I applied right before the deadline...I don't know if they think it was done as a safety school or if they think I wouldn't matriculate but I do want to find out why I was ranked so low but I dont want to call and sound like a jerk assuming I should be put anywhere higher on the list, I was just hoping I'd be in a better position. I really did love the school and would go there in an instantbut it doesn't look too good for me right now. Do you think I should email Lisa Lane and see if she might be able to tell me anything as to why?

I applied right before the deadline as well unfortunately, so I partially blame myself for the situation that I'm in. As for emailing, calling her, or waiting it out I'm not sure what you should do. It MIGHT be a good idea to draft up a letter of intent/interest (after your exams) expressing how much you love UNECOM, the community, the opportunities it allows, etc. as well as stating your desire to do whatever you can to become a part of that community either now or next year. Maybe include an interest as to how you might "beef up" your application (in case they do want to interview you/all of us). That might elicit a response as to what qualities/qualifications you might be deficient in. I personally am all for getting in my car, making an appointment to meet with Ms. Lane, and then sitting down in person and discussing my interest/questions I have if she has the time.
Who knows, maybe I can gain some further insight by talking to students/faculty at the Osteoblast. At least I'll hopefully gain a better understanding and appreciation of how awesome UNECOM will be when I am accepted by going (and the free food is cool).
I hope you'll keep me (and all of us) informed and I wish you the best of luck

In response to both...definitely make it clear to Lisa that you love the school, but keep it simple - they're swamped. A long letter will likely be thrown in your file unread. Make a phone call or send a brief email, check in periodically, and maintain personality so they remember you and not just another desparate applicant. It will help.

Hey guys,

I just sent Lisa a quick email asking for some more information on how it works for 2007 and asking if she could tell me anything about why I was ranked so low so I could improve my application if i should have to reapply. I am really disappointed 🙁 Hopefully she will get back to me and I will share with you guys right away. Good luck!

Thanks a lot 🙂 That would be extremely helpful...I'll drop her a line in the near future as well expressing my interest in attending UNECOM.

   Since there are 2 lists (alternate + accept space avail.), I wonder if the projected ~70 people waitlisted includes both lists. BECAUSE, if that's the case, then it could be 35 on accept space and 35 alternates.
That would put you at ~25st person in line which is better than the alternative 🙂

That would be amazing! But at this point I am trying not to get my hopes upanymore but thank you for being so positive about it 🙂 I think I remember they said they interview only 350-400? So maybe it isn't as many people as we think, plus all the other people who may be on the accept space available or alternate lists who havent withdrawn yet...I'm grasping at straws over here haha  I really just want to know if there was a weakness in my application that hurt me...29 and a 3.6 and pretty decent extracurriculars and medical experience plus shadowing with a DO though I didn't get to ask him for a letter of rec in time. I interviewed with the biochem professor whose name I cant remember right now but I thought it was a really good interview so I don't know anymore. At this point I'd donate a kidney to get into medical school lol.

Since everyone else is doing it, I've decided to post my housing opportunity on here as well. My name is Ryan Zwerin, and I am graduating from Penn State and going to UNECOM in August. I have acquires a 1400 square foot house on fortunes rocks road near biddeford pool. In case you haven't heard, this road is ON THE OCEAN. Essentially, you could be walking in waves in less than a 30 second walk. The house is FULLY FURNISHED with washer, dryer, dishwasher, fully redone kitchen, 1 queen bed, two doubles, and one single in multiple rooms. I will be taking the queen 😛. There is also a porch on the second floor designed for pleasant ocean viewing!! Beat that!!!
Now, the damage. The cost of the house would be 400 dollars a month plus utilities. There is a driveway as well. I prefer a male roommate. year doesn't matter........I don't even care if you smoke, as long as you keep it outside and respect the house. This is essentially a resort house, which would provide an excellent place for peaceful study after a long day of class..........and campus is 2 miles away! Consider it, and email me at [email protected] . Later!

