University of British Columbia Application Thread

Got a waitlisted email.

Does anyone know on average how many people get waitlisted and how many get in off of that? I wish they would tell us our numbers.

Sorry for being a downer in this thread. Congrats to everyone who did get in!

OMG i got in UBC!!!!!!!!!!! was so pessimistic about it being from out of province too! looking forward to meeting you all!!!

im so excited right now that im having trouble reading the admission offer email:laugh: so does anyone know how do we accept the offer ?:xf:

Do we have to pay a registration deposit and when do we choose the STT? (Is it during July 18-21)

It still says my application is under review in SSC, so I guess no registration deposit yet. And yes, we choose STT from 18th to 21st.

sooooo did anyone make a facebook group yet? i dun wanna check this site anymore every hour =P

I got in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!! This is unbelievable. And yes my eyes watered up pretty good. I've always wanted to be a pharmacist and had given up hope after the stupidity I pulled in first year. This is actually my third time applying. For those who did not get in this year, DONT GIVE UP!! I know how it feels to get rejected again and again but once you see the email that I saw today, you'll forget everything and start screaming "YES!!!" repeatedly while fist pumping. Congratulations to everyone who got in. I can't wait to see you all in September. UBC PHARMACY CLASS OF 2015!!!!! 👍

COSIGN 100%. In addition to first year stupidity, I managed to lower the bar some more with a bare 50% in CHEM 233. But yes, determination and eventual, albeit unnecessarily delayed, maturation does pay off. See you in September!
(Another 4 years though, yikes!)

Anybody with information on the waitlist? What are my chances of getting in off of it?

WOOOOOO I GOT IN !@#~@#!@$!@%#@%@t^@

LOL, and I just saw the email after failing my driving road test!@#!@#!

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAAAA

*happy dance*

I'LL SEE ALL YOU AWESOME PEOPLE IN SEPTEMBER!!!!!!!!

I've heard roughly 8-10 people got in last year. This year should be more because higher number of seats = more rejections. I would guess 12-15 people but don't take my word for it. Good luck :xf:

when is the deadline to accept offers?
You'll find this useful:

Please note that registration open dates for 1st year Pharmacy students are July 18th to July 21st. The Undergraduate Admissions Office in Enrolment Services will begin processing your admission later next week (and it may take some days for them to complete the process – please be patient). Once your admission has been processed, you can check your registration date on the SSC (Student Service Centre) and, after that, you will receive an official admission letter from the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

So it's going to be a while before we can officially accept the offer. Students can start rejecting right away though.

I was on the waitlist last year and didn't even get notified about it until a few days after the acceptances were sent out! Just hang tight and try to stay positive. I'm not sure how many people get in off of the waitlist and I don't want to speculate because I have no idea. I waited until the end of August and was then rejected. It really vaires year to year, but now that there is a larger amount of seats, the list should, in theory, move a bit faster than in past years. Try to stay positive!

IN! Look forward to meeting you guys!

Also, like everyone else has said, DON'T GIVE UP. I didn't even get an interview last year!

Hey,

How many of you guys are in province? How many are out of province?

Do you think they'd tell us how many people are on the waitlist if we emailed?

I'm assuming not.

Email said "not at this time", I'm just going to give them a call 2 weeks from now and see how it goes. Good luck to the both of us .

Until then I'll start planning for next year, anyone know any classes I can take to bring up my GPA for ubc pharmacy? It's currently 77%, and I know I can do much better because I've half-assed every single class, learning everything at home right before finals/midterms.

PCAT was 80%ile, also half assed, had a lot of volunteer work including in two pharmacies. I thought interview went well also. I guess my GPA is my problem here and maybe this will be a wake up call for me. Might take the PCAT again just in case.

No more of this

They didn't last year apparently, so you're probably right. Regardless, I think you have a pretty decent chance of getting in. Lurked on this forum for quite a few months now and based on your postings, I would rank you closer to the top of the WL. Best of luck!

Wouldn't worry too much about the GPA, average of the admitted class is around 80% every year. Recommend STAT200 or 203, ANAT390/391 if you haven't done those. If you like multiple choice exams, do MICB202 or PHYL301. Or, try re-taking courses outside of UBC (Langara or what not...)

PCAT can be improved a bit, I did roughly the same as you, but it never hurts to get around 85 (the admitted class percentile) to 90.

Got in too.

