I was under the impression that the 'undergoing review....which may include hold time' status does not necessarily mean that one's application was on hold. Has the U. of M. admissions office told you as much?

Hey abhin,

I didn't call to inquire, I just know that many others (especially here on SDN) have completed their apps and received interview invites. Since they have apparantly looked at my file now (reviewed essays, requested LORs & photo) and given me the "don't be surprised if you're waiting a long while" update, I just read between the lines.

If I'm wrong please let me know! I haven't heard of anyone yet who has received this status update and received an invite.

Your reading may well be on-target. However, it's early days yet and you may still get an interview invitation.

I know, I know...

I was just hoping that if/when I did receive an invite, it would be sooner rather than later. I'm going to have to work hard not to drive myself crazy watching the number of available interview slots drop, and drop, and drop! 😱

😛

I'm surprised you didn't get an autoinvite. Good luck! Hopefuflly you'll be there soon.

I wasn't, but thanks for the vote of confidence! 🙂

Unfortunately, I think my 3.28 overall GPA is going to give me problems at most/all of the "top" schools. 🙁 (I don't have enough post-bac "A"s to make up for 3 poor undergrad years, and I'm afraid that they won't look past the overall to see the 3.78 science GPA & high MCAT. 😳 )

I have the same status. "Application Status as of 08/23/2005
Your file is under review. Reviews may take up to several months and could include some "on hold" time while we compare files of groups of applicants. ..."

I guess that means I'm on hold. 🙁 I was really hoping for a status change, but that isn't the one I was looking for!

Good luck to everyone else! :luck:

i happily disagree...we are not on hold! everyone who does not go throught he automatic interview process has this message come up after the LOR/photo message. I remember ahd929 had the same thing...his message then changed to "interview" a little more than a week later. My thing says the same thing (8/23), so lets wait and see what happens in the next few days. I am sure there is a distinctive "on hold" message, as many people on this thread have said they got it.

Sounds good to me! 👍

I'll just keep waiting and wishing! :luck:

I still haven't gotten asked for LORs or a pic...so I hope they will soon. I wonder when they'll actually look at my app!

the "under review" message turns into a "on hold msg" or "interview msg"
That's pretty much what happens from what I have seen. It seems the people that have gotten an "interview" msg after the "under review" have either been very very close to their automatic cutoffs or had an incredibly high mcat (>38).

does being asked for these mean anything? i'm about to submit tomorrow and i got the email yesterday asking me for all my materials. i just assumed it was for completion's sake. not expecting an interview from them actually 🙁

and who's excited for this season! GO BLUE!!!!! avant, breaston and hart baby.

I think it does because I haven't been asked for it! So obviously they're looking into the app before asking me for the LORs. (although i've already paid the fee for the secondary so i hpoe they do ask me for LORs soon!)

Thanks for the update! I still may end up on hold, but I'm definitey hoping that my MCAT (and in-state status) will push me into an interview slot. We'll see how it goes... :luck:

Not everyone is asked to submit these, so it is some sort of positive sign (if only a small one?) that you have been asked.

Oh just to update what I said earlier. I think a couple ppl on here with good connections to the school also got interviews.

I am. I will miss much of the beginning of the season. (That's ok, I'll be doing a lot of sailing.) I'm be going to Penn St. and Ohio St. but I'm not sure about Minnseota & Indiana.

The offense will be solid. The defense will determine how well the season goes.

Go Blue!

So what's up with the "interview ticker" on the admissions home page?

... and how have they offered only 90 interviews but scheduled 195? Oh well, I sure hope I get one of the 515 remaining interview slots.

It won't be fun to watch that number go down as I remain on hold. 🙁

they update it every 6-7 days

that just means that they have offered 285 interviews, out of which 195 have called the office and set a date, and 90 have not yet decided a date.

Yeah, I looked at that again this morning when my reasoning skills were a little sharper and it made a lot more sense! 😉

So only 285 interviews offered. Not bad considering they say 1/3 go to auto invites and that is only about 35% of total interviews offered.

