Oh hey, remember that thing I said about not putting pharm off until the night before? Yeah, same thing goes for HB. 😴

The one thing to say about this is that although the advice is good, I doubt we'll heed it. 🙂 Procrastination is just such a powerful force.

Good luck on HB! :luck: After that, you guys only have two more tests blocks for your entire life.

Uh ohs -- OUHSC's whole website appears not to be working, including both hippocrates versions. 😱 I'm hoping that didn't affect any of you 2009 people with your studies. I know we got hit with that the night before an HB exam once. Luckily I had downloaded the syllabus but no notegroups or powerpoints.

My meeting went fine too. I told them what I know which is not much since I've never seen a list (with names).
I thought they did a good job. It sounds to me like one of the deans was very upset and they were really trying not to make it any worse than they had to.
I guess time will tell.

Glad your meeting (and hopefully everyone else's) went well and that it seems no one will have any unnecessary punishment or the like. This whole situation seemed stupid from the beginning, as I have judged from everyone's posts about it. Seems like drama that could have been avoided.

Also, great talk today, Wiz! I think you said a lot of things that people wanted to hear, even though we weren't that great at asking questions. It's nice to hear from a med student that's not a student ambassador, or similar, who only has recruitment-oriented things to say.

They let Wiz talk to premeds?

We're screwed. 😉

J/K!

Whatever it is...it's probably Freeze's fault.

Yeah, I heard Freeze secretly worked for the biochem department and was responsible for the release of the alphabetical list. Then, he created the ranked list and posted it everywhere in the BSEB. 😀

Oops, maybe I should be careful about posting this because some stupid wimpy lurker might believe it. 👎

Well, now that the spirit of openness and camaraderie has been spoiled let's get back to why we're all here.

How are you pre-meds coping with the transition? The big adcom meeting is coming up soon, so those of you who had interviews earlier this month should be getting word soon on your fate. 😱

Generally, more sleeping and less studying. I've decided to not let anything really bother me this semester, particularly things like how my organic lab TA has no clue what she is doing, etc. I'm trying not to stress out about grades, since they just need to be decent.

I'm also trying to figure out where I want to live next year. I don't want to live too far from school, and I'm not sure whether I want to get a small house or an apartment. Suggestions are welcome!

Personally, if I had to do it over again, I'd live closer in like a neat historic neighborhood near school. I live near 40th & NW Portland, and while it's nice, it's pretty soulless. There are really cute, pretty cheap apartments around 23rd & Broadway. I wouldn't recommend living in Bricktown just because it's a ripoff for Oklahoma City. If you're wealthy, disregard my advice. 🙂

Where you live is such a subjective thing. Do you have any preferences? Are you more of a practical person, or a person who cares most about things like charm. I picked my first apartment in Austin based solely on the basis that it had a neat palm tree outside the window. My husband thought I should have been more concerned about whether or not it had a dishwasher (it didn't).

I consider myself more practical than looking for charm, as you put it. I'd like it to be a decent neighborhood, too. Where are the "neat historic" areas you speak of?

I'm leaning more toward an apartment than a house, mostly because I don't want to worry about any sort of upkeep associated with a house (mowing, etc.) .

Areas like Crown Heights, Mesta Park, the Paseo, etc. If safety's a big issue for you, though, I'd suggest looking a little farther away from school. About upkeep, yeah, that makes apartments better. There are lots of apartments up around Memorial, and there are also some around Penn Square. The good news about Oklahoma City is that there are tons of vacancies here, so the market is not at all competitive.

I live in a small house near NW 45th & May. It takes me less than 15 minutes to drive to school (unless it's rush hour; then it might take me 15). I pay less rent for my house than many people do for apartments ($425), but I also have to pay water/trash, which apartment-dwellers don't. I'm very happy with it.

I lived in an apartment for the first semester of 1st year (thankfully, I had the sense to sign a 6 month lease), but after floods resulting in mushrooms growing out of my carpet, drug dealers living across the hallway, and my husband's radio being stolen out of his car, I decided I wanted a little more privacy so that I could focus more on school and less on what was going on around me. So, we decided to move into a house.

