yaa.. i think pharm D is still in the to-go phase ! plus.. i've read this paper long ago.. it's from Nov 2006.. it's outdated ! .... and i'm pretty sure UBC's implementing entry-level pharm D for new students and bridge program for current students too.. !:laugh:

You clearly haven't read the rest of the thread nor have been following it, it hasn't been rejected; in fact, when I went to my interviews at both U of T and Waterloo, they still mentioned the possibility of having the PharmD implemented this year.
yep, they were asked during the interview why there was no response yet from the government for the approval. They weren't positive, but, were somewhat confident that everything will be fine. Worse case scenario, if it gets changed, I'm sure you can take the extra course or two and end up with a PharmD. Having said that, I'm not too worried 🙂

I know that there's been talk for a long time to implement it in Toronto but I havent heard anything for UBC. It would be great if UBC would do that but it doesnt sound very promising right now. If you go to the UBC pharmacy site, this is what it says on the program overview page:

"The program is designed for full-time study. Presently, part-time or "non-traditional" degree options are not available. While pharmacy schools in the United States offer the "entry-level" PharmD degree, the program at U.B.C. will continue to be structured on a post-BSc degree basis."

ALso, the pharmD entry level programs started taking shape in the mid-90s. How is Canada so far behind? And apparently Montreal is the only school that offers it but doesnt accept students from western Canada AND for anyone that is admitted to Montreal, they have to pass a french exam....

lol...false info.. i read your question about pharmd while surfing and remembered that i read a post earlier which explained about this so thought i will share with you. the link is:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=760268

the post by the person gives a source also
hope that helps and now i would realy appretiate if you can edit your post about me lol

Whatever. I never asked anything about a pharmd. And you clearly don't know what's going on with it so your information is false.

UBC website usually updates new info pretty slow .. remember they waited more than 6 months to post the newly implemented MMI format last year... but.. i guess you are partially right.. if it's not put up on the website, nothing is certain yet! I guess we'll find out from the dean during the white coat ceremony.. I'm sure he'll mention about pharm D program on that day since many students show concerns for this topic.. ~ 😀

UBC is usually pretty slow about everything that's why I'm not holding my breath about them implementing an entry-level program anytime soon. Toronto took the intiative and starting talking about having an entry-level pharmD a long time ago and they're about to get one. From what I know, UBC hasn't even started discussing it.

Waitlist has 20% chance, according to upper years that i know
But it might be a bit lower this year, since they accepted 225 already

Damn. I wonder how many people decline.

Thanks for the info though.

Do you have more info....?

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC has passed a resolution to move toward an entry level Pharm D.

NOTHING has been approved by the provincial government, and there was opposition to the entry level Pharm D. According to the Dean, some of those who were in opposition have retired, so that's a good thing for us.

If and when the entry level Pharm D is implemented, upper years and graduates WILL have the chance to upgrade.

The faculty feels that our program is currently similar to an entry level Pharm D with respect to breadth of learning etc, but the Faculty hopes to implement the entry level Pharm D in "the near future".

The above is paraphrased from the minutes of the Dean's Lunch meeting.

My thoughts: keep your pants on. It's not as simple as The Faculty wanting to implement the ELPD. There's a lot more to it than that.

Interesting stuff, thanks for the post.

hmmm anyone from out of province know anything about switching your provincial health insurance, etc?

hey gang, anyone know what easy pharmacy approved electives I can take during the first year? other than clst 301 and fnh 200. thx!🙄

Phil 433 is supposed to be easy.

How about fnh 250? Did anyone take that course yet? I'm thinking of doing that as my elective.

All IHHS XXX courses are extremely easy and beneficial for future health providers.

Does anyone elses ssc still say Program: BSC? I've paid the deposit last week but it still didn't change yet...

You have to accept the BSCP offer under admission on the SSC and change your program under My Program on the course registration page.

I've accepted the BSCP offer on SSC last week, but the pharmacy program doesn't show under My program on the course registration page yet..still shows my old program

I have the same problem as vita25. I paid the registration deposit last week and still my program is BSC and I don't see the BSCP eligibility under MyProgram in SSC. I called Margaret but she doesn't know the status of my account either. Likely, the undergraduate admissions are still going through the whole thing and not up for everyone.

