*^*UNECOM Class of 2011*^*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone else start to find housing? I am looking for a place on the shore for me, my girlfriend and my two chesapeake bay retreivers. I am spending 1200 month for a 3 bedroom with 12 acres in the mountains right now and I am willing to take out enough loans to live comfortably while I go to school. I have been using the link on the UNE page and looking around but it looks hard to find a place in biddeford pool that takes dogs. Anyone have any ideas? Are you going to visit soon and scope out housing? If leases start sept 1st what will you do for aug? I just want space, a yard for the dogs, and no roomates....

Hi Dave,
I have a personal friend who works at UNE in Student Affairs I'll post her name and contact info. If there is a place she would know! Tell her Jason referred you.

Seeking Roomate

Dear Fellow UNECOM 2011 students, I am looking for someone to share a 2 bedroom apartment together with, preferably in Biddeford Pool.

PM me if you are interested.

I don't smoke, do drugs, or participate in the sale of firearms, narcotics, or prostitution.

you shouldnt list all of the bad things about yourself when looking for a roommate. I mean come on, you guys are starting med school, you need some sort of excitment in your life! Even if it is vicariously through a roomie!!!

Just kidding!

I just got my acceptance letter today.

I'm really looking forward to meeting and working with everyone!

I'm a true Mainer living in Saco, if I can help anyone with anything related to Maine please let me know. I'll be happy to do what I can. I did live in Honolulu for two and a half years before returning home last year, so if you are also interested in catching a few waves before class starts let me know about that too!
See you all soon!
~Jason

Are you who I think you are? Last name begin with a D? Same SN as your AIM name... undergrad at UNE... EMS club??? I thought so. Congrats on the acceptance!

Hey guys,

I am planning to attend UNECOM if I do not get accepted to UMass. In the mean time, what should I start doing now? I already paid my first tuition installment. Should I start to fill the Fafsa? and Is it binding? If yes, then do any of you guys know what is the last date that I could do my financial aod stuff without being hurt for lateness?

I would appreciate your inputs. Thanks In Advance!

fill out your FAFSA and list both schools. No problem. The FAFSA is not a binding document - it is merely for consideration for federal financial aid money.

Hey gang,

Congrats on getting in. You're going to the best COM out there so be proud of yourselves.

I'm a third year and I own a house in Biddeford, right down the street from UNECOM. I rent only to UNECOM students as they are the only ones I trust.

The house is at 81 Clifford Street in Biddeford (feel free to mapquest it). It's a quiet neighborhood and the houses are not too close to each other. There is a huge back yard, 2 car garage, washer/dryer in laundry in basement, 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, living room, study rom, kitchen, dining area, wine cellar and bar in basement, screened porch, and more...

Rent is $450 with sewer and water included, but other utilities are not included.

Feel free to email me with any questions or to have pictures emailed to you or to set up a time to come by and see it ([email protected]).

talk soon,

Romeo

Hopefully I post this reply correctly...I'm new at this. Does anyone else have an interest in Romeo's place? Please post if you do. FYI I'm a 25 year old male....don't have any pets but have no problem if others do.

Does UNECOM have a message board to post for potential roommates/apts?

Ronb Parker and RI Mike,

Hey fellas, I lost your emails when my internet crapped out on me. I want to send you an email about my house for rent.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Whatsup everybody,

To anyone who has facebook, I started a group. Just type "UNECOM" into a search and it should come up. The official name of the group is "UNECOM Class of 2011." Hoping to hear from you all soon!

Thanks for the info bluejuice and the offer. How far is saco in case I want to look there? How much do you pay for what size if you dont mind?

A friend has a house on biddeford pool that is 4 bedroom for 1200 which I am considering-it is at the narrowest point and has the pool and ocean on either side but he says there are some negatives...
1. cold as it is a old cottage and insulation is poor
2. have to move out in the summer and cant rent until labor day
3. no fenced yard for the dogs
4. already furnished-we like our stuff

so, pondering that but who knows.

Also, what about computers? Can we use mac laptops at UNE? If not, what do people think about tablets for class? Shyrem? I would want a mac laptop if we can....

