***University of Miami Class of 2011!!!***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
oh yah thats right....i heard that they have 2 separate schools now but you still had the same application to fill out? i guess i'd try to e-mail hinkley and ask how you can improve your chances...maybe a letter of intent if you are dead set on miami....in any case its early in the game and a lot can happen between now and june...

Thanks Jon, it's my first choice at this point 🙂. Happy Holidays.

What about the problems in the M1 curriculum as mentioned in premed group by an M1.

like what, medtrial? i'm a 3rd year at Miller so if you guys have any questions about the clinical years or anything regarding the first 2 just let me know.

Happy Holidays Everyone. I'm so glad I'm back in FL. NC was freezing...😛

medtrial, MS1 here...our curriculum is prob a little different from current MS2 and MS3...

basically MS2 and MS3's started out with MBL module that included Biochem, Genetics, Cell Bio, Histology and Embryology...so that first module was killer...this year they changed it up so we didn't have histo and embryo till later...they also decided to squeeze all of anatomy into 8 weeks...so our anatomy module was killer...

the thing a lot of my classmates are mad about is how unorganized the last 2 months were...we literally go from taking our HDP finals in the morning to eating lunch and then getting thrown into the labs...that first week we had 4 labs and it was by far the worst week of med school thus far...a lot of people who have never been exposed to anatomy fell behind instantly and some never really recovered...furthermore we weren't given ample instructions on how to prepare for the written exams...there was basically a lot of miscommunication and the instructor was a visiting professor so it was just a big mess...

but at UM, i hear that they are constantly changing the curriculum and modifying it so most likely next year they go back to 15 weeks of anatomy and the previous instructor (she's badass) will probably teach yall and everything will be fine...

like most MS1's i was pissed and frustrated during anatomy but other than that i have no complaints about the curriculum...many ms2's and ms3's have said that other than anatomy they enjoyed the curriculum and it wasn't too bad so im looking forward to that...

Will one of the current students please comment on what the summer stipend is for doing research. I am wondering if it is enough to cover your living expenses over the summer.

Also, does tuition go up your third and fourth years (i.e. do they charge you extra for the summer.)

Good lookin' out homey.😉

Anyways, it doesn't look like we get much of a summer if we go to Miami http://www.mededu.miami.edu/MedEd/divisionsFolder/student_affairs/e-docs/Acad_Cal_06-07.doc
I'm not sure if it would be possible to get anything done in such a short time, but I also found this link https://www6.miami.edu/UMH/Forms/UMH_Form_Display/1,3233,931,00.html so obviously people are doing some research here.

Miami does indeed have a short summer break. As many of you have alluded, you can't get much done during that time. Don't sell yourself short, though. I know plenty of people who got research done---and submitted publications---during that time period. During those six weeks, I managed to pack in lots of traveling to Louisiana, Texas, and New Jersey and still enjoyed my summer while applying medicine.

I second Jon's post - thats an accurate description of what happened this year, but they're luckily gonna fix that for the next class.

Break is so awesome 😎

Do people start before and after? Like do they do light research during the year or finish up at the beginning of second year? I can't imagine that in 6 weeks they get all this stuff done. I would expect they had some affiliation with that lab prior to that time...?

Some people do have an affiliation with a lab prior to starting the summer. I wouldn't look at break as 6 weeks of free time to get work done. Instead, view break as six weeks of free time to get additional work done. If you aren't interested in doing research during the school year, you might want to make better use of your summer and do some conferences or special clinical sessions. Some examples: two of my classmates went to St. Jude's in Memphis for several weeks. I went to Rutger's Institute of Alcohol and Drug Studies on fellowship and to the Air Force's School of Aerospace Medicine (sorry, no civilians allowed there).