As long as you have a good landlord, I think that's the way to go. You can get a puppy if you want one, you don't have to deal with the neighbors' music, etc. If you're single and don't mind roommates, I know that several of the single students have lived together in some of of the larger (5-6 bdrm) houses in the historic district, which seems like a very nice way to get some of the benefits of having a house without alot of added expense or solitude.

Anyway, I think it ultimately goes back to what Dr Bagel said-- it really depends on what you're looking for. If you give us a bit more info, we can probably be more helpful 🙂

(That particular complex I spoke so highly of was Park Place on Lincoln & NE 28th-- avoid it like the PLAGUE.)

Since I haven't heard yet, I am still pretty anxious. It is a good thing I guess, but I am ready to start the whole preparation process. I have a family with kids from kindergarten to newborn, so there will be a big adjustment.

Anyone have some advice as far as elementary schools and safe neighborhoods?

i agree that is a really a personal decision as to where to live. you arent going to be able to get everything your want (nice neighborhood, close to school, low price, decent square footage) and inevitably have just have to feel it out and find the best mix for you.

for me, i hate to commute. i didnt consider university village bc the size of the apts for the price are outrageous. also though they are close to school, school isnt exactly really close to anything else, bars, grocery stores etc. i lived in deep deuce (downtown) for a year after college, loved it, but a 1 bd was too expensive for med school budget. i ended up in a 4-plex on nw 24th and robinson. i pay $485 for about 700 sq ft. it takes me longer to walk from the student parking lot to lecture hall than it does to drive to campus. the downside is that the neighborhood is "rebuilding." i found this place just by driving around. i would definitely advise coming down here at some point and just looking around at your option. as always, roomates make everything cheaper.

that place advertises through the school, right? i think i got a flyer about them. there is a new complex around 50th & lincoln that is pretty spendy and seems to have good security. other than that, i guess there aren't good places to live on the east side around school.

I ended up moving to Mcloud to get a safer area/school for my kids.
It's a Mayberry type of town..pop ~3000.

I live a little bit west of NW 15th and Portland. This neighborhood has real charm - at Christmas, my neighbors wove garland and lights through their burglar bars, and it looked so festive!! Actually, my neighborhood is one block south of Musgrave-Pennington, which is a transitioning neighborhood of older people and preppies. The crime rate is a little on the high side and I was concerned when I moved here, but I've learned that the neighbors tend to beat up on each other when they're drunk/high. Nobody bothers me and I feel perfectly safe. This is a pleasant working-class neighborhood. I needed a yard for my large German Shepherd. It's about 15 minutes from school on the freeway or down NW 10th Street. I really like the little house - I have around 1,000 square feet - 3 bedrooms, 2 baths.

Let me give you new guys a little tip that I hadn't thought of until a "civilian" discussed it with me. Whatever modest neighborhood you choose (based on our budgets), be extremely careful about telling your neighbors that you're a medical student. You can't legally have drugs in your possession until you get your own DEA number in your second year of residency, but the mugs in the neighborhood may not realize that. It's asking for a break-in. I tell 'em I'm a respiratory therapy student... anyone wanna come over and smoke a pipe of Albuterol??

i guess there aren't good places to live on the east side around school.
Not in my opinion - not until you get to Mid-Del - there are some safe places in Midwest City and Del City - and some not-nice areas. I wanted to be relatively close to school but safe. In my own opinion, in the area between where I live and school (the strip from NW 23rd down to Reno), it gets worse the closer you get to school as you travel east. Personally, I wouldn't want to live on the east side of Portland in my neighborhood. The "Ten-Penn" area (NW 10th to NW 23rd, Pennsylvania west to May) is just plain dangerous in my book, although the northwest side of town is supposed to be "good." GLP's neighborhood is just colorful.

NW 10th has a well-deserved bad reputation for cheap, scary bars. When I walk my dog, I walk north. Even in my "OK" neighborhood, I wouldn't go south of 13th Street.

Other areas I learned to avoid: Britton Road anywhere near the Broadway Extension. Housing is cheap - for a reason. I also have friends who live around Hefner Road and Western Avenue, and they've seen a lot more excitement than I have at my place.

I'm gonna give a plug for the practice physical exam. I did it on Thursday, and it made me feel somewhat less confused about how to do an exam. Also, it's taught by a 4th year, so you get some insider information into how we're evaluated and how we're realistically supposed to do it. All I can say is that there's a large element of play acting involved. Sure, I felt that popliteal artery. 🙂

This is some WINDY **** over here in Mcloud.

