Univ. St. Augustine...what are your thoughts?

i just finished a tour of the facilities in the san diego campus and talked over my transcripts and applications hoopla.

i'm curious to know what people think of the school either campus would be great info. how is the faculty, mode of instruction, availability and accessibility of profs, etc?

The campus is great..everything is new..the professors are all pt's and have been for years..very strong staff..the program is extremely difficult..they are very strict on professionalism..and i mean..VERY..no flip flops..heavy makeup..scruff..etc..etc..but it keeps the school nice. the days are long and a lot is expected of you! the only complaint i would really have is that the library is only open till 9 and its closed most saturdays?..theres no food on campus and limited internet access!..but they are still building and trying to work the kinks out!..overall it is a great school and I am learning more than I could imagin..it is a shorter program than most so you learn things a LOT faster..which for me is a little tuff! we learn all of anatomy in 1 trimester..whereas most schools learn it in 2!..so dont expect to have a social life or job..but if you want an excellent education..this is the place!..let me know if you have any other questions!

I heard it was a great program. My classmate's boyfriend goes there, and he started two months after we did but will finish at the same time.

Yeah its definetely the place to go if you want to finish quick! And it is a great program I love it, but its extremely difficult and intense!
Do you know what term he is?
Where do you go if you dont mind me asking?

He should be in his final year...His name is Marcus...I'm attending University of Mississippi Medical Center just started my 3rd year...Same here as far as difficulty and intensity but it wouldn't be a DPT program if it wasn't difficult and intense...Is it true you guys don't dissect cadavers?

That is negative information!
We definitely dissect..we have a whole trimester of biomechanics with a lab which is soley based on cadavers! I would be bummed if we didnt! its second trimester..im first trimester so I just get to smell them in the dry lab all day! I dont think you can have a truly successful program with out cadavers it is a whole different world looking at muscles on a model vs. in a cadaver!
Your definitely paying for a better education at this school..it is extremely expensive but it is a private school which gives you the best of the best education that is for sure!

Ok that makes sense...when I first heard it it didn't make sense for you guys NOT to have one, but it's good that you guys don't miss out on that experience...like you said no model or book can compare to actually staring at a real brachial plexus or short head of biceps femoris let alone dissecting it out for yourself. As a matter of fact, two years later I'm still visualizing muscles, nerves, and bones from the cadavers I dissected...So it's definitely the best learning experience when it comes to understanding and learning parts of the body...But good luck to you in your studies...remember there IS a light at the end of the tunnel so stay positive...

i'm currently trying to find a little more information of the university itself so i have some ammo for the essay about why i chose st. augustine. i did love the facilities. i guess its still brand new essentially so it must be nice.

i also agree about the cadaver part of the learning process. i had thought about applying to the Franklin Pierce's DPT but they use NO cadavers what so every! i couldn't believe it. how can you really get a grasp on how the body moves and works if you don't get in and get your hands dirty! well, at least the gloves dirty.

the woman i spoke with was very encouraging to me and advised me to get my application in by the 15th, since i told her i was considering postponing because of my low GRE.

there are so many pluses for the school like, its in my home state, in a city i absolutely love, shorter program then most, REAL CADAVERS(haha)...other then costs there are really no negatives about the program. but, the costs are going to be high anywhere.

how are they strict on professionalism? i've heard that they used to require shirt and tie for lectures, is this true? i'm all for professionalism, but i HATE shaving every day! it hurts my sensitive face..haha.

I'm not sure about the tie. (I don't think so) but yeah you have to look professional. (NO Jeans, tucked-in shirt, absolutely no flip flops!!!)

Yeah tell me about it..all I own is flip flops!..I definitely had to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe! You MUST be shaven everyday, No hats, No designs or "fadish" type clothing, no excessive jewelery or makeup, no torn or wholes in your jeans. You can wear jeans with polos or a nice tucked in shirt. There are plenty days where you do have to where full professional clothing which requires ties!!! PLENTY of days! Then everyday you have to change for lab which is strictly a white t-shirt tucked in and solid shorts and you have to change back for lectures!!
what are your stats if you dont mind me asking? I know you said you were worried about your gre, but if it makes you feel better i will tell you I only had a 900!! and you dont have to take the written portion! so as long as you have a solid app meeting all the other requirements I would for sure still apply and they will ask you to retake your gre if they feel it is necessary!

they really only look at your pre req gpa anyway..so as long as that meets I dont think you will have a problem at least getting an interview and for sure just apply with that score! like I said I originally applied with a 780..hahaha..and they put my app on hold and requested that I retake the gre, and then I retook it and only scored a 900! Obviosly not the best standardized test taker(which is kicking my ass in class, because all we do is take exams) but it was high enough to get me in! So you should just beef up your app and resume and your auto and letter of intent and you should be good!

my GRE was below 1000 too. It eve says it in the website that if GRR scores are below 1000 but everything else is strong they'll consider you.
