Can anyone here comment on the caseload for the Wildlife Medical Center, and also the exotics ward, at UIUC? Also, is anyone here planning to apply for the dual MPH program if you attend Illinois?

I'm considering the MPH program. I'm not absolutely sure whether public health or specialization interests me more. Provided that I get in, I'll probably decide where I'm going at the end of first year when I've got some rotations under my belt. I'm hoping for a chance to work with some of the vets in internal medicine and pathology so that I can get a better idea of what interests me most.

You might be able to email someone about that or check out their blog!

I asked about the exotics caseload to my interviewers and the student told me that the exotics people are always kept busy with cases.

Wildlife will keep you busy!! The WEAMS rotation is great. You'll have a constant caseload with some varied patients!

Does the general public provide you with your cases, or do you receive referrals from other places?
For WEAMS, both! Routine clients/patients as well as referral cases. You also get to go to the nearby zoos, too.

Case loads for WMC completely depend on time of the year and how much care your current patient needs. My team currently has a barred owl that we've had in clinic for 6 weeks now. She was hit by a car and had head trauma that resolved along with her eye issues. However, she developed a fungal respiratory infection so she had to stay with us. She's finally starting to eat on her own again and we're hoping we can send her to the rehab place in the next couple weeks. Because of how long we've had her, there's several other teams that will get a new case before we do who either haven't had a case in a while or their last one was very brief. In the summer it's much busier because of orphans. The exotics ward is always busy like others have said. When I had WEAMS on rotations, I saw quite a few birds, an iguana, a prairie dog, some guinea pigs, and at least one rabbit. They also take care of the WMC patients and a couple zoos. I also plan on applying to the MPH program next year. If you get in and have questions about it, there will be an introductory PHA club meeting where Dr. Herrmann will give a talk about applying. It's pretty similar to how you applied for vet school. The cool thing is though that you can enroll in your MPH classes while in vet school and you only are charged the vet school tuition. If you were to take any of your MPH classes over the summer then you'd have to pay for those. After you get the DVM, you spend at least another year up in Chicago to finish the master's because some classes are not offered online.

This is great. UGA has a similar wildlife program that I was able to work with last summer for a month. I just wanted to make sure Illinois has a good caseload, but it sounds like they do. I think too many cases would be hard to juggle with classes, anyway.

I really want to do the MPH program. Do students still have time to do clinical work while in Chicago? I'm nervous that a year break after the DVM curriculum would make me forget how to do stuff...

I love running as well, SnoozyQ! Will definitely be looking for a workout buddy if I go to Illinois. It helps keep me motivated! 🙂
Yay! Same here, it's really difficult to be motivated to workout alone. Hopefully we are classmates then. 🙂

Just called. Letters haven't been mailed out yet. :C

Ditto.

Also, I don't know what this means, but I asked about the portal being updated and I was told that I'd probably get my letter before the portal was updated. Either they mailed them out with express mail or they're not planning on updating the portal for a few weeks. I live in South Florida so it's not going to get here for a while if it's snail mail. -.-

I just wanna knoooow. :C

I'm a bit OCD and have a future schedule all worked out that I can send to you if you want. I was going to apply this year, but I missed the deadline because I mixed up dates. In short, I figured out how to have only like 2-3 classes not including the capstone done by the time I graduate with the DVM. Their classes also work differently where it can be only once a week. Anyway, if you're interested just PM me.

Same here. Even though I've got strong feelings for my offer at Purdue, I still want to weigh the pros and cons if I have the option. And what's the point of having an online portal if you're not going to update it?! You can't seriously tell me it takes that long.

Ugh they totally lied to to me the other day! Are we going to know before April -_-

It doesn't. My impression talking to them is that they want most people to hear from the letters, not the portal. The point of the portal is to ensure everything is in order and can be used if your letter, say, gets lost in the mail.

ANXIETY FOR NOTHING!!!

Last year, I think my portal was updated a week or two after my letter was received.

any new updates on when letters are going out?

I'm going to hope letters will go out tomorrow, since during the interviews they said that by Friday the 20th they should be out

Update: I called and Karen said SOME letters have gone out! She explained that letters have to go through an internal university mail system before entering the US Postal system, so that adds an extra day or so to delivery time. But she said that ALL letters will be mailed by tomorrow!