I think it should be up by the end of this week or the week after.

I think it is a matter of the admissions people getting around to adjusting your account. I didn't go to UBC last year and I haven't even paid my BSCP deposit yet or officially accepted the offer in the SSC (I am out of town), but it still shows for me as being in the BSCP program. So I think it is really a matter of them making adjustments for previous UBC students' profiles while new students like me were just automatically entered and took less time.

Just posting to say that I went to UBC last year (and years before that...), and BSCP does show for me after I 1) paid the deposit and 2) accepted the offer on SSC.

If you've done the above and still no luck, it's probably best to contact Science Advising as opposed to Margaret.

I can see my bscpharm eligibility the day after I accepted the offer and made the payment. This morning, I got an email about my updated reg time. If you still don't see ur bscpharm program I suggest you call enrollment services instead of Margaret. Their phone # is 6048229836:xf:

Probably better to wait until the end of the week, since we were told statuses would be updated some time this week. Probably takes them a while longer to change to your program if you were already expected to be in another program in September. If not, definitely call by next Monday 👍

Anyone have my problem where you don't even see the deposit fee on SSC? I see everything but this fee.

Or maybe it's because I already paid my fee when I registered for courses in my original program.

Quick question: What was the deposit fee you guys had to pay? I just want to compare them.

it was the same $100 deposit fee that you had to pay before you can register

Ah, what a pain in the butt it is to e-mail all the course coordinators and try to get exemptions since i already have a degree from a different university and have taken some form of most of the first year non-pharm courses. Margaret gave me instant exemption from organic and stats, but apparently I have to go through the coordinator to discuss anatomy, physiology, microbio, and biochem. Doesn't help that UBC and the U of C totally organize their courses completely differently!

Not complaining too much though, I am just happy to be accepted. And I quite enjoyed anatomy and physiology and it's been a while so I wouldn't mind *too* much if I had to take them again.

I'd be ecstatic over this!!

Hey lllix, I was just wondering, what micro courses (and others) have you taken? Because I've taken an intro micro course (biol228) and immunology (biol318) now, but the intro micro was used in lieu of their Biol 112 pre-requisite requirement and immunology was used as an approved pharmacy elective...So I'm hoping since I've learned that material to a greater depth that I won't have to take MICB 202 >_>

yea i got instant exemption from orgo and stats too but such a pain getting exemptions from micro, anat and physio.......sigh i took so many anatomy courses in second year AND third year too......

I dunno what school you went to, but at my school they have a more generalized microbio course with a lab component--CMMB 343. It covers everything form basic prokaryotic diversity, viruses, and immunology, but because the courses are organized differently between my school I am pretty certain I will get out of the BIOL 112/MICB 201 requirement, but because MICB 202 fully focuses on immunology it seems, I don't know if I will have covered it to the same depth as in MICB 202.

Yeah, so sorry that doesn't help much, I am just as lost as you on that matter. Those courses seem to be the most confusing in terms of figuring out transferability. Although anatomy is a bit of a pain too. Either way, I spent a significant portion of my evening last night rounding up course outlines and sending them to all of the relevant course coordinators, so hopefully everything will be in order by the time I get to my registration date. Like I said in my other message, I wouldn't mind retaking physiology and anatomy, but I would really like to keep the amount of repetition to a minimum. There has got to be *some* perk to finishing a degree beforehand!

Edit: woohoo, my exemption from PHYL 301 just went through!

Nice, congrats! I went to UBCO. The courses I've taken have covered all of the stuff described in MICB 202 and more from the sounds of it...so I'm kind of confused. Well, at least I got out of one elective. Margaret said I will still have to take MICB 202...Which doesn't make a lot of sense since I got credit for Immunology (MICB 302) which has a pre-requisite of MICB 202. Oh well guess it'll be a refresher..

I'm guessing you have an exemption for Biochem though if you have your degree? I'm thinking of taking a 36 credit year..but not sure if that's a good idea yet. Thoughts?

