University of Southern Nevada Application Thread

Does anybody know when the interview process started last year?

If I remember right the started contacting people as early as the end of october/beginning of november and started the actual interviews in January.

I read somewhere that they won't evaluate your file until they get the grades for your 5 pre-requisites and also your PCAT score. Once they get that they calculate your points with their formula and then they start calling people for the interview.

I just noticed that USN posted the admissions application on their website but it's the last years.

It's actually been up there the whole time. They just re-did their website so the link is just in a more obvious place now. I'm wondering if it will be the same for this year though? I went ahead and did all the GPA calculations just so I could get that out of the way!

Hey. Just wondering....What are people's GPAs looking like??? I guess my GPA lowered from last year....I went from a oGPA 3.5 to a 3.4 and sGPA from a 3.44 to a 3.36....🙁. I'm sending my application on tuesday, I was wondering what are the chances of me getting an interview at this piont?? Maybe one of the earlier interviews?? USN is the only school I'm applying to this year.

I think your chances are still pretty good to get another interview, at least I would think. As long as your reapp statement is solid, and you improve your interview skills/score you should be fine. Good luck!

Hm... I wouldn't mind going to a hot place like Henderson, Nevada. I passed up this school for financial reasons. Good luck everyone.

3 x ($39k(+?) tuition + car + rent + food + entertainment :S)

Did you ask USN where your application was lacking last cycle? As long as you improved on those areas, I don't think your small decrease in GPA is significant.
Did you finish a degree?

Thanx...I didn't do much other than work at a pharmacy. I had a fever the week of the PCAT so I couldn't take it in August (I'm sending my old scores even though their low). I'm a vice president of a pre-pharmacy and pre-dental club (I don't know if I should put pre-dental club on my app) that are starting next semester...I am heavy involved in both. I'm a big supporter of public health that's why I'm involved. What I had last year was just working at a pharmacy and some community service....Since I worked 30+ hours, I am limited in time. Also, I was able to complete all my pre-reqs. Last year I could only get 5 before applying and 2 at the end of the spring semester; I'm finished with everything now...But it was A&P II during the summer that brought my GPA down significantly...I had a 89.7 and she didn't bump me up to an A...And since I'm in community college the 89.7 automatically turns into a 3.0 for the summer semester.

I did extremely well on the interview...The two P1s talked to me after interview and they said I had an amazing interview...Too bad I didn't get in 🙁. Now I got to worry about this year. What do you think my chances of getting a November interview are? That's what I'm hoping for but I'm sure they're all going to go to all the 4.0s.

I didn't speak to them because I have a lot of things going on at the time. As I mentioned above the things I were lacking were not getting the pre-reqs done.

I don't have a degree and that's what I'm worried about...My GPA is low right now and I'm in my 3rd year at community college and I should have a BS in Biology next year.

What do you think my chances of getting a November interview are? That's what I'm hoping for but I'm sure they're all going to go to all the 4.0s.

FYI - The application for the 2010-2011 admission cycle (the class that begins in the fall 2011) is now available for download from the USN website.

The application deadline is December 6, 2010.

Please note that to be considered for admission for the 2010-2011 admission cycle, you must take the PCAT on or before October 16, 2010.

Really? I can only find the 2009-2010 application.
Anyone else been able to find the new one?

Oh boy! Time to start working on those questions. I understand why they ask them, but I dislike the whole "tell me why you like Pharmacy", etc questions. I enjoyed the PCAT essay questions. I am dreading these!

Science/Math: 3.80

Cumulative: 3.89

I took the Pcat on Aug. 21, if I get scores by October 1 and they are low, I will retake it on Oct 16.

How much do they look at the Pcat?

Dagnabit, I just plugged my science prereqs in to the table and now I wonder if I will get an interview at all. My overall GPA is a 3.74 or so, but I have taken 7 of the 8 science/math pre-reqs and I am looking at a craptastic 3.29 avg for those. Gen Chems were both Bs, A&Ps were both As, OChem 1 was an A, taking OChem 2 in the spring, and Calc and Microbio were Bs. I think I had a higher number in the back of my head because I was thinking about my As in Gen Bio.

Hoping my 91 PCAT helps, even though my Chem score was a 73.

Ohhh you people with PCAT scores in the 90's and decent GPAs worried about getting an interview kill me.

