Hope everyone is doing well.

For those of you who finished first year or more, what do you recommend doing during the summer after 1st year?

Dude/dudette:

Depends.

I made the choice to do some research. They have a really cool biomechanics lab up in Westbrook, so I connected with one of the professors in the PT department and did some research on balance.

Most of my classmates took the summer off to relax. A couple of us did research. I think a couple of folks did some military stuff. A few other folks got some experience in wilderness medicine.

If you are seriously considering academic medicine, then I would suggest taking a look at research.

It would not be fair of me to recommend one way or another as it would depend on what you find fun, and where you think you may be going with your career (although it is probably too early to know what career path you may want...academic vs private practice).

so is there some kinda "shadowing" we can do as med students as well if we are interested in primary care?

n0chi:

During your 1st and 2nd year you spend some time with different preceptors getting exposure to different specialties (including primary care). Additionally, you have the opportunity to spend more time "shadowing" if you like. You would just need to sign up (there are several lists posted for different preceptors) near the family medicine office.

If you are referring to "shadowing" during summer break, I know of several people who shadowed some people that they knew (during their 2nd year), AND got couple weeks of rotation credits for it. You may want to discuss this aspect with the clinical affairs office.

QUESTION FOR MAINE RESIDENTS.

Do you know how to register out of state car in Maine. I am thinking of buying one from Boston. Is it complicated and will I have to pay lots of taxes and registration fees. Sometimes its is less hassel to get in instate. Any idea on this.

Thanks

Hey, I actually did the same thing. If you are buying it from a dealer, have them send a runner to Maine w/ the car, and you can take possession of it in maine. If you buy it in mass, and register it in maine, you will have to pay sales tax when you leave the lot in mass, PLUS sales tax in maine when you register it... they get as much money as they can from you. I made this mistake once... when I transfered my registration from mass to maine. However, w/ my last car, I told the dealer my situation, and they were more than happy to accomodate me. They sent a runner to deliver it in maine, and you only pay the sales tax up here. Hope I wasnt babbling too much. Let me know if you have any more questions.

you guys do know that there is no sales tax for cars in New Hampshire right?.. why buy it in mass.. just buy it in NH. I'm from mass.. and I buy my car from NH 🙂

no tax in NH, the reason I drove to the mac store in Salem to get my new macbook (which is an awesome comptuer by the way if anyone is looking to get out)... gotta love the student discount 🙂

If you register a car from out of state Maine will make you pay a tax based on the value of the car... its basically the same ammount as a sales tax. I think Mass does the same thing. When I bought used cars from the want adds or something I always had to pay a sales tax based on the blue book value of the car. I'm not exactly sure how you buying a car in NH would still be beneficial.

Well that's good news for me, at least. I think my car has a blue book value of something like two bucks.

Slightly off topic, but what year/model car are you getting?

Of course.. when you drive off the dealership lot you'll need to have a license plate and registration, if you first drive it off with NH license plate and registration.. after few month.. move to Maine, and change your registration, you don't need to pay sales tax. (because it's not registration for an additional (new or used) car, but an already existing car that you own and assumed you already paid sales tax for)

however, if you want to drive it off the dealer's lot with a maine plate or mass plate and registration, you'll have to pay sales tax. Since somebody is making money off it, and you're adding a car (new or used) you'll need to pay sales tax.

it's kind of like.. if i live in florida, bought a car there.. 6 month later i lost my job and need to move to another state.. they're not gonna make me pay sales tax again.. for changing the plate and registration because i want to obey the law and operate with the in-state license and registration.

🙂.. i hope this helps. One trick though is that if you want to register your car in NH, you'll need a valid residence in NH (i.e. a billing address in NH from gas company/electric company etc..) that's the tough part.

Are these our clerkships? I'm so excited that we'll be getting clinical exposure right from the start! What kinds of specialties are we going to get exposed to during those first two years and where are they going to be held at?

They're not clerkships,

these are just preceptor experiences, that allows you to sneak-peak and shadow a physician in person. youre real rotation/clerkship comes 3rd and 4th year. Most people if they can time manage well (handling exams, classes, and the boards) they have some free time to do preceptorships. However, if you're not handling the exams, classes, and the boards well.. then.. i would suggest do the school work first.. before you go into preceptorship.. because you'll get plenty of time at the hospital during rotation and residency... 🙂.. enjoy your 1st and 2nd year.

