First of all congratulations are in order for the class of 2008. I did a search and found that no one has of yet started an acceptance thread for OUHSC. So here it is:

Let's hear from you!

Hey OUDoc08,

It's nice to finally meet a future classmate. I can't wait until the fall arrives. Getting through this last semester is like pulling teeth. Where did you go to undergrad and where are you from? My friend, wordup (who will also be at OU), and I are graduating from Southeastern Oklahoma State this spring in Durant. OKC will be a bit of a change, but I can't wait for it. I lived and did research at the Dean McGee Eye Institute at OUHSC last summer. Soon I will return. The white coat's gonna rock. A little about myself.......I'm 22 years old and married. I play lots of video games and listen to punk rock. That's about it.

Do you have any idea what specialty you want to pursue at med school? I have no idea, but I'm interested in seeing what everyone else wants to do. Anyhoo, holler back. It's good to be a Sooner.

Hello,
I live 10in Muskogee, work as a paramedic for Muskogee Co. EMS, and graduated last fall from Northeastern State Univ. in Tahlequah. I am 28, married and have two boys age 2 & 4. Will be moving to OKC area in the next couple of months. Not sure what I want to do as far as specialty, but I'm thinking along the lines of some kind of surgery or possibly radiology. Anyway, good to hear from fellow classmates. Keep it up.
Tony

Since you're married, we'll probably be in the same mod together. I hear that they like to keep the tied up married folks together. I think that we should name our mods before we get there. I think that our mod should be called the Screamin' Meanies. Do you like that name?

Also, what made you decide to go to OU? I went because it's the shiznit. I like the campus and there is an awful lot of research that goes on up there. Most of my family lives around OKC. Also, I think that there are a lot of opportunities lying in wait for me at OU. My wife will likely have a few more jobs to choose from in OKC. You are from Muskogee, which is pretty close to Tulsa, why did you decide on OU above OSU? They were the only two schools that I applied to. I was really split on my descision, but it can down to the above mentioned reasons that I decided on OU.

That's cool that they would shack up the old married folks.
I picked OU over OSU mainly for facilities and program perks. I really liked both schools, but I saw alot more potential at OU. I like having several hospitals to rotate at in close proximity, better research opps, as well as little things like the mods, campus, the possibility of a major cancer center, etc.
So in the next couple of months, my wife is trying to find a job up there, we've got to sell our house and buy another one up there, and try to find daycare/preschool for the kids. Lots to do, but everything will work out I'm sure.

Anyway, lets keep this thread alive. There's got to be more people on here than just us.

actually, you're probably all that there is. most Sooners can't read, which precludes them from internet activities 😀

just kidding, congrats on your acceptances

Always a lurking comedian around 🙂
BTW, do you know Steve Finley? MSIII I believe. I worked w/ him at EMSA in OKC in 99 during the tornado. Tell him Tony said hi if you see him.

Also if anyone knows of any full-time pharmacist positions in OKC, please PM me. Wife is looking. Thanks.

actually, he was in our class until histo sniped him down. great guy. were you on the Paramedic episode, too?

Strangely enough, my partner and I were dispatched to Bridge Creek where Steve ended up getting sent, but got diverted to Moore. (Thank God)

Bridge Creek wasn't even in our coverage area, so nobody knew where it was at.

My partner and I had their camera crew with us a couple of days before, and we ended up asking our supervisor to have them put on another truck because they were always in the way. Tripping over oxygen hoses, wouldn't keep the camera out of people's faces even when asked, and just generally trying to turn our shift into a drama. Not being a very dramatic person, I was fairly turned off by this. I can't imagine having to babysit them during the tornado.

My partner and I had enough to deal with, and I'm just thankful it turned out semi-okay. Thumbs-up to Steve for handling it all the way he did. He's a great medic, a great guy, and I think he will make a truly awesome doctor.

Sooners Suck!

Long Live the Longhorns. Bevo Rules!

All kidding aside, congratulations on getting in. That state still sucks though. Seriously.

If my memory serves correctly, I think that OU has put the hurtin on the Horns the last couple of seasons. Don't knock my beloved Oklahoma. I didn't even apply to any Texas schools because I don't want to live there. However, my wife is a Texan, so I don't guess that I can hate the state entirely.

I know Steve, too, but don't see him much since he's out on rotations & I'm still stuck in the classroom for a few more months.

We got to watch parts of the TLC show on the OKC tornado with him. 🙂 It was fun to watch him on the show & then get commentary from him, too.

Hey don't be heed to the damn Bevo Worshipper. Just remember 65-13 and that we have 4 straight on those punks in Austin. F#C$ Texas.

Congrats on the acceptances to OU, I'll be applying to OUHSC next year.

I may be going to school in Atl, but I'll always be an Oklahoman.

Did Steve ever cut his hair?

Hey DrMom,
Do you know Eric Hogan? He is an MSII, I think. I went to undergrad with him.

Do the medical students at OU ever have contact w/ OSU students in 3rd/4th yr, since some OU students do their rotations in Tulsa, or are they usually in separate facilities? I was wondering because I could've sworn I saw an OSU student doing ER rotations at St. Francis the other night when I took a patient up there from Muskogee. (Wondering because I know several students in their 1st yr at OSU right now. (David Hopkins, Scott Glover, and Ana ____) Went to NSU w/ them for undergrad.

yeah, we have contact with them if by "contact" you mean running circles around them. 😎 😛 St. Francis ED is a popular elective rotation, especially for those interested in EM. There are a few hoops involved if we want to rotate at St. John, but for the most part OSU students in Tulsa are like Bank of America or Quick Trip-- we're everywhere. . .

peds didactics is a joint thing, otherwise i think most meetings between students are just luck-- there's no organized "bedlam" joint rotation thing or anything going on. which kinda sucks, 'cause most OU students are pretty cool folks 🙂

We're everywhere. 🙂 I'll be doing a radiology rotation with OU students at St Francis and I'll likely do a month in the ED, too.