Note: I will not be moving into this house until the day after labor day.........in the meantime, hotels provide cheap temporary housing. To get a house with a location this nice, some sacrifices have to be made. If you're into it, drop me a line.

You're the man, Should we start planning house parties at your house during the school year? 🙂

Hey Fozziewan, where have you been!!!

You still jumping around and doing biochemistry.

Heya Bill and Everyone!
I took the evil distance biochemistry final exam up in Biddo this past weekend. I passed!! Got a B! I'm happy. 😀
Yes, the biochemistry professor who interviewed a good portion of us is named Dr. Yonuschot. He's really nice but the biochem final was somewhat brutal.
Also, I chose to go with the USAF for the HPSP scholarship. I was commissioned yesterday (10 May 06) as a 2nd. Lieutenant in the Reserves. I leave for Commissioned Officer's Training at the end of this month for a 4-week course down in Alabama.
My wife and I found an excellent 2-bedroom apartment in Biddo. We'll move in sometime in early July now since I won't be back until about that time.
Good luck to everyone on the waiting/space-A list! Keep us posted.

Cheers,
2nd. Lt. Fozziewan

Hey 2nd Lt.Fozziewan

Good to hear that you survived Biochem

BTW, Does anyone have a list of the material and books that we need. In my mail package there was nothing about that. Just the immunization stuff, dates, course exemption and some other stuff. Nothing about orientation either.

The list is coming in your next mailing, as I recall. Generally, we don't buy our books until after the classes actually start. It's good to see if the prof is actually going to use the book as a primary source, or as a secondary resource after his notes. Several classes never used their books.

Especially with anatomy and histology atlases, wait and see what fits your learning the best, you don't need them all. And some books you probably won't need at all. Wait to see how the prof's teach. That's my advice.

Any idea of when mailings are going out? Some of us are moving at the end of June/early July and will be without mail service for at LEAST two weeks.

I'm not privy to the dates, being a lowly OL, but you should probably inform the RSAS office of your moving plans so they can get the packet to the right address.

right address. RIIIIIiiiiiiiight. I think I'm going to get a PO box for anything sent out after June 20 or so. But I won't get it until we get us and all our stuff to Maine sometime around July 10. It's not like we're moving a few hours away here - we figure with two kids and two dogs it'll take at least four full days of driving (and we'll need valium by then). If we're lucky we'll close on the house when we get to Maine (if we can find one *and* sell our house by then). Otherwise we'll be living in a temporary rental until the housing thing shakes out.

How do you get a PO Box from 2000 miles away, anyway? I gotta go hit USPS website.......

Sorry. A bit cranky here. Husband's out of town, my parents are coming in tomorrow (THREE FULL DAYS EARLIER than expected, so I'm cleaning the house like a maniac), kids have three days of school off, and the stress is starting to get to me. I still have to pour concrete, oil the cedar siding on the house, put up baseboard, finish painting the living room, put down the threshold in the kitchen... and I did so much work today I didn't eat anything all day until 5pm.

I'm a bit overwhelmed tonight. I'm gonna go get chocolate and a nice white wine. *sigh* I can't wait for med school to start and everything to calm down.

Hey Steve (#2 of many)

Thanks for the reply. I wont be buying any books yet. I hope some second year students will pass on used ones (sell of course). Also from what I heard you don't need to buy all the books.

I guess I should of specified, what instrumentations do we need. Stes, cuffs, etc.. cause I can prob get a them cheaper here.

Thanks db

If you need someone physically in the Biddo area to open a post office box, please let me know (I don't know if I can open in your name, though) I'd be happy to help out.

Def get what you can there. This is part of a post I made a couple pages back on books and supplies:

The major issue we had was with our very pricey 'diagnostic equipment' - stethoscope, bp cuff, ophthalmoscope, etc. There may be some 'package' bargains through the school, but that's one thing most people who bought individually did better. If you want to save some money, look into those 3 things (you'll need others, but they're minor). Consider calling the UNE bookstore for comparison to see what they're offering and for how much.