Saco is VERY close. It's the other side of the river from Biddeford -- as in if the river wasn't there, you wouldn't be able to tell you were going from one town to the next.

Computers. You can use what you like. Plenty use macs - I love my tablet. I love the ability of writing/drawing on my screen (especially drawing right on the powerpoints!) and would never do without my tablet at this point. But as I said, many folks use a mac. I hear mac is coming out with a tablet soon... perhaps you can have the best of both worlds.
-Shy

Shy-

remind me to buy you dinner asap when I get to biddeford for all your help and encouragement.

So....tablets? Best brand? What are you looking for? I heard that they are a bit compromised compared to laptops of comparable price (less harddrive space, etc)

I am sure I can search the forum as well...I will do that now as well
dave

Hi!

Romeo- I'm also interested in the house. I tried to email you but my computer said there was a problem with your account. My email is [email protected].

NJ--I'm also interested in the house! I just joined the Facebook group, so perhaps I'll talk to you through that. Feel free to email me at [email protected] or IM me at strawbear25. I'll look forward to hearing from you soon!

Looking forward to seeing all of you in August!

also looking into the macbook. supposedly they are going to update in June so dont buy just yet! 🙂

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for all the advice about supplies, comps, housing, and classes!

Just a quick question- should I wait until school starts ( ah! Aug. 8th!) to buy my supplies? I have already purchased Dorland's Medical dictionary, and have stocked up on Nitrile gloves. I read on a LECOM thread that their stethoscopes are provided. I don't want to spend hundreds on a Littmann III, and then receive it from UNECOM. Are there any supplies that I should definiteyl purchase in advance? textbooks?

Also- in regard to housing, is it better to live with UNECOM students, or would you recommend living with random people?

Final question- when should I start applying for financail aid/loans? Should I wait for a packet from UNECOM?

Thanks so much!

nmed440

you will need your own stethoscope, but not immediately.

Computers: WAIT. Lots of places give deals to students - and I got my Lenovo tablet from the manufacturer in July on MAJOR MAJOR educational sale (as in it was usually $1900+ for the basic model --- I got it on sale for $1495 with free upgrade to 1G RAM, so I spent the extra money on a dock, a bag, extra pens, extra cords, software, etc...). I got the 80 Gig HD. I found an mp3 player particularly helpful for listening to audio recordings of lectures, and I don't think I could have made it through anatomy without my palm pilot (just stuck the ppts on the palm and I could review the ppts ANYWHERE - I also got Netter's on my palm). Lots of folks don't get a palm until 3rd year.

UNECOM will send you a packet of stuff for fin aid - you can also look at the finaid website and look at the link "For COM Students" (or something like that). FILL OUT YOUR FAFSA ASAP.

Housing. I can't give you an answer on this one. I know folks who love living with other students... I have a husband and two kids, so I live with them. 🙂 Personally, I find it helpful to have a life that's NOT med school. It keeps me balanced.

Rumor has it they will release a midsize, probably 10.4 inch 3lbs mini version of the macbook

http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2500

Middle of 2007, plenty of time before school starts.

I'm getting a macbook (not pro) w/ 1GB ram and a multi-button mouse unless they release something better prior to beginning of July.

If you need to use Wins OS, there programs to switch from Mac OS to Wins OS, off hand "Boot Camp" (free) for serious gaming and for leisurely use Virtualization software, Paralles Desktop ($50), Q (free).

I will also be leaving the UNE thread. Good luck to everyone!

Aww to indynshrty & emt2erdoc.. too bad you guys are leaving.
good luck 2 u both

i think I will go tablet pc or tablet mac (if they have it) when the time comes-all laptops become ordinary pretty quickly, so having a tablet will keep it fresh, unique, and have a lot more classroom function. After reading threads on the pros and cons I think I will go this route. I had biochem at CU last year and it was all on powerpoint and it sucked printing off the lectures to put in a three ring and then write all over later-then have them rip out of the 6 inch thick binder-instead I will probably take notes on the powerpoint in class and be done with it. I write faster than I type. In fact this post took me 45 minutes to write....😀

Has anyone found a place to live yet?

