University of British Columbia Application Thread

^january one. unless you decided to no score it. because they only take the most recent one. if you put the october one you might screw yourself over by putting incorrect info

as for the transcripts. im sure its something they keep track of on your file.. if it were me i would just walk in with my id and stuff because they could (not sure) give you that (we cant release that info to you over the phone/email bs)

The courses taken into consideration for the admission average is listed on the pharmacy website and I just wanted to make sure something..

the courses listed in pairs (CHEM 233 & CHEM235 and BIOL 201 & BIOC 302)...if you've only completed one of the two then they don't take the one you've completed as part of the admission average?

(taken chem233, not 235; taken bio201 not bioc203 etc.)

Yes, that's right. You have to take all the courses in each pair for the Faculty to include them in your pre-req average.

for the pcat scores, do we need to get them re-sent from pearson, say if we wrote it last june or august or does ubc already have it on file? does everyone elses pharmacy app says that they have not arrived yet after the application is finished?

also, what do you think happens if something doesn't arrive on time, will they call to ask about it or are you not going to be considered at all any more

I actually emailed the Faculty about whether or not those who are re-applying (like me) need to re-send the PCAT scores earlier this week. They said that we DON'T have to, given that the test was written within two years (ie. after March 2009), because they already have a copy of the score already.

Yes, my pharmacy application page says that the PCAT has not arrived yet as well.

Thanls for letting me know, what about your reference letters? Does it say they arrived?

You're welcome!

The statuses for my reference letters are "received." HOWEVER, I actually sent them in just before the Xmas break, so I guess for most people they'll update the statuses as February goes by.

Remember, the the Faculty is "supposed" to have the checklist updated for all of us by March 15th, so I don't think you should worry about the checklist until late February! =)

I see, how long after you sent them did it appear as received? and did you send them with a tracking number or just through regular mail?

Well, I saw the status changed in late-January, so I'd say it took about a month. One of my referees sent the letter to the Faculty by e-mail, and the other reference letter I gave to the Faculty directly.

Why were u rejected the first time around if u dont mind me asking? PCAT? GPA? or bad interview? or combinations of all>? Thanks in advance

Oh, no problem! I think it had a lot to do with the interview, although I felt pretty good about it. I guess if I did a bit better on it, then I believe I would have got in because my ranking was hovering around the cut-off line....

So, because of the close call, I'm trying again this year! =)

I'm sure you are guaranteed in this year, I read one of your previous posts that said you were ranked 154....the increased spots essentially guarantee you a spot

Hahaha, thanks! =)

Well, I was not ranked 154, but I was close to that!

Whats you GPA and PCAT like if agian you dont mind me asking!!😉

Not at all! =)

My GPA was 79.9% and PCAT 99%. I don't know how much the info would help though, because it seems like that they're not overly reliable factors to acceptance.... =/

That is insane!! Your stats are great, what's their problem? Do u have any EC or volunteer??

Hahaha! Thanks for the encouragement PharMarley! =D

On the other hand, I think they're alright, because GPA is WAY more important than the PCAT score. I do volunteer at a couple of places, but couldn't get anything pharmacy-related, which really sucks... =/ I'm definitely hoping I could get a few lucky breaks in my interview this time! :xf:

Let's hope we all get in! =)

if the reference letters stay as not received on feb 28, does the application get thrown out or what happens, anyone ever have this happen

How long have you sent out your reference letters? Did you send them by mail? If it has been for quite some time, you can e-mail the Faculty about whether they've received them or not. Often times, the Faculty would have them but they just haven't updated the statuses yet! =)

Besides, I highly doubt that your reference letter statuses will stay the same on Feb 28, because they would have made updates here and then. IF it does happen, don't worry, because the checklist is not supposed to be "ready" until March 15th! =)

If anyone is interested, I have the Kaplan PCAT Study Guide (2010/2011 edition) for sale for $20. It is a very comprehensive study guide and it includes one full-length practice exam! This book is a great resource!

If you are interested, please private message me and we can make some arrangements.
Thanks!

i agree he said that in a bad way.. *slaps PharMarley's hand* but i also agree you should be littering this thread with your sales. its the application thread.. not even the pcat thread.. and if you're still posting by now they cant even get into this sitting.. in which you should go make a next thread for next year and post it there if you see fit..

I can't wait to meet you in september if you even get it, you sound like you may possibly be a first year student!

P.S. If you are considering a career in pharmacy you might want to be a little more compassionate because not everybody is as fortunate as yourself. Good luck!

did you seriously just say that? i'm not trying to start a flame war but what makes you think hes not compassionate just because he just said what most of us were thinking? and don't go throwing that "if you get in" garbage as though you are better than him. we are all in the same boat. im sorry to hear about your parents, but everyone has their own problems as well. we are all in the same boat at this point and you should treat it as such.

have a nice day

I respect your opinion and yes I just realized that this is an application thread and not the PCAT thread, but all of my books were sold so there are obviously people who are using this thread for all purposes. As they have been used in past years as well, I'm not sure if you are familiar with that. My comment about "if you get in" was not to be disrespectful, becasue I'm not that kind of person, but I did make it quite far into the process last year and was waitlisted until the beginning of septmeber so I was very close and am definately not perfect. I think this is all really ridiculous over a $20 book that is now sold and had nothing to do with you. I didn't realize that you couldn't skip over the posting of my books and continue on, this didn't seem to be a problem in past years. It is unfortunate that the beginning of this thread deterrred some of the returning members because of the arguments, these people had a lot of good information for new applicants which they have now all disappeared. I guess I'll be joining them. Thanks for all your support, its people like you that I look forward to working with. thanks for the concern about my parents, but we all do have our own problems and mine at the time was to sell all my PCAT books and I succeeded. Also, when you speak of compassion, I work in two different pharmacies and and biotechnology lab at the university and you meet a lot of people from different walks of life and i was a little suprised to hear that I needed to start a different thread over a $20 book. I thought we were all in the same boat.

