Hey everybody! Is it possible to apply to WCVM and UCVM at the same time? I am considering moving from BC to Alberta for a year to apply to UCVM instead of WCVM but I am wondering if it is allowed to apply to both at the same time if I have the right documents for both. I can't find that information anywhere.

You can apply to as many schools as you want! There’s nothing that disqualifies you from applying to a school if you’re also applying to another.

Do you know where it says this? I would be applying to WCVM as dependant status and to UCVM as independent status. I am scared that you can't do this because at WCVM they say you are dependant if you have not established residence outside of BC for 12 months. For WCVM, all I have to do is submit my birth certificate and parents health card and for Alberta I would submit my own new Alberta health card so it its totally possible I'm just not sure if it is allowed.

I think that while there may not be specific rules about this, it does create an ethical issue situation as the system is designed to have you apply to one or the other based on your residency. I think that if you were doing undergrad in Alberta to get your prerequisites and went home to BC every summer, then that would be a gray zone where as long as you had the required documents you could probably apply to both. However, if you are moving to Alberta specifically to establish residency to apply to UCVM, I do feel that is a bit disingenuous as truly you are not a dependent at that point. You also do potentially risk being red listed as the schools do still have baby close ties and it is possible someone could question applying to both with two different residencies. Not saying it would happen, but I believe there is potential for it to reflect poorly on you and your applications.

I believe you could always apply to WCVM for a non-subsidized seat as an Alberta resident but I don't know exactly how that works since they introduced those seats so take that with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the reply. There are no non-subsidized seats at WCVM anymore. It sounds like a complicated situation and I have heard of other people doing it and it is fairly common to move provinces just to establish residency. Probably will be best to just ask the admissions teams unless anybody here has first hand experience with this.

It would be a fraudulent application to apply to two Canadian vet schools unless you're eligible for special seats like Indigenous or international. You can't apply to one school as dependent and independent to another. That would be lying on your application.

Not to sound defensive but I’m wondering why? I don’t know about Saskatchewan but I qualified for Ontario as well since I used to live there. As far as I’m aware you can still apply outside of their domestic (Ontario) cohort as well?

Try asking OVC if you can apply to them if you're now an Alberta resident.

I did apply last year, I but to be fair I never submitted my Casper and haven’t checked since. Uofc was always my first option and since I was accepted here, I didn’t care. Thanks for letting me know! I honestly had no idea it was that limited.

Taking a quick look at the WCVM application manual, if you moved to Alberta for 12 months to establish residency to apply to UCVM, you would no longer be a dependant student to apply for WCVM. And to become a qualified student to apply to UCVM, you would need to establish residency for 12 consecutive months in Alberta. With the interprovincial funding for vet schools, I would err on the side of caution that this is so each Canadian (without Indigenous status) can only apply to one vet school which is the school that you have provincial residency for (where you've lived for 12 consecutive months). From my understanding it is because it is very expensive to train vet students, and this cost is greatly subsidized by the provincial government with hopes that these students will graduate and join the province's workforce, in which we already have a veterinary shortage. I think if you have Indigenous status you can apply to a vet school without having provincial residency, but otherwise I would advise against applying to both schools. I suspect if you ask the UCVM DVM Admissions team you might get a similar answer, but can't hurt to ask.
 
I sent my MCAT score to UCVM in October but do I need to do anything else? I'm paranoid that UCVM didn't receive it and they haven't been answering the phone. I'm guessing I'm fine?

I am re-applying and I sent my score through the AAMC website, and I was fine last year 🙂

If you go in to view your MCAT score it also tells you what universities it was sent to. If you can see uofc you’re good!
 
Hey y’all! Do you know if the Canada Post strike could affect our official transcripts? UCVM hasn’t picked up my calls and I don’t know which postal carrier it’s been sent under. Anyone know if they have any safety measures in place for delayed transcripts? I’m assuming the backlog will take weeks, if not months.

edit/solution: my uni stated that “due to the current Canada Post strike, mailed deliveries will be held until the end of the strike”. Talked to Kristy, absolute saviour!! For anyone else in the same boat, if your university allows, send an additional e-transcript through their portal to Kristy Mahar ([email protected])

How do we know if UofC has retrieved our fall 2024 transcripts? I don't see it on the To Do List.

I don’t think you’ll be able to see it. If you are/were a uofc student they’ll automatically get it and if you send it in you kind of have to hope they got it. Not 100% sure if you sent them in. If you’re concerned it doesn’t hurt to contact admissions to check.

It feels like crickets on here lately! How is everyone holding up? I find myself wondering about it more than I should. Really, we may not hear anything until June anyway. At least we might be able to see how we did on the Casper next week. One day at a time 😮‍💨

I haven't heard anything yet 😬 Hopefully we'll know soon, but at least we'll for sure know in one more month 😅 Almost there!

It’s pretty all over the place. Usually it’s been a Casper score of 4 or 3. The university also gives you their own score that’s reverse (1-4, 1 being the best). You might get a 4 on the Casper score system but get a 2 on uofc’s.

I second this. I have heard many different scores that were all over the place and differences with UofC scoring vs Casper scoring