If anyone works in a lab, hospital, or clinic, you'll need boxes of NITRILE gloves for gross anatomy (most ppl double-glove in gross, x4days/week x 4 months x bathroom breaks and study sessions...), 1-2 sets of scrubs, and scalpel blades, so get free supplies if you can. I quit my clinic job before I knew...

-Adrienne

All this stuff seems overwhelming!
Would you guys who have done it before recommend buying the equipment before we get to Biddeford, and the books once classes start? Or is there any other scenario?

you're not going to need the equipment on the first day of class.. so buy both the equipment and books when you get there. However, when i say buy it when you get there there doesn't mean you buy it at the bookstore. (it means buy it online or else where) then send it to where you live at school. Unless there is a good deal or the price is the same at the bookstore.

the same stethoscope can be in the range of 70 dollars to 250 dollars depends on where you're looking. I have found a top of the line stethoscope sells at 130 dollars versus 300 dollars at another place. So..choose wisely.

Thanks, Wook. I'll let ya know. At this point we have to be here through at least June 17 - after that we'll pack up. Hopefully the house will sell at the rate others have sold recently (usually under contract in less than 2 weeks)... we're doing a major balancing act here. Can't put the house on the market too soon or we won't have a place to live here in Colorado. But can't buy a house in Maine until the house here in Colorado sells. We'll get a better feel for things as it gets closer, but that also means we're going to freak out a bit more about the timing. Been looking online at housing, but we can't get to Maine until after June 17 to look at homes in person. We're hoping my parents will take a day trip from Pennsylvania and look at them for us if worse comes to worse. *sigh* I wanna scream.

It would be so much easier if it were just me... I'd just throw my crap in my car and whatever doesn't fit I'd sell. Get a place when I get there. But then again, I wouldn't give up my family for anything. 🙁 Need more chocolate. Think I'll bake brownies today while the paint on my closet doors is drying.

you should sell now, and make the turn over date July 1st, you can always bargain for a 30 to 60days to live after you set the deal to sell the house. Since it's already mid may, you need to sell right away.

then use that 30 days to look for the house and buy it, force the other seller to turn over the house within 30 days. also it'll take couple days for the movers to drive 18wheeler to maine, you should be ok.

Hey everyone. Well, since I really really want to go to UNECOM over any of the other schools, I thought it would be a great idea to check out the Osteoblast next Saturday (not a far drive for me). So, I called up and found out that the Dean hasn't decided whether or not to allow accept-space available list people to Osteoblast 😕 Should hear back today or Monday. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and maybe I'll get a chance to see some of you then.
Take care 🙂

You may want to check into bridge loans (eases the stress of having to sell your place immediately so as to be able to buy the next). The stress of buying and selling a house is a drag. Hang in there!!

Please let me know I can help out with the post office box, as I'd be happy to help. I will only be in the area until around June 6th, then its off to residency.

Good luck, and please eat some chocolate for me.

Where are you going for your residency? and what's your rotation block schedule looks like?

I'm going to Georgia for residency.

Not sure whether you're referring to my rotations block schedule for medical school or residency. I finished my last medical school rotation in the end of March. For residency, I start off with a month of orientation, followed by an off service rotation (trauma).

ShyRem,

I am currently going through the same stressors you are, I placed my house for sale and it was sold in 3 hours. That's part of the good news. I've contacted the post office over here and they said that they would hold my mail until I have them release it to the next address. You will not need to get a PO Box unless you desire. It worked for me in the past with my military moves. The only problem is that mail will sit for awhile. I learned the hard way about ensuring bills were taken care of. If you use electronic billing then it makes it even easier, that's what has saved me with moving soo much. If you have any questions regarding moving, please let me know and I will gladly help. Good luck with the parents!

