could use.

The sooner the better, honestly tho. Your options may become more limited the later into summer you go. Judging from the response I've had to my own listing, your classmates are actively looking right now.

I know that a lot more UNE undergrads are living off campus this year coming up due to college housing issues, so you have them to compete with too. At least start looking at some options and figure out where you want to live (by the school, in biddo, in saco, on the beach) and if you want roommates. I highly recommend roommates btw.

Beware seasonal housing as well. Unless you like the act of moving.

Hope that helps
S-OUT

I am currently looking for a house in Biddeford where I will have some rooms to rent. Also, I was wondering how many people have AIM names? If you have an AIM, now is the time to post it.

Well you know yourself, obviously. If you think you can live with people while everybody's in a fairly high stress environment, then they're great. You have people built in to study with for practicals and review sessions. I live with two other MSIs right now, and we have a great time. You can't do this med school thing solo. If you try you will burn out in short order. It seems to me that a lot of the people in my class, at least the one's without a family/SO with them up here live with other people. I like it. You may not. It also makes everything cheaper, and you afford things like cable.

My 2 kopecks.

PS. Fleschnbones: as for screennames, i started a thread on the class o' 2010 message board on pipeline so people could post 'em. I would refer all youze guys to there since you should sign up for that if you haven't yet, anyway.

Anyone have information on the combined DO/MPH program or considering that path? Is it doable in 4 years with medical school? Anyone know the cost to medical school students? I've been to the website, just looking for more specific information. Thanks

Thanks for the info sectoid. I'm gonna get on top of the housing stuff soon.
About the AIM, mine is up on the 2010 group of pipeline.

Hey there Fleschbones, I saw your post and thought you might want to read mine. It is number 639 on this post. I own a 3 bedroom house in Biddeford that my wife and I are selling. You could rent out some of the bedrooms if you want. Contact me ASAP becaue we have had a few people looking now and if we don't get a contract soon we will probably sign up with a real estate agent.

Hey Guys,

I have not posted a little bit. I am just trying to look busy... yeahhh that is it.

BTW, I can be taken off the list of people looking for a place. I found the right place last week. It comes with notes!!! and all the gossip about current MS1s... hehehe

SectoidBob, thanks for the pics of the place. I guess you will not have trouble finding someone.

docbill

PS. 3 months exactly left. I am so loooking forward to this.

Congrats, What does your place look like? what's the setup of your new crib? how far is it from school? I really want a beach house, however, the seasonal's is preventing me from getting one. So i had to settle for Loft close to school

Hey guys. Hope everything is well with everyone. So a little update. I called today to find out where I was on the space available list cause I really want to be a member of the class of 2010. They are waiting on the dean giving the rankings a final look and will be sending out letters next week. So another week of waiting but hopefully will be getting good news next week. As far as roommates go, us space available people cant get on pipeline. They want our money first. So if anyone is looking for a roommate, I am too. I am a pretty laid back guy, clean, sports nut, dont smoke and dont drink, but does like to kick back every once and a while. I am also hoping to get a dog so if you want one, that might be cool. Guys or girls, it dont matter to me as long as you are cool and dont smoke. My AIM is in my profile. Take care and hope to hear from you.
-Rob

PS Happy Cinco de Mayo. Go out and have one for me tonight.

i'm going to be heading down the DO/MPH route as well, so I called the school a couple weeks back to get some information. they said that they let us get used to the first year for the fall and winter, and then in the spring we'll be able to begin signing up for MPH classes. I forget the exact cost, but's it's wicked cheap compared to going for the MPH on its own at some other school. And as long as you're willing to dedicate some time to the MPH during the summer, 4 years is completely doable. hope that helps.

gdizzle, I'm actually very interested in the DO/MPH program as well, do you know if we need to apply for it from the beginning? or just apply/sign-up/take class along the way.. Then submitt all the classes to the dual degree requirement and get it? I want to maximize my medical education. 🙂 let me know thanks

In my opinion, unless you have a partner or family nearby to take care of it, getting a dog in medschool is a very bad idea. Especially if you live more than 5 miles or so from school.
You will have days when you spend over 8 hours per day in school and I think that's way too long to keep a dog cooped up alone. You will also need someone to take care of it during rotations. Moreover, many people do not like to rent to people with dogs.
I lived with a friend and her dog for a few weeks at the begining of school. the dog was so cute and totally depressed when left alone for long periods of time. Many times, it's little bladder couldn't hold and it went to the bathroom inside all the time which was stressful for both dog and owner. If your solo, I would highly recommend waiting to a dog.

SUMMER!!! FINALS are over!!!!!!

sorry had to say it. I'm going to enjoy the 3 months off.
Anyone doing anything fun? I think i'm taking a road trip to DC/NYC

Congrats Spartan! Enjoy your time off, take it easy and we'll see you in August!! Hey, is anyone planning on going to the Osteoblast festivities on May 20th? I'm gonna go but I will have to arrive a little late. Let me know.

Hey thanks. I think I want a dog for the companionship and just the fact that I love dogs, but I have thought about it being unfair to the dog with me not being home. I am probably going to wait to get the dog, even though I want it. But I still am looking for a cool roommate. Anyone interested?

I would strongly recommend doing the DO/MPH route. It's a valuable component of your education and also makes you more desireable down the line. I completed my MPH back in Chicago, before starting here, although I did have to fly back last fall right before finals to defend my thesis. So while not quite the same situation, I found the MPH work, as a blanket statement, provides perspective into the reality of the world we will be practicing in and better prepares you to address health issues sustainably, whether from the administrative end or preventively as a clinician. It also fosters more critical thinking than you will encounter in medical school (at least years 1 and 2 of any medical program).

As to whether it's doable in concert with the DO...of course you'll make a handful of sacrifices...but it's one of the most flexible programs in the country (via distance learning), and you can do it in 4 years (most are 5, and if you do it separately, it's 6). My roommate is in the program, and is handling it just fine. Just don't start any of the courses until you finish your first semester.

That's great. Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm not applying until 2007 but UNE is definitly one of my choices.
