Does anybody know what #11 on Form B was? Amazingly, I successfully guessed on most of O'Don's stuff. Blair's stuff was actually fair, I thought. He seems to have a much more big picture emphasis, which works for me. Now I guess I need to look at Histo. 😱

The Neuro was my best C performance to date. I definitely need to take that class a little more seriously. I thought most the questions on the mini were fair, as in, if I studied enough to know the material I would have been pleased.

The good/bad news depending on how you did: both were worth an infinitely small portion of our grade...

Yeah I just hope that the demyelination doesn't spread to the larger portions.

I was also vaguely pleased with my guessing ability (which was oft-wielded), however all I can tell you about 11 on form B is that I missed it.

Ditto.

I was a guessing wiz today...got an 81%.
However I regraded my physio last night and noticed I'd missed another one...so instead of a 68 I got a 65.😡

I don't know anything about histo...
Totally unready for that IMPS and PBL...hope I have some brainiac in my group... (looks at Freeze) 👍

The pressure in a penis during an erection is 1200-1500 mmHg !!! Great pickup line at the bar. "Hey baby. I saw you from across the room and went straight up to 900mmHg...wanna see if we can top this badboy off til my sympathetics kick in? 😉 " (followed by either a puzzled look or a slap if she's in med school)

Yep, I also regraded my physio and missed one more than I thought, which sucks.

I'm too brain dead to study today so histo will have to wait. Apparently the professor has noticed our cr@ppy attendance. I'm sorry, but I can't do six hours of lecture and then get any studying done afterwards. Adding a systems based curriculum and cutting down on lecture hours would be two major improvements, imo. Dean Hall seems to be pretty supportive of changes in the curriculum (at least that's what I gathered from the speech she gave us last year) -- is she the only one?

Yea Hall is pretty cool. I like her.👍
And I noticed the comment from the histo prof about attendance.
I think some of the profs feel less important if we don't go...but they need to remember that even if we don't show in person we're still listening to them online usually.

Many forces in play with the curriculum indeed. I have heard the dean mentioned specifically tout Baylor which bears almost no resemblance to OU yet the gap between them seems unlikely to be headed toward approximation.

Sorry to say that I couldn't pick our histo prof out of a police line-up if I had too. (Well, obviously not that sorry. Is poor attendance a new thing this year?)

At least neuro exam 1 has an extra day of study time associated with it.

I hope that HB thing today isn't required.

edit; crap...there's a sign in sheet. Oh well.

It's for an extra credit point on the exam but not required. As an aside, somebody told me that one time Dr. Tucker showed up to a party in dominatrix attire.

I can buy that. I hear she's really sedate in real life, though, and even drives a Lincoln Town Car. 😱

Yeah, HB, they entice us with those measly extra credit points for all their pointless exercises. I like the material in HB, but I hate the module exercises. I'm still going, though.

So for the physio PBL tomorrow, does everyone have to show up at 10 or are the mods divided like they were last semester? I don't want to show up at 10 when I really don't have to be there until 11.

All I know about the histo guy is that he supposedly looks like a younger George Hamilton. 🙂

You're supposed to do yours from 11-11:50.

Ever see george hamilton is Zorro The Gay Blade? It was pretty funny. 🙂

I've been trying to comment for a few days, but I keep getting too busy at school or work or home... so!

First off- ya'll are starting to FREAK ME OUT in regards to my upcoming future as a med student. Really - you are making it sound awful. I'm starting to get a wee bit terrified. And that nervous pit in my stomach is starting to grow. Thanks for that 😉 .

In other news, I've got my first anatomy practical in about 1.5 hours. I am expecting to kick it's butt all over the place. I am so very much hoping that I can ace this anatomy class & then ace anatomy next fall! I actually really like the idea of TA'ing anatomy, so hopefully things work out so I can be cool like.... ? Who was it on here that did that? Antigunner? Yeah... I want to be cool like him. Those Netter's flashcards are quite handy, Rachel. Haven't looked much yet at Chungs though.

I also ditched my lectures this AM with the thought "I've already gotten in to med school, I don't need to be a gunner this semester." 😎 Hopefully I don't fail because I'm trying to take it easy. I got to do gram stains today in micro lab, which so far has been the neatest thing we've done. I dug it.

Okay, just wanted to say hello to all. Toodles.

You're supposed to do yours from 11-11:50.

So stupid question, but how do you know for sure? I'm getting a bit paranoid about showing up late and losing that 1% off my grade.

