Grrr...fuquin HB... no axam key anytime soon....that policy couldn't suck more or be more stupid.

So what's up with just not showing up to an exam and not contacting the course director about it? I'm guessing the person's a drop out, and the hb people are just being nicer than anyone else.

So I didn't miss any of the questions that we got points back for on physio. My grade went up all of 1% because of the one question that turned into a bonus. I guess I'm going to have to resign myself to doing entirely average in physiology.

15 pages of appeals and i only i got one back (the pbl yay holosystolic murmur) plus the bonus. boo.

From reading the appeals, I got the impression that I actually should have gone to Dormer's lectures or at least listened to the mp3s. A lot of them seemed to hinge on some random thing that he mentioned in class. I reamed him in my evaluation. I wonder what other people said about him.

Gotta love the evaluations--they carry no weight whatsoever. I like how he won't show your grade until you do the evaluation. Clever. I don't expect that Dormer was heavily praised, but it is also obvious that none of the previous classes were any more impressed than we, yet I somehow doubt change is an accepatable plan of action. Best lesson from TB 4--cooperate and graduate.

I will give this to Blair--he puts a great deal of time and effort into providing a quality product as far as his classes go. Just the little things like pulling 3 Q's per lecture for instance or the detailed appeals answers are enough to show that he actually gives a damn. This process with biochem would take weeks.

I think we'd have pretty good grounds for contesting it.

Biochem was the only class where I submitted appeals because of how bad the Q's were. I don't think that the HB folks are going to give us any sympathy with the grades already so high.

I have decided to coin a new phrase based on my experiences with Human Behavior--tornado testing. I got to thinking today how there were some concepts that were just completely skipped despite emphasis in the lectures (such as the whole illustrator/emblem/adaptor thing, transferance/counterphobic terms, dependence vs. abuse, etc.) while others were beaten to death (do we need 5-6 questions on specific neurotransmitters?). So it reminded me of a tornado which seems to leave some houses totally destroyed and skips past others entirely. Some of the questions were obviously written in the attempt to discriminate good studiers from bad, yet in the attempt it seemed to confuse everybody instead. I wish they'd just stick to the board material. I doubt that USMLE is going to expect us to treat everybody over 70 as an alcoholic.

I remember we got burned last year on where is the seat of intelligence.

Sorry guys. 🙁

Good luck with Neuro!

I guess in the unofficial guide for next year, we'll have to put the answer for that whenever we find out what it is. After reading the guide, I started looking furiously through the syllabus looking for the info but to no avail.

The one thing I wish for both neuro and phys is that we had more sample questions. I thought we'd have a lot going in, but the total number is pretty small. For example, I think we only have 3 Foreman sample questions, so I have no idea how to approach his part of the exam. I miss anatomy where we had the BRS with an essentially endless amount of sample questions that matched the type of questions we'd see on the test.

Does anyone know the questions/prof breakdown for neuro?

Does anyone know the questions/prof breakdown for neuro?

It's on the hippo curriculum discussion board. I think someone bumped it, so it's on the first page. Mainly, most of the questions are Blair, then Foreman, then O'Don.

About Dr. Blair, I don't know. He's definitely efficient and hard-working, but I do have some cynicism about the evaluation thing. Wizard's right that Dormer has probably has gotten bad evaluations forever, but he's still teaching his section in a cr@ppy way. I think Leon sort of burnt me out on evaluations with his whole only wanting positive feedback. Blair also sent me what I considered to be a fairly rude email where he made this totally unnecessary condescending comment, so that's changed my view of him. I don't think he's a horrible guy, but he's not necessarily the nicest, either.

bumped on the DB yesterday...

The distribution of questions for the written portion of the Exam 1 is as follows:

Blair 33
Foreman 15
O'Donoghue 18
Prodan 6
Total 72

This exam will start at 9:00 and end at 11:30; thus, you have 2.5 hrs to answer these questions.

