The dtw metro airport is way out of detroit and it is NICE! To all those ppl scared of the D, it's not bad at all...chill. There are so many affluent suburbs around Detroit. You don't need to believe your movies or wherever else you got your info because if you've been to the city, you know it's not that bad. (and no I did not grow up there)

there are shuttles that go to and from ann arbor (from the union if i remember correctly) the northwest terminal is one of the nicest airport structures out there.

ann arbor is beautiful. best college town in the world imho and i'm living in boston right now. you have to settle in and experience it to really appreciate the feel of the town tho (unlike NY where it's thrown in your face).

detroit sucks, but you're almost never going to be there unless it's volunteer, theatre, EC work.

and yes, there are many affluent suburbs. there's middle class troy, upper middleclass birmingham (nice!) and upperclass farmington hills/northville/west bloomfield. (love the cranbrook reference in 8 mile)

i'm not even from MI.

that's so 90's e-tarded... 😛

but the necto does have a few nights that might cater to your needs. other than that, ann arbor doesnt really have an electronica scene.

trance is the best, its far superior to the hip hop scene that has taken over todays youth. i think in euro its still going strong. i know in chicago or ny schools i would have no problem tracking down the trance, but im a little concerned about places like ann arbor and dartmouth where i may have to settle for more plain jane fun. necto...interesting, ill look into it. im guessing i wont be asking about this at my interview +pity+

just checked necto at www.necto.com, looks cool but the best music is "pride" night, sigh

I received an interview offer at U of M without submitting my secondary. I *think* this is legitimate, U of M has had email glitches in the past, and email glitches seem to be endemic in the online application processes at a number of institutions.

I don't have overly competitive numbers (3.6 BCMP, 31S) and I'm out of state. But I did earn my BSE and MS at U of M, and my father and uncle graduated from U of M medical, and my entire family went to U of M. So that probably helped.

I give myself a 1 in 6 chance of getting in (probably slightly worse than the # interviewed/# accepted ratio.) But I plan on exceling in my interview to make it easier on them. Haven't gotten nervous yet, but I will be the night before the interview, that's for sure.

geez, what a strong legacy. i dunno how much that means outside of the ivies or anywhere for that matter, but if it does then you might be > 1/6

had to jump in on this one.....

I'm a UofM alum....1992-1996. Ann Arbor is a great town..... better than boston hands down, and ive spent a good amount of time in both. As for the electronic sceen. Can't say what its like now, but back in the mid 90's it was mostly house parties in AA, and then clubs in detroit and windsor. The sceen was kinda of underground, but vibrant. Necto (was the nectarine back in the day) was kinda lame, but again that was a long time ago.

UofM is in my top 3, actually if I get in, and I get a army/navy/airforce scholarship it will be my #1. Havent put my seconday in yet (12h nightshifts at the hospital are killing my app. process), but will post interview dates when/if they come (im 3.4/34 so it might not happen). If I get one, I'll take anyone who interviews in my group out on the town once we're done. Again, AA is a great town people.

bob

i second that, having lived in AA....great place.

but bob, i still think boston is a trifle better! 🙂

Oh Shredder, and how I used to respect you!

I love Ann Arbor....having an awesome undergraduate experience here..

For those of you who have interviews here.....heres a some bars/clubs to check on campus:

The Brown Jug: Awesome place to chill on the outdoor patio - good food too
Dominic's : Same as above
Charlie's: more of a bar....upstairs turns into a club at night
Rick's: more of a club...however, still has a huge bar and a lounge area
Mitch's: never been there b/c its been under renovation for the past 2 years...it opens in November though!
Scorekeeper's: huge bar...
Necto's: just....basically a dance club...
Red Hawk: upscale bar - good burgers
Ashley's: every type of beer you could imagine...very low key
Touchdown's: a little small...but beer pong tournys on Mondays
Connor O'Neill's : rustic irish pub
Heidelburg: nice bar/restaurant....chill out downstairs
Arbor Brewing Company : Awesome food/beer

Thats all I can remember off the top of my head...those are mostly on campus, there are a ton more nice places on main street too though

An awesome night's plan would be:
Food at Arbor brewing company
A drink at Connor's
Spend most the night at Heidelburg or Scorekeepers or Ricks
End up at the Jug for a nightcap before grabbing a slice at backroom pizza and then passing out

I also opted for an interview the 16th....see you guys then

Does anyone know what percent get to complete the secondary(i.e. send in LORs) at UMich? Also once your LORs were in, how long did it take to receive an invite or other notification.

