Congratulations to all of you accepted to UNECOM for the Class of 2011!!
If your hearts are set on attending UNE then its time to kick back and relax a bit, you've made it! You'll receive some mailings sometime in late winter/early spring time. Until then, make sure you've paid your deposits to secure your seat. If some of you are still in undegrad/grad school or whatever and are going to be graduating in May then start dropping hints to your loved ones about gifts like stethoscopes and otoscopes 😉
If you could squeeze in an anatomy & physiology course or something along those lines during your spring semester I highly recommend it.
I agree with DocBill, enjoy your free time now. Plan a vacation before you make the move up here. Travel cross country, visit the Grand Canyon, skydive, I dunno, whatever you find interesting and fun. Anyways, feel free to pm me or im me via AIM with any questions, comments, concerns, suggestions, etc...

Does anyone know how and when they disburse the money that we get from loans. From my understanding, it all goes into your account and you use the account to pay for tuition and your expenses (everything indicated in the budget). Also, I think they disburse this money the first day of classes. So, this may pose a problem since we must pay for housing, supplies, make various payments, etc... Any ideas? Thanks.
 
True. Your check is deposited electronically if you've set that up well ahead of time, or it's mailed to you if not. I got mine via snail mail by the third day of class I think. So yes, you do need to bring some extra money to get things "set up". Don't worry too much about books that early - getting books when you get your loan money is plenty soon enough. Many of us wait to see what we actually need and purchase books througout the semester.

Thanks! I'll have to take out a loan before my loan. Ugh! When's a good time to look at housing? I'm planning to come up towards the end of January.
 
I am Stacey from RI.....I was accepted about a month ago and now it's time to make my decision between UNECOM and PCOM....I'm soooo torn but happy to have been accepted at both!!!!
 
I would try to avoid waiting until Summer... there are quite a few seasonal rentals here for vacationers. I bought a house, so I don't know exactly the timing on getting a rental year-round (the seasonals aren't available for winter rental until after labor day). Now having said that, there are LOTS of folks in my class that got in off the waitlist over the summer and found housing.
 
Have you decided between PCOM and UNECOM? I am in the same position and need to make a decision by the end of the week!
 
Same place you sent all your other stuff. I sent mine to the admissions office with a little note on it. It got applied just fine.

I might be going to UNECOM next year, but I'm trying to decide between here adn NYCOM. Anyone want to try to sway me one way or another?
 
My fiance and I are going up to Maine over Christmas to visit his family. Would I be able to get a look at the campus? I know students and faculty won't be there, but I'm just wondering if the buildings are open. I'm applying next year and UNECOM is my top choice based on location/reputation/curriculum, so I just want to get a look at it.
 
Does anyone know the minimum specs for a laptop at UNE? If so, what are they. Thanks!

P4, or P-M (centrino), or Duo Core at 1.6ghz or above.
at least 512MB ram, 1GB preferred
at least 30 GB hard drive, (60GB recommended)
must have 802.11b but 802.11b/g is preferred for wireless networking
must have DVD/CD-RW combo drive, DVD-RW optional
must have ethernet port
must have at least 32MB of vram for graphics card
must have minimum resolution for LCD to display 1280x1024 up to 1600x1200 (SXGA,WSXGA,or WUXGA) NO XGA or VGA
must have Windows XP Professional SP2 (NO Windows XP Home edition because bad for networking configuration)
USB flash memory key is recommended
McAfee 8.x virus software (REQUIRED and can be d/l from UNE)
 
Any virus software program will do. I hate McAfee and my computer passed the "do you have antivirus software" test just fine to access UNE's network (yes, they check electronically). I would recommend something portable - you'll be wanting it for class quite a bit of the time. And for a few of your classes, you'll be required to bring your computer to class. For some of your classes, you'll be wanting to bring it to check mail, IM friends, check news, etc. to pass time in the few "required attendance" classes that aren't very heavy in the note-taking part.
 
don't worry about Computer and laptop just get a newer one... if you have one that is a year old you should be fine as well.