For the practical exam, there will be 25 questions in the Gross Lab, and 25 questions in the lecture hall. Remember that you will have to write the structures on the answer sheet: there is no list of structures to select the answer from. For all of the practicals, be as specific as possible, and do not use abbreviations.

Yeah he sent something like that to one of my module members too. The module who has him as their phys God had him come over yesterday to go over brain structures. Big plus for them to have the course director for both phys and neuro as their designated person IMO.

Save for required assignments, I checked out of the business of emailing profs. Too political here. I guess I'll settle for rude if it includes organized and quick.

Thanks to 08 for recommending BRS Phys for boards--much more helpful as far as understanding goes even if I did blow on the exam.

that would be my mod. He's also our pbl leader. 🙂 I think the review thing is actually today at noon. It's in mod 232 -- I'm sure you can stop by. Maybe he did a lab review yesterday -- hmm, I didn't hear about it. I figure since each lab exam is only worth 5% of our grade, I'm not really gonna sweat it.

Maybe he's just not into doing the nice emails. The plus is that he answered my question in detail. He just included this comment at the end that sounded really snippy. I guess professors have a right to have a bad day. I got to say I'm not going to email him again, though.

How much do they take off for spelling?

Hopefully none, but you prolly just miss it. I'm gonna break out the doctor handwriting tomorrow just in case...

If I was a lonely mp3 looking for a free home where people could play me without having to download me, where would I go?

Is there no "sheet" like in GA?

Dude, you replied to the message from your mod neighbor that had both the breakdown and the fact there is no list, which is what Wiz posted...I think your rising intracranial pressure is tamponading the bloodflow to your cerebrum...you crack me up...

tampondating?

I think it's like carbon-dating but different. 😀

Yeah, much more disgusting.

The spelling questions a good one. Does anybody know? So what's up with o'don using "intrafusal" and "extrafusal" to describe alpha and gamma neurons. Does anybody know what that means? I actually had to google it.

Just make sure and pull the string first...

Hey Johnny check your hippo email...

Oh man...that was friggin AWESOME

10 seconds into it I had to stop and put on my headphones lol

I'm starting to feeling close to a certain dominatrix HB prof. 👍

Does intracranial pressure max out at 1200 too?

I bet by 0845 tomorrow, mine'll be pretty freakin' close...

This snow and freezing cold weather sucks! 👎 Maybe Austin wasn't so bad.

I hate school. I hate school. I hate school.

Johnny, maybe you need some valium. I think I could use some. 😀

I hate school. I hate school. I hate school.

im glad to know i am not the only one that feels this way. i HATE school. it's awful. it's demoralizing. it literally chips away at your soul.

Just become a slacker like me. It won't bother you so much then. 👍

Amen! I also like the cooperate and graduate sentiment from HB. Seriously, as long you are passing your classes you are fine. That is unless you really had your heart set on Dermatology.

O'Don said as long as they can tell what you mean you'll get credit. They don't care about spelling. A quote from O'Don on the subject: "If I'm looking for pulvinar and you put pull in the road, then we might have a problem." Also there will be no more sheets in GA starting next year.

I think the "fusal" in intrafusal and extrafusal refers to the spindle. So intrafusal means within the muscle spindle.

What if it's supposed to say "Anterior Median Fissure" and I put
"I have your wife tied up in my trunk. Give me an A! 😡 "

For some profs we might have to threaten to give her back tho :meanie:

hb answer key is up. 🙂 or 🙁

That was my lowest hb exam grade yet!🙁 I thought I only missed 2 but I missed 8! I'm asking for exam review on two. Hopefully we will get them back.

lol
Rachel and I are so different...she missed 8 and is sad...I missed 8 and I'm happy 😀

I may have missed 9 but dont know cuz I forgot to circle which one i chose on #2 form A...anyone remember what the question was?