This paper letter thing is so dumb. Stop wasting paper and resources on stupid **** like this. We are adults, no one NEEDS a hard copy to frame in daddy's study. They should just email us the PDF of the letter and then we can print it if it is really that important (but it's not). Ugh.

I get where you're coming from lol. the waiting sucks! However, I would love a paper letter to keep and put on the back of my diploma frame. This will arguably be one of the happiest days of our lives.

You don't think your letter of acceptance to 1/30 US veterinary schools is important? A letter only about 2900 individuals receive per year? Some of us (me in particular) would LOVE to have a paper copy. Besides, if they're going to print it on nice paper, then by all means I'll have them do it! I don't want to be spending any more money on things that I don't have to...considering we're trying to get into veterinary school.

Patience is a virtue. Everything after the interview is out of your control anyways so try not to get too worked up about it, even though I'd be lying if I said I haven't.

"Daddy's study" made me lol.

On that note, yeah I'm probably throwing mine away.

But here's the thing. It's on printer paper. Like everything else.

I'm not concerned about the waiting part. I'm concerned about the wasted resources that go into actually mailing letters. It's just unnecessary with the internet/e-mail being a perfect resource to use. And like I said, if we want a hard copy, we can print the letter ourselves with PENNIES.

Let's forget about the letters and return to panicking about whether we were accepted or not...:scared:
I'm really nervous about this, but I remember seeing your stats posted somewhere and it looked like you have some pretty unique experiences.

But I know the feeling. I have a really nasty habit of being a little too critical of myself if I'm not careful, so I've gone through plenty of times where I felt like what i had just wasn't good enough. Thank goodness that I'm not as self-conscious as I used to be, or I would have had a difficult time putting myself forward during the application process.

I think it is worse knowing that we are only being judged by the non-academic factors of our application, as well as our interviews! I am sure hoping that my weird and unique background working in the field with wildlife helps me out in this one!

I think you underestimate how many people want a physical copy of it. For example, if I had to choose whether I got a physical copy of my bachelor's degree or a PDF, I'd choose a physical copy. In that sense, I'm a little old fashioned. I agree, some don't care whether or not they get a physical copy, but you can't go around knocking those of us who do want the physical copy, and go on to say that this piece of paper isn't important lol.

Again, just be patient. Being frustrated about something out of your control is truly a waste of energy. It'll come when it'll come.

I really could care less about this whole argument, but I must say that a physical copy of a bachelor's degree is not really on the same level as an acceptance letter...

On that note who really cares whether it is digital or physical copy you are going to do what you want with it anyways. Nobody really cares if you want to frame your letter or throw it into the fire. At the end of the day all that really matters is did you get accepted or not.

As my roommate so eloquently put: "Acceptance letters don't get you hired. Degrees do. "

Ah, the end of the application season. The one blissful time of year where Pre-Vet looks like Pre-Allo.
And through it all my eye only started twitching at "I could care less"

Um....off topic, but is an Intro to Communications class required for UIUC? I'd love nothing more then to drop this class if I so happen to miraculously get in since I already have my BS and it's the only class I'm currently taking for some other schools.

Only reason why I'm asking is because I'm getting different answers from differing resources >.<

I'm pretty sure they only require it for those without a BS. Look at their requirements for Plan B. Those are the prerequisites for those who already have their BS. You'll want to double check before you just drop it of course, but I think it should be okay.

I always love when someone has yet to reach the limits of their caring and feels like they must share that fact with the group.
HAHAHA this is hilarious. I want to incorporate this sentence in my life.

I go there at least once a week and just whip out a bucket of popcorn and enjoy. They make these vet school grumps look like furry kittens.
Why is pre-allopathic associated with hostility though? ..Urban dictionary had to tell me lol.. I feel like I'm not getting something

Pre-Allo is mostly filled with guys so it usually just leads to "nerdraging" and penis jokes. It's basically a cesspool like most internet forums. Oh and if you have anything below perfect scores you're automatically told you can't make it as a doctor and to go do something else. Just go in and take a peek. It's really entertaining to read if you give them little voices.

I'm using my never having seen one on the prevet forums as proof. 😛
They're also the only ones that fart and poop.

Edit: I suck at editing.