Very true!

As a side note, the preceptor experiences tend to be for 3-5 hours a pop, enough to "shadow" for a bit. I did ok my 1st two years and did some extra clinical experiences. It provided variety and reminded me of why I was doing all this studying.

I wish that was the way it worked but it is not. I have been through this. I owned a car that was registered in mass for 3 years. When I came to register it in maine they charged me a fee that was like 6% of the value of the car... this was on top of the registration and plate fees. Maybe they do not call it a sales tax but that is essentially what it is. I know it sounds stupid... I think it is stupid to, but until you pay the fee they wont give you plates. The fee was like $350 for a seven year old ford taurus worth about 6k.

I'm sorry Shodddy18, that's very unfortunate...i do have one question though out of curiosity. since mass and maine are relatively close, howcome you didn't just stay with mass registration?

It acually worked out for the better. Insurance up here was over $1000 cheaper, so i ate the $300. Plus I have been up here for so long, wanted to get a maine drivers license and what not for residency purposes... has lots of benefits over mass. I actually went to college at UNE, in addition to med school. Once I finnished college and started med school I transfered everything to maine. This helped me qualify for maine medical loans, which were better than the ones from Mass. Since I want to stay and practice in maine there will be more repayment / forgiveness options w/ maine loans.

Sounds like a great plan, and you pretty much have everything figured out. So are you finishing up your 1st year? 2nd? 3rd? or 4th?

I think if i do like staying in Maine... I wouldn't mind going for the forgiveness option for practicing primary care in maine for 5 years.

Hopefully it will work out. I just finnished 2nd year... going to bangor next year for third year rotations.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the feedback and directions. I guess the best thing to do is to register my car (to be) in Maine. Since I will not have any other address other then Maine. ALso being on student visa.. its probably best thing to do... duhhh. BTW. I heard that if you are a student or millitary personal, you don't need to change your registration to the state you live in. Everyone else must.

Steve (2 or 3 if I recall right) I will not be being a bran new car or a dealer car.. at least not the first one. EVEN THOUGH, I would love to get an AUDI A4 or a VW or Civic Sport or even a Carman gua, I think I should wait on that. At least till the first year is over. I will get over all the anxiety and fear of first year.. .then what will another few grant add to my kkk,kkk student loans. Hnnnn you live only once... what is better than living it in an Audi TT. Okay ... also I was thinking.. your gas prices are rediculous.. so maybe not the best idea.

SO yeah.. will post after dinner.. BTW.. thanks again for all the information and help.

i was wondering what you meant by the residency statement. Are there some benefits for having Maine residency in terms of something like tuition, or rotations or anything if you are not a resident and want to become one?

I think he was just refering to State residency and nothing to do with rotations or post-DO residency.

The tuition is the same for everyone (in state or out of state).

To get a Maine Medical loan, you need to either be an instate or attending UNE.

Once you start working and earning money, living in Maine may be negative, since they charge more taxes. At least that is what I understood for internet search!! Correct me if I am wrong.

One last question about car registration.

Does maine have safety or environmental test for cars?

I did not see that anwhere on DMV website. Here, as well as some US states (CA) you need to do safety and environmental tests before you can register a car.

Yeah I was talking about Maine state residency. Having a maine drivers license and residency lets me get insurance up here. Also a lot of other things like fishing permits and less hassles w/ owning firearms and such ( a hobby of mine ).

Yeah, once you register it in Maine you have 7 days to have it inspected. You can get this done at most mechanics. It costs $30. If there is anything wrong you have to have it fixed. I dont think they do environmental tests in maine but I may be wrong. Both of our cars are newer and are up to emission standards. What I mean is that if they were old and didnt pass I would have been told, but since they are not I didnt pay attention. Good luck!