Yeah it's been great...I think I might start looking at that Doctoring stuff this week...but maybe not

Hey guys,

Just wanted to share that Dr. Markowitz let me observe his UM@FAU PBL group today. The second years have the PBL groups MWF from 9am-11am. They look at, discuss, research, and figure out a hypothetical patient's treatment. There were 7 MSIIs in his group and they went over a man who had hypertension, ED, and kidney malfunction. Actually, I didn't understand half of what was said but it seemed informative and a "hands on" approach. Do you guys have any thoughts on PBL?

What did you think about PBL? I am thinking about doing the same thing. I am in the process of making a decision between USF and Miami-Boca.
Thanks

I think it's ok. It's good for understanding things that are conceptual as opposed to memorizing straight forward material. When I have to simply memorize stuff I usually have to do that by myself. The PBL groups (from what I saw) seem to integrate all kinds of problems that a patient has, how different drugs interact, etc. so it's like helping you to start to think like a doctor. I'm just fine with it as long as it's not the only form of learning new material.

PS I think you should pick [email protected]'s where the cool people go...😀 😀

onmywayRN,

Hey,

I'm thinking of doing the same thing 🙂. We should sit in on a PBL session together... PM me if you are interested.

Ah yes, except that you forgot to mention that I'm now spending my evening writing a report on imaging of the kidney (with emphasis on renal stenosis) to be presented to the group on Friday. You missed the first hour where students show off all of the outside work they had to do. As you also noticed, we can quickly get lost in PBL and the moderator may not be willing to pull us in.

Do you have lectures after/in addition to PBL? Yeah, I did notice the research assignments everyone got. 😛

I am the same way. As long as it is supplemented with lectures I think I like PBL. The problem is that it is a new way of thinking and it takes getting used to it. I just have a bad taste about PBL since I see the poor students from LECOM all over town in libraries (USF and MCC library) and they just seem lost. They just read and highlight like crazy. I don't want to just read books on end with no guidance. I guess some of them enjoy it. I wouldn't.
I would love to attend a PBL lecture but I need to plan at least a month or so ahead to take the day off from work. I work full time at the moment and take 3 classes, not to mention that I live 3 hrs away from Boca so I need to either leave really early or the day prior and spend the night in Boca.
Deuist I would love to hear more about PBL.

During rheumatology (December) we did PBL three mornings a week along with ~10 hours of lecture. I liked that system since many of the problems from PBL could be answered from lecture. This module, however, is PBL only. We do a lot of outside research on very broad topics as we try to answer questions about the patient. Boca's plan for next year is to adopt a similar setup to rheum for all of the modules.

PBL + lectures sounds good.

I had this same question, and asked an MS1 about this issue through PM. I was told to contact Joyce Biederman about this issue and here is the response I got.

Hi GeauxMD,
I am here to help you find summer research. However, I work with students who are willing to volunteer...in rare cases the research is funded, but most of the time it is on a voluntary basis.
If you would like my help, please provide me with the following:
1) Completed application www.miami.edu/pdcg Do not press the "submit" button at the end of the application. We are having technical difficulties and the application will not reach me...you can either copy and paste and send as an attachment, or fax to me.
2) Current resume
Once I have the 2 documents we can discuss options. If you are seeking a paid summer experience, I am sorry but I will not be able to help you.
Best,
Mrs. B

This really worries me. Every other school I interviewed at mentioned that there was lots of funding for summer research if you are interested. I have tried to contact other faculty members about this issue but have not gotten any replies. Will a current student please speak to this issue and let me know if the above email is truly the policy in Miami.

I second that. Like I said before I feel PBL is a good way of learning if there is some sort of direction and lecture to get the basics.
I just did one of those Vark learning styles test and it turns out I am more of kinesthetic and visual learner rather than aural and read and write. In fact read and write was my last on the list, so reading material for PBL would be bad for me. I also assume that the majority of the learning for me will come from 3rd and 4th years since I will be in clinicals working with patients. I look forward to being paired up with a preceptor in the first semester too.

Hey, forgive me, but I'm not sure that Joyce really know what she's talking about...

