University of Iowa Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have my interview with Iowa on the 26th, probably flying in from Denver on the 25th. Anyone else going to the 26th interview? Also, what is the interview process like? I heard that they do a closed application interview, any know if thats better or worst than the regular interview? What should I expect?

I have a few friends who are interviewing that day. The day is broken down into three activities. 1. a tour 2. a interview 3. a small essay.

You get your schedule when you first arrive.

It was all very laid back and enjoyable. They do a nice job of making you feel comfortable.

I would say a closed interview is easier because you can tell them about yourself in your answers instead of them just reading it. It also means they are going to ask more behavior questions, like how do you respond to certain things? It's all pretty simple. Just review your personal statement, think about your highlights and such and have fun.

I will be there on the 26th as well, during the morning group. Closed interview is pretty easy going, not unlike most job interviews (a bit shorter though, only around 30 minutes). Essay is nothing to sweat about. Tour is a tour. There's probably about an hourish of downtime throughout the day to chat with staff and other applicants.

Has anyone heard anything yet? (a little early I know) This is the first week there is a chance to hear anything (from the 2/5 interview) from what the dean said and from previous years posts.....

I wonder why more people who got acceptance are not posting on this thread. I am curious to know how many people got accepted.

When I interviewed on Feb 5, the dean said that acceptances would come via snail mail. Has this changed?
Usually you get an e-mail that says to keep an eye out for your acceptance paperwork so that you can reply in a timely manner. Once the letter comes you have a certain amount of time to accept or decline.

The committee may not have reviewed that many apps this week. If only one person posted here about an acceptance, it may just be b/c only one SDNer got accepted. Iowa hasn't got as large of an SDN following as some other schools.

So, do they always review apps once a week or does it happen multiple times? Anyone know? And is it really random who they pick out of the pile to review?

I believe they interview 100 people per interview date (morning/afternoon) so they have 200 applications to look over. I have to think they probably sent out at least 20 acceptance emails so I am surprised that we have only 1 SDN member check in so far.

I remember Dean Kelly say that if your stats are 3.5 gpa, 75 PCAT, and good letters of recs, there wouldn't be a reason why you couldn't get into Iowa...unless you totally blew the interview.

I scored a last minute interview invite a few days ago..will be there tomorrow! Was kind of suprised about the last mintue deal...

I think that applies to most schools.

Dean Kelly said that they review 30-40 apps each week. I think it was Mondays last year. It is fairly random, except for those who just interviewed, it might take a week or two until yours gets added to the pile.

So has anyone heard anything this week? I felt like this forum should have had some more activity by now....

I got an acceptance email on March 1st. I am pretty sure I will not be attending this school but I have not yet replied to tell them that until I am absolutely sure.

I interviewed Feb 5th.

I'm getting a little anxious. I interviewed on Feb. 5 and I haven't heard anything back yet. I hope this doesn't mean rejection.

I wouldn't worry too much. Remember they said they interview about 300 people, and probably go through about 200 acceptances before they fill up the whole class. So your odds are pretty good if you've been interviewed. But also remember that they have to send them in groups, and wait for those people to accept or not before they can move on to the next group. So that could take a while.

Yeah, thats a good point.

My friend just interviewed and they said they let in about 30-40/ week and the first week they only accepted around 20. So it's been 2 weeks since they started looking at applicatios. Out of the first 100 people who interviewed on the 5th, they have only looking at maybe 60? not sure if these are correct numbers, but it's way to early to start being anxious. 😉

I interviewed on the 5th of February last year and didn't hear back about my acceptance until late April so seriously don't freak out. It isn't worth worrying about.

Has anyone heard anything today? What time do they usually send out acceptances?

I am still waiting on a reply. Interview Feb. 5th in the morning. I heard emails this year are coming before noon, but last year some of them came after 12pm. Good luck everyone waiting, and congrats to those who have already been accepted!!

Has anybody received anything yet? Why there is so much wait? Is any body aware of the status of process so far?

There is a lot of waiting, but tomorrow is Tuesday so there should be more acceptance e-mails and wait-lists going out!!🙂

Any news yet today? I heard they are behind in reviewing applications. I sure could be done with this waiting!

I got accepted by Iowa today. Unfortunately, I already committed to Buffalo and will be turning down my acceptance. 🙁

Congrats on getting an acceptance even if you did decline it! Another Tuesday without an email and hopefully another week without any snail mail! ;-)

Can you tell us when you interviewed?

I interviewed on the second date which was like feb 12 or something. I haven't decline yet but I will do so in a few weeks when I have thought about all my options. I like the program but looking at the cost, buffalo is like 100k dollars less in tuition.

100k less!!! HOLY MOLY!!! What is there to think about? That is crazy less money! I wish you the best at whatever you decide to do, but save your money!

Yep in new York, it is not difficult to apply for state residency. First year, they only charge undergrad tuition at 15k. Then year 2,3,4 it is 19k each year as a state resident. Total tuition should be less than 80k. In Iowa, I would be paying 20k per semester for out of state. Year four, I heard you have to pay for summer tuition as well so that adds up like 180k.

Yes, you do have to pay for summer tuition as well your last year. It gets pretty costly.

I didn't hear from Iowa until May 1st (last year) when they offered me a position on the waitlist..Someone told me that they wait till the end to send out rejections/waitlists. Not sure if its the same this year...still waiting to hear from them!!

Last year my friend received a waitlist at the end of March and got in a week later. They send out rejections and waitlists before May 1st. They send early rejections to those they know don't have a chance, but they also send early waitlists to those they want to attend their but don't have room at the moment. So keep checking the email and snail mail! Hope we all get an email!

Good to know!! Thanks!!

I talked to my advisor, who is part of the college of pharmacy board at Iowa, today and he said they are about 2/3 of the way through the applications by now

Nope, he didn't say anything about that. I interviewed on February 5th and he said that they do go by the day you interviewed, but not to worry if we haven't heard back yet because it's an ongoing process.

Just thought I should update the people who are waiting because I know how hard it is to wait from my experience with Maryland. But I just received my acceptance letter at 7:30 ET. I interviewed on the 26th Feb.

Congrats on your acceptance! Will you be attending Iowa or Maryland?

You got a letter or email? From Iowa? They are sending them on Monday nights now too? So confused.