Jwax, we like to complain here. I feel like it's sort of the point of this place sometimes. Don't worry about it now! The vast, vast majority of students get through medical school just fine. Yes, they might not ace everything, but that's okay. 🙂 From my personal observation, it seems like the people who've had to repeat a year or who have left already either had big life problems that interferred with their ability to study or it's been foreseeable that they would have problems (ie they've never studied before in their life or they're just not interested in being here).

As for school right now, all you've got to do is pass. 😀

Don't sweat it sweetness. It's about time management and effective studying. I haven't really seen very much that I would consider to be beyond rote memorization of step I material. Whether or not I actually put the time in is my own issue, but I'm more concerned about the absence of commentary here, namely a long list of 2009er's who used to visit SDN regularly yet don't seem to have the time to now.

Definitely out in the cold (no weather pun intended) on this PBL. Are we going to get a reading list for IMPS?

There's a "masterlist07.doc" posted on hippo or it was emailed...I can't remember but it was pretty recent I think.

I thought that was just for the thing today. Stupid pbl!

I'm also a little irritated by the exam review for the class. I missed two of those reviewed questions, and I thought they should have accepted the alternate answers. For example, the one about the cell swelling versus lysing -- did we really learn enough to make that distinction? Of course, I am a little biased. 🙂

As for the IMPS, the reading assignment is on the IMPS page on hippocrates. It's just parts of the syllabus that we already covered on the mini, so hopefully I won't wind up with a D average this time. That'd just be my luck -- I have no problems passing all my classes but fail IMPS. 😱

I thought that was just for the thing today. Stupid pbl!

Ummm...you may be right.😕

I got a stupid D on that last IMPS too...it was sick cuz after I took it I was like "That wasn't so bad" ... then I graded mine. 😱

yeah, me too. 🙂 They actually expected us to know things in detail.

So I just sent an email to Dr. Blair complaining about one of the exam review responses. Is that kosher or should I drink more kool-aid? 🙂

That last appeal got me one more correct....woohooo back up to 68%

That was once I didn't miss. 😡 In the previous years, it looks like they always got points back, darnit. Hey, congrats the raise, though. The unofficial guide says the mini is actually harder than the first test.

So does anybody have an idea how bad the roads are? I can't see how they could be that bad, but it seems like they're talking about people having lots of wrecks.

Oh yeah, PBL -- the information about it is in the center column of the general MS1 page on hippocrates. The south side of the modules has to be there at 10 tomorrow, which means us, I think. 🙁

So does anybody have an idea how bad the roads are? I can't see how they could be that bad, but it seems like they're talking about people having lots of wrecks.

They aren't really that bad as of now. I think that the massive number of wrecks happened at about 1300 when more than a few motorists didn't recognize the darkened areas as slick spots.

The unofficial guide hasn't really coincided with my views. I think that there were only a couple of people contributing to each course evaluation, and I don't really know why they'd say that a specific exam was worse or better than another given the wide variety of opinions. Some classmates have actually referred to it as a reason not to study this or that. 😱 If I need it for boards, I wanna study it when we cover it!

Yeah, I went and walked on my driveway and in the road in front of my house, and I don't see how it could be anything compared to what we had earlier. It sounds like people were just driving too fast.

Isn't Oklahoma in the south? What's up with this cr@ppy weather. 👎

Sorry to scare you JWAX. It's really not that bad :meanie: . I just like to bit*h about stuff 🙂 .
It's just a lot of work for some of us (me) and I hate studying.
You will do great!

I actually really like the idea of TA'ing anatomy, so hopefully things work out so I can be cool like.... ? Who was it on here that did that? Antigunner? Yeah... I want to be cool like him.

Yeah, that was me. I don't know about it making me cool, though... I think it just outed me as "one of those smart nerds" more than anything. Unless you're one of those incredibly intelligent people that recognizes the fact that science geeks are actually the coolest people on the planet, in which case... oh yeah, I'm definitely cool 😎

I'm such a loser...

Better than being outed as a phony nerd. 🙁 New exam ID numbers are in our boxes, 2010er's!

Neat avatar, AG.

I don't think I'd want to be a TA. Have you guys seen the syllabus for IHI? :wow:

+pad+ Whoa, I'm 1K

I hope they cancel school. It's icey out...and now it's snowing again here in mcloud.

hope hope hope 😳

Yep, no such luck. The lameness of PBL is that you know the solution has to be something that we're covering right now. 🙂 The subject could have a lung problem, but we know she doesn't just because we haven't done pulmonary yet.