Good luck to you all, I wish you all success!

I'm sorry bcpharmer..

Hey, no prob PharMarley! I didn't mean to tick you off with selling all my books! haha! If you need any help or have questions about the whole pharmacy application process, just let me know. I'm usually in the lab mon-thurs if im not in classes and I know we attend the same school. All the best with everything!

So you applied from ubco while in second year and nearly got accepted?

Ya I did! If you read last years posts, you will see how stressed out it was. haha! I did the interview and got a waitlist email. In the mean time I was accepted to housing at UBC Van and had to meet their payment deadline or give up my spot. Luckily, I got axed by the beginning of september so that I could come back to UBCO. My PCAT score was so bad, haha, I didn't study properly and took too many courses to focus on it. The Collins package that I purchased this year really helped when I wrote it just recently. Hopefully I got a better score, thats what was standing in my way last year, so I was told. Margaret will emailed me later with my scores and that was in fact the area that I suffered in. All the rest were above average! So I guess we will see this year. How do you like UBCO? That campus is sure growing fast!

Ya it would have been nice to have a pharmacy program in kelowna! Looks like you are off to a great start, your stats are pretty solid! Last year my PCAT was a wonderful score of 68 haha! My gpa right now as of last semester is 79, that includes all of the first year pre reqs plus, organic chem, stats, microbiology and biochemistry. The strongest point of my whole application was the application itself and the interview! My average isn't too bad but with the low pcat score it was harder for me to gain acceptance. I was informed by the faculty that my PCAT was not competative enough. Thats not to say that others have not gotten in with lower PCATs though. I thought the same as you that if I aced the interveiw my PCAT wouldnt matter, but that was certainly not the case for me as I was told. I think everyone has a different scenario as far as their application goes and why they did or didn't get in. All you can do is try the best you know how and stay positive! When it comes time for the interview, just be yourself and you'll be just fine!🙂

I'm pretty sure if u got waitlisted last year, u are in for sure this year. Hopefully. Did u write the pcat in january? if so isnt that a bit risky?

How many of you have submitted your application

I'd like to think that may be true, but we'll see! haha! Yes, it is pretty risky writing in Jan. but I knew just by writing the test that I did far better than last year. Thank god for the Collins package!

And to Degree, I submitted application in early Jan. and they have recieved all of my documentation according the the checklist on the application site. All they need now is my PCAT score from this year.

Thanks for you insight, bcpharmer! I have not had a chance to visit the ubc-o campus, but I keep hearing that it's really beautiful! =)

Degree, I've also submitted mine sometime in mid-Jan.

i havent really started yet.. thats how i do.. thank god for reading break

Hey guys! New here with a question.

How did you guys fill out the structured letters of reference. I mean the document leaves practically no room for answering the written question so this may be a stupid question but does it have to all fit on that one page?

I know I am crazy behind on this, but I do have a few references picked out. Just have to get them to fill it out and I plan on dropping them off by hand.

Also from past experience, how likely is it that the faculty will contact your reference? I'm asking because one of my potential references has English as a second language and while they'll be able to write me a good reference I'm not sure if they'll be able to back it up in words over the phone.

Welcome aboard Gladd! =)

The first question is NOT a stupid question. No, your references do not have to restrict their comments on that single page.

Unfortunately, I don't know how likely would the Faculty contact the references.

This makes me feel so much better! I thought I was the only one, lol!
I have really started yet either. I hope finish at least the essays during the break *fingers crossed*

Turns out I was checking out the document on my phone which condensed it all up.

It's actually two pages, leaving enough room for comments so that clears things up!

Thanks.

I have a few questions:

1): For the high school transcript, does it need to be from grade 8 - 12 or only 11 - 12?

2): I was working during the Olympics and Winter-fest and each time, I got a certificate that is given to all the volunteers. Should I add those in the certificate section of the application or are they too general? I am not sure.

3): I dont go to UBC right now and I need to drop off my reference letters. Where exactly do I drop them off? Which building?

Thanks!!

Does anyone know if I need to tell Pearson to send my PCAT scores to UBC again if I've already indicated in the three schools that I want it sent?

In the clubs/member section of the application, is it ok to write down a club you're a member of if you don't do anything there? I'm a member of two clubs at UBC but I haven't been involved with the events at all. Do you think I should put it down anyways because technically I am still a member? I just don't want to leave the space blank.. what do you guys think?

2) I think you should put it down regardless of what it is.. who knows? maybe you're the only person who volunteered at the olympics last year out of all the applicants and that certificate might make you special! 🙂

3) The building you're looking for is the George Cunningham building. Its accross from the UBC bookstore 🙂

I don't think so. If you've indicated UBC as one of the schools where your PCAT score would be sent, then UBC should get it. =)

Can we drop it off anytime? On the weekend?

drop it off when there's people there.. most likely not weekend

This might be a silly question but I'm filling out the "Change of Degree/Program" form on SSC..

I put "Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy" as my first choice but for my second choice..

Why is it that only only "General program" and "Major computer science" is under "Bachelor of Science"?

What about bachelor of science in biology, chemistry, psychology, etc?

Hm... I'm not sure about that... maybe the students wanting to major in General Science and Computer Science can declare their majors using the Change in Program form, but not for other science majors? This isn't a silly question at all! =D

Hmmm..

If we only put pharmacy as the first choice on that form, and leave the second choice blank.. will we be back into our original program if we don't get accepted into pharmacy?😕

Or how does that work...?