Hey guys. I know that some of you have already read this, but I am desperately looking for a roommate. I have a house on Fortunes Rocks Road that is approximately 1400 square feet. It is a 15 second walk to the beach, with a second floor ocean-view balcony. There is also an awesome little marshland in the huge backyard which has a clear little estuary flowing through it. There is a paved driveway good enough for about three cars as well.
The actual place is FULLY furnished, including a new kitchen, with dishwasher. There is also a washing machine and dryer. I will be living in one bedroom with the queen sized bed, and there is another bedroom with a choice of beds.........you may also bring your own. The living area is upstairs, and there will be xbox 360 for entertainment 😛.
In terms of roommates, I find that I can get along with mostly anyone, so that shouldn't be an issue. The cost will be 400 dollars a month +utilities. Try and beat that! Trust me, this place is paradise.......

Send me an email at [email protected] for information, pictures, or deposit info.

Sincerely,
Ryan Zwerin

I actually had another question for any current students that might be reading this. The house I am looking for a roommate for is not available for me to move in to until labor day. Does anyone know of motels or anything in the area that might house a student for a month? Thanks.

Sincerely,
Ryan Zwerin

ok, sorry to keep bothering the thread..........since I can't move in until labor day, I think the best option would be for me to stay in someone's place for a month or so..........I will pay top rent. If anyone would take me in until labor let me know! The motel prices are absolutely crappy :-(

Hullo Everybody!
It has been a while since I've posted anything. Thought I would chime in and say that I'll be leaving for Alabama on Tuesday for 4-weeks of fun at USAF commissioned officer's training. After that, back here to move on up to Biddo! Then...live life to the fullest until 07 August hits us head on and without remorse. Okay, anyways, I'll try to keep up with the forums while I'm away.
Cheers,
Steve F.

Ok. I've been moving stuff all over the place for painting, fixing, etc... anyone know when that paperwork is due? The health forms and titer results?

Still no word on whether the list moved or not, but I assume its going to a little at least. I am heading up to Maine again this weekend so if anyone wants to get together, let me know. Take care everyone and enjoy the weather. Its BEAUTIFUL!!

So which school are you planning on going? 🙂 I guess it's decision time for most people... another person also dropped to go to Tufts 2010.

I'm not able to complete my immunization by 7/15... So i'll have to turn in my forms probably when school starts 🙁

It was a hard decision because I fell in love with UNECOM when I interviewed there, but I'm a Boston girl and Tufts was calling to me.

hehe.. it wasn't hard for me not to choose tufts..because I went to Tufts undergrad and graduate, and have two friends who graduated from Tufts Med... I grew up in boston..I felt like I need the change. Away from Tufts, and Boston.

But Good luck though. Tufts is a good school.. I'm a double Jumbo myself.. so I can say that. 🙂 😉

Ok. I'm goin' to the lab tomorrow to get titers for my MMR, varicella, and hepB levels. I'm searching for my childhood immunization forms for the polio. I'm goin' to the health dept tomorrow to get the lovely ppd skin test and a tetanus booster. I've gotta call my doc for a physical anyways, so I'll get that paperwork done too.

Am I missing anything? Besides my brain these days? I think I painted it onto the baseboards last night.

you might also want check your Small Pox history, and request transcripts from all the previous institutions you attended to be sent to the Office of RSA.

Thanks! I'll hit websites ASAP for transcripts.

Smallpox? Hmm... I might have had that one. When did they stop giving that out?

I believe that was 1971 or 1972....Just checked on the CDC site they stopped in 1972.

By the way, you may have just dated yourself!!

Wook

PS Yes, I had the vaccination!!

I freely admit I graduated high school in 1984. I won't have the scar from smallpox vacc, tho - I've had extensive reconstructive surgery on my left arm that entailed several (to put it mildly) scar revisions and skin grafts. Hmmm... I better find that childhood booklet of immunizations. *sigh*

If it makes you feel any better.. prob won't... but I graduated high school in 1994

You should let them know, just so you don't run into a problem. I believe the form said that you would not be able to get grades until your immunizations were complete. Not sure though, I will have to look that up for you.
I wouldn't sweat it too much though!

you just need to get them done before you go on preceptorships...I did all of mine at the school clinic during lunch breaks with no problem.....definintely dont sweat it.

You also DO NOT need the fancy computer they "require"...I bought one and never needed it...I have many friends who easily used home computers or just used one of the many on campus. Any old laptop will do.

Have fun while you still can.....