Yeah, 235 sucked today. I didn't get out second gear the whole way.

Again, isn't Oklahoma in the south? 🙂

Yeah the untreated strep as a kid was a dead giveaway. Gotta love the PBL's--make a differential and then we'll pretty much tell you what she's got.

This weather is aggravating, but I'm thinking that clinic will not be so hectic today.

Can anybody comment on the extent to which professional dress will be required during M2? I'm thinking of getting new clothes, but it's possible that I'll be significantly fatter than I am now, so I don't know if I should wait or not.

That's not the way to think. Of course, it's a little pathological on my end to not buy new clothes because I'm convinced that I'll get around to losing 10 lbs at some point. 😳

My sentiments exactly! I refuse to buy clothes in a bigger size, even if that is the size that I currently am. I keep telling myself that this is very temporary, I will back to my fighting weight any day now...

I actually hit a new low and wore my husbands jeans the other day. Something's got to give here.

I've gained about 20 pounds since school started...seems like half of it is in my friggin neck..wish it'd just go to my a*s like a normal person.

I'm buying a treadmill soon.

I think it all had to do with them giving us pizza 3 days a week first semester 😛

I don't like pizza anymore btw.

ive gained 10 lbs since august. i tore my acl in september and sort of pretty much discontinued physical activity (even upper body, not smart). that combined with not changing my eating habits made me balloon up really quickly. i can empathize with the whole not buying bigger clothes even though only a fraction of my wardrobe is comfortable enough to wear.

as far as PCM today, yay for patients cancelling out and not having to follow my doc around like a puppy all afternoon, boo for not telling me eveyone cancelled out until i showed up this afternoon, even after i called to check at 10:30 this morning.

Thus far, it's been fairly comparable to first year - in other words, you hardly ever have to dress up. PCM is about the only course that ever requires it, except for maybe the occasional IHI workshop that brings in actual patients. If I were you I would probably wait until you're closer to third year, although I agree that waiting to see if you get fat is not the best way to think about it 😉

I'm probably still a little over what I came in at, but I've lost 12 pounds since Nov., when I realized it was futile to focus entirely on school at the expense of my health and started working out again without the guilt of trading study time for it. But really, it was just that I was running out of clothes that fit, even though I bought them in Aug. Cut out coke and started watching the processed food/carb intake. So now, I have new choices in the closet each time I come back from a workout.

Smitty, didn't you learn something new about the vascularity of the overweight today? I didn't put 2 and 2 together until I'd left already...

That's freakin' hilarious!!!!!!!!! 😀 😀

😎

So I guess we need to form a class of 2010 quit getting fat group. 🙂 Freeze can be our mascot.

I've gained almost 5 pounds since school started. I was trying to low carb it every time I would gain one or two and that was working for a little bit but now I have no motivation to watch what I eat. Doritos and diet coke are particularly tasty when studying neruo 😀
Johnny, I already have a treadmill and I still don't work out.🙁 Makes a nice clothes rack though!

I've gained about 20 pounds since school started...seems like half of it is in my friggin neck..wish it'd just go to my a*s like a normal person.

Yeah that's what concerns me about dress shirts. When you gain weight to your face/neck, the collar gets tight while your multiple chins stick out.

BTW Dillards has Polo dress shirts on sale for half off. I got a new shirt today for $40. 👍 I had previously preferred Hilfiger for formalwear, but I have been a changed Wizard since buying my first RL. Now I just need some new ties to compliment the shirts. My current tie set is several years old.

Regarding health management, my weight is all over the place. I've been down to 148, up to 229, and everywhere in between since high school. I don't care much about being fat since I'm not breeding right now anyway, but I'm more worried about keeping my BP in check. If I can hold 130/80 at 200 lbs. drinking diet soda and spending ample time on the elliptical, I'll be more pleased than I am at my current size of 188. I just feel weak and frail right now, but it's either this or back to the meds. 👎 I'm just hoping that I can get back up soon. At my last blood donation, I think my systolic was relatively low, so maybe it's okay for me to add back some foods with flavor. 😀

Oh yeah, that was me. There are still a couple of you SDNer's whose real life identities I haven't figured out. I can now check Freeze off that list. For those of you that missed Dormer's Q&A session (which was nearly everyone except for me and Freeze, literally) every pound of fat adds 3 miles of blood vessels. Whoa, that's pretty motivating to me.