I thought the avg GPA of an accepted student was a 3.7. A 3.29 is a lot lower than that. Grades and scores are all I have - I am going to get a little bit of pharmacy volunteer experience this fall if my paperwork ever completes. I don't belong to any clubs because that part of my life (undergrad) was a very long time ago. My leadership experience is as a Cub Scout Den Leader and Cookie Manager for a Brownie troop. I feel at a real disadvantage against people who have been working as techs for a while.

High grades will certainly help you. I believe they will still give you an interview despite a relatively low GPA if you are able to express yourself coherently and wholeheartedly in the essays. Also, if you can work, shadow, or volunteer at a retail pharmacy that will help you oodles.

The average GPA used to be 3.7. Since they added the PCAT last year, the number of applicants and the stats have dropped. I was surprised the PCAT was so low. I heard that they are reworking the formula so that may change. But it looks like anyone who applies has a pretty good shot at getting an interview. After that, it is up to you.

Here they are:

Fall 2010
Applications received: 730
Interviews conducted: 615
Students enrolled: 249
Average overall GPA: 3.5
Average PCAT Composite Score: 53rd Percentile
Percent with Bachelor's degrees or higher: 45

Thanks for the stats Diastole. Wow, they interview A LOT of applicants! Another thing I'm surprised about is the percent of people admitted with out a degree...that gives me hope!!!

Like was mentioned before, I think USN goes off the interview ALOT. I know someone that had better stats and PCAT than I did, interviewed earlier, and didnt get in.

Thanks for the stats Diastole. Wow they do interview a lot of people. I did not realize they had only 730 applicants last year. Hadn't it been around 1000 in years past?

I think when they started requiring the PCAT, their applicant pool dropped.

The info Diastole pulled is from this link: http://www.usn.edu/pages/157/Frequently Asked Questions

If you look at this link: http://www.usn.edu/pages/416/Admissions
you'll see that they still have last year's info up as follows:
•2009 Application Statistics - 1877 applications received; 238 students admitted (146 Nevada campus and 92 Utah campus); Overall GPA of admitted students was 3.7.

I think that requiring the PCAT is a big factor but only one of the factors in the decrease in applicants.

Hey all. Im planning on applying this year; hopefully ill get my application mailed by the end of this month. I've eyed USN for several years. Looking at last years statistics hopefully I'll be able to get an interview.

I calculated my GPAs last night and my overall is 3.11 and science is 2.85 with with 2 Fs, but im retaking one of those classes this semester. I havent taken any classes for a while. A few years ago I took the PCAT and scored 90th percentile composite, and Im planning to take the Oct one this year because USN needs a more current effort, I believe.

My pharmacy experience and knowledge of the business is outstanding with about 8 years teching in retail community pharmacy, an AIDS and cancer specialty pharmacy, and more recently a mail order/PBM company. I have some volunteering experience, and interview well. (I hope I get an invitation!)

I think my GPA will increase as my 2 F's are replaced by the grades I get when I retake the classes so that will help. And if I can blast away the PCAT again, couldnt hurt...

LOL. Do you really think that his posts on SDN had an effect on their applicant pool? I mean, the same thing crossed my mind, but then I really start to think, how many people from their applicant pool are really on SDN? Maybe there's a lot more people on here than I think...and that many people just read instead of post.
If such is the case, he definitely succeeded in his mission.
I'm still applying here, and I will form my opinions of the school on my own if given the opportunity.

P1s just had their 1st top 200 drug assessment. Scores ranged 100-60%, average 90%. 🙂

Some people did claim to cancel interviews or not consider the school because of his posts. And there are typically a lot more lurkers than posters so I expect the number to be even higher still. The school must think this is a good place to get information out because they do post announcements here from time to time so perhaps more people are reading than you would think. But even with all of that, I don't think the number could be that large. Who knows? He might come back this year to try it again. I guess we will find out.

The following came out yesterday from USN:

The University of Southern Nevada has established a Name Change Task Force to begin the process of indentifying a new name for the institution, to be subsequently submitted for approval by Administration and the Board of Trustees. The attached document provides rationale for the name change.