Do you send official transcripts to this address or is there a more specific one?

ShyRem,
Sounds like a crazy week. I am a fellow at the school right now. I am actually a classmate of the famous "Wook" I had posted about our house for sale and thought you might be interested. It is number #639 on this forum. I see you won't be coming till mid June but if you think you might be interested I would be happy to send you some pictures. I saw you have two kids and two dogs. We have three bedrooms and a fenced in backyard. It is a singlefamily attached home, the neighbors are good people. Let me know and good luck with the inlaws. 🙂

Hey Guys,

Since this is just in the early stages, I figure I would get some feedback.

What do people think about another pre-start meeting?

We have a long weekend coming up (20th till 22nd) and I was thinking of driving to Boston, Maine, Montreal. That way I will get a chance to visit again, and maybe move some of my stuff.

Matched in Emergency Medicine ACGME program. The match list will probably be made available later. The general site for the match is located here.... http://www.une.edu/com/clinical/postgrad.asp. Keep an eye for the class of 2006 being posted at some point in the next couple of months. People generally match to the specialty they want. Each class is different, and some years people seem to prefer the different specialties. I'm waiting to see where class members are going.

No we are not set up yet....I think you are referring to Cool Coffee and that is not us. UHC will be located down Lincoln St in the River Dam Millyard and we will open in July. Our coffee roaster is based in the N.West near Seattle and distributes the best coffee I have ever sampled. Pastries will come from the Standard Baking Co in Portland….so our coffee and pastries will be well worth the extra 5 min walk. Cheers, Todd

When you get to this stage, I would say apply to any program in which you are interested, as you may be pleasantly surprised and also don't know until you try. I would agree that there are some programs that do not take DOs (ie DO unfriendly). With that being said, we've had people from previous classes go into many different specialties in competetive programs.

Hey where is the class this weekend. No one is around.

Anyone going to be in Biddeford or Portland this coming weekend?

I plan on hitting up Osteoblast this weekend. I have something going on the in the morning so hopefully I won't have to show up too late. Has anyone heard what is going to be going on after the awards ceremony? The orginial invitation said music and activities or something like that but does anyone have any specifics? Hopefully I'll see many of you there!

Here is an update for the Osteoblast activities this Saturday:

OsteoBlast will be from 12-4pm on Saturday May 20. It will be held on
the Alfond Meadow (on the ocean-side of the main medical school
buliding- Alfond). The basic schedule is as follows:
12-1 BBQ
1-2 Student Government and RSAS (Recruitment Student and Alumni
services) awards- some of these are serious and some are funny,
light-hearted.
2-4 Festival!!! There will be the bands of the MS1s and MS2s. There
will also be activity booths sponsored by the clubs and organizations.
(For example- fruit smoothies, tug of war, volley ball, face painting,
rock wall, and a bounce house!)

Love answering my own posts... I do it all the time.

Official transcripts are sent to:

University of New England
College of Osteopathic Medicine
Att: Dean Kelley's/RSAS office
University Campus
11 Hills Beach Road,
Biddeford, ME 04005

thanks triage for the info.
I don't think we will make it there till afternoon on Saturday, we will see what time we leave.

The awards are at least partly silly. Like who's most likely to be asleep in class, who's most likely to come banging in late, who NEVER seems to leave Alfond, the sexiest medical student. . . that sort of thing.

As far as bands, i'd assume that'd be the second year band "Circle of Willis" and/or the first year band "Somatic Dysfunction." Rock ON. :horns:

I'm going out in mid-June to find a place. When I get a place I will have a room available. I don't know if that will help you since it will be in mid-june, but let me know. The library seemed to be ok.

Hey Ben,
There are a couple of people looking for roommates on the pipeline or the my.une page.
Hope this helps!

Smile,
Michelle 🙂

Anyone here anything about the flooding in NE? Did it hit Portland at all, and if so is there some major damage?