I took in my 4 years old gateway and it worked just fine.. then took in my new mac and it worked just fine as well. Only difference... one is lighter (okay and mac needs some time to adjust to it).

I would ask for a laptop for christmas and also stethoscope, pressure cuff, the thingy that lights the ear and eye.. whatever its called... SHYREM would know she is smart. Also I would ask for a vacation and a whole bunch of fun stuff.. travel.. play.. enjoy life.. etc... cause remember what I said.. once your here... there is no going back.
 
So I'm trying to decide if I should go to UNE or not. During 3rd year, I know that you can choose which of the affiliated hospitals you want to do your rotations at. Honestly, the only one that interests me are teh Newark rotations, since I would want to work in a city one day, maybe NYC. Anyway, I know they said at my interview that the Newark site usually goes to a lottery, which is what makes me a bit nervous, since that is the only city type rotations tehy have.

So does anyone know how big the lottery usually is for the Newark site? I don't want to compete with 50 people for 10 spots, say. Of course, I'm sure it varies from yaer to year, but just a general idea.
 
I just wanted insight from current students regarding what classes you think are most valuble to take before starting in the fall. I am currently signed up for embryology and genetics (both just to prepare...not because I need them) and I was wondering if those were good choices or if there are better ones or if I need to take any classes to "prepare" at all. I personally am not looking forward to taking genetics, so I was wondering if that is necessary or not. If not, do you think there are other classes that would be good to take in my last semester. Thanks!

Immuno. I didn't have embryo and did just fine. Immuno is kicking my a$$. More likely I'm just scared of the one and only test upon which our entire grade is hinged for that class. But I still wish like hell I'd taken immuno in undergrad.

Bill, so dramatic, I love it. Seriously people, any mainstream laptop that can handle powerpoint, AIM/MSN/Yahoo messenger, and an internet browser simultaneously will serve you quite well here. Built-in wireless is a bonus, less dongly things to have protruding from your laptop. Oh, and lightweight, textbooks are heavy enough as is so aim for something under 5lbs. Apple, Dell and Sony have some nice laptops that are compact and still kick butt in performance. Plus, Apple and Dell offer educational pricing to students. I think Sony might offer a discount...not too sure though. Why worry too much about these things now, its the holiday season! Oh, if you are a PC person, Windows XP Pro is recommended, you will have to download the anti-virus offered by the computer help desk here on campus (its FREE). Anyways, you've just negotiated the most challenging hurdle: getting accepted into MEDICAL SCHOOL!!! It will sink in eventually, I promise. 😉 So, yeah um...enjoy your time, go travel around the world, or stay home and relax.

Ophthalmoscope/Otoscope sets are good to ask for in addition to the above mentioned items.

I would suggest an Anatomy & Physiology course. I took a full year of A&P as a requirement for PT school, really helped me out with Gross Anatomy back then. I have a question for you, what is your background in? Biology? English? Underwater basket weaving?

Smart alex... you know the name of the lighty eye and ear thingy. That will surely impress the new kids on the block. I am always going to refer to it as expensive flashlight for eye, nose, ear... EFENE

You will need something to chat with people while in class.. so make sure you have that. Fozzie and I have camera built in our Macs so we can have live face to face conversations with others... or when in class they can talk and you can type them with MSN ...

You will definitely need build in wireless... recall MSN.. chatting.. shopping online.

Don't need books... just take labtop... I realize that Books too heavy to bring with us. You will need the Board Review Books. They are great (but don''t buy them now).

----- HAAAA the hardest thing you negotiated is getting in to medical school. It is A TRAP.. RUNNNN .. hehehehe.. no having kids is probably the hardest ever.. that is why Shyrem is so cool under pressure.

Regarding the Newark, NJ slots....

I just went looking for the exact numbers when I was a med student and couldn't find them. I purged my computer of many of my e-mails, and files.