It looks as if one of the main posters in this thread has gone underground. I hate stupid, petty stuff that causes things like this. 👎

This is why the guys at OSUCOM have their own private, password secured forums, etc., free from lurkers. A friend from high school is MS2 there and set up the site. Perhaps I should get him to help me set one up as well.

Yeah, it's sad. 🙁 Our class web guy mentioned something about creating a password protected forum for our class, but I guess there wasn't enough interest expressed in one. That would protect us from admin lurking, but I guess our problem now is that the lurkers who are spreading potentially false and harmful gossip are our classmates. Even though if you have to sign up and be logged in to read things, I guess we would at least know who's reading our conversations.

Now it's raining...

wait....now it stopped ...what the heck. lol

We actually had a tornado watch last night. 😱 At least tornadoes are better than fires for cats because my cats just hide under things when anything scary happens. That's a good instinct for tornadoes but not so good if I'm trying to get them out of a burning building.

I don't think it rained here.

The OSU students own/run that particular site so it isn't associated with the medical school and I'm guessing that they can ban whomever they wish with no reprocussions. I really may ask my bud about it if you guys are interested.

Even if we made a pw protected site, someone would end up giving the pw to those who aren't supposed to be there.

As far as I know, the whole "Names List Conspiracy of 2007" is history. I went in and talked with three of those ppl and they admitted that no such list has ever even been seen to their knowledge. It sounds like a stupid rumor-mill creation.

This is good because I was about to turn state's evidence, cut a deal, and point the finger at Bagel Babe! 😀

Jerk! 😡 😀 So med school is like high school, I guess.

I still think the admin needs to fess up to having an information leak and make some assurances to us that it will never happen again. My dad told me it takes all of 10 minutes to learn how to load grades on blackboard and about 2 minutes to actually do it. Why not just switch to that?

So about hard classes, for me the current hardest class is physiology, but I think that's partially because of the Dormer effect (horrible, horrible professor) on the last test. Also, I've never taken physiology before. I think neuro could be super hard, but it's not that hard so far for me. I also think lesion questions are sorta fun. 🙂

From looking at the grade distribution for our last test and for last year, it seems like people overall do better in neuro than phys. For example, on the last test, there were 38 A's in physiology and more than 50 A's in neuro. However, neuro appears to be the real bane of some people's existence.

So far, histology is pretty easy.

So neat mac update. My husband put parallels on my computer and uploaded the histotime cd. It seems to work perfectly. You can try the parallel thing for free, and if you like it, it's a one time $70 fee. Bootcamp's free, I think, but the parallel thing seems a little cooler, imo, because you don't have to reboot to switch between windows and the mac os.

i spent a couple of hours one day instaling parellels and windows and trying to get my histo times .dmg image to a format that windows liked. havent used histo times yet.

as far as class difficulty. of the big 4 (biochem, anatomy, phys, neuro) the class statistics point to phys as being the hardest. fewer people get an A in that class than any other. but your mileage will vary. i like phys the most out of those 4. it seems more cohesive and intuitive than the rote memorization of biochem or anatomy. the first semester is probably easier than the second but for me it took me a long time to adjust to studying and i feel like i am more on top of things this semester. depending on you natural strengths and interests it will vary.

I've decided on a mac laptop now. I'll just boot windows if I need anything special or use my desktop. Thanks for all the info you guys provided.👍

What's the deal with this meeting? 😕 I didn't check the forums for a day or two and briefly skimmed what I missed. Perhaps it is best if it's in a private message.. or maybe I need better reading comprension (and time).

I was wondering if you all think it's feasible to ride my bike to OUHSC campus. I ride everywhere here in norman and I'll be living about 3 miles away around the Paseo. I just don't know what the traffic is like on the way to the med center.

if you dont mind the distance, then you can probably do it. you'll want to stay off 23rd and also lincoln but if you take less traveled roads through heritage hills you can cross over I-235 either at 13th or 10th and get to class without too much trouble. there is still traffic on 13th and 10th, i wouldnt ride my bike, but that is mainly bc im lazy.

The 50 some odd year old guy in our class rides his bike every day. I don't know where he lives, though. Anyway, I think it's very cool.