What I mean is that, she cannot promise you a salary, but I'm PRETTY SURE that most labs will either ask you to apply for a grant, because some of them are already getting funding from the NIH and can ask you to appy for a grant in advance before you start, and that will pay you OR they will have a special stipend for a summer student. I believe there are some grant related summer programs at UM. Maybe during the year, it will be unpaid...

Someone confirm...but I don't feel like I'm making this up...

I really hope you are right about this. GeauxMD, thanks for looking into this for us. I totally dropped the ball on this one and I still want to know the answer. If you do unfunded research in the summer, that is pretty much a deal breaker for me.

Hey GeauxMd, I just got your PM (sorry, I have been off SDN for a bit!). I figure I will answer this here (check your message box for a PM later).

Mrs. Biederman obviously cannot promise that you will be paid; however there are multiple grants that one can apply for and use as a form of payment for research.

My personal experience is that if your mentor approves you for a UM salary it is just a matter of paperwork; the key is finding a mentor who knows you well and likes you enough to jump through the hoops for you. I have been fortunate enough to get to know a few people at the medical school and do work with them on a paid basis.

I hope that helps; the money is there, it is just a matter of independent checking in with faculty, etc. For example, if you wanted to do biochemistry research or genetics research, talk to the professors when you have the module and let them know what you are looking for. If you are persistent and patient you will get your stipend (and don't forget GRANTS, GRANTs, GRANTS!, that's where Mrs. B can be very helpful)/

Hey, forgive me, but I'm not sure that Joyce really know what she's talking about...

Mrs. B does know what she's talking about---she's in charge of finding research opportunities for students during the school year and the summers. She was the person who pointed me to Rutger's Institute of Alcohol and Drug Studies (I won a fellowship to the IADS). She also comes up with lots of essay writing contests for students to get published and possibly make some money in doing so. In her email, she is stating that she cannot guarantee that students will get paid for doing research. And indeed, most med students who work part-time in a lab will not get paid. However, you still have opportunities to make money if you're willing to respond to her emails.

Well, I figured she knew what she talking about, but the way the OP made it sound, it was as though she was saying it WON'T be paid. Obviously, if she's just putting a disclaimer, then I get it. I was sure there were funding opportunities, and as it turns out, I was right...SO THERE.

 :meanie:

Just giving you a hard time for interrupting my TV time.

FUNNY THING JUST HAPPENED...

I went to the Premed picture thread, and low and behold is a picture of this girl and I'm like "OMG I KNOW HER!!". Turns out we waited together for TB and blood tests and the place we were going to volunteer. Small world, but I love it when stuff like that happens on SDN. Makes it so much more personal, and doesn't make me feel like AS MUCH of a dork for spending so much time on here 😉.

Oh yeah, about the TB test...the nurse (if she should even be called that) gave me part of the injection subcutaneously and part of it intramuscularly. The bruise is still here, and looks like the rainbow. Let's just say I'm glad that I never had TB, otherwise I'd have one sore arm right now 🙂

And indeed, most med students who work part-time in a lab will not get paid.

I wonder if the different experiences you two have are due to the fact that you are on different campuses. It seems like there would be many more research opportunities at the main campus.

I graduate this spring. How 'bout you?

Also, has anyone figured out where to live in Miami? I want to live near the metro-rail, or maybe right near Jackson. Housing seems $$$, but not nearly as bad as I thought. It looks like you can get a nice two bedroom for around $1500, or move to Jackson/Dominion for around $1000.

I graduate this May. 👍 Senioritis is making me unmotivated. 😛 Wow housing in MIA is very expensive. Good thing I get to live at home...for another four years...til I'm 27... 😀 😀 😀

I love Starbucks. It's my favorite store. I have Starbucks stock. I have a Starbucks espresso maker at home too. I also have a Starbucks baseball cap (One of the employees gave it to me). Last year I was costumer of the month. They took my picture and everything (which tells you how pathetic my life is)