As part of the process, the Name Change Task Force is soliciting name ideas for the University. All stakeholders (students, alumni, faculty and staff) have the opportunity to submit their new name ideas to [email protected] by October 1, 2010. Please include a brief statement of why your name idea is being suggested (150 words or less).

All names submitted will be evaluated and considered by the Task Force in development of a short list of potential names for further research and analysis. The person(s) who suggest the name idea that is ultimately chosen and approved as the new name will receive $400 and two runner up names will receive $50 gift cards*.

All suggestions are welcome. However, when formulating a name idea, please consider the following criteria:

The name should reflect the University's Mission, Vision and Core Values (see below). Further, it should reflect who we are, but also not limit the scope of the University’s future growth.
The name should embody emotions and images that form the students', faculty, staff and alum's feelings toward the University.
The name should be clear, unique, and brief. It should be distinctive: sounds like a university, but not every other university.
The name should not be overused or confused with other institutions or products.
The name should be marketable: Won't be confused with other Universities or commercial entities in Nevada or Utah.
A name that doesn't connote negative images in prospective students’ or faculty’s minds. Does not create an acronym that may be confused with another institution (ex. USN is also U.S. Navy). Think about what the acronym will spell, such as ones that are strange, silly or offensive (IOU, PU, etc.).
A name that is appealing and intriguing on first exposure: Pleasant-sounding, easy to say and read. Little difficulties in spelling, pronunciation, and usage.
A name that has the best possibility of being a strong trademark with longevity.

We encourage everyone to contribute to the name change process. One of the greatest strengths of the University is the creativity of our students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners. If you have questions, please email them to the submission address stated above and we’ll do our best provide a prompt answer.

*USN administration and members of the USN Name Change Task Force are ineligible. There is no limit on the number of unique Names an individual may suggest. To be eligible, name idea suggestion(s) must be received by the due date stated above. If more than one individual suggests the winning Name, the prizes will be split between all eligible individuals who submitted the Name.

By suggesting a name idea, you agree that you irrevocably assign and transfer to USN all right, title and interest in the Name, including, without limitation, all trademark rights, and you agree to execute any additional documents USN may deem necessary to evidence or effectuate such assignment. USN’s rights with respect to the Name include, but are not limited to: (a) the exclusive right to use, publish, display or reproduce the Name on products, packaging, advertising for purposes of trade and any other lawful purpose; (b) the exclusive right to alter, revise or change the Name in any way and (c) the exclusive right to secure trademark and copyright registrations and other rights to the Name anywhere throughout the world.

Hmm. That's interesting. What's wrong with their current name? Maybe they don't like having a University of SOUTHERN NEVADA in Utah, so they want to come up with something less specific to the one state?

I think that is the main reason. Utah will actually be the bigger of the two campuses once the dental school opens next year. It can be pretty confusing to people when USN Utah students tell them, "I go to the University of Southern Nevada Utah campus". On a related note I can't imagine how the LECOM Florida students feel and the PCOM Georgia students. I think USN is smart to follow the likes of Touro, NOVA and Midwestern. Private schools that have campuses in multiple states but don't confuse people quite as much with their names.
or maybe you believe a quote from Shakespeare by Juliet:
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."
Personally I feel that the name change decision is welcome and overdue. I believe a name is important and perceptions often, whether we like it or not, are often given importance similar to realities.

👍

On another note, do you (or anyone else) know if Admissions will begin to review applications without PCAT scores, or do they wait until those are on file to start the review process?

Also, GSINCCOM: What type of environment are you doing your residency, if you don't mind me asking? And was it where you originally wanted?

I wanted an Am Care focused PGY-1 and I matched at an excellent one. PM me if you want more details.

I can't help with your PCAT question. The PCAT is a new requirement for admissions, in the past year, and wasn't required when I started.

Best wishes to you and all the current applicant pool🙂

I heard somewhere that if you have a Bachelor's degree that you don't have to take the PCAT? Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks

You must be thinking of the UofU. They changed their admission requirements and procedures this year. USN's Utah campus really cut into their applicant pool in recent years (2010 and 2011 classes especially) but they seem to have recovered well over the past year or so.

Just sent out app...Should be there on Tuesday. Now hoping for an early interview :xf::xf: Who else applied so far???

I just completed my application today, can u pls share your stats?

3.8 GPA
Re-took PCAT in August...waiting on the scores....not-so-patiently