Wow, I can't believe they are making you take Micb 202 if you have credit for Micb 302!!! I took 302 (did a microbi/immunology degree) but thankfully they didn't make me take Micb 202 once I got into the pharm program!

PS congrats to everyone who got in 🙂

Grats to everyone who got in!!

Unfortunately, I didn't get an offer but I'll be trying again next year.
I'm entering second year this winter and I'm wondering if any of you have any insight as to how I should plan my courses.

Reading the ubc website, there are some courses that will be used in the admission average (chem, micb, anat) but are "pharmacy electives" (clst, ihhs) also used as part of the admission average?

Only required courses are calculated in your admission average, i.e.: PHYL301, STAT203, ANAT390/1, BIOC300, MICB202, CHEM233/5 (or equivalents of these). Retakes of any courses (or equivalents) are also added for calculating your average.

Though not all easy, you should try and take as many of these as you can for your current program... saves you a big buck when you do get it and have to start paying a whole lot of hurt more for each credit attempted.

Thanks for all the help. My GPA was 77.9 and PCAT comp. was 74. I'm not sure but I think the PCAT is what bombed it for me. I don't think I messed up the interview too much since I was quite confident leaving. Margaret said to start emailing her about my ranking mid-July, so I'll do that and see how I can improve.

I'm just not sure how I should be planning my schedule. Should I be taking courses to gain admission into a specialization and take the required pharmacy courses to boost my GPA?

Your GPA is fine, PCAT can be improved a bit but isn't much of a deciding factor in the final ranking. Definitely need to wait on the ranking, since Margaret will give you your interview score as well relative to the average.

If you're already in the Faculty of Science, most of the required courses in Pharmacy for 1st-year can be also used as Science/upper credits, so you can definitely plan around that (which is what I ended up doing). Definitely recommend you take STAT200 (can be used for Science credit, unlike STAT203 that Pharmacy lets you take) and both ANATs (only BIOL121 required, which you already have)... decent amount of material and will be a huge GPA booster.

I'm at the U of C so UBC's course titles mean zilch to me. Like I said I think I will get out of BIOL 112/MICB 201, but I suspect I will get stuck with MICB 202, which I guess I don't totally mind.

I think I will definitely get an exemption from biochem (just waiting for a reply to that request) because I have taken many senior level biochem courses during my biology degree. Hoping to get out of at least one of the anatomies... At my school the anatomy course was a kinesiology course and was a single semester with lab, whereas here it sounds like at UBC it is two separate semesters with no lab? I dunno. Totally confuses me.

Quick question! My registration date for UBC courses is this upcoming week based on the Biology program I was going to enter. However, I'm assuming I now have a new registration time altogether for Pharmacy. Does this mean I won't be able to register for non-pharm courses (ex. ANAT or PHYL) with my old registration date? I would have to register these courses at the same time I choose my Pharmacy STT at the new registration time, correct? 😕 (Would that put us at a disadvantage for getting into classes?)

Thanks!

Yes, all your courses you register for with your former Science program will be dropped by Enrollment Services when your program is updated. And yes, you will be required to register for all the courses you need during July 18-21.

However, you are not at a disadvantage when registering for required first-year courses, as restricted seats are provided for all Pharmacy students. In the event that the restricted seats are all gone, you may email the course instructors for a "force add".

It's great that you're trying again! 🙂

I recall when I moved from 1st year to 2nd year, UBC made us apply for our preferred majors (3 choices) online to prepare us. Do you have that too? If so, it would help to know which major you have as a back-up (assuming Pharmacy is your ultimate goal). It would be best to satisfy as many prerequisite courses as possible within your major, while building up your Pharmacy courses (like MICB202, ANAT, etc) at the same time.

Pharmacy electives aren't used in the admission average btw. Only prerequisites to Pharmacy and courses in the mandatory part of the Pharmacy curriculum are used in GPA calculation.

Ohh okay. Yeah, I took a human anatomy and physiology course with a lab. Probably completely different though. How did you find general biochemistry though in terms of work load/difficulty?

Question to those of you who have experience working in a pharmacy either as a volunteer or technician, etc. How did you go about looking for these positions? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
