Hope everyone is doing well.

For those of you who finished first year or more, what do you recommend doing during the summer after 1st year?

Depends.

I made the choice to do some research. They have a really cool biomechanics lab up in Westbrook, so I connected with one of the professors in the PT department and did some research on balance.

Most of my classmates took the summer off to relax. A couple of us did research. I think a couple of folks did some military stuff. A few other folks got some experience in wilderness medicine.

If you are seriously considering academic medicine, then I would suggest taking a look at research.

It would not be fair of me to recommend one way or another as it would depend on what you find fun, and where you think you may be going with your career (although it is probably too early to know what career path you may want...academic vs private practice).

During your 1st and 2nd year you spend some time with different preceptors getting exposure to different specialties (including primary care). Additionally, you have the opportunity to spend more time "shadowing" if you like. You would just need to sign up (there are several lists posted for different preceptors) near the family medicine office.

If you are referring to "shadowing" during summer break, I know of several people who shadowed some people that they knew (during their 2nd year), AND got couple weeks of rotation credits for it. You may want to discuss this aspect with the clinical affairs office.

Do you know how to register out of state car in Maine. I am thinking of buying one from Boston. Is it complicated and will I have to pay lots of taxes and registration fees. Sometimes its is less hassel to get in instate. Any idea on this.

Hey, I actually did the same thing. If you are buying it from a dealer, have them send a runner to Maine w/ the car, and you can take possession of it in maine. If you buy it in mass, and register it in maine, you will have to pay sales tax when you leave the lot in mass, PLUS sales tax in maine when you register it... they get as much money as they can from you. I made this mistake once... when I transfered my registration from mass to maine. However, w/ my last car, I told the dealer my situation, and they were more than happy to accomodate me. They sent a runner to deliver it in maine, and you only pay the sales tax up here. Hope I wasnt babbling too much. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Of course.. when you drive off the dealership lot you'll need to have a license plate and registration, if you first drive it off with NH license plate and registration.. after few month.. move to Maine, and change your registration, you don't need to pay sales tax. As a side note, the preceptor experiences tend to be for 3-5 hours a pop, enough to "shadow" for a bit. I did ok my 1st two years and did some extra clinical experiences. It provided variety and reminded me of why I was doing all this studying.

Sounds like a great plan, and you pretty much have everything figured out. So are you finishing up your 1st year? 2nd? 3rd? or 4th?

I think if i do like staying in Maine... I wouldn't mind going for the forgiveness option for practicing primary care in maine for 5 years.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the feedback and directions. I guess the best thing to do is to register my car (to be) in Maine. Since I will not have any other address other then Maine. ALso being on student visa.. its probably best thing to do... duhhh. BTW. I heard that if you are a student or millitary personal, you don't need to change your registration to the state you live in. Everyone else must.

Steve (2 or 3 if I recall right) I will not be being a bran new car or a dealer car.. at least not the first one. EVEN THOUGH, I would love to get an AUDI A4 or a VW or Civic Sport or even a Carman gua, I think I should wait on that. At least till the first year is over. I will get over all the anxiety and fear of first year.. .then what will another few grant add to my kkk,kkk student loans. Hnnnn you live only once... what is better than living it in an Audi TT. Okay ... also I was thinking.. your gas prices are rediculous.. so maybe not the best idea.

I think he was just refering to State residency and nothing to do with rotations or post-DO residency.

The tuition is the same for everyone (in state or out of state).

To get a Maine Medical loan, you need to either be an instate or attending UNE.

Once you start working and earning money, living in Maine may be negative, since they charge more taxes. At least that is what I understood for internet search!! Correct me if I am wrong.

One last question about car registration.

Yeah I was talking about Maine state residency. Having a maine drivers license and residency lets me get insurance up here. Also a lot of other things like fishing permits and less hassles w/ owning firearms and such ( a hobby of mine ).

Yeah, once you register it in Maine you have 7 days to have it inspected. You can get this done at most mechanics. It costs $30. If there is anything wrong you have to have it fixed. I dont think they do environmental tests in maine but I may be wrong. Both of our cars are newer and are up to emission standards. What I mean is that if they were old and didnt pass I would have been told, but since they are not I didnt pay attention. Good luck!

Hey guys. I know that some of you have already read this, but I am desperately looking for a roommate. I have a house on Fortunes Rocks Road that is approximately 1400 square feet. It is a 15 second walk to the beach, with a second floor ocean-view balcony. There is also an awesome little marshland in the huge backyard which has a clear little estuary flowing through it. There is a paved driveway good enough for about three cars as well.
The actual place is FULLY furnished, including a new kitchen, with dishwasher. There is also a washing machine and dryer. I will be living in one bedroom with the queen sized bed, and there is another bedroom with a choice of beds.........you may also bring your own. The living area is upstairs, and there will be xbox 360 for entertainment 😛.
In terms of roommates, I find that I can get along with mostly anyone, so that shouldn't be an issue. The cost will be 400 dollars a month +utilities. Try and beat that! Trust me, this place is paradise.......

hehe.. it wasn't hard for me not to choose tufts..because I went to Tufts undergrad and graduate, and have two friends who graduated from Tufts Med... I grew up in boston..I felt like I need the change. Away from Tufts, and Boston.

But Good luck though. Tufts is a good school.. I'm a double Jumbo myself.. so I can say that. 🙂 😉

I'm goin' to the health dept tomorrow to get the lovely ppd skin test and a tetanus booster. I've gotta call my doc for a physical anyways, so I'll get that paperwork done too.

Am I missing anything? Besides my brain these days? I think I painted it onto the baseboards last night.

you might also want check your Small Pox history, and request transcripts from all the previous institutions you attended to be sent to the Office of RSA.

I freely admit I graduated high school in 1984. I won't have the scar from smallpox vacc, tho - I've had extensive reconstructive surgery on my left arm that entailed several (to put it mildly) scar revisions and skin grafts. Hmmm... I better find that childhood booklet of immunizations. *sigh*

you just need to get them done before you go on preceptorships...I did all of mine at the school clinic during lunch breaks with no problem.....definintely dont sweat it.

You also DO NOT need the fancy computer they "require"...I bought one and never needed it...I have many friends who easily used home computers or just used one of the many on campus. Any old laptop will do.
