About notes, we have a student run notegroups so theoretically we should get good notes for every class. That obviates the need for you to take copious notes in lecture. Also, most everything you need to know if on the powerpoint or in the syllabus. It's not like lots of classes in ugrad where taking good notes is the key to doing well.

I know it's sacrilege to say this on sdn where we're supposed to talk about how horrible it is to be a medical students, but I think your schedule would definitely work. Unfortunately, I'm not organized enough to do the 9-5 hard core studying thing, but if I were, I'd probably be making A's in all my classes without great difficulty and without killing myself during test block week.

If I studied 9-5 during the day, I would have superstar grades. Especially if that 9-5 were spent homeschooling when you can do a lot more with that amount of time. I think very few people spend this amount of time, although we probably all should.

Also, since they're reducing the questions on the written, I wonder if the practical will become the dominant part of your grade. For us, the written was always worth slightly more than the practical, which was great for me because I sucked at the practicals.

I would like that to be the case. At this point in undergrad anatomy lab, I'm rocking the practicals. 100% on the first, 93% on the second (and I missed two dissection days & didn't study nearly as much as I meant to). Our 3rd is next wed. (thoracic region). I think my key to success has been the Netter's Flashcards RachelD let me borrow!!! 😉 They are wonderful.

Am I the only person who 😍 anatomy? It's so much cooler than any other class I've taken. Ever. I really like the idea of being an undergrad TA for anatomy down at OU while I'm a first year, but my fiance does not support the idea due to the time investment required. 🙁 I really am hoping that I can TA the 1st years as a 2nd year. I imagine that looks good on your residency apps, yes? Anyways, I'm sure none of you really care about my excessive excitement about anatomy.

I think it will be biochem & embryo that rapes me in the fall. Sounds like neuro & histo will rape me next spring. One of my classmates always talked about bringing anal lubricant to our tests for animal development.

Anyone know much about Rosalind Franklin in Chicago? I have an interview there in a couple of weeks, but I am sort of on the fence about going. I have never been to Chicago, so that would be a plus. At the same time, I don't honestly know that I would be willing to attend. I sort of applied as a safety school since my numbers are a little bit better, but at the same time, I feel compelled to attend the interview since I have only had three interview offers. With a tuition double OU's, I think it will be difficult to justify my attendance unless they have some specialty program that I am unaware of.

I guess I am trying to talk myself out of buying a plane ticket, but I would appreciate input.

There've been a couple of recent discussion both in allo and pre-allo here about Rosalind Franklin. You might want to do a search on both forums for some answers. My thought is that Rosalind Franklin is not going to offer you anything you can't get at OU aside from location.

O'Don is really, really useful in lab, but he's one guy and there's 21 tanks -- that math doesn't work out in the students' favor. I strongly, strongly suggested on my course evaluation that they have more actual teachers in lab -- I hope they're dropping the TAs in favor of that.

cool. i'm not a gunner by any means, i just probably need to do this to keep my head afloat and to stay on track. plus, i just like having a daily routine and nights off. glad that much studying could be enough.

Ended up it was the kidney and was way too big to BE a kidney cuz it had an inch of fat on it. Put an inch of fat on a golfball and it looks like a softball.

I wouldn't know if most people go to class because I am never there. I only go when it is absolutely required.

As for taking notes I just jot down a few notes on my syllabus as I'm listening to the lecture. I couldn't imagine trying to take detailed notes on every single lecture. The syllabi are usually very good and complete, eliminating the need to write down everything from class.

This was how I did the first two years as well. Works great.
And as far as 9-5p studying if you homeschool? Methinks that's prob. a little excessive. Most days you'll actually have class an average of prob. 4-5hrs per day, so since you can usually read the stuff faster than professors yap (not to mention the fact that they have to fill up the hour, be it student questions or whatever), I'd say I spent an avg of 30-45 min. home studying for every class hour.

That's an avg of about 3-4 hrs a day. When you think about it, that means you get up at your leisure, lounge around the house, and sometime during the day, knock out 3-4 hrs of studying.

For me that was money enough to get an A in every class (except for physiology (89.4% = B, boy that'll piss ya off) and HB (the easiest class, go figure)


No wonder MS1/MS2 felt like such a vacation.

I had asked about the intramurals, and my tour guide said there was volleyball, basketball, and flag-football. Hopefully, we can get a friendly tournament of golf together with the Pharm and Dent schools. We could do it at the end of the year at Lincoln Park or maybe even Jimmie Austin in Norman. Any takers? 😎

I'll leave it to AG to discuss golfing since he spends a good portion of his free time golfing or thinking about golfing. 😉

I have been to the workshop. I would say you don't need to do anything to prepare, just bring something to take notes. When I went, Dr. Hall did a presentation talking about how they decide which applicants to take and then we broke up into small groups. A member of the admissions committee was with each group and then went over each persons file and talked about why they were declined and what you could do to improve. It was very very helpful.

if i remember correctly most of the waitlist action happens after may 15 which is the day people holding multiple acceptances have to choose one. not sure on the range of accpetances, i know at least one person got in like the week or two before school started but not sure when the earliest is. most smart people with multiple offers wait to see financial packages from each school before withdrawing anywhere, so really, not hearing anything before may 15 is standard.

That really, really blows. I just decided to give up the notion of getting to TA the undergrad's my 1st year b/c I could try and TA the 1st years as a second. 😡 👎 I'm highly disappointed. Thus far, it sounded like one of the only things that I could & would want to do to make my residency app have a "stand-out" characteristic.

Maybe my bar tour attendence will impress them?

I was also annoyed about the 2006-2007 academic calander under the 2011 link. I was so excited to see our upcoming schedule!!! Disappointed again.

Oh and we have to have chicken pox vaccines? Boo to that as well.

Oh well. I don't ever have to take the MCAT again 😀 . Gotta look on the bright side!

About the vaccinations, don't worry about it now, but don't put off thinking about it until a week before school starts. Also, take advantage of the family medicine center at OU because they can do pretty much everything for you at about the cheapest rate in town.

Yep, you're not going to see anything for a while. You might get a grant award in April or May, but you won't get your official financial aid award until June maybe? I know it was after May 15.

Have you gotten notified about the scholarship/grant application? I know that was around this time last year. I think that's the only thing to be on the look out for now.

I don't remember having done the transcript thing. But I also didn't have any prereqs left to take when I applied, so that may be why.

Yeah, I sent in all my transcripts last year like an idiot because I thought they'd want them -- some schools do. Apparently they only want them if you've completed a prereq since your AMCAS was verified, so most students probably don't need to send one.