Should we post our stats so future applicants can get an idea of what to expect?

That depends, how many of the prerequisites have you taken because that's all they look at. Increasing your pcat might help, but your GPA looks fine. It may have been your interview...I got in and currently sit at a 73

Thanks! My GPA isn't anything to be proud of though. 🙁 And I think I messed up my interview. So I dunno... let's hope so.

I havn't seen anyone here get a rejection, I hope they're not like waitlisting everyone who didn't get a spot.

So just in case I'm reading the e-mail wrong. If we ACCEPT the offer, we don't need to e-mail Margaret anything, right?

I think we should.

Pre-req: 79%
Overall: 82%
4th year student
Pharm experience: 6 months (2 pharmacies)
PCAT: 91 (99 chem)

Applied: Waterloo, UBC, UofA
Accepted: Waterloo, UBC
Pending: UofA

going to: UBC!

Don't worry, not proud of what happened to my marks after first-year, but work with what you have. As people keep telling me, as long as you were being yourself during the interviews, you'll end up doing alright, even if you don't feel that way after walking out of the room.

And about posting a rejection, it's not the "funnest" thing to do, so people tend to just ignore posting it. Either that, or they haven't been all sent out yet. Acceptance or rejection, it's all just a learning experience.

Yeah thanks. I'll try to keep my hopes up. At least I still have UofT, I guess.

I wouldn't go worrying about UoT too early, give it a few days 🙂 Doesn't hurt to start planning just in case, but you know...

Just curious, did those that get accepted get their emails at 12:03 pm?

Yeah... hopefully. I think I'm gonna have to start planning though since Pharm registration here isn't over until the 21st... I probably won't find out about the waiting list until after that right? What do you think?

That would be cutting it short... and would leave me with a month to find an apartment in TO, student loan, etc.

😱

😱

I would imagine Margaret sending out emails in bulk each week..? Med schools seem to do that, but not too sure about that. Maybe another bulk of new offers tomorrow or Monday?

But doesn't hurt to look into the classified now, what could be more exciting 😉. Just have everything ready to go incase you need to utilize your back-up plan.

Im stuck on that decision too Tarnc! I got to make a decision on Waterloo or UBC.

Waterloo's program is so nice cuz they got coop and its really integrated-.-, but UBC pharmacy has a long history and many of the cool pharmacists are here in Van -/- i come to a crossroad ..........

Go to Waterloo. 😉

Just kidding.

I think Waterloo has a better program, to be honest.

But it wouldn't be worth moving across the country to me, in my opinion.

So I would pick UBC over it.

But I guess it depends on what you value more.

I'll say 12-12:05, depending on your email provider.

Oh, okay. Makes sense.

For future applicants, here are my stats. (Reading up on other peoples stats last year really helped me with the whole application process)

Pre-Req GPA: 85% (I got this raised by choosing not to write the pcat and focusing on my pre-reqs)
PCAT: 74% (I chose not to re-write it again so I could focus on my Pre-reqs)
Pharmacy Experience: Zero
Other Experience: Hospital, Work
Interview: Thought I did okay. In my honest opinion, you can't really practice for this. Watch movies, learn some general themes, and become a social butterfly throughout the year. Your ability to communicate effectively and clearly (which you can only gain with time) is the most important, in my opinion.
Application: I had my essays edited at least 50 times. I think they're very important. It's one of your few chances to sell yourself in written form. I also did not fill in every single tab for hobbies, community involvement, etc. I only put the ones that I thought were indicative of who I really was. Honesty is key.
References: I had two wonderful references (I had only known both for 2 months).

Good luck to everyone that's planning to apply in the future! If you need help with anything, don't hesitate to private message. 🙂

I thought this was written beautifully (and truthfully). Just had to quote it again 😀. For future applicants, read this carefully and understand what it means fully. Interpersonal skills 👍

Many different skills are required; First and foremost, interpersonal skills are a necessity, without it you are better off counselling yourself in a dark room lol.

Gatta have great leadership and teamwork skills, blah blah all that stuff that would make you an awesome pharmy

The Waterloo program is very enticing and if I had to choose between UofA and Waterloo, I would've gone there.
It's just much cheaper for me to study at UBC along with my girlfriend being here, it wasn't too hard of a choice to make in the end 🙂

Alright guys, I made our group on FB called UBC Pharmacy Class of 2015!