I find vacant areas, but not suprisingly they won't hold it for me till school starts. Do I wait till May, go to Maine and find a place to rent? That seems to be my only option.

I filed my FAFSA and IRS 1040 form, both confirmed to be complete. Now what? Dean Kelly says that she will be mailing stuff febuary and on....Anyone recieved something from Une yet?

Yes, I received a letter in the mail (small envelope) last week with instuctions on how to sign up on "My UNE". I'm eager to receive more info....

considering last adcom meeting people got actual acceptance letters, I'd say the "space available" is myth. there is still room.

considering last adcom meeting people got actual acceptance letters, I'd say the "space available" is myth. there is still room.

I would agree because I just got an interview 2/13, a week after my application was complete.

haven't been really super paying attention to the discussion about the whole accepted space available, but I wanted to paste this from UNE...
_______________________
Is the class full? How long does UNECOM interview?

In a technical sense, the class isn't considered full until lectures start the morning of August 8 (following two days of orientation). While the number of acceptances offered is slightly more than the number of seats in the class, accepted candidates - even those who have submitted their deposits and other matriculation materials - occasionally make the decision to withdraw from the entering class. This balance between acceptances offered and deposits received changes every week, meaning there may actually be more seats available in March than there is today.

Knowing this, the Admissions Committee will continue to interview candidates through early April. As we move into these last few months of interviews, strong candidates are likely to be offered what we term "Accept Space Available" letters. Such a letter, and status, means the Admissions Committee recommends acceptance, but the number of acceptances (both pending and already deposited) is currently larger than the number of seats in the classroom. As seats become available, and I indicated above they surely would, select "Accept Space Available" candidates are offered full acceptances. This can happen as early as March, and all the way up to the first day of classes.

Hey Everyone.

I’m Mike, 23 years old, from Providence, RI. Graduated from Boston University in 2005, and am serving my second-year as an AmeriCorp/HealthCorp-Diabetes Educator at a local community health center, as well as, working at Brown University School of Medicine as a Research Assistant for a Smoking Cessation Study. For the past two years I have been living back home with my family, which includes two terrorizing teenage sisters, who I love dearly, but are driving me insane. Therefore, I am really excited and looking forward to moving to Maine and starting school up in August with the rest of you guys. I recently sent in my first-tuition deposit and have begun checking out the UNE off-campus housing lists. I will be moving to Maine by myself, and am definitely looking for roommates.
I am heading to Biddeford to look at some housing areas this Saturday. I will be checking out Romeo’s house, which looks nice from the pics he sent. Anybody else interested in his house? Anybody else looking for roommates?

Hey Mike,
Seems like you have had some pretty cool experiences post-college. But like most of us at least, are very excited to take the next step and begin school again. I am actually heading up to Maine this weekend as well, pending the storm we are supposed to get Thursday night into Friday morning. I have talked to a few people on here about rooming together, specifically stawbear25, aka Alexandria in real life, and she is interested. Romeo's place looks pretty cool from the pictures and I can vouch for him being a really nice guy having met him last year, so if you would be interested in rooming with Alexandria and myself, we can talk about it and possibly set something up. I just would like the master bedroom above the garage :meanie: So if you are interested, drop me a line either on here or on AIM at robparker54. Hope to hear from you.

Hey classmates!

I am 26, female, non-smoker, fairly-neat and I am looking for roommates. I won't be moving until Aug, 1, but I would be willing to look at places, and pay rent to reserve my spot. Ideally, I would like to live w/females, but I am open to male roommates as well. I'm a St.A's alum, and finishishing my Masters at Tufts University School of Medicine. Very down to earth, looking for some laid-back roommates. Living in Boston right now...if anyone is in the Boston area, e-mail me...having a big party sat night, and would love to meet my future classmates!

Please let me know if you are interested! You can shoot me an e-mail at:
[email protected]

I look forward to meeting everyone at orientation 8/6!

Hey, 23 year old male, graduated from city college in NY called Hunter college, reside in NY, NY. I'm about to fall asleep, so I'll wrap this up fairly quickly and edit tomorrow.