I know those MS1s, too. 🙂

Go Sooners!

But the med school didn't want me, so I'm defecting to Longhorn country. 😛

Oh well, we'll still love ya anyway. Nice to know there will be at least one intelligent person down there. Now if only they could play football...

Congrats to all those accepted!!

I live in SW OKC myself 🙂

My husband works for the OU Health Science Center and has for about 10 years now so we know just about everyone down there.

I am still a pre-med but wanted to send my congrats your way!

Hope you all post often because I would love to hear about your experiences.

What happened Soonerpillow? I thought that you were probably the most qualified person that I interviewed with. Do you think that they didn't want you because they knew that you'd go elsewhere? It sucks that you won't be there for the fun, but Texas needs a good Oklahoman to keep the wheels from falling off. Anyhoo, good luck and keep me posted on where you end up.

I have no idea what happened! It's okay, though. My wife probably couldn't get a job in OKC anyways. It really worked out for the best. It's just kind of weird. 😕

How funny is it that there's more people posting in this thread that go to OSU's med school than OU?

thats scary, ive seen your stats, and im no where near to where you are =o. Congrats to everyone who got accepted and gl to ya soonerpillow, ill be applying to OU next year =).

In the year 1996 when the rogue planet comes hurtling towards the earth and passes between the moon and the earth and causes the moon to be split asunder we shall be counted amongst the righteous those who have been chosen to ride in the huge rocket sled that shall be sent forth from our planet. And on the new ReEarth we shall forge mighty statues in the image of L-Train, Ronnie James Dio and Whiplash the dog riding monkey and it will be good. Meanwhile those left behind on old Earth shall be forced to eke out a living with the only remaining life, the vampires and the sasquatches and they shall be forever locked in eternal dance off (and oh how they will dance) to determine superiority. This has got to be the most bizzare post ever. D, you crack me up.

😕 😕 😕

The last reply is a hard one to follow, because it makes me sound so boring. I am going to be a sooner next year, too! I am living in Tulsa right now. I took a year off after undergrad, so I am nervous about getting my butt in gear to study again. I grew up a jayhawk fan, so it will be hard to start cheering for those sooners. I was going to start cheering for them this basketball season, but it looks like I will need to wait till the fall.

Why you gotta be nasty to OU? Nobody here has been picking on OSU. Maybe students at OU have better things to do than waste time on message boards.

So am I. Everything that I say should not be taken literally. I'm glad to have you OSU folks up in this shizzle. Lord knows, it would be a lonely SDN w/o the orange Cowboys hangin around.

Too bad over 35% of the players on the OU team come from high schools in Texas..

Hey OUDoc08,
Do you know when we get our white coats and when orientation begins at the school? The admissions office has been a little slow in sending out the information.

I heard that the cats at your house are planning a mutiny. They shall unite under the umbrella of feline hatred and rage to crush you, wordup. Be afraid. Every step you take is being watched. Your every move is being analyzed to find the exact moment when you will be the most vulnerable to house cat attack. It is your brain that shall be scrambled scanner-style. I have sold you out for little more than a dead bird and three bits of meow mix. They are coming for you. Yes, vengence shall be mine.+pissed+

Not sure, but I believe school starts 3rd week in Aug. So, I'm assuming, prob. the week before. I've got a family reunion the 1st weekend, so I'm hoping its not then.

They are a little slow in letting us know, so if you hear anything, please post.

Anybody heard anything back from scholarship committee yet?

I filled out the form a couple of weeks ago. I think that I recalled reading that we have until the end of march to fill out the form and the scholarships should be awarded by the end of May. However, I'm not sure when we will hear back from the school about it. They said at my interview day that something like 70% of last years class got a $4000.00 (I think) scholarship based on economic need. Anyhoo, we should know before too long what's going on.

First I want to say congrats to all of you accepted at OU Medical School... I hope to be joining you within the next year or two, I'm currently at OU and will be a junior in another month.

I was wondering, when you each applied, did you already have your bach. degree or were you still in school?

I am planning on applying while I'm a senior and then completing my bach. degree before the med school classes begin in August.

Is this how any of you did it?

Thanks in advance,
Johnny 🙂

GEAUX TIGERS!!!!

(Really sorry, I just could not help myself. You did get your revenge last week.)

good luck guys

thats generally how most people do it Johnny, i'm also going to be a junior next month and applying to OU before my senior year begins.

Yeah, I'm a senior right now. I took the MCAT during the spring semester of my Junior year. I applied last fall (the first semester of my senior year) and I graduate this semester. I can't wait. There's nothing wrong with taking a year or two off, but if you're sure that you want to go to med school, don't delay it. It's better to get through with it in my opinion. It's a couple more years that you'll have to work at a job and a couple of years deducted from your medical career if you decide to wait. How are you doing on your ECs and LORs? Have you taken the MCAT yet? Holler back if you need any advice because I just got through the gauntlet myself.

I'm taking the MCAT in spring `05... I should have the remainder of my prereqs completed by then and I've also purchased the Kaplan MCAT prep course books to study over the next 12 months as well as the EK audio osmosis set, and a few other MCAT preps. I plan to then apply to OU Med through AMCAS in June `05. As for ECs, I've done a little volunteer work recently in the ER at NRH and plan to do as much as possible between now and the time I apply at OU Med. I'm hoping to go in with an approx. GPA of 3.6, MCAT around 31+, with 100+ undergrad hrs at the actual time of the interview (if I am given one).

I haven't got a lock on any LORs yet, but it's in the back of my mind.

Johnny