For those of you "on hold," did you submit letters and your photo?

I've asked this before to no avail but now that interviews are beginning soon, does Michigan send us any information about the interview? I know their website has a "What to expect" but do they send info on getting from the airport, student hosts, where to show up... etc? I called them a while back to find out about the interview-day hours so that I could book a flight, but I've heard zilch from them otherwise. Anyone else heard/know anything?

I got an e-mail today w/ links to the stuff in the secondary and one to the umich.edu main website about visiting Ann Arbor.

Who else is totally sold on Michigan now after the chat room? Everyone was so friendly, and I really learned a lot about the school! GO BLUE!!!!

there's a link from the status page with all the details--the day starts wicked early, like 7:30 and it ends by 3. they give us breakfast and lunch.... what day is everyone going??

yeah, the chat was neat--but did i read correctly when he said that there would be 40 to 50 interviewees each interview day?!?! that seems like an awful lot, although i really don't have any experience to base this on, lol.

i was PC '04! been living in bethesda, working at NIH for a year! how about you?

Yeah, the chat was great. Really fun people, the students seemed happy, the admission dean/directors were great. I need to get their secondary submitted - I interview in two weeks!

This question might have been answered already, but it seems like some people who have been placed "On Hold" are sending in their photos even though they have not been invited to do so.

Is this a smart thing to do? Does it show interest?

UMich is one of my top choices, so any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

Did anyone attend the U of M chat? I couldn't because of work responsibilities. I'm wondering how informative it was or whether there is an archive of it.

I didn't hear about the chat at all (until now.) When was it?

SailCrazy said:

as far as i know, it was just for people who have been invited for interviews...or maybe only those who have scheduled theirs.

Makes sense, I was invited to the chat and signed up for it, but I couldn't attend it due to work responsibilities. As a result I am searching for an archive for it.

I'll call the medical school and ask them.

Oh, okay. I'll crawl back into my hole now...

hey for those who were asked to send in your LORs, anyone not granted an interview yet? i sent them in earlier this week and this waiting game is gettin my all anxious.

bump to previous post, and..

for those who submitted their LORs/photo, has any one who received the "under review" message, 8/23 or afterwards, been granted an interview?

i sent mine in 8/10, my message was under review as of 8/23, and have haerd nothing. its going to take a while.

i should have asked this in the chat, but it didnt occur to me:

michigan interviews 600-800 candidates, and 170 matriculate there. the stat that i havent been able to find is how many acceptances they offer? and this applies to any school. from a purely statistical standpoint, what are ones chances of acceptance after being invited for an interview? this question may be addressed in some old thread, please direct me there if so. i dont know why i have never thought of this until now. surely they dont make exactly 170 offers and then extend more after may 15 (i think thats the day)?

I don't know where else they might be available, but they are available for most US medical schools in the US News and World Report "Ultimate Guide to Medical Schools." It's cover price is $18.95 in case anyone's curious. If there are just a few schools you're interested in, I don't mind posting the stats . . . just ask.

could you post them for hopkins, stanford, and uchicago? thanks so much!

Or you can buy the online edition for $15. Oh, what the hey, I think I'm going to do that right now anyways. I told myself I didn't need it, but I've already spent $1,500, what's another $15?

Anyways, USNews Medical School Rankings for those who want it.

I had all of my stuff in on 8/16 and haven't heard anything. I've had the same "under review" status since 8/23.

I'm optimistic that it won't take too long, but I'm certainly not holding my breath!

Thanks! How about Northwestern, Mayo, Wayne St., and MSU CHM?

Ok so why is my status still "unavailable" !! It's driving me nuts! I turned in mys econdary about 2 weeks ago and it says, status unavailable since 7/5. what the heck does that mean? does anyone know, is anyone else's status unavailable?
i haven't been asked for LORs or the pic yet..:S

i think some of the accepted/matriculated stats on the USNews site include acceptances off the waitlist in the total # of acceptances for some schools (Hopkins --> less than half the people actually matriculate?!?)