Thank you!! :luck:

holy crap, that place means business, i can imagine it mustve been wild. i didnt even think of asking it, didnt seem feasible considering AAs small population

edit: hey guys, on a serious note, can we find out who our interviewers are and do a bit of stalking? how are you guys prepping for this?

How do you check app status at U Mich? Do they pre-screen for secondaries?
MSAR says they don't... mistake perhaps?
I looked at their website FAQ etc etc... but nothing.

I'd recommend looking at interview feedback website on the main page to SDN. It probably will give some insight into how interviews have gone in the past.

Ditto. I didn't send anything at all, but they sent me an email telling me to sign up for an interview. Hopefully it's not a glitch. *knocks on wood*

I'm an out-of-stater with no family connections to University of Michigan.

Do you have good stats??????? For people with decently high stats, they do that.

Hey everyone,

I was thinking about this the other day.

I'm a current Wolverine and a life-long Ann Arborite. I printed out the directions the other day that UMMS gave for parking and how to get to Med Sci II. The parking structure they tell you to park in is clear on the other side of the medical center. If you want to get to Med Sci, you can go thru the hospitals, but you'll get hopelessly lost. If the weather is nice, I would recommend going out and around. Either way, get there super early, otherwise, you'll never be on time.

Trust me, I was a volunteer at the medical center in HS and my dad works there... it's a total maze.

I guess it's a good thing I'm flying in, and I'm only 21, so no renting a car 🙂

Does anyone know more specifics for the interview day? I saw Michigan's website so I know it starts early, but can anyone tell me more about when to expect to be done, whether they will help with transportation from DTW, etc.? I am hoping to book my flight but don't want to have to change it later due to lack of info. Maybe someone who went last year remembers? Thanks, you'd be helping a ton!

Was this question answered? I have the same one... just received the LOR & pic request this morning.

Has anyone here submitted their secondary and NOT been asked to send in letters of rec and a photo?

How long has it been taking to go from "complete" to either an interview request or on hold?

I went ahead and sent my LORs in last week and they've acknowledged receipt of them. They've processed receipt of my photo too, so I'm ready for review when they are! 👍 :luck:

they asked me for LORs and a photo on 7/22, right after i submitted my secondary. on 8/3, my status said "complete, and under review". on 8/9 i was invited for an interview.

Thanks for the info! Right now mine says:
"Application Status as of 08/16/2005
We have requested that you send letters of recommendation and additional materials to complete your file for further processing. Please review the checklists below to see what items we have received. If all the materials requested are recorded here, your file is complete and is being reviewed."

I have checkmarks for everything, but I'm guessing that once they're actually reviewing my app, my status will change to "complete, and under review" as it did with yours.

Looks like I have a week or so to wait...

& just a repeat of my previous quesiton. Has anyone heard of an applicant who submitted their secondary that was not asked to submit LORs & a photo? It would seem odd to wait on that request if there wasn't some sort of screening, but I haven't heard of anyone not being asked.

dude...im stressed out

what kinds of questions should be asked when the interviewers invite them

how much are you guys finding out about the school. are you talking to current students? do we need to know anything about match lists? ahhh...anything, anything!

i have seen interview feedback. but its not enough, dammet!

I was invited to submit the secondary yesterday (8/17) and did so. So far, I haven't been asked to submit LORs or a photo. I don't know how long it takes. How am I supposed to know if they want me to send a photo?
I reviewed the technical standards so now there's a check mark there. but right above that, it says, photo, please email to...Am i supposed to wait till they tell me to email it or what? I don't know what's going on lol, im kinda lost on this whole thing. Really wasn't expecting to hear from them at all. My application status says it's unavailable...

hey guys...