I thought biking in OK would be super easy because it's flat, but I forgot about the wind. 😱

I've been wanting to start riding to school, but it's hard since I don't ever go. It's prolly about 20-25 mins if I get on it. I could prolly get there faster, but I would have to ride Reno or Tenf, neither of which are bike-friendly in the morning. Not that anywhere here really is.

If I was going to OUHSC from Paseo, I'd ride down Walker or Robinson to 13th (or somewhere in there where you can get across/under 235) and cross Lincoln rather than ride it. The only good thing about riding down Lincoln, even from 23rd, is that you'll be right next to the trauma center when you get run over. Lincoln is a combat speedway in the mornings, which I fully believe reflects the personalities of people going to the general area. A lot of the neighborhoods south of Paseo, Mesta Park-Heritage Hills area, have lanes and are inhabited generally by a more receptive crowd.

And the wind is ALWAYS a bitch...I went riding Friday down the trail that goes from Reno & Grand Blvd. and I was pedaling my ASS off and going like 8 mph. 👎 Turning with it later was fun though, 34 mph...👍

Wow, first time I have seen this thread fall off the first page.

I was trying to remember who all has been accepted for Co2011.

Those that I remember are Benoit, Jwax, myself, soonergeek.... I'm too lazy to go back and find the other thread to see if there were others.

I was just wondering if that is all who are SDNers for next years entering class.

There are a few people waiting, too. Does anybody know when the big final meeting is? Just an fyi for anyone who is waiting on that meeting. Supposedly it's open to the public, but apparently you don't get anything out of going because they don't really discuss applicants publicly or give any information that will help you figure out your standing.

Ahhhh another test block with an IHI syllabus that should be double ply and come on a roll.....gotta love it 👎

at least they only test us on the high points 🙄

Bagel Babe is right...the don't use names, but they refer to applicants as:
that chick with big hooters,
that bald guy,
that illegal alien,
that dude with the food in his teeth,
that chick with bigger hooters,
that as*hole,
that b*tch,
that future D.O.,
that future dentist,
my little Bobby-poo,
that dork,
that guy who want's to "help people" lol,
that chick with the hot a*s,
that chick with the obnoxious laugh,
etc...

Thanks for remembering me! I think I have gone since my acceptance without checking SDN, for the most part. Something about getting in and having the whole "trying to get in to med school process" being over that makes me want to avoid the whole anxiety attack that goes with being a med student. What happens when I come back on? You guys are all freaking out about histo & neuro & pharm & etc... It really just makes me want to panic. Then I got to read about ya'lls Soap Opera and that made me laugh. So thanks for that 😀 .

In my time off from SDN, I have realized that there is a world outside of trying to get into med school. It's Very, VERY nice. I had a microbiology lab exam last week, and hadn't studied for it at ALL and decided to spend the night before the test drinking sake & hanging out with an old friend from back in the day. Then studied for about 1.5 hours before the exam and pulled off a 92%!!! 😎 To follow, we had our limb unit practical for anatomy monday night, which I spent time studying for while watching the oscars sunday & in-between classes mon. Not sure how I did on it yet, but I doubt it was all that bad (probably a B). Haven't attended micro lecture more than maybe 1/3 of the time & only really studied the day before the exam & pulled of an 86%. Oh yeah. Being an undergrad with a lovely acceptance letter hanging on their fridge is a nice place to be. I've been choosing to spend more time with friends, family, and myself over studying because I know I will not have a life for the next 7+ years to come. I 😍 this time of my life!

Oh & I got to build a house w/Habbitat for Humanity w/my church this weekend. Awesome. Truly a great experience.

That being said, I'm still thrilled about starting med school in the fall. Working + going to school = suck. It's okay for giving me variation, but sucks b/c lack of focus and I can't just study on days off of school, I have to work from 8:30 - 5:30.

Anyways, as my fiance said... I'm writing a book. So I will stop.

Just wanted to say "hi" to all my drama queen med students 😉 . You know, I recall reading all the posts from the 2009 class & they didn't have nearly as many drama issues as you guys do.... I hope our kick butt 2011 class mimicks (sp?) the 09 in this regard.

Word on the pre-med circuit was that the meeting was on the 25th, but that was a Sunday (so, maybe yesterday instead?).