Yeah, I know you just have a hard time sleeping at night, wondering, "Just who is that Freeze guy!?!?" 😎 I was like, homeschooler, baby, and had seen y'all's (the power of the double contraction...) names on the boards, but the  didn't get through for a little bit. I was still deep in thought over pulse pressures, and why they increase distally...😕

Like I tell my wife, you need to ride that I just had a baby train as long as you can! Don't worry about those extra blood vessels! Like Wiz said, you're pulchitrudinous (sp?)!!

The way I thought about the obesity pressure change, which I've tried to relate all this crap to, was a fire pump. If you wanted to increase the flow from a nozzle, it wouldn't take much more pump pressure to do that. But if you wanted to put another 100' of hose in between the nozzle and the pump, you really have to crank up the pressure to maintain even the flow you had, much less increase it, because of all the extra friction loss you have. But I'm just a simple man, trying to make this as easy as I can on myself.

Whoa, that's pretty motivating to me.

I got to thinking about that when we had that Q during the problem-solving session--the one about why blood pressure increases for obese individuals. I got to thinking, however, if a person drops 20-30 pounds in a couple of months, blood pressure can also come down pretty significantly. So does this mean that these blood vessels grow and regress this quickly as well? I find that a little bit hard to believe which is why I was inclined to go with the peripheral stress answer (or whatever). Can't really say that I had grounds to intelligently argue since I had only heard one cardio lecture at that point, but it just seemed strange to me that blood vessels could change length so quickly.

BTW Smitty, I don't think that any of us are shy about revealing our identities. People keep confusing me with that goofball who puts poems on the discussion board and so forth, but don't believe those people. I'm really that super buff guy with the gorgeous eyes who caught your attention that one day when he opened the door for you. 😀

I don't want to go to IMPS. I'm a little bummed that I've had to go to school every day this week. The sad thing is that that actually cuts into my study time. 👎

Maybe, but you have a cool avatar and signature....if at first you don't succeed..... 😀

 I was going to say the same thing...

AG caught my attention back during the last app cylce when I was obviously not going to be succeeding at first... It seemed very relevant to my situation at the time (and thus I didn't go skydiving).

And I just happen to be one of those dorks that thinks that dorks like her are cool 😎 . That's what I keep telling myself anyways.

So first you guys try & soothe me & my worries on how hard classes are. Then you follow that with all the weight I'm going to gain? 🙄 Thanks. 🙂 I actually already worked out the whole not excerising thing.. I haven't done that since I swam in high school! So... eating right (and not so much food) is my key to staying slim. Hopefully I can keep it up.

I also really enjoyed the 900mmHg (is that right?) pick-up line... love it.

Just completed my FAFSA yesterday, and these were my SAR comments today (whatever SAR is...)

"You are not eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant because you reported
that you have a bachelor's degree (Item 28) or you are working on a degree
beyond a bachelor's degree (Item 49). Your Financial Aid Administrator will
determine what types of federal student aid you are eligible to receive.

If you have now completed your 2006 tax return, correct this SAR to reflect
the income and tax information reported on your tax return. Select the 'Make
Corrections' button at the bottom of the page to make the correction. If you
have not yet completed your tax return, you must correct this SAR to reflect
the income and tax information reported on your tax return once it is filed.

Based upon data provided by the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) and
your reported grade level, we have determined that you may have received a
total amount of student loans that is close to or equal to the loan limits
established for the federal loan programs. Therefore, your eligibility for
additional student loans may be limited."

Should I be worried???? This sounds bad...... 😱 I'm a little panicky about this... am I over-reacting? How long until I'm going to hear something form financial aid? Should I just call them and ask? Again, 😱 !

I am anxiously awaiting any word from OU Med on our future financial obligations.. I really wish they'd send out something because I have no idea what I need to be doing right now besides filing FAFSA.

I am planning on doing my taxes this weekend and then filling out the FAFSA. I had heard it is better to do it in that order. Not that I'm expecting to get any free money or anything.

Benoit, you got the financial aid packet when you interviewed right? I'm just basing my future budget on the numbers that they have there (not planning on getting any or minimal financial aid maybe @ $5k/yr max). I know I am a little different since I have a working spouse who makes pretty good bank though.

I haven't heard boo out of the med school since my acceptance letter. 👎