Does anyone know how long after interview michigan lets you know of their decision? Do they have a set time? Just trying to weigh the risks/benefits of filling out the other michigan secondaries.....

Michigan has rolling admissions starting October 15 (the earliest possible non-ED acceptance date). No school will ever give you a concrete acceptance before that date.

so it's not like a "two weeks after interview" type thing until after oct 15th?

I am trying to figure out whether what I got was an automatic interview, not that it really makes a difference at this point. I submitted the secondary on 8/17. This morning I got an email asking for photo/LORs. I check my status and I was invited for an interview. I didn't think about auto interview until I read some of the posts heres. I realized that not everyone who was asked for photo/LOR got an interview. Well was this automatic or what?

Oh yeah, my interview is Oct 7th. Anyone else on that day? Holla!

i'm on october 7 too! have a couple interviews before it, so hopefully i'll be warmed up by then...umich is def one of my top choices! 🙂

Yup, that was around the time my friend got her first acceptance letter last year.

Funny how that coincides with the time the August MCATers get their score reports.

bump
(and grind)

I am also going to be interviewing at U of M on Oct 7. I have a question that is semi-related. I just looked at my Email and received a message from U of M inviting me to their chat session with their dean, and some current med students. They said that this is by invite only. I am assuming they are inviting the same people who are invited to interview. Is anyone planning on attending this? Do you think it will increase my chances of getting accepted if I go? I really don't have a whole bunch of questions for them, but if going will increase my chances of acceptance, then I will definitely be there. Let me know what you guys are doing.

So doesn't getting an interview at UMich mean that you have a pretty good shot at getting accepted???

I mean, after all, if they interview about 700 people and have a class size of 170, they have to be accepting about 300 (about 43% of those interviewed).

Anybody else come up with the same conclusion???

So, I just checked my status and it showed that my file has had a preliminary review and that I'm currently on "hold." Is it safe to say taht this is just a different way of saying "rejection"?

amand0r said:

Amand0r: I would think that UMich would be on a rolling 2-3 week delay after Oct 15. If you interviewed on Oct 15, I'd expect a decision (accept/waitlist/reject) before November.

Jammin06, I would not immediately take this to mean rejection. Many applicants have talked about having been put on hold but then later asked for LORs and a photo for the interview. It's just that you didn't make the automatic interview cutoff, which is not something I'd worry about.

i got this invite too! if you feel like talking to people, do it; if you really don't want to, don't...leave the slot open for someone who does in case there's limited space. but it's not like a huge time commitment, so you may as well check it out, right? and no, i doubt it will have any impact on your admissions decision...

i reserved my spot already...i want to ask questions about the atmosphere cuz i read somewhere that it's pretty competitive.

I wouldn't be surprised if they changed their methods. This year's class was overbooked so they may initially accept fewer ppl this year.

My application at Michigan says this:

Application Status as of 08/05/2005
Status not available (S,1).

What the hell does this mean? They still haven't reviewed it? It's 8/25 😡

I think you would have gotten the automatic interview, but perhaps because you are an MSTP applicant, they may still be reviewing it. I'm sure for MSTP things work a little differently then had you been going the straight MD route.

SeventhSon,
I had that same message with the date 07/25/2005 so I called their office on August 18th to ask them about it. They gave me a little bit of a run around saying the files would be updated soon. Well after the weekend my status page changed to a request for LOR on the 22nd (which I had already sent in), and then on 8/23/05 it said:Your file is under review. Reviews may take up to several months and could include some "on hold" time while we compare files of groups of applicants. You can view the checkboxes on this screen to see which of your materials we have received (allow 3 weeks for delivery and recording of materials you have sent). So I wouldn't worry to much they might just be a little behind. Hope it helps!

I guess that means I'm on hold. 🙁 I was really hoping for a status change, but that isn't the one I was looking for!

Good luck to everyone else! :luck:

So what's up with the "interview ticker" on the admissions home page?

... and how have they offered only 90 interviews but scheduled 195? Oh well, I sure hope I get one of the 515 remaining interview slots.

It won't be fun to watch that number go down as I remain on hold. 🙁