It was something about intelligence. 🙂 I did screw up the primary emotion stuff because I forgot that subjective basically means they need to say the feeling instead of hint at it. Luckily, that's pretty much all I missed, so it worked out. Instead of focusing on that stuff because I thought it was pretty basic, I wasted time memorizing what the hell an emblem is. 👎

No wonder I missed it 😀

As I was typing that, I thought maybe it seemed a little snarky -- that really wasn't my intent, though. I promise. 🙂

I don't think my performance this time was worthy of a letter from Dr. Smith. 🙁 Stupid subjective cr@p.

I haven't studied since like 1:30 today. I guess I should start on that again. Maybe I'm adopting Wizard and Smitty's slacker style.

Demoralizing was exactly the word I used today when I was griping to my husband. 🙂 It just sucks to spend all this time memorizing things that you know you're going to forget and never use.

yea sure... just so everyone knows:
When Bagel Babe and I cross paths she always pushes me into the wall and yells "OUTTA MY WAY, BALDY!!!"
:scared:
She's given me PTSD.

btw..who is dr. smith?

Try this one...spend 20 minutes drawing the best you can all the structures and names of tracts/fibers in the cord...get it REAL nice and purdy...colors and all.

Then spill your damn coffee all over it 😡

I suck.

Does he write people letters?

Yeah, he'll actually write you a nice letter if you do well on a test. I thought it was cool. I've gotten the impression that a good number of people get them, but I don't know. I've got to admit it works because it makes psych seem even more appealing -- of course, I've pretty much always wanted to do psych, so I guess that's not a surprise.

So for the neuro blood supply lesions, it seems like the answer is always PICA, pontine, long circumferential or P1. I hope that's true for the test.

So I guess the no known location for intelligence in the brain is correct. We need to make sure that gets into the unofficial guide for next year so people don't have to rely on their psych-degree having spouse to know the answer. I told my husband it was the only time his psych degree had ever come in handy. 😀

Hey, I have to be good at something🙂 HB and PCM are my only chances for A's. This science crap is way over my head. who ever said medicine has anything to do with science?🙄

I hear you. That's why I actually like going to HB -- it doesn't make me feel like an idiot. I can actually follow what they're saying. 🙂

I was leaning that way, but I couldn't get myself to answer E because the material suggested that there was a measurable correlation for different types of intelligence right hemisphere vs. left, so somebody must have a notion that intelligence is related to the cerebral cortex someplace, eh? There was probably some semantic reason in the wording of the question to trump my thinking. 🙄

Back on the demoralizing nature of the material, I think that it's worst on exams. It does something to a person's psyche when he/she becomes confused or discouraged by strange wording. I think that I turned a few heads the other day when I whispered a string of curse words after reading one of those Dormer Q's.

If you feel like you're doing poorly, eventually you just want the exam over. I'm like, "Only X questions left..." I don't think that I have yet gone back over my exam or wanted to make sure of something--I just can't tolerate being in that room any longer. This is also the first time I've ever intentionally started in the middle of an exam to avoid a specific subset of the material. It probably has something to do with exam length too. The 50-question histo test was definitely refreshing. I miss the days when I could focus on a significant exam for a week by itself.

You think when Blair says "3 questions per lecture" he literally means that, or just that mathematically that's what it works out to?

I should have skipped Dormer's stuff and gone back, too. That exam was really the first time where I've had that feeling where I just wanted to get that exam over asap. From reading his syllabus, I guess it's not surprising that he would write ambiguous, strangely-worded questions.

So I hate how we're going to be held accountable for stuff on the practical that we haven't covered in class. It's sort of hard to remember where the central tegmental tract is when I only have a very vague idea of what it does.

I don't think I'm going to study any more tonight.

i dont know but i really think that if i studied for two more days as hard as i did today, i could do pretty well on the neuro test.

You think when Blair says "3 questions per lecture" he literally means that, or just that mathematically that's what it works out to?

I think it's literal because when a lecture is cut short or cancelled, he posts that the exam will be resultantly shortened (as well as the total points for the class if memory serves).

I'm ready for you this time, Prodan. I've got syphilis and a vitamin B12 deficiency with your name all over it... Oh wait, disregard that last sentence.

So we can disregard the spinal cord injury stuff?