To the best of my recollection about 3 years ago when I went through the lottery it was 20-25 slots with about the same number of people applying. I can't speak about previous years or subsequent years on how many people applied for the slots. You could try contacting the RSAS office. If you want, PM me and I'd be happy to call and gab with the folks at that office (RSAS) and then post the reply (I'm having trouble keeping up with the forums in my old age, I caught this one cause Shy typed my name in the message).

haha, I'm actually a nutritional science major so I have needed to take all of the required classes but no extra biology classes. i just thought I would see what would help out the most that isn't in my curriculum for preparation.
 
okay, so i've taken an anatomy and physiology course and am currently signed up for genetics and embryology. should I drop those and just take immuno? what about histology? the honest reason why i'm so concerned.....it's my last semester at Penn State and i don't want to be overwhelmed but I also want to be prepared for medical school. thanks for all your help guys!
 
Immuno. Histo is going ok so far. Embryo was ok without prior class.

Immuno. three words describe this class: KILL ME NOW. Thus the reason for me highly suggesting an immuno class before you get here.

Good! I'd say stick with genetics and maybe go for immuno instead of embryo. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being "shoot me now", embryo ranked about a 2, immuno ranks about a 4, gross...well, depending on experience anywhere from 7-10. Your background should have you well prepared for biochem. If you can enjoy your last semester by taking a couple chill courses and a couple of the above mentioned courses, that'd be the way to go. 😀

Ah, now here's where you have to realize that everyone has their "kill me now" course. For some that would be gross (I personally enjoyed gross... except for head & neck lectures and lecture exam). I'd MUCH rather do gross again than struggle through immuno. 🙂 At least I can see what I'm supposed to be learning in gross.

I agree with Steve, tho - pick up that shiny eye thingy... or the cool triangular hammer thing that makes your leg do stuff all by itself. Do NOT, under any circumstances, do any extra work other than for classes you're already taking. At most you'll pick up a week of information. Not worth it.

Oh, I feel so special now. I'm added to the list, I feel like I belong somewhere now! And NYCOM doesn't even have a class thread. Maybe I'll start one, but I don't want to start one unless i know I'm going there. Ah, the torment continues. Yesterday, I was sure I should go to NYCOM. Today, I feel like I should go to UNE. How about one week at NYCOM, one week at UNECOM?

Yep, I remembered after I posted that there was one a while ago, so I tried to find it again. Is it bad to admit that I cannot make up my mind? Whichever school's website I'm reading is the one that I'm leaning towards at any time? Like just now, I was looking over the UNE website, and I thought, gee, I really would like to go to UNECOM over NYCOM, but when I was looking at the NYCOM website, I think, NYCOM really is probably the better place for me. I just can't figure it out, I'm thinking of flipping a coin.

Do a comparison with criteria or use Depakote's spreadsheet. What is going to solidify it for me is the revisiting of the schools.

I did. THey came out pretty much tied. I don't remember the exact numbers, but it was something like 13.7 to14.2. So that didn't help me much. How are you visiting? Are you just calling them and asking if you could arrange for a second look, or are you just showing up and poking around the campus on your own?

NYCOM is easy enough for me to get to, <1 hour drive, but for UNE, I would need to take more time off work since it's a 6 hour drive, and since I'm planning htis huge Europe trip before I start school, I kind of need all the money I can get. Maybe I'll try the magic 8 ball.

Yeah, I'm going to call them up to see if I have a guide. If not, then I'll meander through the campus myself. It would be nice to sit in on some classes though.

I know what you mean by the money issue, but if it allows me to decide, so be it. I'd rather do that than spend more money for another deposit in order for have more time.
 
Hema, we have applicants and potential applicants sitting in on classes all the time. Last week we had three sitting in one day. Not an interview day either. On Thursdays it's not uncommon for half the applicants to come early and sit in on class in the mornings. Call admissions and ask.

Really - one of those there sphygmomamommomemeters?? How are we s'posed to buy something we can't say?? Hmm - guess I'd better get used to it for a while....

So - someone with NO science background should be taking.... everything? Immuno, A & P, etc., etc.... ??