I play lots of sports, don't eat junk food, smoke, or drink alcohol (except wine), enjoy spending time both outdoors and in, I don't blast music at home, always use my headphones as to not disturb others, my motto for food is "If it don't move, eat it".

I am too seeking a roomate, I don't care what gender you are, as long as your quite and a nice person, we will get along fine. I speak fluent english and russian, other languages une petite.

Congrats for those choosing to start this fall at UNECOM. Here are a couple of places for rent that I'm posting for a friend. PM me if you're interested with your contact info.

"Room for rent – a beautiful sunny house centrally located close to school, downtown, and grocery with hardwood floors, cozy woodstove study, deck, large yard, laundry, and extra storage space. Plenty of space for privacy and several quiet study areas. Live with 1 or 2 other mature independent medical students.

Attached studio (personal kitchenette and bathroom) with private entrance also available."

Come on you guys...its been too long since anyone has posted anything. Where is the class spirit? Ok, I am a dork, I know. So what has everyone been up to? Any exciting plans for the time prior to the start of class? Anyone planning a trip up to Maine anytime soon? Lets here what is going on. I also have AIM. Name is robparker54. Later

I check this thread everyday but nothing new...thanks for the post...

I have not been shooting heroin but rather working a lot at the addiction recovery center with some that do...also, ETOH, meth, etc....interesting stuff-most of the time when not slow...

I am trying to telemark a lot but I smashed my knee into a stump and nearly fractured by patella-radiologist says no fracture but wanted to do a MRI- I decided not too as sx decreasing and swelling is going down.

Starting to paraglide as the temps in Boulder increase- thinking of a way to get $5000 to buy a paramotor so I can fly on the Maine coast-I cannot deal with no flying through med school....

The famous Nederland Dead Guy Days are this weekend-I will go check that out:
http://www.nederlandchamber.org/FrozenDeadGuyDays/
guy has been on ice for a while here in town....

Getting excited to go to school but really nervous too. I have not been too academic in a long time.

Plans for the summer-wedding X2, trips to utah for mtn.biking, flying in Idaho, small trips here and there with as little work as possible. I plan I packing the moving truck late june and driving to Maine first week in July.

Plans for next week- backcountry skiing in Jackson Hole with a friend for a week. I hope they get some snow-has been consolidated for a while I here. Hoping to ski the middle teton.

well, thats what I am up to. let me know what you are all up to-we have a lot of time to kill before school.
dave

Damn dgriss (Dave?) you do alot of activities, no wonder your hair stands up like its been through a category 5 hurricane.

Lets see, I do grocery shopping, play tennis, walk my dog, visit SDN couple times a week, and other exciting activities lol.

Has anyone OFFICIALLY signed a lease yet? Prolly not, too early. I hope there will still be vacant places around April-May, I'll prolly go to Maine then and pick out a place, take pics, then pray some1 will be my roomate and pay 50% rent.

There should be vacant places... several of the current MSIs have been moving into houses lately. And there are "for rent" signs EVERYWHERE.

Hey guys. Yes, I feel very boring compared to Dave! I've just been working at the hospital doing x-rays and transcribing the ER med recs. Nothing too exciting. I actually just took a last minute trip to Maine on Thursday by my lonesome. I was in Boston for a job that morning, got out early, and said, "What the heck! It's a beautiful day for a drive to Maine!". So I poked around for the afternoon, got in to look at one apt, found a wicked nice little sandwich shop down the road from UNE, drove around Hills Beach and B-Pool and had a big dopey smile on my face the whole time! Oh, it's so beautiful there! I can't wait to start, but I am very nervous as well.
Against better advice, I have decided to buy a few books for school and read a bit. I tend to have a lot of down time at work (I work the night shift, so from midnight-8am during the winter on the Cape, not too much is going on!).
I hope to be taking another trip up to UNE this weekend (Happy St. Patty's Day :luck: !) with my boyfriend to sweet talk him into this cute apt I looked at...(cute meaning cute, but also way too small for two people...but I will compromise for the ocean view, beach access, and close proximity to school...I hope he will). I'm going to try to set up some appts to look at other places as well. Let me know if anyone else will be around next weekend. I would love to meet up for a drink!
Smiles 🙂 ,
Kristin
